The City, Lee Merriwether Clark May 1969

The City, Lee Merriwether Clark

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is composed of five oil paintings and four synthetic paintings. The works are arranged in a sequence beginning with distant over views of the city and progressing toward more immediate views. Techniques change also, from the suggestive impressionistic mode, a style I explored in my early years of art education, to a studied application of large, solid, simplified shapes of color. In my work, realism is sacrificed for a decorative arrangement of color patterns.

From this creative experience I have reached conclusions about art education and my responsibility as an art instructor. Motivation is essential when introducing all …

An Examination Of Disengagement Among Elderly People In A Low Income Public Housing Facility, Linda Bennion, Marion Paradis, Sheila Petrie

Dissertations and Theses

This project studied the consequences of disengagement among elderly people and examined the respondent's opinions about society's responsibility to the aged.

The study population was limited to 48 elderly people, equally divided between men and women, married and unmarried; residing in Northwest Tower, a high-rise public housing facility.

The possible consequences of disengagement which were studied included isolation, depression, frustration, despair, factors preventing satisfaction with present circumstances, desired activities in relation to available activities, and energy and desire relative to activity and responsibility. Finally, opinions were sought about society's responsibility to the elderly.

Six general hypotheses guided the development of …

Judging Development And Sexual Identity In Children's Art, Susan Lathrop Dietsche May 1969

Judging Development And Sexual Identity In Children's Art, Susan Lathrop Dietsche

Dissertations and Theses

This study identified selected characteristics of sexual identity and artistic development using 481 pictures from a collection of 1,008 pictures drawn by first through fourth grade males and females. The pictures were collected by the E. C. Brown Trust Foundation to study children's concepts of reproduction.

Three general hypotheses were developed: I. Sex differences are observable in children's art; II. There are observable differences in artistic development as grade level changes; III. Observations by social workers of content in children's art are reliable. From a search of the literature, certain variables were identified, including content, use of color, and aspects …

The Maroons And Freedom In Jamaica, Lennon Claude Henry May 1969

The Maroons And Freedom In Jamaica, Lennon Claude Henry

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this essay is to present a history of the Maroons from their earliest rebellions to their present role in contemporary Jamaican society. Also of importance will be the conditions under which the Maroons received freedom the British and to what extent these conditions continue to persist in an independent Jamaica. A secondary purpose is to provide material and information which may contribute significantly to the dearth of printed expertise in this area. When the British captured Jamaica from the Spaniards in 1655, they failed to subdue numerous Negro slaves who were no longer content to be slaves. …

Aspects Of The Åland Islands Question, Elen Christine Sakshaug May 1969

Aspects Of The Åland Islands Question, Elen Christine Sakshaug

Dissertations and Theses

The Åland Islands question in international politics has been intermittently discussed, negotiated, and settled since the eighteenth century. The Islands lie in the Baltic Sea, halfway between Sweden and Finland, at the mouth of the Gulf of Bothnia. They have been accorded importance by international dispute and finally by international treaty. In the present thesis the position of the Åland Islands in the Scandinavian region, from the time of settlement to the present, is considered. Major events and agreements are included to provide a background for the development of the dispute which arose over the Islands in the early twentieth …

A Method Of Measuring The Electron Energy Losses In Transmission Through Thin Films, John Patrick Stewart May 1969

A Method Of Measuring The Electron Energy Losses In Transmission Through Thin Films, John Patrick Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

The energy distribution in an electron beam transmitted by a thin aluminum film was studied by a retarding potential method in which the energy analysis could be made as a function of the polar angle and azimuth of scattering. The results indicated that the transmitted beam contained electrons which had lost essentially zero energy and groups of electrons which had suffered losses of approximately15 ev and 25 ev and possib1y 75 ev. In addition there appeared to be a continuous background of energy losses over the range studied (from 0 to 80 ev). The resolution of the energy analyser was …

The Complaint Process In Protective Services For Children, William L. Carey May 1969

The Complaint Process In Protective Services For Children, William L. Carey

Dissertations and Theses

This is a descriptive study of the community process by which a complaint is made to a protective service agency. It is by this process that deviant child care is first identified and the decision to take action is made. The study develops a typology of the complaint process and identifies seven elements as significant in complaints that reach community agencies. The elements were: the complaint situation, the precipitating events that brought the complaint situation to the attention of someone outside the nuclear family, the relationship between the complainant and family, the complainant's motivation for responding to the complaint situation, …

The View From The Future; The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy As An Element In Historical Causation, William Welker Lenon May 1969

The View From The Future; The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy As An Element In Historical Causation, William Welker Lenon

Dissertations and Theses

The behavioral sciences in conjunction with history provide a unique opportunity for a more creative, yet precise, approach to the role of man as an historical and social agent. On the one hand history provides an approach to man’s role based on the appeal to both facts and creative interpretation. On the other, the behavioral sciences can provide historians with a more precise concept of the mechanism of social, cultural, and personal role development and action. The creative conjunction of the behavioral sciences and history is called Neo-synthecism in order to more easily identify this approach. There are two purposes …

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner Apr 1969

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner

Dissertations and Theses

The rise of the middle class to power and influence in European culture and politics in the nineteenth century created the conditions of modern life which to many European intellectuals were distasteful and ominous. They viewed urbanization, commercialization, industrialization and the qualities of life that they engendered, such as anxiety, limitation of freedom, and pervasive mediocrity in cultural expression, as being inimical to the traditional and more reliable values of European civilization or, in some instances, as being incapable of providing the bases for a free and humane existence.

This study focuses on the attack on bourgeois society in Europe …

Selected Experiences Of Boys And Girls Entering The Community Of Ketchikan, Alaska From Correctional Schools, Marian L. Swain Apr 1969

Selected Experiences Of Boys And Girls Entering The Community Of Ketchikan, Alaska From Correctional Schools, Marian L. Swain

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore differences in self-reported experiences of fifteen boys and girls who were released from correctional schools from June 24, 1965, to May 16, 1967, into the community of Ketchikan, Alaska, from a control group of nineteen who had not been in correctional institutions, who were matched by sex, age and race. Between the dates of July 16, 1967, to September 13, 1967, I interviewed and administered a questionnaire to each respondent in both groups. The respondents, ranging in age from 14 years to 20 years, were seen in the welfare office, the person's …

Steady-State And Transient Currents In Organic Liquids By Injection From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver Apr 1969

Steady-State And Transient Currents In Organic Liquids By Injection From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental data are presented on the currents induced in organic liquids by injection from a tunnel cathode. The injection level was varied over a wide range resulting in almost no space‐charge limitation to almost complete space‐charge limitation. Results were different from that usually observed in solids, in that at low fields, the steady‐state current was proportional to V², while at high fields the current was proportional to V. By proper choice of electrode spacing and applied voltage, space‐charge‐limited current transients as low as 10⁻¹¹ A∕cm² and 5 sec transit times were observed. A smooth transition between the electrode‐limited and the …

Value Orientation In Relation To Emphasis In The Process Of Diagnosing The Family In State Of Crisis, Bradford Lynn Everson Apr 1969

Value Orientation In Relation To Emphasis In The Process Of Diagnosing The Family In State Of Crisis, Bradford Lynn Everson

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this project was to explore for the possible existence of value orientations as factors operative in the social work judgment process. The study first tested for differences in value orientation between social workers. The extent to which these value orientations dominate the pre-disposing attitudes of the social worker was to be determined for the case of diagnosis of families in crisis. Utilized as a test for value orientation were five constructs developed by Charles Morris. These constructs as characterized by their titles were: A. Social Restraint and Self-Control; B. Enjoyment in Action; C. Withdrawal and Self-Sufficiency; D. …

A Standardization Of The "Children's Speechreading Test" On Normal Children, Lorna Helen Newcombe

Dissertations and Theses

This study is limited standardization of the "Children's Speechreading Test" designed by Dr. Dolores S. Butt of the University of New Mexico. After studying the development of language skills in young acoustically handicapped children, she randomly selected subjects from 10 nursery schools and primary departments of schools for the deaf and administered her test to these children. The purpose of the present study is to provide a limited standardization of the "Children's speechreading Test" on normal hearing children. Although Dr. Butt indicates some relation of her test to intelligence, no attempt was made in this pilot study to correlate mental …

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson Oct 1968

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson

Dissertations and Theses

The preparation of allenes by the condensation of an acyl chloride with a phosphonium ylid and subsequent elimination of an acid salt and a phosphonium oxide has been established by Bestmann and Hartung. It was felt that this process could be expanded to include the synthesis of butatrienes. Butatrienes are stabilized by aromatic substituents while aromatic substituents decrease the nucleophilicity and reactivity of the phosphonium ylids to be used in the synthesis of the butatrienes. The ylids employed were carbomethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, and a new compound, carbethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, both of which failed to form alkylated condensation products. Both ylids were prepared …

New Computer Methods For Protein Crystallography, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

New Computer Methods for Protein Crystallography, by Martin Zwick. Submitted to the Department of Biology on 30 August 1968 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The section, "MYOGLOBIN REFINEMENT," describes the fitting of an idealized polypeptide chain to a set of approximate backbone coordinates for the protein, sperm whale myoglobin. This procedure refines the structure by imposing upon it known bond distances and angles, and simultaneously derives a representation of the polypeptide conformation in terms of the values of the rotation angles about its single bonds. The overall rms and mean deviation between …
