Decision Making And Uncertainty, Donald G. Davis Jr., E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1992

Decision Making And Uncertainty, Donald G. Davis Jr., E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

In an article intitled, “Epistemological Dead End and Ergonomic Disaster? The North Amercian Collections Inventory Project,” Journal of Academic Librarianship 13 (September 1987): 209-213, David Henige charges that academic libraries are deceiving themselves when they assign a number to a subject collection and claim that this number represents the strength of the collection. Assigning numbers or levels to subject collections is the methodology used by the RLG Conspectus to rate academic collections. This article by Davis and Saunders offers a counter argument, based on subjective probabilities, to justify the RLG procedure.

Willing To Provide But Unable To Support: The Dilemma Of Smaller Depositories In An Electronic Era , Bert Chapman Jan 1992

Willing To Provide But Unable To Support: The Dilemma Of Smaller Depositories In An Electronic Era , Bert Chapman

Libraries Research Publications

The increasing influence of government information in electronic format poses acute problems for smaller depositories facing financial and personnel shortages. These constraints will increase the dependence of smalier depositories on regional depositories and may compel the smaller institutions to reassess the viability of their depository status. This cumulative predicament will make some government information inacces-sibIe to users of smaller depositories.

Recognition of this should be augmented by acceptance of the reality that existing Federal budgetary pressures, coupled with trends toward user fees in other sectors of librarianship, make free and unimpeded access to all government information an unrealistic public policy …

JTRP Technical Reports

The report presents the findings of a study that investigated the potential uses of new technologies in INDOT. A survey of state transport agencies were conducted and the major groups of technologies identified are: CADD, GIS, Advanced Survey Techniques, Knowledge-Based Expert Systems, Planning and Programming Mdels, and a workshop with the INDOT executive staff were conducted to determine the priority areas for advanced technology applications. Suggestions were then made for the development of a new technology program within INDOT.

Fatigue Strength And Evaluation Of Sign Structures, Volume 1: Analysis And Evaluation, Xuejun Li, Timothy M. Whalen, Mark D. Bowman

JTRP Technical Reports

This report is a two-volume final report presenting the findings of the research work that was undertaken to evaluate the fatigue behavior of sign structures and, based on that evaluation, to recommend an inspection plan that can be effectively used to detect and minimize possible deterioration due to wind induced loadings of sign structures. The study included a number of signs that are commonly used in Indiana: single-mastarm and double-mastarm cantilever sign structures, box-truss sign structures, tri-chord sign structures, and monotube sign structures. Sign structures with typical dimensions and details were selected as prototypes for each of the various types …

Output Feedback Variable Structure Controllers And State Estimators For Uncertain Dynamic Systems, Stanislaw H. Zak, Stefen Hui Nov 1991

Output Feedback Variable Structure Controllers And State Estimators For Uncertain Dynamic Systems, Stanislaw H. Zak, Stefen Hui

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we propose a new class of output feedback variable structure controllers and state estimators (observers) for uncertain dynamic systems with hounded uncertainties. No statistical information about the uncertain elements is assumed. A variable structure systems (VSS) approach together with the geometric approach to the analysis and synthesis of system zeros are employed in the synthesis of the proposed output feedback controllers and state estimators. The role of system zeros in the output feedback stabilization and state estimation, using the VSS approach, is discussed. Numerical examples included illustrate the feasibility of the proposed stabilization and state estimation schemes.
