The Activation Of Open Building Through An Adoption Of Mass Timber Construction: A Case Series Analysis, Paul D. Kremer, Ron Wakefield, Alireza Ahankoob, Behzad Abbasnejad
CIB Conferences
Open Building (OB) represents a fundamental shift in the approach to building design viewing the overall superstructure (the base building) as one element and each unit/residence within (the infill/fitout) as separable non-standardised spaces. Mass Timber Construction (MTC) is a modern approach to building that utilises large structural wood components to create sustainable and innovative structures. To support and enable an OB approach MTC technology presents itself as a promising activating agent for the benefits of OB. The present study is a case series of five projects. The aim was to find evidence supporting a relationship between OB and MTC. A …

A Whole Life Cycle Approach To Circular Economy Interventions In The Residential Sector: Systematic Literature Review, Dona Iresha Chandanie Gurusinghe, Usha Iyer-Raniga, Trivess Moore
CIB Conferences
The residential sector is responsible for substantial resource consumption, waste generation, and pollutant emissions. This is largely due to the conventional linear economy model, which relies on resource extraction and generates significant waste and emissions through a "take-make-dispose" approach. This linear market approach is incompatible with a low-carbon future. In contrast, the Circular Economy (CE) promotes a sustainable closed-loop system that prolongs and optimises resource utilisation, benefiting economic, environmental, and social domains as required for a low-carbon future. The concept of CE remains under-explored in the residential sector. This paper presents a systematic literature review of existing CE interventions in …

Effects Of Dormitory Design Factors On Migrant Workers’ Mental Health In Singapore, Tianxiang Lan, Yang Miang Goh, Hanxiao Wang, Xinping Hu
CIB Conferences
Migrant workers face vulnerability and unique mental health challenges in their host countries. Housing designs may affect the residents’ mental health, yet few studies have investigated this relationship in the migrant worker dormitory context. In this study, we investigated this question by surveying the design factors of migrant workers’ dormitories and their mental health states measured by the short version of the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS). We found that those migrant workers’ mental health is correlated with whether one has a pleasant window view, defined as green, blue (water feature) or long-distance view. The findings suggest that the elements …

Sufficiency can be defined as a situation when a purpose has been achieved, a need has been met and a desired and optimal state has been achieved. In terms of sustainability, it is seen as a strategy for achieving human needs without exceeding the Earth's planetary boundaries. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has identified sufficiency as having a critical role in achieving climate targets. Sufficiency is also increasingly being integrated in national energy and sustainability strategies. However, sufficiency has not been included as an explicit factor in sustainable and green building rating tools. This study investigates the implications …

Extreme weather events increasingly challenge urban transportation systems, requiring advanced methods to understand and predict traffic adaptations. Traditional graph-based approaches to traffic analysis, while effective for static conditions, struggle to capture the continuous and dynamic nature of flow patterns during weather disruptions. Current methods lack the mathematical framework to bridge discrete network structures with continuous flow dynamics, particularly in analyzing how traffic patterns reorganize under stress. This paper presents a novel field-theoretic framework for analyzing traffic flow patterns, integrating Hodge decomposition with continuous field visualization. The framework decomposes traffic flows into three fundamental components: gradient flows representing direct movements, curl …
