Reading Orientalism And The Crisis Of Epistemology In The Novels Of Lawrence Durrell, James Gifford
Reading Orientalism And The Crisis Of Epistemology In The Novels Of Lawrence Durrell, James Gifford
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Reading Orientalism and the Crisis of Epistemology in the Novels of Lawrence Durrell," James Gifford argues that Edward Said's Orientalism has had a far reaching impact on the study of literature as well as in Comparative Literature, especially in works which depict the "Eastern Other." However, a question arises in those texts which have completed the philosophical motion from existentialism to epistemological skepticism such as the novels of Lawrence Durrell. For example, in The Avignon Quintet a provisional and even counterfactual form of knowledge becomes central and obvious to the reader. Subsequently, knowledge of the Other becomes …
Segmenting The Commercial Producer Marketplace For Agricultural Inputs, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge
Segmenting The Commercial Producer Marketplace For Agricultural Inputs, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
A cluster analysis procedure was used to develop a market segmentation of U.S. crop and livestock farms with annual sales in excess of $100,000. The segments were developed based on the importance of six factors that producers evaluate when selecting input suppliers. The results indicate that four distinct segments exist: Convenience buyers, Balance buyers, Price buyers, and Performance buyers. Differences in preferences across these segments have important implications for the marketing strategies of agricultural input suppliers.
Novel Quantization Schemes For Very Low Bit Rate Video Coding Based On Sample Adaptation, Dong Sik Kim, Ness B. Shroff
Novel Quantization Schemes For Very Low Bit Rate Video Coding Based On Sample Adaptation, Dong Sik Kim, Ness B. Shroff
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report, we introduce a novel feed-forward adaptive quantization scheme called SAPQ (sampleadaptive product quantizer) as a structurally constrained vector quantizer. SAPQ is based on a concept of adaptive quantization to the varying samples of the source and is very different, from traditional adaptation techniques for non-stationary sources. SAPQ quantizes each source sample using a sequence of quantizers. Even when using scalar quantization in SAPQ, we can achieve perforrnance comparable to vector quantization (with the complexity still of the order of scalar quantization). We also show that important lattice based vector quantizers can be constructed using scalar quantization in …
The Innocence Of Children: Effects Of Vulgarity In South Park, Emily Ravenwood
The Innocence Of Children: Effects Of Vulgarity In South Park, Emily Ravenwood
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Emily Ravenwood examines in her article, "The Innocence of Children: Effects of Vulgarity in South Park" the way in which the appropriation of low culture into high art can operate to simultaneously raise and lower the cultural capital of the art in question. Usually, in definitions of high and low art vulgarity is understood as a negative representation. This dismissal is rooted in the linguistic and political relationship between vulgarity and perceived "lower class" realities. In the context of artistic representation, however, vulgarity can be a powerful weapon to enforce attention and awareness of foreign realities in a middle class …
Poetic Image And Tradition In Western European Modernism, José Manuel Losada Goya
Poetic Image And Tradition In Western European Modernism, José Manuel Losada Goya
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
José Manuel Losada Goya investigates in his article "Poetic Image and Tradition in Western European Modernism: Pound, Lorca, Claudel," aspects of poetic imagery in modernism. The analysis of the changes brought about by modern poetry involves just as much the study of content as it does of form. In the very beginning of modernity, the poet feels the necessity to invent another tradition, distinct in spatial-temporal parameters and in rhetorical procedures. In the article, attention is paid to both the re-modification of the phonological figures (especially in rhyme and rhythm) and the restructuring of lexical levels (especially in metaphor and …
Some Observations About The Suicide Of The Adulteress In The Modern Novel, Babis Dermitzakis
Some Observations About The Suicide Of The Adulteress In The Modern Novel, Babis Dermitzakis
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Babis Dermitzakis posits in his article "Some Observations about the Suicide of the Adulteress in the Modern Novel" that in three major male-authored European novels -- Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, and Thérèse Raquin -- the protagonists are wives who commit adultery ending in suicide. In contrast, texts by women authors of the period show no similar description and perception of adultery by women. Dermitzakis suspects that the male writers did not simply fictionalize a specific social behavior or condition; rather, they likely imported their own prejudices about women's adultery -- and more generally about women's sexuality -- into their …
East Central Europe As A Politically Correct Scapegoat: The Case Of Bulgaria, Roumiana Deltcheva
East Central Europe As A Politically Correct Scapegoat: The Case Of Bulgaria, Roumiana Deltcheva
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Roumiana Deltcheva analyzes in her article "East Central Europe as a Politically Correct Scapegoat: The Case of Bulgaria" the mechanisms of image construction of East Central Europe in the West, taking Bulgaria as a case study as seen in literary and filmic texts. A historical overview of literary and theoretical texts which deal with the cultural semiosphere of Bulgaria is presented to demonstrate that contrary to widely held perceptions in North American (US and Canada) "politically correct" scholarship, Europe is not a homogeneous cultural unity. In fact, a clear centre/periphery situation is established and delineated along the geographical axis West/East …

Entropy Theory And Ras Are Friends, Robert A. Mcdougall
Entropy Theory And Ras Are Friends, Robert A. Mcdougall
GTAP Working Papers Archive
Recent research in applications of entropy theory to matrix balancing problems in economics has put powerful new tools in the hands of data base developers, but overshadowed some previous findings. We recall earlier findings that the RAS is an entropy-theoretic model. Investigating the properties of a more recently proposed entropy-theoretic model, we find that in general the RAS remains preferable. We show further that the RAS can be obtained also as a generalised cross-entropy model. Finally, we present examples illus-trating how entropy-theoretic techniques can extend the RAS to handle a wider range of problems.

Integrated Detection And Estimation Using Multisensor And Distributed Processing, Rangasami L. Kashyap
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This research deals with the solution of detection and estimation problems encountered in a variety of target tracking problems encountered in a Ballistic Missile Defense environment. We propose five broad classes of problems. The first problem deals with the guidance for interceptors tracking maneuverable targets. We need to forecast the time of intersection and the bearing angle of the target, and have to update them continuously. The second problem is the robust tracking of moving targets, especially with the tracks close to one another. Our approach avoids the data association lacunae of the existing methods. Next we deal with targets …

Evaluation Of Heuristics In A Distributed Data Staging Network, Noah B. Beck, Mitchell D. Theys, Howard Jay Siegel, Michael Jurczykt
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Providing up-to-date input to users' applications is an important data management problem for a distributed computing environment, where each data storage location and intermediate node may have specific data available, storage limitations, and communication links available. Sites in the network request data items and each request has an associated deadline and priority. In a military situation, the data staging problem involves positioning data for facilitating a faster access time when it is needed by programs that will aid in decision making. This work concentrates on solving a basic version of the data staging problem in which all parameter values for …

What's Past Is Prologue: Imagining The Socialist Nation In Cuba And In Hungary, Patricia D. Fox
What's Past Is Prologue: Imagining The Socialist Nation In Cuba And In Hungary, Patricia D. Fox
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Patricia D. Fox's article, "What's Past is Prologue: Imagining the Socialist Nation in Cuba and in Hungary," examines the symbolic mooring of Cuban and Hungarian identity, recuperated Caliban from William Shakespeare's The Tempest and an ever conflicted Faustus/Adam from Imre Madách's Az ember tragédiája, respectively. Despite serial cosmological fragmentations and political upheaval, the present analysis holds that production and reproduction of these founding figures in the process of imagining the socialist nation represent an ongoing litigation of meaning. This process then conserves a marked thematic continuity through temporal conceptions, totality of exegesis, the mix of rational and mythical, and the …

Very Low-Complexity Digital Filters Based On Computational Redundancy Reduction, Khurram Muhammad, Kaushik Roy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We present computation reduction t,echniques which can be used to obtain multiplierless implementations of finite impulse response (FIR.) digital filters. The ideas presented in this work are also applicable to infinite i~!pulsere sponse (IIR) digital filters. The main idea is to remove computational redundancy by reordering computation. Hence, the frequency response of the desired filter is unaltered. Various approaches are presented which consider normal, diflerential and hybrid coefficients. It is shown that the reordering prl2blem can be formulated using a graph in which vertices represent the coefficients and edges represent resources required in a computation involving the coefficient. We present …

A Computational Redundancy Reduction Approach For High Performaice And Low Power Dsp Algorithm Implementation, Khurram Muhammad, Kaushik Roy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper, we present a general approach which specifically targets reduction of redundant computation in common d'igital signal processing (DSP) tasks such as filtering and matrix multiplication. The main idea presented in this work is to show that such tasks can be expressed as multiplication of vectors by scalars and fast multiplication can be achieved by sharing computation in such operations. The multiplication schemes considerably reduce redundant computation by decomposing the vectors in a manner which results in maximal computation sharing, thereby, resulting in a faster and potentially low-power implementation. Two decomposition approaches are presented, one based on a …

The Comparative Method And The Study Of Literature, Aldo Nemesio
The Comparative Method And The Study Of Literature, Aldo Nemesio
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Aldo Nemesio argues in his article "The Comparative Method and the Study of Literature" for the comparative method as follows. Contemporary literary research is based on parameters and methods which do not appear to have evolved similar to other fields of inquiry. If the study of literature is concerned with literary behavior, for instance, the object of study cannot limit itself to a single author or to a limited number of authors and what surrounds them closely. Also, national boundaries are too narrow: what happens within the boundaries of a culture can be understood only if we relate it to …
