Fostering Active Learning And Metacognitive Skills In A Cognitive-Science Based Math Course, Sheila Tabanli
Fostering Active Learning And Metacognitive Skills In A Cognitive-Science Based Math Course, Sheila Tabanli
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
There is a large body of research on how to improve student learning through active learning and metacognition. However, without well-structured guidelines, students do not tend to actively engage with the taught material, peers, and the instructor at a desirable metacognitive level (Deslauriers et al., 2019). To address this problem, a research-driven assessment structure is integrated into a nontraditional course called “Methods for Mathematical Problem Solving” (M2PS). Methods for Mathematical Problem Solving was designed by the author to teach students effective study principles stemming from cognitive science. The assessments include synchronous check for understanding (CFU) assignments to further investigate the …

Given the demands of modern working life, university studies should support students’ life-long learning and agency. This article explores the types of agency learners from an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course described in interviews. The interviews were conducted in two groups in 2 consecutive years, in two stages: at the end of the EAP course as well as 6 to 7 months later. Through thematic content analysis, three types of agency were identified: instrumental agency, operational agency, and reflective agency. These types usually differed in terms of the contexts in which the learners placed the agency, the positions the …
Efficacy Of Online Laboratory Exercises In Achieving Undergraduate Learning Outcomes In Introductory Astronomy Classes, Kristen Miller, Shelli Carter
Efficacy Of Online Laboratory Exercises In Achieving Undergraduate Learning Outcomes In Introductory Astronomy Classes, Kristen Miller, Shelli Carter
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Fully online courses and degree programs are popular with students today. It is important that these courses provide the same rigor and value of a traditional learning experience in a face-to-face classroom in order to ensure mastery of concepts and learning objectives. Online classes typically have suffered due to a lack of hands-on experiences for the students. One remedy to this is to include simulated hands-on work in the course through online laboratory exercises. The belief is that these simulated labs allow students to actively engage in the learning process, thus providing a traditional learning component in the online classroom. …

An Unintentional Realist: Rural Poverty In Harold Bell Wright’S Ozarks Novels, John J. Han
KAUPA Letters
This paper explores the theme of rural poverty in Harold Bell Wright’s Ozarks novels, a topic often overlooked due to the romantic, Arcadian lens through which Wright portrays the region. Despite his idealized depictions of simple, spiritually fulfilling rural life, Wright’s personal experiences with poverty and his observations of Ozarks life offer valuable insights into the economic deprivation and isolation of the area. The analysis focuses on The Shepherd of the Hills, The Re-Creation of Brian Kent, and Ma Cinderella, examining how Wright portrays rural poverty, the self-sufficiency of Ozark natives, and the effects of poverty on their lives. While …

The Recreational Value Of Birding And Crane Abundance, Richard T. Melstrom, Alex Nielsen, Carson Reeling
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
We estimate the economic value of birding, which is an important ecosystem service produced by bird populations in recreation areas. Our research identifies the link between values and species richness as well as the abundance of the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis), which migrates each year through our study area. Sandhill crane stopovers at state and federal wildlife areas can attract many birders. We estimate this nonmarket value using the zonal travel cost method and data from the eBird project on wildlife areas in Indiana. We compare crane counts based on eBird with those from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources …

I-GUIDE Forum
Our increasingly connected world is faced with complex socio-environmental problems (e.g., biodiversity loss, climate change, and food insecurity). Tackling these problems requires cross- disciplinary approaches that examine the problems based on synergistic spatial and system thinking. Spatial Agent-Based Models (SABMs) represent a powerful approach to understanding complex socio-environmental systems. However, research on SABMs and associated complex problem solving face grand challenges that must be overcome to effectively unleash the power of SABMs enabled by cyber-based geographic information science and systems (cyberGIS). This paper describes four such grand challenges —reproducibility, scalability, communication, and accessibility. Resolving these challenges will enable new spatial …

Lifetimes Of Stable Solutions To The Planar Three-Body Problem, Revealed In Patterns Of Fractal Art, Charles F. Babbs
Lifetimes Of Stable Solutions To The Planar Three-Body Problem, Revealed In Patterns Of Fractal Art, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This preliminary study explores statistical prediction of the lifetimes of apparently stable orbits of three particle masses, mutually attracted by gravity in the planar three body problem. Most orbits eventually break up, commonly in an end state with two of the bodies orbiting each other and moving together in one direction, with the third body moving in the opposite direction. Studies of such escape events led to a novel hypothesis, emerging from the intersection of probability, statistics, chaos, and fractal art. Statistical estimates of a constant probability of breakup per unit time allow prediction of the times of breakup of …

Fatigue-Resistant Mechanoresponsive Color-Changing Hydrogels For Vision-Based Tactile Robots, Jiabin Liu, Wei Li, Yu She, Sean Blanchard, Shaoting Lin
School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
Mechanoresponsive color-changing materials that can reversibly and resiliently change color in response to mechanical deformation are highly desirable for diverse modern technologies in optics, sensors, and robots; however, such materials are rarely achieved. Here, a fatigue-resistant mechanoresponsive color-changing hydrogel (FMCH) is reported that exhibits reversible, resilient, and predictable color changes under mechanical stress. At its undeformed state, the FMCH remains dark under a circular polariscope; upon uniaxial stretching of up to six times its initial length, it gradually shifts its color from black, to gray, yellow, and purple. Unlike traditional mechanoresponsive color-changing materials, FMCH maintains its performance across various strain …
