Preparing Teachers To Use Problem-Centered, Inquiry-Based Science: Lessons From A Four-Year Professional Development Project, James D. Lehman, Melissa George, Peggy Buchanan, Michael Rush May 2006

Preparing Teachers To Use Problem-Centered, Inquiry-Based Science: Lessons From A Four-Year Professional Development Project, James D. Lehman, Melissa George, Peggy Buchanan, Michael Rush

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Calls for reform in science education stress the need for inquiry-based, integrative methods that provide students with opportunities to solve authentic problems. Project INSITE, a four-year professional development effort in Indiana, was designed to help teachers integrate problem-centered science methods in their classrooms. This approach was characterized by use of a meaningful driving question anchored in a real-world context; student-conducted investigations that resulted in the creation of products; collaboration among students, teachers, and the community; and use of technology as a tool for gathering and sharing information. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the project suggest that it was generally successful …

The 3c3r Model: A Conceptual Framework For Designing Problems In Pbl, Woei Hung May 2006

The 3c3r Model: A Conceptual Framework For Designing Problems In Pbl, Woei Hung

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Well-designed problems are crucial for the success of problem-based learning (PBL). Previous discussions about designing problems for PBL have been rather general and inadequate in guiding educators and practitioners to design effective PBL problems. This paper introduces the 3C3R PBL problem design model as a conceptual framework for systematically designing optimal PBL problems. The 3C3R model comprises two classes of components: core components and processing components. Core components—including content, context, and connection—support content and conceptual learning, while processing components—consisting of researching, reasoning, and reflecting—concern students’ cognitive processes and problem-solving skills. This paper discusses the model in terms of its theoretical …

Jumping The Pbl Implementation Hurdle: Supporting The Efforts Of K–12 Teachers, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons May 2006

Jumping The Pbl Implementation Hurdle: Supporting The Efforts Of K–12 Teachers, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

While problem-based learning (PBL) has a relatively long history of successful use in medical and pre-professional schools, it has yet to be widely adopted by K–12 teachers. This may be due, in part, to the numerous challenges teachers experience when implementing PBL. In this paper, we describe specific hurdles that teachers are likely to encounter during the implementation process and provide specific suggestions for supporting teachers’ classroom efforts. Implementation challenges relate to 1) creating a culture of collaboration and interdependence, 2) adjusting to changing roles, and 3) scaffolding student learning and performance. By supporting teachers’ initial and ongoing efforts, we …

Overview Of Problem-Based Learning: Definitions And Distinctions, John R. Savery May 2006

Overview Of Problem-Based Learning: Definitions And Distinctions, John R. Savery

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that has been used successfully for over 30 years and continues to gain acceptance in multiple disciplines. It is an instructional (and curricular) learner-centered approach that empowers learners to conduct research, integrate theory and practice, and apply knowledge and skills to develop a viable solution to a defined problem. This overview presents a brief history, followed by a discussion of the similarities and differences between PBL and other experiential approaches to teaching, and identifies some of the challenges that lie ahead for PBL.

Involving University Library Staff In Ongoing Research, Adriaan Swanepoel May 2006

Involving University Library Staff In Ongoing Research, Adriaan Swanepoel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

To embed university library practitioners in research, this paper proposes a strategy of maximum immersion. The strategy involves the inclusion of as many employees from as many sections or departments in the library as is practically feasible in research projects of an ongoing or repetitive nature. The paper argues that this strategy will overcome most of the obstacles that normally hinder research by library practitioners, including a lack of research experience and a lack of time. To succeed, the strategy should comply with a number of conditions, such as that the research has to be relevant and beneficial to the …

A Pro-Active University Library In The Brazilian Context., Carmelita Do Espírito Santo, Maria De Fátima Pereira Raposo

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This work aims to present some procedures that characterize a pro-active posture in Brazilian university libraries. For this purpose, aspects of the concept of pro-active libraries are presented in a context where growth in the number of needy students entering private higher education demands ever more use and application of information technology (IT) for their learning processes. However, it has been observed that most of these students have difficulty in using and applying this technology, not only in their academic lives but also in their professional lives. In our approach to Brazilian private sector university libraries, it was seen that …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Library support for research in a university context An increased focus on research within Australian universities, driven by the federal government’s research agenda, has heightened interest in the services and resources provided by academic libraries to enhance research within higher education institutions. While academic libraries have always had as part of their mission support for research within the university, what constitutes this support has changed over time. This paper looks at library support for research in the university environment over the past 10-15 years. In evaluating the changing functions of this support for research, examples from Australian university library websites …

Context, Identity And Linguistic Hybridity Among Turkish - German Bilinguals, Daniel J. Scanlon May 2006

Context, Identity And Linguistic Hybridity Among Turkish - German Bilinguals, Daniel J. Scanlon

Open Access Theses

The purpose of the current study is to provide a more detailed account of the manifestation of identities via language. I look specifically at the most recent generation of Turkish-German bilinguals living in Germany. There are many linguistic characteristics ascribable to this generation of speakers, as has been the case with preceding generations. Three types of code-switching are described; intersentential, intrasentential and what I have called the hybrid code-switch. The latter hybrid codeswitch is observed as a more recent phenomenon, thus I designate it as characteristic of the most recent generation of Turkish-Gem1an bilinguals. This hybrid is composed of one …

Distributed Hashing For Scalable Multicast In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha, Y. Charlie Hu May 2006

Distributed Hashing For Scalable Multicast In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha, Y. Charlie Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Several multicast protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have been proposed that build multicast trees using location information available from GPS or localization algorithms and use geographic forwarding to forward packets down the multicast trees. These stateless multicast protocols carry encoded membership, location and tree information in each packet. Stateless protocols are more efficient and robust than stateful protocols (ADMR, ODMRP) as they avoid the difficulty of maintaining distributed states in the presence of frequent topology changes in MANETs. However, stateless locationbased multicast protocols are not scalable to large groups because they encode group membership in the header of …

Detection, Diagnosis, And Isolation Of Control And Data Attacks In Sensor Networks, Issa Khalil, Saurabh Bagchi, Cristina Nita-Rotaru, Ness Shroff Apr 2006

Detection, Diagnosis, And Isolation Of Control And Data Attacks In Sensor Networks, Issa Khalil, Saurabh Bagchi, Cristina Nita-Rotaru, Ness Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Sensor networks enable a wide range of applications in both military and civilian domains. However, the deployment scenarios, the functionality requirements, and the limited capabilities of these networks expose them to a wide-range of attacks against control traffic (such as wormholes, rushing, Sybil attacks, etc) and data traffic (such as selective forwarding). In this paper we propose a framework called DICAS that mitigates such attacks by detecting, diagnosing, and isolating the malicious nodes. DICAS uses as a fundamental building block the ability of a node to oversee its neighboring nodes’ communication. On top of DICAS, we build a secure routing …

The Importance Of Place: Using Local-Focus Videos To Spark The Sociological Imagination, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Apr 2006

The Importance Of Place: Using Local-Focus Videos To Spark The Sociological Imagination, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

Sociologists have documented how important place is in people’s lives. For example, certain places are associated with various emotions, such as triumph, sadness, fear, and contentment (Gieryn 2000). We also know that as people live in a place for more time, they become more attached to it (e.g., Herting et al 1997). Other scholars have shown that the bonds people create between themselves and certain geographic places reframe how certain sites are understood both by those involved and by outsiders (Gupta and Ferguson 1997). These geographic-human bonds shape how people identify themselves and others, and how they understand the issues …

Modernism, Joyce, And Portuguese Literature, Carlos Ceia Mar 2006

Modernism, Joyce, And Portuguese Literature, Carlos Ceia

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Carlos Ceia, in his article, "Modernism, Joyce, and Portuguese Literature," discusses parallels between James Joyce's work and texts by modernist and contemporary Portuguese novelists such as Antunes, Brandão, Negreiros, Pessoa, Saramago, Sá-Carneiro, Silva Ramos, and Velho da Costa. In his analysis, Ceia focuses on the role of myth, the notion of the (anti-)hero, the solipsism of interior consciousness, narrative techniques, and linguistic experimentation. Ceia argues that while it is impossible to detect direct influence by Joyce on Portuguese writers, it is in the context of the parallel paradigms of modernism we are able to discover the Joycean impact on both …
