The Effect Of A Problem-Centered, Enculturating Experience On Doctoral Students’ Self-Efficacy, Joanna C. Dunlap Nov 2006

The Effect Of A Problem-Centered, Enculturating Experience On Doctoral Students’ Self-Efficacy, Joanna C. Dunlap

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Preparing students to be effective leaders in their organizational and professional settings is a common goal of leadership preparation programs. However, students often lack confidence to share their knowledge and expertise in public forums. This study addressed whether the use of the rich environments for active learning (REAL) instructional model increased students’ self-efficacy regarding contributing to the professional community of practice through scholarship (i.e., research and study) and publication. Twelve doctoral students preparing to be educational leaders published an online journal. This study demonstrated how engaging students in problem-centered, enculturating activities that reflected the true nature of educational leadership and …

Perceptions Of The Value Of Problem-Based Learning Among Students With Special Needs And Their Teachers, Brian R. Belland, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons Nov 2006

Perceptions Of The Value Of Problem-Based Learning Among Students With Special Needs And Their Teachers, Brian R. Belland, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

While problem-based learning (PBL) has been found to be effective with gifted and average students (Hmelo-Silver, 2004), little is known about its impact on students with special needs. This study examines the perceptions of middle-school students with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities and of their teachers regarding the value of participating in a PBL unit. The unit focused on the physical accessibility of a low-SES, rural community where the students’ school was located. We used the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) to analyze interview data, and used observation data and artifacts to triangulate interview comments. Among the noteworthy findings …

Effects Of Bias Stress On Zno Nanowire Field-Effect Transistors Fabricated With Organic Gate Nanodielectrics, Sanghyun Ju, David B. Janes, Gang Lu, Antonio Facchetti, Tobin J. Marks Nov 2006

Effects Of Bias Stress On Zno Nanowire Field-Effect Transistors Fabricated With Organic Gate Nanodielectrics, Sanghyun Ju, David B. Janes, Gang Lu, Antonio Facchetti, Tobin J. Marks

Birck and NCN Publications

The effects of bias stress gate stress or drain stress on nanowire field-effect transistor NW-FET stability were investigated as a function of stress bias and stress time. The n-channel NW-FETs used a nanoscopic self-assembled organic gate insulator, and each device contained a single ZnO nanowire. Before stress, the off current is limited by a leakage current in the 1 nA range, which increases as the gate to source bias becomes increasingly negative. The devices also exhibited significant changes in threshold voltage Vth and off current over 500 repeated measurement sweeps. The leakage current was significantly reduced after gate stress, but …

Perceived Motion Sickness And Effects On Shooting Performance Following Combat Vehicle Transportation, Joakim Dahlman, Torbjörn Falkmer, Staffan Nählinder Nov 2006

Perceived Motion Sickness And Effects On Shooting Performance Following Combat Vehicle Transportation, Joakim Dahlman, Torbjörn Falkmer, Staffan Nählinder

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

This study used a quasi-experimental, repeated measures design to study the relationship between targeting performance and perceived motion sickness following exposure to motion in a land-based transportation setting. The targeting performances of 22 basic training conscript soldiers were examined after repeatedly being transported in the vehicle. Soldiers also rated their perceived motion sickness according to subjective scales before and after the two exposures to transportation. Results showed that perceived motion sickness was correlated to perceived decrease in targeting performance, due to factors labelled as “Combined subjective symptoms”. The study supports the idea that motion sickness and its effect on performance …

Slam: Sleep-Wake Aware Local Monitoring In Sensor Networks, Issa Khalil, Saurabh Bagchi, Ness B. Shroff Nov 2006

Slam: Sleep-Wake Aware Local Monitoring In Sensor Networks, Issa Khalil, Saurabh Bagchi, Ness B. Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Sleep-wake protocols are critical in sensor networks to ensure long-lived operation. However, an open problem is how to develop efficient mechanisms that can be incorporated with sleep-wake protocols to ensure both longlived operation and a high degree of security. Our contribution in this paper is to address this problem by using local monitoring, a powerful technique for detecting and mitigating control/data attacks in sensor networks. In local monitoring, a node oversee part of the traffic going in and out of its neighbors to determine if the behavior is suspicious, such as, delay in forwarding a packet. However, a direct application …

Distributional Effects Of Wto Agricultural Reforms In Rich And Poor Countries, Thomas Hertel, Roman Keeney, Maros Ivanic, Alan Winters Sep 2006

Distributional Effects Of Wto Agricultural Reforms In Rich And Poor Countries, Thomas Hertel, Roman Keeney, Maros Ivanic, Alan Winters

GTAP Working Papers Archive

Rich countries’ agricultural trade policies are the battleground on which the future of the WTO’s troubled Doha Round will be determined. Subject to widespread criticism, they nonetheless appear to be almost immune to serious reform, and one of their most common defenses is that they protect poor farmers. Our findings reject this claim. The analysis conducted here uses detailed data on farm incomes to show that major commodity programs are highly regressive in the USA, and that the only serious losses under trade reform are among large, wealthy, farmers in a few heavily protected subsectors. In contrast, analysis using household …

Hub-Based Simulation And Graphics Hardware Accelerated Visualization For Nanotechnology Applications, Wei Qiao, Michael Mclennan, Rick Kennell, David S. Ebert, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The Network for Computational Nanotechnology (NCN) has developed a science gateway at nanoHUB.org for nanotechnology education and research. Remote users can browse through online seminars and courses, and launch sophisticated nanotechnology simulation tools, all within their web browser. Simulations are supported by a middleware that can route complex jobs to grid supercomputing resources. But what is truly unique about the middleware is the way that it uses hardware accelerated graphics to support both problem setup and result visualization. This paper describes the design and integration of a remote visualization framework into the nanoHUB for interactive visual analytics of nanotechnology simulations. …

A Survey Of Bosnian, Croatian, And Serbian Poetry In English Translation In The U.S. And Canada, Snezana Zabic, Paula Kamenish Sep 2006

A Survey Of Bosnian, Croatian, And Serbian Poetry In English Translation In The U.S. And Canada, Snezana Zabic, Paula Kamenish

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their paper "A Survey of Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian Poetry in English Translation in the U.S. and Canada," Snezana Zabic and Paula Kamenish present a survey of book-length collections and anthologies of Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian poetry in English translation published in the U.S. and in Canada. Zabic and Kamenish argue that it is necessary to determine which factors are advantegous for the survival of poetry originating in "minor" languages and transmitted to the United States and Canada. Zabic and Kamenish propose three elements that have ensured a marginal but persistent presence of South Slavic poetry in English in …

Gender Identities In The Contemporary Slovene Novel, Alojzija Zupan Sosic Sep 2006

Gender Identities In The Contemporary Slovene Novel, Alojzija Zupan Sosic

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Gender Identities in the Contemporary Slovene Novel," Alojzija Zupan Sosic argues that perspectives of sexual identity have become prominent topics. Based on her library and publication research, Zupan Sosic proposes that in the period of 1990–2005 the Slovene novel is illuminated by a development of the personal or intimate story. In this development, changes of sexual identity evolve through the binary system of the heterosexual matrix whereby issues of sexual minorities remain. Important innovation in the Slovene novel include aspects connected to an identity formation determined by sexual identity where perhaps the most significant innovation is found …

Derrida's Deconstruction And The Rhetoric Of Proper Genres In Leonardo And Lessing, Shun-Liang Chao Sep 2006

Derrida's Deconstruction And The Rhetoric Of Proper Genres In Leonardo And Lessing, Shun-Liang Chao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Derrida's Deconstruction and the Rhetoric of Proper Genres in Leonardo and Lessing," Shun-liang Chao draws on Derrida's discourse of logocentrism to illuminate the "exorbitant" threads of metaphysical thought in Leonardo's and Lessing's texts on the comparison of poetry and painting. Both Leonardo and Lessing seek to subordinate one of the two sister arts to the other by constructing, respectively, the first, fixed principle of the proper genre and by drawing rigid borders between what is proper and what is improper. Leonardo privileges painting over poetry owing to the power of visiblity; on the other hand, Lessing subordinates …

The Old Story Teller As A John The Baptist-Figure In Demille's Samson And Delilah, Anton Karl Kozlovic Sep 2006

The Old Story Teller As A John The Baptist-Figure In Demille's Samson And Delilah, Anton Karl Kozlovic

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "The Old Story Teller as a John the Baptist-figure in DeMille's Samson and Delilah," Anton Karl Kozlovic argues that DeMille is a pop culture professional, an unsung auteur, and the father of the US-American biblical epic whose production and direction of Samson and Delilah (1949) is a masterful exercise in sacred subtext construction. In the public's eyes, Samson is a saintly hero, but scripturally speaking, he is notoriously bad as the last of the twelve judges overseeing the downward spiral of Israel's religio-political disintegration. DeMille, as Hollywood’s leading cinematic lay preacher, enhanced deliberately the sanctity of his …

A Bakhtinian Perspective On Feminist Lesbian Crime Writing, Sarah Posman Sep 2006

A Bakhtinian Perspective On Feminist Lesbian Crime Writing, Sarah Posman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "A Bakhtinian Perspective on Feminist Lesbian Crime Writing," Sarah Posman discusses how the Bakhtinian concepts "ethos" and "chronotope" add to the discussion of feminist lesbian crime writing. She sets out from a Bakhtinian typology of action stories and situates recent crime writing as a curious mixture of mission stories and transformation stories. Focusing on the innovative potential of feminist lesbian crime writing, Posman explores how such stories tackle the iconically masculine and heterosexual conventions of the detective story and manage to balance tradition and subversion successfully. Posman infuses her analysis with issues central to feminism and queer …

Subverting Literary Allusions In Eliot And Özdamar, Walter Rankin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Subverting Literary Allusions in Eliot and Özdamar," Walter Rankin explores the opposing ways allusion can be used in the works of major and minority authors. While Eliot is a canonized author whose The Waste Land is characterized by allusions to Eastern and Western works supplemented with his own comprehensive endnotes, Özdamar is a Turkish-German author whose A Cleaning Woman's Career subjects Western literary and historical figures -- including Medea, Hamlet and Ophelia, Nathan the Wise, Julius Ceasar, an Hitler and Eva Braun -- to the interpretive powers of a Turkish cleaning woman working as a guest worker …

Mitigating The Gateway Bottleneck Via Transparent Cooperative Caching In Wireless Mesh Networks, Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha, Y. Charlie Hu Aug 2006

Mitigating The Gateway Bottleneck Via Transparent Cooperative Caching In Wireless Mesh Networks, Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha, Y. Charlie Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have been proposed to provide cheap, easily deployable and robust Internet access. The dominant Internet-bound traffic from clients causes a congestion bottleneck around the gateway, which can significantly limit the throughput of the WMN clients in accessing the Internet.

In this paper, we present MeshCache, a transparent caching system for WMNs that exploits the locality in client Internet-bound traffic to mitigate the bottleneck effect at the gateway, thereby improving client perceived performance. MeshCache leverages the fact that a WMN typically spans a small geographic

area and hence mesh routers are easily over-provisioned with CPU, memory, and …

Computerization Of Primary Care In The United States, James Anderson, E. Andrew Balas Jul 2006

Computerization Of Primary Care In The United States, James Anderson, E. Andrew Balas

RCHE Publications

The objective of this study was to assess the current level of information technology use by primary care ‎physicians in the U.S. Primary care physicians listed by the American Medical Association were contacted ‎by e-mail and asked to complete a Web-based questionnaire. A to¬tal of 2,145 physicians responded. ‎Overall, between 20% and 25% of primary care physicians reported using electronic medical records, e-‎prescribing, point-of-care decision support tools, and electronic communication with patients. This ‎indicates a slow rate of adoption since 2000. Differences in adoption rates suggest that future surveys need ‎to differentiate primary care and office-based physicians by specialty. An …

Low Frequency Variability In Globally Integrated Tropical Cyclone Power Dissipation, Ryan Sriver, Matthew Huber Jun 2006

Low Frequency Variability In Globally Integrated Tropical Cyclone Power Dissipation, Ryan Sriver, Matthew Huber

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Surface wind and temperature records from the European Centre for Medium- Range Weather Forecasts 40 Year Reanalysis (ERA-40) Project are used to estimate low-frequency variations in globally integrated tropical cyclone (TC) intensity from 1958 to 2001. For the first time, the annually integrated power dissipation (PD) is explicitly calculated on a global scale, and results show an upward trend in PD during much of the ERA-40 project period, although we argue this is at least partially due to limitations in cyclone representation in ERA-40. Comparing our estimated trend in PD with Emanuel's (2005) approximation to PD reveals good agreement after …

John Dewey’S Philosophy Of Education Is Alive And Well, Rebecca L. Carver, Richard P. Enfield Jun 2006

John Dewey’S Philosophy Of Education Is Alive And Well, Rebecca L. Carver, Richard P. Enfield

Education and Culture

Offering an introduction to both John Dewey’s philosophy of education and the 4-H Youth Development Program, this paper draws clear connections between these two topics. Concepts explored include Dewey’s principles of continuity and interaction, and contagion with respect to learning. Roles of educational leaders (including teachers) are investigated in the context of a discussion about the structuring of opportunities for students to develop habits of meaningful and life-long learning. Specific examples are described in depth to demonstrate, from a Deweyan perspective, the educational process and value of 4-H participation. Brief comments are made about the place of 4-H in the …

The Demanding Community: Politicization Of The Individual After Dewey, Matthew C. Flamm Jun 2006

The Demanding Community: Politicization Of The Individual After Dewey, Matthew C. Flamm

Education and Culture

This article argues that conceptions of community after Dewey despair of an institutional means of recovering individuality, which is the central problem of democracy. They so despair, I contend, because of their politicized view of the individual. I first briefly consider the contrast between Dewey and contemporary proceduralists and civic republicans, before turning to my central discussion: C. Wright Mills, whose critique indicates a historical watershed for Dewey’s view of community. Ultimately, despair of a Deweyan sense of community issues in a contemporary stalemate between what I identify as the political “activist” and “apathist.”

How John Dewey’S Theories Underpin Art And Art Education, Patricia Goldblatt Jun 2006

How John Dewey’S Theories Underpin Art And Art Education, Patricia Goldblatt

Education and Culture

John Dewey believed every person is capable of being an artist, living an artful life of social interaction that benefits and thereby beautifies the world. In Art as Experience, Dewey reminds his readers that the second Council of Nicea censored the church’s use of statutes and incense that distracted from prayer. Dewey, in an interesting turnabout, removes dogma from the church, but lauds the sensory details that enable higher understanding of human experience. Dewey evokes a paradox: the appreciation and need for the “experiential” artifact, but art as catalyst to realms beyond the physical. For Dewey, art functions as experience. …
