Dust And The Avant-Garde, Jake Kennedy Jun 2005

Dust And The Avant-Garde, Jake Kennedy

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Dust and the Avant-Garde," Jake Kennedy presents an interdisciplinary exploration of experimental modernism in the work of visual artist Marcel Duchamp and writer Gertrude Stein. Kennedy focuses on the strange presence of dust in the work of these two artists and argues that as an abject object -- it is literally the unwanted of domestic space -- the idea of dust engages radically modernism on a material level. Dust is also the unwanted of modernity itself, as it represents a potentially subversive sister-part to urban, masculine modernity's valorisation of machinery, glass, and steel. Transmuted into the metaphysical …

Reality Tv, Faking It, And The Transformation Of Personal Identity, Joanne Morreale Jun 2005

Reality Tv, Faking It, And The Transformation Of Personal Identity, Joanne Morreale

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Reality TV, Faking It, and the Transformation of Personal Identity," Joanne Morreale examines the hybrid makeover, game, and reality TV show Faking It as a cultural form that portrays the transformation of personal identity through performance. Morreale argues that the contents and performance of the show intensify the link between consumer culture and the fabrication of identity by teaching that fulfillment comes from becoming, rather than having, a commodity. In the show, participants learn to perform new selves that are perceived as "better." Faking It thus puts on display the processes of fabrication whereby the self is …

But... Can The Subaltern Sing?, Rebecca Romanow

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "But... Can the Subaltern Sing?," Rebecca Romanow discusses the dominance of the English language in rock music and the cultural values and global power that are exerted through the exportation of rock by American and British bands. Further, she explores the question of the ways in which this music represents an area of popular culture where the voices of the non-English speaking and the non-Western are silenced. Salman Rushdie, in The Ground Beneath Her Feet, complains that rock music "is precisely one of those viruses with which the almighty West has infected the East, one of the …

Political Deliberation And E-Participation In Policy-Making, Rebecca J. Romsdahl Jun 2005

Political Deliberation And E-Participation In Policy-Making, Rebecca J. Romsdahl

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Political Deliberation and E-Participation in Policy-Making," Rebecca J. Romsdahl proposes that the internet has now become a valuable medium for information dissemination and long distance communication; it is also gaining attention as a potential tool for political deliberation. Public participation has been a long-standing tradition in American democracy but most scholars today believe it needs a revival. Some of these scholars believe that e-participation in policy-making could help revitalize political discussion between citizens and government and promote greater participation by disenfranchised groups. Whether this would lead to greater opportunities for true deliberation on political issues and not …

Nation, Heritage, And Hospitality In Britain After Thatcher, Ryan S. Trimm Jun 2005

Nation, Heritage, And Hospitality In Britain After Thatcher, Ryan S. Trimm

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Nation, Heritage, and Hospitality in Britain after Thatcher," Ryan S. Trimm examines the trope of cultural inheritance in postimperial Britain. "Heritage," an ubiquitous term in 1980s Britain, circulates largely as a conservative concept, an imagined bequest that works to exclude groups such as minorities who are disinherited putatively by not being part of the past and conceived as handing down some legacy. Such seems to be precisely the way heritage functioned under Margaret Thatcher's heritage politics, a collection of policies that associated icons such as the country house with the nation itself. However, although appeals to heritage …

The Future Of The Academic Library And The Academic Librarian. A Delphi Study Reloaded, Blazej Feret, Marzena Marcinek

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

At the 20th IATUL Conference held in 1999 in Chania, Greece, the authors presented a paper The Future of the Academic Library and the Academic Librarian. A DELPHI Study 3. The aim of that study was to identify trends and present a probable scenario for the year 2005. After six years that have passed since the Conference in Chania, we live in a different world. Different not only because of terrorism and the latest natural disasters, but also because of changes in technology (e.g. the boom of mobile communication, transition from CD/DVD to online services, ease of digitization, etc.), internationalization …

A Researcher's Research Agenda For Scholarly Communication In Canada, William F. Birdsall, Kathleen Shearer May 2005

A Researcher's Research Agenda For Scholarly Communication In Canada, William F. Birdsall, Kathleen Shearer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Despite millions of dollars being spent on research each year in Canada, little attention is paid to the dissemination of the results of research. There is a disconnect between Canadian public policies in this area; although a high priority is assigned to the generation of research, there is a lack of policies addressing its dissemination. Meanwhile, the environment in which research knowledge is being disseminated is undergoing a profound transformation because of several important drivers. In particular, these drivers include new technology, changing research patterns, new users, economics, and commercialization. The major objective of this study was to examine the …

Digital Repositories: All Hype And No Substance, Marinus Swanepoel May 2005

Digital Repositories: All Hype And No Substance, Marinus Swanepoel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The development of digital repositories has been a recent one, starting in late 2000 when the UK's University of Southampton released a software package called E-Prints. Since that time, the establishment of digital repositories has gained momentum. Factors such as the falling costs for online storage, the increase of broadband and gigabit networking technologies, as well as the development of metadata standards to describe repository content, all contributed to their current popularity. Questions to be asked are: to what extent is digital repositories, as a method for communicating scientific and scholarly information, accepted or is it just hype?; how mature …

Repositories: What's The Target? An Arrow Perspective, Derek Whitehead May 2005

Repositories: What's The Target? An Arrow Perspective, Derek Whitehead

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The key observation about institutional research repositories is that they are under-used. This paper looks at why take-up has been slow, and what might encourage researchers to use these facilities.

This paper surveys the evolution of practice and rationale for the institutional research repository, looks at existing use studies and opinion surveys of users, and examines ways in which university libraries, the main proponents, have changed their approaches in response to their experience. The experience of Swinburne University of Technology, a partner in the Australian ARROW project, is drawn upon.

Near-Optimal Worst-Case Throughput Routing For Two-Dimensional Mesh Networks, Daeho Seo, Akif Ali, Won-Taek Lim, Nauman Rafique, Mithuna Thottethodi Apr 2005

Near-Optimal Worst-Case Throughput Routing For Two-Dimensional Mesh Networks, Daeho Seo, Akif Ali, Won-Taek Lim, Nauman Rafique, Mithuna Thottethodi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Minimizing latency and maximizing throughput are important goals in the design of routing algorithms for interconnection networks. Ideally, we would like a routing algorithm to (a) route packets using the minimal number of hops to reduce latency and preserve communication locality, (b) deliver good worst-case and average-case throughput and (c) enable low-complexity (and hence, low latency) router implementation. In this paper, we focus on routing algorithms for an important class of interconnection networks: two dimensional (2D) mesh networks. Existing routing algorithms for mesh networks fail to satisfy one or more of design goals mentioned above. Variously, the routing algorithms suffer …

Multiscale Segmentation With Vector-Valued Nonlinear Diffusions On Arbitrary Graphs, Xiaogang Dong, Ilya Pollak Mar 2005

Multiscale Segmentation With Vector-Valued Nonlinear Diffusions On Arbitrary Graphs, Xiaogang Dong, Ilya Pollak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We propose a novel family of nonlinear diffusion equations and apply it to the problem of segmentation of multi-valued images. We show that this family can be viewed as an extension of stabilized inverse diffusion equations (SIDEs) which were proposed for restoration, enhancement, and segmentation of scalar-valued signals and images in [39]. Our new diffusion equations can process vector-valued images defined on arbitrary graphs which makes them well suited for segmentation. In addition, we introduce novel ways of utilizing the shape nformation during the diffusion process. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods on a large number of texture segmentation …
