How To Grow Research Data Management Services And Uptake At A University, Janine Lockhart
How To Grow Research Data Management Services And Uptake At A University, Janine Lockhart
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), through the library, has ensured a functional environment to foster good Research Data Management (RDM) practices and services for the university community and in line with FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) principles to ensure transparency. The first RDM policy was approved in 2013 and subsequently reviewed, a research data repository, called eSango, powered by Figshare, was established in 2018 and a Data Management Plan (DMP) tool was developed and deployed. A preservation platform, Arkivum, was procured and a CoreTrustSeal submission is in process to secure and build trust in the research data …
Decolonising Information Literacy: Diversity Integration For Empowering Minority Groups, Elize Du Toit
Decolonising Information Literacy: Diversity Integration For Empowering Minority Groups, Elize Du Toit
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
For a long time, library guides (LibGuides) have been essential resources for linking students with information related to faculty, specific subjects, and coursework. However, the scope of LibGuides has expanded significantly in contemporary library practices. They now include a wide variety of resources, such as guides on particular library products, platforms, resources, instructional materials, and 'how-to' guides. These enhanced features demonstrate the changing requirements of library users as they navigate a more complicated academic environment. In 2016, the University of Johannesburg launched an online course on information literacy using the SpringShare LibGuide platform, which was highly successful. Originally created in …
Academic Library Identity And Space Design, Michael Crumpton
Academic Library Identity And Space Design, Michael Crumpton
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In academia, the library can be considered the heart and soul of the campus as well as instrumental to the curricula and course design for teaching and learning. How is the library perceived and identified for all the value created for stakeholders? The modern library is not just about books anymore, it is so much more. How do people identify with the academic library? What can make the most difference to contemporary students/researchers/scholars? How are spaces designed to recognize and enhance, all the multifaceted elements that stakeholders identify with the library?
Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Advancing Citation Justice In Scholarly Communication, Heather Cunningham
Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Advancing Citation Justice In Scholarly Communication, Heather Cunningham
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Voices of scholars are raised and amplified through the academic currency of citations. However, not all voices are heard and shared equally. Citation justice is an increasingly recognized issue within academic circles, focusing on the under-citation of women and people of color. This systemic bias, evident across many disciplines, impacts career progression, grant acquisition, and ultimately diversity among decision-makers. Citation practices are pivotal in shaping academic discourse, research, and education. Despite the significant influence of these practices, there is currently no comprehensive method to assess citation biases based on the demographics of authors. Efforts to measure diversity through computational analysis …

From Intent To Action: Reconciliation And Inclusion In Three Canadian Academic Libraries, Lisa O'Hara, Talia Chung, Vivian Lewis
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
A sense of belonging and inclusion creates conditions for individuals and organizations to thrive. Many Canadian university libraries have been initiating actions which advance reconciliation with Indigenous communities in Canada, and to support equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. Efforts to operationalize reconciliation and inclusion share important qualities yet require distinctive approaches due to historic and contemporary factors. Reconciliation in Canada must recognize the significance and centrality of the land to Indigenous communities. While inclusion strives to more broadly create conditions in which individuals may thrive, with a focus on those from groups who have historically faced systemic barriers. For both …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Academic libraries are an essential node of access to campus networks – and, therefore, a target of hackers, pirates, and other bad actors who want access to students’ personal information, licensed content, digitized special collections content, proprietary data, and other contents of your local networks that they see as valuable commodities ripe for financial exploitation or political or ideological manipulation. What can the library do to help prevent this kind of predatory access to campus networks, and why should they play a role in doing so? Join [guest university CISO], Rick Anderson (Brigham Young University) and Gwen Evans (Elsevier), for …

Research investments in crop improvements, including by national and international agricultural research centers, have made significant contributions to raising yields of staple food crops in developing countries. Although mostly intended to improve food security and rural incomes, innovations in crop production also have major implications for the environment. Building on the latest productivity estimates from historical crop improvements in developing countries and using a gridded (0.25 degrees) equilibrium model of global agriculture, we assess the impacts of improved crop varieties on cropland use, threatened biodiversity, and terrestrial carbon stocks over 1961–2015. We replicate a historical baseline and produce a counterfactual …

Punish Yet Cannot Discipline: Two Iraqi Prison Novels, Hanan Jasim Khammas
Punish Yet Cannot Discipline: Two Iraqi Prison Novels, Hanan Jasim Khammas
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Al-Munāḍil (The Militant) (1972) by ʿAzīz al-Sayyid Jāsim, and Iʿjām (Iʿjaam) (2004) by Sinan Antoon are two prison novels about the historical turning points which mark the rise and fall of the Baʿth regime in Iraq. While the first employs imprisonment as a lens through to expose the corruption and injustice exercised by the monarchy against the emergent revolutionary power, the second shows the Baʿthist government applying similar methods of surveillance, and of physical and psychological torture. Reading these texts by al-Sayyid Jāsim, who died in the Baʿth prisons, and by Antoon who wrote Iʿjaam …
The Networks Of Prison Narrative: Imagining Sociality And Making Narrative In Assad’S Syria, Anne-Marie Mcmanus
The Networks Of Prison Narrative: Imagining Sociality And Making Narrative In Assad’S Syria, Anne-Marie Mcmanus
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article argues for a new reading of collectivity – in both narrative voice and scenes of shared experience – in works of Syrian prison literature. Although these texts were published and are interpreted as the products of single author figures, the wider narrative field from which they emerge is shaped by numerous collective practices, from the oral and written to the digital. Breaking disciplinary boundaries around prison literature, this article introduces the term “prison narrative” and foregrounds diverse efforts by Syrian writers and former prisoners to imagine alternative formations of national experience and community under the Assad regime (1970-2024). …
Prison As A Living Being: ‘Assad’S Syria’ As A Model For The Imprisonment State, Jaber Baker
Prison As A Living Being: ‘Assad’S Syria’ As A Model For The Imprisonment State, Jaber Baker
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The Syrian Assad regime used prisons as tools of domination. As such, prisons had the power not only of active repression but also as places of detention and disappearance for Syrians. The expansion of political detention in Syria over fifty years transformed prison into a living being in the sense that prison became a part not just of Syrians' political life, but also of their social identity. One can recognize it in voices, attitudes, lifestyles, and even written and oral culture. Syrian cities are full of weapons since a large area of the urban space is inhabited by the buildings …
