Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1984

Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

Louis XIV during the fifty-five years of his personal reign (1661-1715) created the institutional foundations for the science and technology of France. These institutions were outwardly an attempt both to meet the needs of the French state for technical advice and to provide professional scientists with the necessary support for pure scientific research. In a less obvious sense, the origin and evolution of these institutions represented an attempt on the part of the monarchy to disentangle the pursuit of knowledge from the prevailing system of political patronage and from the political and religious speculation that fed the social conflicts of …

Variation In Spectral Response Of Soybeans With Respect To Illumination, View And Canopy Geometry, K. J. Ranson, L. L. Biehl, M. E. Bauer Jan 1984

Variation In Spectral Response Of Soybeans With Respect To Illumination, View And Canopy Geometry, K. J. Ranson, L. L. Biehl, M. E. Bauer

LARS Technical Reports

Comparisons of the spectral response for incomplete (well-defined row structure) and complete (overlapping row structure) canopies indicated a greater dependence on sun and view geometry for the incomplete canopies. This effect was more pronounced for the highly absorptive red (0.6--0.7µm) wavelength band than for the near-IR (0.8--1.1µm) based on relative reflectance factor changes.

Red and near-IR reflectance for the incomplete canopy decreased as solar zenith angle increased for a nadir view angle until the soil between the plant rows was completely shaded. Thereafter for increasing solar zenith angle, the red reflectance leveled off and the near-IR reflectance increased. A "hot …

Costs Of Measuring Leaf Area Index Of Corn, C. S. T. Daughtry, S. E. Hollinger Jan 1984

Costs Of Measuring Leaf Area Index Of Corn, C. S. T. Daughtry, S. E. Hollinger

LARS Technical Reports

Leaf area index (LAI) is an important biophysical descriptor of crop canopies. Accurate measurements of LAI are laborious and time-consuming. Many methods of measuring LAI of corn (Zea mays L.) have been reported and vary greatly in their accuracy, precision, bias, and ease of measurement. We examined the magnitude of plant-to-plant variability of leaf area of corn plants selected from uniform plots and evaluated four representative methods for measuring LAI. The number of plants required and the relative costs for each sampling method were calculated to detect 10, 20, and 50% differences in LAI using 0.05 and 0.01 tests of …

Changes In Spectral Properties Of Detached Leaves, C. S. T. Daughtry, L. L. Biehl Jan 1984

Changes In Spectral Properties Of Detached Leaves, C. S. T. Daughtry, L. L. Biehl

LARS Technical Reports

A leaf begins to senesce as soon as it is removed from the plant and changes in metabolic processes and spectral properties are inevitable. If senescence can be delayed for several days without significant changes in spectral properties, then samples of leaves at remote test sites could be prepared and shipped to laboratories which have the equipment to measure spectral properties. The objective of this study was to determine the changes in spectral properties of detached leaves. Leaves from red birch (Betula nigra L.) and red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) were immersed for 5 minutes in water or 0.001 M …

Comparison Of Classification Schemes For Mss And Tm Data, P. E. Anuta, L. A. Bartolucci, D. F. Lozano-Garcia, J. A. Valdes, C. R. Valenzuela Jan 1984

Comparison Of Classification Schemes For Mss And Tm Data, P. E. Anuta, L. A. Bartolucci, D. F. Lozano-Garcia, J. A. Valdes, C. R. Valenzuela

LARS Technical Reports

The launch of the Landsat-4 satellite in July 1982 provided the first full coverage from space of the .4-12 µm spectrum of the earth scene. In addition to the green, red, and near IR bands of the MSS, the TM provides a band in the blue, two in the middle IR, and one thermal IR. The paper describes spectral class analysis of coincident MSS and TM data to evaluate the contribution of the additional TM bands. In addition, various classifiers are available which were applied to the TM data. In the spectral class analysis, twice the number of separable classes …

Progress Of The Blend-Linc 'Electronic Journal' Project, B. Shackel Jun 1983

Progress Of The Blend-Linc 'Electronic Journal' Project, B. Shackel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper describes the progress after 3 years of a 4 year experimenial programme organised jointly by two Universities as the Birmingham and Loughborough Electronic Network Development (BLEND). The aims of the programme are to explore and evaluate alternative forms of user communication through an 'electronic journal' and information network and to assess the cost, efficiency and subjective impact of such a system. Several communities of users are being studied, and the progress of the project is described during the development of various types of 'electronic journal' with a community of initially about 50 scientists (the Loughborough Information Network Community …

A Model For Storage Of Different Volumes Of A Journal In Electronic Data Processing: The Dortmund Online Library System Dobis, Martin Büren Jun 1983

A Model For Storage Of Different Volumes Of A Journal In Electronic Data Processing: The Dortmund Online Library System Dobis, Martin Büren

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The contribution deals with the processing of periodical volumes by the Dortmund Online Library System. As an integrated system DOBIS has to consider the divergent requisitions of circulation and cataloguing. For catalogue output it makes available bibliographically correct descriptions of the entire periodical. For circulation it provides information concerning the single periodical volume and its non-bibliographic data, e.g. status and circulation conditions. The bibliographic description and the affiliated volumes are connected in the data base by sorted references. By this means it is possible to show on the screen a list of the volumes belonging to a periodical in inverse …

Online Serials Control At The Eth Library, Rudolph Nöethiger Jun 1983

Online Serials Control At The Eth Library, Rudolph Nöethiger

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Since 1975 the ETH Library uses an automated periodicals control system called PEKOS (PEriodica-KOntroll-System). Version I, which could not yet handle title updates online, was soon replaced by the enhanced version of PEKOS-2.

A completely revised version, called PEKOS-3 was developed and implemented in the course of 1982. Some main functions of PEKOS are:

  • A fast method of identification for incoming copies using a simple mechanism for the abbreviation of titles
  • each single incoming issue is recorded
  • all recorded information on holdings can be queried and retrieved
  • reminders are issued periodically (a list of all claims issued is printed weekly …

Serials Automation: Fact Or Phobia - A Progress Report, Dan Tonkery, Rebecca T. Lenzini Jun 1983

Serials Automation: Fact Or Phobia - A Progress Report, Dan Tonkery, Rebecca T. Lenzini

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Even with the myriad of technological achievements in the computer industry and the advancements in software development, the library profession has not widely accepted the automation of the serials processing activities. Only a small number of organizations have successfully or fully automated serials. The Univeristy of California, Los Angeles, has one of the largest and most successful online serials processing systems in operation in North America. With their nineteen libraries containing some 70,000 serial titles, the computerization of serials processing is technologically sound and cost effective. A discussion of the system features, the technological issues that were addressed, and the …
