A Comparison Of Managers' Uncertainty Perceptions And Country Risk Indices, Kent D. Miller
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
This study compares mangers' perceptions of political, government policy, and macroeconomic uncertainties with the ratings provided by a professional rish assessment service. Survey data from six Latin American countries indicate rank orderings of the coutnries based on managers' uncertainty perceptions differ fromt he professional rish assessment ranking.
Information And Normal Backwardation As Determinants Of Trading Performance: Evidence From The North-Sea Oil Forward Market, Gordon M. Phillips, Robert J. Weiner
Information And Normal Backwardation As Determinants Of Trading Performance: Evidence From The North-Sea Oil Forward Market, Gordon M. Phillips, Robert J. Weiner
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
In this paper we take advantage of a unique micro-database on forward trading in the international petroleum market, with information on the buyer and seller in each transaction. We utilize transaction-specific data to test directly predictions from the theory of normal backwardation vs. information-based predictions of who profits in these markets. We find that no trader groups make significan profits on interday measures. Within the day, however, groups likely to have superior information do make significant profits. The results are not supportive of normal backwardation, but are consistent with the time pattern of information dissemination in this market--deals made during …

Parallel programs often exhibit strong preferences for different system structures, and machines with the ideal structures may all be available within a single heterogeneous network. There is also the complication that, although a particular application might execute fastest when running by itself on one system, the best turnaround time might result from running the program on a diffeient system that is less heavily loaded at the time the job is submitted. In this paper, we suggest that application programmers should be able to write their code using whatever programming model, control or data parallel, they feel is most appropriate - …

Compiler-Assisted Cache Coherence, Chiiwen Liou, Henry G. Dietz
Compiler-Assisted Cache Coherence, Chiiwen Liou, Henry G. Dietz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Although it is convenient to program multiprocessors as though all processors share access to the same memory, it is difficult to construct hardware directly implementing this model. Allowing each processor to have its own independent cache partially solves this problem; unfortunately, different caches might hold different values for the same main memory address. Making the cache hardware always be coherent - one value per address - makes the hardware expensive and slow. This paper proposes compiler analysis to generate explicit cache control instructions to ensure that all program memory accesses execute as though the caches were coherent. Compared to other …
