Us 33 Over Blue River: Abc’S With Steel, Brandon Arnold, Kurt Heidenreich, Stephanie Wagner

Purdue Road School

The US 33 over the Blue River Bridge Replacement project is the first INDOT project of its kind, and a great example of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). The project used prefabricated steel beam modular super- structure units with prefabricated substructure units, approach slabs, terminal joints, and “steel-like” UHPC for the 8-inch closure pours. Correcting the substan- dard roadway superelevation added complexity to the design and detailing. Join us to learn more.

Charleston Library Conference

This year’s sponsored, no holds barred health sciences lively lunchtime gathering was open to all. It began with greetings from luncheon sponsor, Rittenhouse. The moderator, Rena Lubker, introduced the session and provided introductory remarks about this year’s three presentations: a commentary on issues that keep us up at night; a report on considerations to make when leaving big deal licenses and entering into new, OA friendly arrangements; and more discussion about the impact of expansions on libraries of academic medical affiliation. All three topics provided fodder for lively discussion at the end.

Ramune Kubilius provided her brief annual update …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between three lifestyle diets (ketogenic, vegan, and paleo) and dental biofilm formation in vitro. This study was set up in glass test tubes containing hydroxyapatite discs, an artificial saliva and 5 percent natural saliva combination, Streptococcus mutans, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Food items from three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) were selected for each diet, blended to form a consistent mixture, and added to 25 percent final volume in the test tubes. Biofilms were grown for 48, 60, and 72 hours. Biofilm density was measured quantitatively using a crystal violet assay. …

What’S Past Is . . . Still Messing With Our Workflows, Jacqueline Whyte Appleby Sep 2018

What’S Past Is . . . Still Messing With Our Workflows, Jacqueline Whyte Appleby

Charleston Library Conference

Scholars Portal has been aggregating locally loaded e-books for Ontario universities on an ebrary-backed platform since 2009—eons ago in the world of library technology! Over the last year, Scholars Portal Books has received a rewrite from the ground up, and this time the focus is on building a platform that anticipates the future of e-book access and usage. No surprise that there have been many challenges along the way, and most of them are unique to consortia: How do we handle corrections to old PDFs? What do we do with six ISBNs? More broadly, how do we support local scholarship …

Developing Strategies For Anatomical Characterization Of Locus Coeruleus - Cortical Projections, Kendra Wang, Qiuyu Wu, Alexander A. Chubykin Aug 2016

Developing Strategies For Anatomical Characterization Of Locus Coeruleus - Cortical Projections, Kendra Wang, Qiuyu Wu, Alexander A. Chubykin

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The locus coeruleus (LC) is a small noradrenergic nucleus located in the midbrain that releases the neurotransmitter norepinephrine to diverse brain regions. Through release of norepinephrine, the LC plays a central role in modulating numerous physiological functions including attention, arousal, and mood and behavior. Although the LC projects to many brain region, there is limited information about the organization and the afferent projections to the LC that modulates its activity. The goal of this study was to characterize the anatomical projections between LC and cortical areas using a variety of different experimental techniques, including survival brain surgery, stereotaxic injections of …

Wilde About Weeding: An Earnest Effort In Collection Development, Melissa Johnson

Charleston Library Conference

In an effort to create more student space, provide ease of access to resources, and strengthen their collection, a medium sized academic library at a recently consolidated university undertook a major weeding project in 2014. A weeding plan was developed for both the monographs and the serials. Since it was important to get immediate results in removing items from the collection, the print serials section was the first area selected for weeding. Through a step‐by‐step process that involved all members of the library staff, items were evaluated on electronic availability, availability at the other university libraries, the content, the condition, …

Bio-Inspired Composite Hydrogels For Osteochondral Regenerative Engineering, Grant N. Gellert, Liangju Kuang, Chunhui Jiang, Nur P. Damayanti, Joseph Irudayaraj, Meng Deng

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Treatment of osteochondral defects encompassing injury or degeneration to both the articular cartilage as well as the underlying subchondral bone presents a significant medical challenge. Current treatment options including autografts and allografts suffer from limited availability and risk of immunogenicity, respectively. The long term goal of this work is to develop an integrated scaffold system for treatment of osteochondral defects via in situ regeneration of bone, cartilage and the bone-cartilage interface. Hydrogels composed of polymer networks swollen in water provide an attractive biomaterial platform for regeneration of cartilage. In the present study, we have developed a novel composite hydrogel consisting …

Dialect Influence On California Chicano English, Laura Kompara Apr 2015

Dialect Influence On California Chicano English, Laura Kompara

Purdue Linguistic Association Symposium

Chicano English is a distinct U.S. English dialect common in California and the Southwestern United States. As Spanish immigrants from Mexico moved to the United States, especially throughout the 1990s, they learned English but carried some of the sounds and grammatical constructions from Spanish with them. Chicano English has become its own variety of English with organized linguistic patterns and must not be confused with English of second-language learners. This paper offers an accessible background piece to Chicano English in California and the ways that this dialect is changing due to contact with the surrounding dialects. The linguistic patterns of …

The Embedded Library: A Marriage Made In Heaven Or In Hell?, Glenda Myers, Trish Warner Apr 2013

The Embedded Library: A Marriage Made In Heaven Or In Hell?, Glenda Myers, Trish Warner

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This case study covers a number of areas in which a 90 year old medical library has been able to redefine purpose and services, and considers both the positive as well as the negative aspects of the embedded relationship.

According to the Shumaker assessment of readiness for embeddedness, the Witwatersrand Health Sciences Library (WHSL) and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand were more than ready to embrace a partnership by 2010. A survey indicated that a high proportion (93.5%) of academic staff felt that evidence-based information literacy (IL) should be included in the formal medical …

From Cornerstone To Capstone: Information Literacy Collaboration Across The Curriculum, Fiona Salisbury, Jenny Corbin, Tai Peseta

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Librarians and academics alike are passionate about how students engage with scholarly information. We want students to build on their existing information literacy skills when they commence university and to graduate with the information skills needed for lifelong learning in their chosen profession and society at large. Collaboration between librarians and academics to embed information literacy into curriculum design is a key strategy for developing students’ information skills. But what impact does our collaborative effort have on student learning outcomes and long-term information seeking behaviour? Are our graduates information literate and ready for a complex information society?

At Latrobe University …

Librarian Class Attendance: Blogs, Statistics, Outcomes And Opportunities., Dianne Cmor, Victoria Marshall

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

What, if any, are the benefits of having librarians attend lectures and seminars? In the midst of a start-up program, the librarians at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar were challenged to test new models of active participation while demonstrating positive outcomes. This paper describes the setting, methods, and outcomes associated with having librarians attend courses as active members in an evolving learning environment. Interactions with faculty and students will be analyzed to assess whether course attendance benefits professional relationships in a way that positively impacts student learning. In parallel, an examination of assessment measures for determining value of …
