Evaluating Workers’ Well-Being In Off-Site Construction Facilities, Sena Assaf, Mohamed Assaf, Ahmed Bouferguene, Mohamed Al-Hussein

CIB Conferences

Well-being is defined as “the way people feel and function on a personal and social level and how they evaluate their lives as a whole”. It encompasses several interrelated dimensions, including the physical, emotional, social, financial, environmental, vocational, and intellectual. An individual’s well-being is influenced not only by their personal experiences but also by their experiences at the workplace. Individuals spend nearly one-third of their life at work and tend to carry their experiences into non-work-related domains. As a result, promoting a work environment centered on employees’ health, happiness, and satisfaction not only is important to ensure efficiency and productivity …

The purpose of the broader research is to investigate the forms and dynamics that shape this urban environment using a problem-driven and phronetic approach that starts from local practice and context and later reframes them within scientific theory.

Bridging The Gap Between Environmental Sustainability And Building Operation In Office Buildings: Performance Measurement Based On User Behavior, Alice Paola Pomè, Chiara Tagliaro Jun 2025

Bridging The Gap Between Environmental Sustainability And Building Operation In Office Buildings: Performance Measurement Based On User Behavior, Alice Paola Pomè, Chiara Tagliaro

CIB Conferences

The Architecture-Engineering-Construction-Operation (AECO) industry is reshaping due to two major disruptions. First, the climate crisis underscored the urgency to reduce environmental pressures. The global debate on sustainable economies has emphasized the need for the sector to evolve, particularly in the operation and maintenance phase, which has the most significant potential to leverage environmental impact. Second, the COVID-19 pandemic changed social behavior, in particular, shifting work patterns toward more flexible modes and reducing office occupancy. While the variability in office utilization highlighted the need to rethink workspaces based on user behavior, existing tools cannot effectively measure the impact of Operation & …

Building Maintenance Strategy Selection Using Z-Numbers And The Delphi Method Enhanced Choosing By Advantages, Mahdi Anbari Moghadam, Deniz Besiktepe

CIB Conferences

Effective maintenance strategies are essential for prolonging the service life of buildings and ensuring seamless business operations. However, selecting the best maintenance strategy can be challenging due to the uncertain nature of building maintenance activities, which often depend on subjective human judgment. Traditional decision-making methods may not fully address these challenges, especially when dealing with conflicting criteria. Subsequently, decision-making methods such as Choosing by Advantages (CBA) received attention in the literature and were utilized in building maintenance decision-making due to their practical and user-friendly structure. This paper proposes a novel approach that integrates Z-numbers and the Delphi method to address …

Achieving The Un Sustainability Goals: The Role Of Digital Product Passports In The Architecture, Engineering And Construction Industry, Daniel Oteng, Richard Asante, Hossein Omrany, Bridget T.B. Eshun

CIB Conferences

The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry’s extensive resource consumption, solid waste and carbon dioxide emission generation hinder the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Digital product passports (DPPs) have been proposed to enhance the industry’s circularity and sustainability performance, thereby enabling the achievement of SDGs. However, among the few DPP studies, none of them specifically focuses on identifying which United Nations (UN) SDGs can be achieved by adopting DPPs in the AEC industry. This paper presents a systematic literature review exploring the role of DPPs in achieving the UN SDGs. Synthesis of the reviewed papers that …

Over the past two decades, productivity within construction has remained stagnant, posing challenges to meeting societal demands and sustainability targets. Recognizing the potential of digitalization to revolutionize construction processes, this research addresses the critical need to assess and benchmark organizational maturity and capabilities in the Canadian construction industry, particularly in the context of off-site construction methodologies. This research project aims to establish a comprehensive method for assessing organizational capabilities related to off-site construction, thereby providing insights into …

Vacancy To Vibrancy – External Effects, Finance Models And Collaboration In Heritage Building Revitalization. Framework, Hanna Sophie Bonekämper, Judith Nöfer, Kunibert Lennerts Jun 2025

Vacancy To Vibrancy – External Effects, Finance Models And Collaboration In Heritage Building Revitalization. Framework, Hanna Sophie Bonekämper, Judith Nöfer, Kunibert Lennerts

CIB Conferences

Vacant buildings can negatively impact a city's social and economic appeal. Addressing this issue is crucial, and the revitalization of these buildings becomes imperative. Revitalizations often require large investments, especially when it comes to listed buildings. Listed buildings are significant buildings that are legally protected to preserve their cultural heritage. Therefore these listed buildings must be revitalized in a sensitive way to preserve their unique character. This leads to discussions wether this high level of effort and costs is in relation to the building's long-term impact. At this point, it is sensible to incorporate external socio-economic effects such as the …

CIB Conferences

Purpose: Building Automation System (BAS) presents encouraging opportunities to optimise energy consumption while elevating occupants’ thermal comfort. BAS ranges from regular thermostatic valves to home automation systems (HAS), in residential buildings. Well-designed HAS advantage in occupant spaces, providing optimum occupant comfort and energy efficiency. However, not accompanying essential parameters such as real-time climate conditions and occupancy thermal behaviour prevent real-time responsive HAS developments. Existing studies demonstrate an elevated need for efficient HAS, which can potentially consider these significant influencing factors with real-time responses. A developed approach that considers these dynamic changes provides an accurate HAS that addresses the current performance …

Metaverse Applications In Construction Research: Are We There Yet?, Mohamed Assaf, Sena Assaf, Mohamed Al-Hussein, Xinming Li

CIB Conferences

Despite the significant potential of extended reality (XR) technologies in construction research, achieving a collaborative virtual environment that allows real-time engagements among various geographically remote stakeholders is a challenge. Building upon XR technologies, metaverse technology was introduced recently in construction research as a possible solution to address this issue, as it allows multiple users to engage and communicate in virtual environments. Being introduced recently, the applications of the metaverse in construction research (ConVerse) remain immature, vague, and unexplored. Seasoned researchers interested in the ConVerse research still need a reference guide to better understand the potential of the metaverse and its …

Bridging Academia And Construction Industry: Insights From Sequential Multi-Internship Experiences, Brandon Fulk, Sogand Hasanzadeh

CIB Conferences

The industry-sponsored internship is a learner-centered pedagogy rooted in the experiential learning model. While existing literature extensively highlights the importance of experiential learning and internships, a significant gap remains regarding the effectiveness of sequential multi-internship programs. This study investigates students' overall experiences within a sequential multi-internship program, leveraging survey data that captures their reflections across three internships. The analysis postulated that generally, students demonstrated increased positive experience from their first internship to their third. Additionally, the study examined how the diversity and number of companies—whether students interned with one, two, or three—impacts their overall experience. These findings inform the development …
