Stiffness Of Hot-Mix Asphalt, Terhi K. Pellinen, Shangzhi Xiao Jan 2006

Stiffness Of Hot-Mix Asphalt, Terhi K. Pellinen, Shangzhi Xiao

JTRP Technical Reports

This research was initiated from a need to evaluate marginal mixtures that do not meet the Superpave mix design criteria for the air voids content requirements for the construction of hot mix asphalt pavements. The developed criteria is comprised of the base criteria derived from test data of as-placed field cores normalized to 7.5% air voids content, which provides the minimum stiffness and strength requirements for a mixture as a function of the traffic level. The stiffness of pavement cores is measured using Simple Shear Tester to obtain shear stiffness |G*| of mix and strength is measured using indirect tensile …

The project corridor was about 6 km long. Least Squares Image …

Expert System To Support Site Investigation For Safety Improvement, Andrzej Marcin. Kwasniak, Bogdan Chivoiu, Andrzej P. Tarko Jan 2006

Expert System To Support Site Investigation For Safety Improvement, Andrzej Marcin. Kwasniak, Bogdan Chivoiu, Andrzej P. Tarko

JTRP Technical Reports

One of the goals of traffic safety specialists is to improve road geometry and traffic control at high-crash locations to reduce the risk of crash. The most difficult part of site investigation is determining the causes of crashes. This task may be overwhelming, particularly for inexperienced investigators. Experienced investigators often may have difficulties in connecting various pieces of information and knowledge due to the high level of uncertainty, the high complexity of safety impacts, and the gaps in what is known about driver performance during the crash occurrence. An AI method is proposed to help investigators identify the crash causes. …

Freight Flows Of Indiana, William R. Black Jan 2006

Freight Flows Of Indiana, William R. Black

JTRP Technical Reports

Using data primarily from the 1997 Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) this report develops a series of models for estimating the production and attraction of 41 different SCTG commodity groups for 145 geographic units in the United States; 92 of these are the counties of Indiana. This is followed by the calibration of fully-constrained gravity models for the flow of these commodities. Using modal share data from the CFS the generated traffic is divided between the various modes. This project looked primarily at the highway sector and used digital representations of these networks for traffic assignment purposes. A very detailed Indiana …

required to diagnose the failure, i.e., to identify the source of the failure. Diagnosis is challenging because fast error propagation may occur in high throughput distributed applications. The diagnosis often needs to be probabilistic in nature due to imperfect observability of the payload system, inability to do white-box testing, constraints on the amount of state that can be maintained at the diagnostic process, and imperfect tests used to verify the system. In this paper, we extend an existing Monitor architecture, for probabilistic diagnosis of failures in large-scale network protocols. The Monitor only observes the message exchanges between the protocol entities …

Towards An Integrated Land Use Data Base For Assessing The Potential For Greenhouse Gas Mitigation, Huey-Lin Lee, Thomas Hertel, Brent Sohngen, Navin Ramankutty

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This paper describes the GTAP Land Use Data Base designed to support integrated assessments of the potential for greenhouse gas mitigation. It disaggregates land use by agro-ecological zone (AEZ). To do so, it draws upon global land cover data bases, as well as state-of-the-art definition of AEZs from the FAO and IIASA. Agro-ecological zoning segments a parcel of land into smaller units according to agro-ecological characteristics, including: precipitation, temperature, soil type, terrain conditions, etc. Each zone has a similar combination of constraints and potential for land use. In the GTAP-AEZ Data Base, there are 18 AEZs, covering six different lengths …

“New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett Dec 2005

“New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Jean Rhys’s novels present an intriguing case study for thinking about the status and meaning of fragmented text. With their polyvocal, nonlinear narration, often presented through interior monologues, novels such as Voyage in the Dark and Good Morning, Midnight exemplify modernist fragmentation while intimating a deeper sense of pain and loss than most accounts of such fragmentation acknowledge. In spite of the strong undertone of psychological damage it conveys, the fragmentary nature of Rhys’s writing is sometimes celebrated by critics as evidence of a subversive stance, either in Rhys or in her characters. Such a response is not peculiar to …

Mental Models Of Communication And Television Advertising, Detlev Nothnagel, Gilda Vera Aguirre Dec 2005

Mental Models Of Communication And Television Advertising, Detlev Nothnagel, Gilda Vera Aguirre

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their paper, "Mental Models of Communication and Television Advertising," Detlev Nothnagel and Gilda Vera Aguirre discuss the question whether and if so, how and to what extent television advertisement spots differ cross-culturally. In contrast to the majority of studies on this topic, Nothnagel and Aguirre concentrate on a protocol-based formal analysis that is statistically oriented. In a more general perspective, the relation between face-to-face communication and communication mediated by technology is scrutinized. Provided that there are important differences, one hypothesis would be that they originate in habits of communication older than those found in technically-mediated communication. That would, at …

A New Look At Robert J. Flaherty's Documentary Art, Gerhard Lampe Dec 2005

A New Look At Robert J. Flaherty's Documentary Art, Gerhard Lampe

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "A New Look at Robert J. Flaherty's Documentary Art," Gerhard Lampe challenges the general view of documentary film director Robert J. Flaherty's work. In film studies, it is generally assumed that Flaherty ignored cinematographic developments and kept repeating himself by telling his stories of mythical battles of the individual against the powers of nature in always the same old-fashioned way. He is said to have improved his "photographic eye" with the help of improved lenses and more detailed shots; nevertheless, he did not show any interest in editing problems and sound recording. By comparing Flaherty's Nanook of …

Towards A Theory Of Emotional Communication, Anne Bartsch, Susanne Hübner Dec 2005

Towards A Theory Of Emotional Communication, Anne Bartsch, Susanne Hübner

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their paper, "Towards a Theory of Emotional Communication," Anne Bartsch and Susanne Hübner outline a model of emotional communication where emotional communication is conceptualized as a process of mutual influence between the emotions of communication partners. To elaborate this general notion further, four working definitions of emotional communication are introduced, each of which is based on a different theory of emotions. In the second part of the paper, an integrative framework is proposed that reconciles the four working definitions and their underlying theories of emotion. According to this framework, emotional communication comprises three interrelated levels of complexity: 1) innate …

Television And Politics In The Former East Germany, Claudia Dittmar Dec 2005

Television And Politics In The Former East Germany, Claudia Dittmar

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Television and Politics in the Former East Germany," Claudia Dittmar analyzes how in the former East Germany (GDR) while television audience was restricted severly by government, at the same time West German broadcasts acquired a substantial audience and what the impact of these broadcasts had on the audience. West German television programs enjoyed a high level of popularity with the East German population, thereby posing the greatest competition to the GDR's own television stations. As a result, GDR television was forced to counteract the impact of West German television. Dittmar discusses how the West German media were …

Aesthetics And Audiovisual Metaphors In Media Perception, Kathrin Fahlenbrach Dec 2005

Aesthetics And Audiovisual Metaphors In Media Perception, Kathrin Fahlenbrach

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Aesthetics and Audiovisual Metaphors in Media Perception," Kathrin Fahlenbrach presents a model of audiovisual analysis where focus is on audiovisual aesthetics perceived physically and affectively. Fahlenbrach starts out from the assumption that image and sound are inseparable in audiovisual media and must be treated as a unit, a "synchresis" (Chion). Fahlenbrach proposes that only this premise is able to cover the pre-consciously perceived elements sufficiently, namely the sensorial and affective structures of audiovisual aesthetics. Fahlenbrach articulates some aspects for an audiovisual aesthetics that concentrate on the interfaces between audiovisual perception and audiovisual design and employs to this …

The Canonization Of German-Language Digital Literature, Florian Hartling Dec 2005

The Canonization Of German-Language Digital Literature, Florian Hartling

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "The Canonization of German-language Digital Literature," Florian Hartling discusses "Net Literature," a relatively young phenomenon, that has its roots in experimental visual and concrete poetry and hypertext. With the use of new media technology, this new genre of literature has acquired much interest and is now considered to be one of the most important influences in contemporary art. Not only does Net Literature connect sound, video, and animation with interactivity and allows new forms of artistic expression, it also impacts significantly on the traditional functions of the literary system. Hartling suggests that, in relation to Net Literature, …

An Analysis Of Websites Of Bi-National Heterosexual Couples, Sadashivam Rao Dec 2005

An Analysis Of Websites Of Bi-National Heterosexual Couples, Sadashivam Rao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "An Analysis of Websites of Bi-national Heterosexual Couples," Sadashivam Rao discusses the design of world wide web homepages of bi-national couples. Rao shows how such websites become locations of the re-invention of notions of culture, generating a particular practice of representation, namely that of "hyphenating." Rao contends that the subjects of personal homepages enter the domain of the internet as entities already embedded in many other domains of discourse such as those of nationalism, culture, and media. Further, Rao proposes that this specific genre of websites reflects traces of these discourses. Of course, in the process of …

Imre Kertész's Nobel Prize, Public Discourse, And The Media, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek, in his paper, "Imre Kertész's Nobel Prize, Public Discourse, and the Media," discusses aspects of media coverage in German-, Hungarian-, and English-language newspapers and magazines of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded to Imre Kertész. The perspective of Tötösy's analysis is to gauge the importance and impact of media coverage comparatively in the three cultural and media landscapes. Based on selected examples from newspapers and magazines with an international scope, Tötösy argues that the reception of Kertész's Nobel Prize suggests the convergence of the media (as the message) and the contents of the message within …

Media Icons Of War And The Instrumentalisation Of Images In Us-American Media Today, Reinhold Viehoff Dec 2005

Media Icons Of War And The Instrumentalisation Of Images In Us-American Media Today, Reinhold Viehoff

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Media Icons of War and the Instrumenalisation of Images in US-American Media Today," Reinhold Viehoff argues that the destruction of Saddam Hussein's statue in Baghdad in April 2004 by the US army represents an attempt to instrumentalise the logic of mass media as a strategy of public diplomacy. Viehoff explains the logic of mass media and public diplomacy of the US government and US media today in the context of the history of the destruction of monuments as played out on the landscape of media during and following the demise of the Soviet empire. Viehoff proposes that …

Automated Adaptive Intrusion Containment In Systems Of Interacting Services, Yu-Sung Wu, Bingrui Foo, Yu-Chun Mao, Saurabh Bagchi, Eugene H. Spafford Nov 2005

Automated Adaptive Intrusion Containment In Systems Of Interacting Services, Yu-Sung Wu, Bingrui Foo, Yu-Chun Mao, Saurabh Bagchi, Eugene H. Spafford

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Large scale distributed systems typically have interactions among different services that create an avenue for propagation of a failure from one service to another. The failures being considered may be the result of natural failures or malicious activity, collectively called disruptions. To make these systems tolerant to failures it is necessary to contain the spread of the occurrence automatically once it is detected. The objective is to allow certain parts of the system to continue to provide partial functionality in the system in the face of failures. Real world situations impose several constraints on the design of such a disruption …

Automated Monitor Based Diagnosis In Distributed Systems, Gunjan Khanna, Mike Yu Cheng, Padma Varadharajan, Saurabh Bagchi, Miguel P. Correia, Paulo J. Veríssimo

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In today's world where distributed systems form many of our critical infrastructures, dependability outages are becoming increasingly common. In many situations, it is necessary to not just detect a failure, but also to diagnose the failure, i.e., to identify the source of the failure. Diagnosis is challenging since high throughput applications with frequent interactions between the different components allow fast error propagation. It is desirable to consider applications as black-boxes for the diagnosis process. In this paper, we propose a Monitor architecture for diagnosing failures in large-scale network protocols. The Monitor only observes the message exchanges between the protocol entities …

Science And Technology Libraries Partnering With Knovel, Jay W. Bhatt, W. Charles Paulsen, Lisa G. Dunn, Amy S. Van Epps

Libraries Research Publications

The engineering library plays a critical role in initiating and maintaining the conduit between vendors of engineering information and the users of that information—faculty, students, and researchers. Likewise, vendors play a key role in supporting library and faculty efforts to promote engineering information resources, beyond just supplying content and interface. Engineering libraries and vendors can effectively work together to get the most from electronic engineering resources for both large and small institutions. The case studies here show how Knovel Corporation, a sci-tech e-book vendor, has worked with engineering librarians at large and small institutions and with faculty members to promote …

Maintaining Privacy During Psychosocial Research On The International Space Station, Jennifer Boyd Ritsher, Nick Kanas, Stephanie Saylor

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Conducting psychosocial research on the International Space Station (ISS) requires rigorous privacy precautions that exceed standard scientific human subject protocols. In our previous study involving crewmembers on Mir, and in our ongoing ISS work, special precautions were taken during each phase of the missions. Pre-flight, participants received detailed consent forms explaining that only group-level data would be presented, and they chose ID codes known only to them. In-flight, special procedures protected data during collection and transmission. Post-flight, our analytic strategy further masked participants’ identities, and participant representatives were invited to review manuscript drafts prior to publication. In this paper we …

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos Oct 2005

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

An intrathoracic pressure regulator (ITPR) is a device that can be added to the external end of an endotracheal tube to create controlled negative airway pressure between positive pressure ventilations. The resulting downward bias of the airway pressure baseline promotes increased venous return and enhanced circulation during CPR and also during hypovolemic shock. In the present study we exercised a mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system, including airways, lungs, a 4 chambered heart, great vessels, peripheral vascular beds, and the biomechanics of chest compression and recoil, to determine the relationship between systemic perfusion pressure during CPR and the value …

Dynamic Modeling Of Crew Performance For Long-Duration Space Missions, Sara Goudarzi, A. J. Both, Jim Cavazzoni, Alexander Kusnecov

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Crew time is one of the most valuable and limited resources during long-duration space missions. Crew time requirements fluctuate depending on variations in crew performance. The limited number of crewmembers, resources, and the myriad of tasks to be performed leave a tight schedule for crewmembers during long-duration space missions. This schedule needs to account for potential interventions (stress events) that may alter predicted performance and thus scheduling. A dynamic crew model using a stochastic Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model of interrupted time series was developed to account for the effects of potential stress events on crew performance. This …

Psychological And Psychophysiological Effects Of A High-Mountain Expedition To Tibet, Marcus Stück, Hans-Ullrich Balzer, Karl Hecht, Harry Schröder Oct 2005

Psychological And Psychophysiological Effects Of A High-Mountain Expedition To Tibet, Marcus Stück, Hans-Ullrich Balzer, Karl Hecht, Harry Schröder

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In March 1999 a team of 8 mountaineers (6 men and 2 women) climbed up the 6th highest mountain of the world: The Cho Oyo (8201 m), located in the high mountains of Tibet. During the expedition, we investigated the effects of high mountaineering on various psychological variables (e.g., anxiety) and psychophysiological variables (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, skin-resistance) as well as the ability to relax at different points of time (2 premeasures before, three measures during, and one post-measure immediate after the Expedition). Due to a long-term monitoring of the skin resistance, we can summarize that three different adaptation levels …
