Oikos And Polis In The Medea: Patterns Of The Heart And Mind, Debra Blankenship Jun 1992

Oikos And Polis In The Medea: Patterns Of The Heart And Mind, Debra Blankenship

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

In Euripides’s The Medea, the dichotomy of traditional values associated with oikos and polis serves as a means by which to comment on the issues of fifth century Athenian life. This paper shows how oikos the private domain) and polis (the public domain) come to be separate and conflicting concepts in the democracy of Athens. Euripides shaped The Medea around the idea of Medea throwing off the bonds of oikos as a result of her desire for revenge on Jason. Medea knowingly denies the bonds of oikos in order to assert her power. This paper finishes with a nod towards …

Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan Jun 1992

Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan

Dissertations and Theses

Elderly people with irreversible cognitive declines such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) make many demands on those who must care for them, whether those caregivers are family members or the paid staff of nursing homes. When family members no longer have the capacity to meet these demands, a move to a nursing home or other formal care facility becomes the only solution. Such a shift does not, however, mean the end of family caregiving. Instead, the family's caregiving activities must be integrated with the ongoing efforts of the formal care staff. Currently, relatively little is known about 1) what families experience …

The Development Of A Predictive Model Of Pretrial Misconduct, Donald R. Trapp May 1992

The Development Of A Predictive Model Of Pretrial Misconduct, Donald R. Trapp

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of jail overcrowding has forced corrections officials and jail administrators to examine ways in which to better manage available jail space. Pretrial release and detention policies have been a target of this examination as pretrial defendants typically account for 50% of a jail's population. Standards for pretrial release exist, but their administration varies by jurisdiction. The impact of jail overcrowding on pretrial release policies has been to decrease the time available to render a decision. Recent efforts to standardize pretrial release standards in Oregon have not addressed the issue of expediency. The current study examines pretrial misconduct (failure …

Simulation Design, Role Identification And Attitude Change In A High Technology Culture, Terry Robert Schumacher Jan 1992

Simulation Design, Role Identification And Attitude Change In A High Technology Culture, Terry Robert Schumacher

Dissertations and Theses

Gaming-simulations (G-S) are those in which participants play roles, make decisions and receive feedback while interacting with a simulation model. This study used attitude change to measure of G-S effectiveness in exploring questions relating simulation design and effectiveness. To define participant attitudes and the content for a simulation, the organizational culture of a software engineering firm was studied using an ethnographic approach. Inconsistencies between the existing culture and expressed ideals were measured using an 40 item attitude questionnaire drawn from statements made during interviews. Simulation structure and participant cognitive style were factors hypothesized to influence identification with a simulation role. …

Teacher Adjustments To Multiple And Continuous Change, Cheryll Brounstein Jan 1992

Teacher Adjustments To Multiple And Continuous Change, Cheryll Brounstein

Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the phenomenon of multiple and continuous change and the adjustments teachers made in response to the phenomenon. The research questions posed by this study are: 1. Is there a phenomenon of multiple and continuous change and if so how is it characterized by the participants? 2. Is there an effect of multiple and continuous change on the participants, if so, how do the participants adjust to the phenomenon and how can these adjustments be described? Methodologically, the strategy for this study was designed to allow for the generation of theory since multiple and continuous change has not …

People, Programs, And Politics: Two Case Studies Of Adult Literacy Classes, Rita Collins Jan 1992

People, Programs, And Politics: Two Case Studies Of Adult Literacy Classes, Rita Collins

Dissertations and Theses

Past research has not sufficiently addressed the question of what types of adult literacy instructional practice are recognized by participants, i.e., students and teachers, as facilitating learning in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. The purpose of this study was to describe instructional practices in two urban literacy programs serving low level adult readers, and to identify which practices were effective in meeting student needs. Effectiveness was measured by the ability of students to achieve learning objectives identified by themselves and the teacher, and included attendance patterns and student participation. Quantitative measures of achievement were not used as criteria since few …

Macintyre's Nietzsche: A Critique, R. Kevin Hill Jan 1992

Macintyre's Nietzsche: A Critique, R. Kevin Hill

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In Alastair MacIntyre's "After Virtue", Nietzsche is presented as (1)an emotivist, (2) the culmination of the liberal tradition, and (3) fundamentally opposed to Aristotle. All three claims are criticized, thus casting doubt not only on MacIntyre's interpretation of Nietzsche, but also on his larger account of the history of Western ethical theory and practice, as well as on his proposal that we return to the tradition which Nietzsche has called into question.

A Commentary On Assessment Training In Boulder And Vail Model Programs: In Praise Of Differences!, Richard H. Dana Jan 1992

A Commentary On Assessment Training In Boulder And Vail Model Programs: In Praise Of Differences!, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

This commentary on assessment training in scientist-practitioner and practitioner-scholar programs examined potential differences between these training models on assessment instruments included in the curriculum, assessment instructors, modes of interpretation, anticipated clients, and service delivery styles. Over time it appears that the potential for difference in assessment training inherent in Boulder and Vail model values has been minimized. If these models for training professional psychologists are to be effective in preparing students for assessment tasks with additional populations of consumers in new service delivery systems, attention to these potential differences in assessment training offers promise for more responsible and competent practice …

Multidimensionality Of Power Use In Organizations And Its Correlates, Weizhong Dong Jan 1992

Multidimensionality Of Power Use In Organizations And Its Correlates, Weizhong Dong

Dissertations and Theses

The present study was conducted to examine power use patterns and general power use strategies in organizations multidimensionally (i.e., downward, upward, and lateral directions of power use), to extend and explain previous findings by Kipnis et al. (1980), with reference to situational effects on multidimensional power use. The samples in this study consist of 230 full-time managers who were from eight local businesses, and a second sample of 140 college students who worked over 15 hours a week at the time of the study. Two exploratory factor analyses resulted in five commonly used power patterns and two general power use …

Opinions About Sex Offenders' Progress In Therapy, Laren Bays Jan 1992

Opinions About Sex Offenders' Progress In Therapy, Laren Bays

Dissertations and Theses

Sex offenders are often required by the court to enter therapy and receive help so they can stop deviant sexual behaviors. Mental health professionals must have some means of evaluating a mandated client's progress in therapy, however, there are currently no valid criteria available. A survey form was developed containing 73 items which professionals identified as having possible utility in evaluating progress.

Adult Student Perceptions Of Traditionally Sex-Typed Toys, Shelly Lynn Jackson Jan 1992

Adult Student Perceptions Of Traditionally Sex-Typed Toys, Shelly Lynn Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

studies have examined children's toy preferences as they relate to sex-role development. However, studies have failed to examine the dimensions of the toys themselves. Because adults purchase the majority of toys children receive, this study sought to determine adult student perceptions of children's traditionally sex-typed toys. Eighty-one participants rated ten selected toys. Multidimensional scaling analysis revealed five underlying dimensions. The five dimensions included Productive Play, Sociability, Structure, Gender, and Age. It was discovered that the Gender dimension was less salient than both the Productive Play and Sociability dimensions. The dimensions pertaining to each toy are discussed.

Environmental And Age Differences In The Formation Of Romantic Pairs And Self-Monitoring In Adolescents, Russell I. Oelheim Dec 1991

Environmental And Age Differences In The Formation Of Romantic Pairs And Self-Monitoring In Adolescents, Russell I. Oelheim

Dissertations and Theses

Mark Snyder (1974) in his Self-Monitoring (SM) construct proposed there were two ways in which people might be classified: high and low self-monitors. High SM individuals attend to environmental cues and respond to the expectations of a given situation, while low SM individuals respond to their feelings, inner states and personal values. This construct has been extensively researched with adults and children, but not with adolescents.

David Elkind (1979), in his Imaginary Audience (IA) construct, suggested that upon reaching puberty, teenagers become vitally aware of how they are perceived by others. Elkind maintained that girls in early adolescence were more …

An Examination Of The Long-Term Effects Of Authorized Training Programs On Injured Workers In The State Of Oregon, Grace Alice Han Jul 1991

An Examination Of The Long-Term Effects Of Authorized Training Programs On Injured Workers In The State Of Oregon, Grace Alice Han

Dissertations and Theses

The worth of rehabilitation programs should be measured in terms of their lasting impact on long-term employment. Vocational rehabilitation programs nationally and internationally appear to be falling short of their goal of long-term gainful employment. Competitive employment options for the injured worker appear to have leveled out, the pool of unemployed disabled workers appears to be rising, litigation and adversarial relationships are beginning to dominate the rehabilitation process, and costs of vocational rehabilitation are escalating. Increasingly, interest has focused on the long-term influence of vocational rehabilitation, particularly on the costly training programs, and on the employment and economic potential of …

An Information Theoretic Framework For Exploratory Multivariate Market Segmentation Research, Jamshid C. Hosseini, Robert R. Harmon, Martin Zwick Jul 1991

An Information Theoretic Framework For Exploratory Multivariate Market Segmentation Research, Jamshid C. Hosseini, Robert R. Harmon, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

State-of-the-art market segmentation often involves simultaneous consideration of multiple and overlapping variables. These variables are studied to assess their relationships, select a subset of variables which best represent the subgroups (segments) within a market, and determine the likelihood of membership of a given individual in a particular segment. Such information, obtained in the exploratory phase of a multivariate market segmentation study, leads to the construction of more parsimonious models. These models have less stringent data requirements while facilitating substantive evaluation to aid marketing managers in formulating more effective targeting and positioning strategies within different market segments. This paper utilizes the …
