Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics of the (massive) Nambu-Goldstone scalar degree of freedom associated with the spontaneous breaking of the isometry group of AdS(d+1) space to that of an AdS(d) subspace. The resulting action is an SO(2,d) invariant AdS generalization of the Nambu-Goto action. The vector field theory equivalent action is also determined. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics associated with the spontaneous breaking of the local symmetries of AdS(d+1) space due to the embedding of an AdS(d) brane. The resulting action is an SO(2,d) invariant AdS form of the Einstein-Hilbert action, which in addition to the AdS(d) gravitational vielbein, also includes a massive vector field localized on the brane. Its long wavelength dynamics is the same as a massive Abelian vector field coupled to gravity in AdS(d) space.

In e(+)e(-) collisions recorded using the CLEO II.V detector we have studied the Cabibbo suppressed decay of D-0->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) with the initial flavor of the D-0 tagged by the decay D*+-> D(0)pi(+). We use the Dalitz-plot analysis technique to measure the resonant substructure in this final state and observe rho pi and nonresonant contributions by fitting for their amplitudes and relative phases. We describe the pi pi S wave with a K-matrix formalism and limit this contribution to the rate to be < 2.5%@95% confidence level, in contrast to the large rate observed in D+->pi(+)pi(-)pi(+) decay. Using the amplitudes and phases from this analysis, we calculate an integrated CP asymmetry of 0.01(-0.07)(+0.09)+/- …

In time series analysis, it has been considered of key importance to determine whether a complex time series measured from the system is regular, deterministically chaotic, or random. Recently, Gottwald and Melbourne have proposed an interesting test for chaos in deterministic systems. Their analyses suggest that the test may be universally applicable to any deterministic dynamical system. In order to fruitfully apply their test to complex experimental data, it is important to understand the mechanism for the test to work, and how it behaves when it is employed to analyze various types of data, including those not from clean deterministic …

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have studied the distribution of kinematic variables in the decay Lambda(c)(+)->Lambda e(+)nu(e). By performing a four-dimensional maximum likelihood fit, we determine the form factor ratio, R=f(2)/f(1)=-0.31 +/- 0.05(stat)+/- 0.04(syst), the pole mass, M-pole=[2.21 +/- 0.08(stat)+/- 0.14(syst)] GeV/c(2), and the decay asymmetry parameter of the Lambda(c)(+), alpha(Lambda c)=-0.86 +/- 0.03(stat)+/- 0.02(syst), for < q(2)>=0.67 (GeV/c(2))(2). We compare the angular distributions of the Lambda(c)(+) and (Lambda) over bar (-)(c) and find no evidence for CP violation: A(Lambda c)=(alpha(Lambda c)+alpha((Lambda) over barc))/(alpha(Lambda c)-alpha((Lambda) over barc))=0.00 +/- 0.03(stat)+/- 0.01(syst)+/- 0.02, where the third …

The zero-temperature properties of a dilute two-component Fermi gas in the BCS to Bose-Einstein Condensation crossover are investigated. On the basis of a generalization of the Hylleraas-Undheim method, we construct rigorous upper bounds to the collective frequencies for the radial and the axial breathing mode of the Fermi gas under harmonic confinement in the framework of the hydrodynamic theory. The bounds are compared to experimental data for trapped vapors of Li-6 atoms.

We present measurements of the branching fractions for J/psi -> e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) using 3M psi(2S) decays collected with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e(+)e(-) collider. We obtain B(J/psi -> e(+)e(-))=(5.945 +/- 0.067 +/- 0.042)% and B(J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-))=(5.960 +/- 0.065 +/- 0.050)%, leading to an average of B(J/psi -> l(+)l(-))=(5.953 +/- 0.056 +/- 0.042)% and a ratio of B(J/psi -> e(+)e(-))/B(J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-))=(99.7 +/- 1.2 +/- 0.6)%, all consistent with, but more precise than, previous measurements.

Using 3.08x10(6) psi(2S) decays observed in e(+)e(-) collisions by the CLEO detector, we present the results of a study of the psi(2S) decaying into baryon-antibaryon final states. We report the most precise measurements of the following eight modes: p (p) over bar, Lambda(Lambda) over bar, Sigma(+)(Sigma(+)) over bar (first observation), Sigma(0)(Sigma(0)) over bar, Xi(-)(Xi(-)) over bar, and Xi(0)(Xi(0)) over bar (first observation), and place upper limits for the modes Xi(1530)(0)(Xi 1530) over bar and Omega(-)(Omega(-)) over bar.

Motivated by the recent discovery of a hierarchical X-ray flaring phenomenon in Mrk 421, we conducted a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 501, another well-known TeV blazar, by making use of the rich RXTE archival database. We detected flares over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes, as in the case of Mrk 421. However, the flares do not seem to occur nearly as frequently in Mrk 501 as in Mrk 421 on any of the timescales. The flaring hierarchy also seems apparent in Mrk 501, suggesting that it might be common among TeV blazars. …

An international project between the Mechanical Engineering Technology Department at Purdue University and the HVAC Engineering Department at HTA Lucerne (Switzerland) is testing the limits of the remote access concept by creating a laboratory network that is separated by thousands of miles. Using web-enabled HVAC equipment, U.S. students are determining the performance and return on investment for a heat recovery system that is physically located in Switzerland. The converse is also true, Swiss students have access to a variety of equipment located in the U.S. This remote access project is a good example of a sustainable partnership that adds an …

We investigate the decays D-0-->pi(-)l(+)nu and D-0-->K(-)l(+)nu, where l is e or mu, using approximately 7 fb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO III detector. We find R-0=B(D-0-->pi(-)e(+)nu)/B(D-0-->K(-)e(+)nu)=0.082+/-0.006+/-0.005. Fits to the kinematic distributions of the data provide parameters describing the form factor of each mode. Combining the form factor results and R-0 gives |f(+)(pi)(0)|(2)|V-cd|(2)/|f(+)(K)(0)|(2)|V-cs|(2)=0.038(-0.007-0.003)(+0.006+0.005).

We investigate the applicability of spin-polarization measurements using Andreev reflection in a point-contact geometry in heavily doped dilute magnetic semiconductors, such as (Ga,Mn)As. Although we observe conventional Andreev reflection in nonmagnetic (Ga,Be)As epilayers, our measurements indicate that in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As epilayers with comparable hole concentration the conductance spectra can only be adequately described by a broadened density of states and a reduced superconducting gap. We suggest that these pair-breaking effects stem from inelastic scattering in the metallic impurity band of (Ga,Mn)As and can be explained by introducing a finite quasiparticle lifetime or a higher effective temperature. For (Ga,Mn)As with 8% …

Modernism’S Jews / Jewish Modernisms: Introduction, Maren Linett
Department of English Faculty Publications
This special issue, as its title suggests, considers some of the processes by which Jewish writers shaped literary modernism, and the intricate ways modernism was in turn shaped by its figurings of Jews and Jewishness. Although analysis of the political and aesthetic work Jewishness performs for modernist literature is beginning to make its way into studies of modernist negotiations with race, culture, and religion, it is still primarily seen as a side-topic within such inquiries, something to be explored only by those with a “special interest” in Jewish studies. This compartmentalization causes critics to miss the importance of Jewishness as …

Family Impact Seminars have been well received by federal policymakers in Washington, DC, and Indiana is one of several states to sponsor such seminars for state policymakers. Family Impact Seminars provide state-of-the-art research on current family issues for state legislators and their aides, Governor's Office staff, state agency representatives, educators, and service providers. One of the best ways to help individuals is by strengthening their families. Therefore, the Family Impact Seminars speakers analyze the consequences an issue, policy or program may have for families. The seminars provide objective, nonpartisan information on current issues and do not lobby for particular policies. …
