What's New Pussyhat? Men, Feminism, And Social Identity, Rachel Lee Crist Jun 2018

What's New Pussyhat? Men, Feminism, And Social Identity, Rachel Lee Crist

Dissertations and Theses

Current understandings of feminism do not seek to dissuade men from feminism as a movement; moreover, men's inclusion in the feminist movement is seen as paramount to achieving equality and dismantling all forms of hegemonic power. Past research has shown that identification with a social movement is a strong predictor for participation in social change, more so than belonging to a disadvantaged social category. Despite this, there is nascent literature on how men define, identify as, and practice feminism. This study draws from a thematic analysis of three focus groups of self-identified males to investigate their self-identification as feminist. Using …

Neoliberalism And Psychological Subdisciplines: A Reformulation Of Personhood Disseminated By Theories And Practices, Jeffrey Yoder Jun 2018

Neoliberalism And Psychological Subdisciplines: A Reformulation Of Personhood Disseminated By Theories And Practices, Jeffrey Yoder

University Honors Theses

The goal of this thesis was to examine how neoliberalism has impacted psychological practice. A literature review was conducted to identify intradisciplinary research published focusing on neoliberalism in relation to psychology. The identified literature emerged primarily among four subdisciplines of psychology including positive, developmental, educational, and social psychology. Two themes originated throughout the entirety of the subdisciplines research within the literature review: 1) how neoliberalism has interacted within the development of psychological subdisciplines or their psychological theories and practices 2) how the resulting impacts of these interactions are reformulating our personhood. It is concluded that psychologists within these four major …

Reconciling The Opportunities And Obstacles Of Motherhood Following Corrections Involvement, Summer Brooke Newell

Dissertations and Theses

This mixed methods dissertation is comprised of three papers that consider interrelated ways in which social bonds, within the context of parenting, are experienced by women recently involved with the corrections system. Types of social bonds considered include agency professionals, romantic partners, and children--all previously theorized to play a role during the reentry period. These social bonds are considered within the context of the challenges experienced during this period, and how and why these social bonds may--or may not--support women as they transition back into the community.

Latinas And Sexual Health: Correlates Of Sexual Satisfaction, Christine Marie Velez Jun 2018

Latinas And Sexual Health: Correlates Of Sexual Satisfaction, Christine Marie Velez

Dissertations and Theses

Latinas/os are one of the fastest growing and most heterogeneous minority ethnic groups in the US. One in 5 women in the US are Latina; by 2060, it is projected that Latinas will compose 1/3 of the female population. Latinas continue to experience disparities in sexual and reproductive health outcomes compared to non-Hispanic whites. While factors impacting undesirable consequences of sexual activity for Latinas have been well documented, Latinas' experiences with sexual satisfaction in the broader context of sexual health remains understudied, despite sexual satisfaction having been identified as an integral component of sexual health. A focus on positive sexual …

The Cycles Of Violence Against Native Women: An Analysis Of Colonialism, Historical Legislation And The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act Of 2013, Genevieve M. Le May

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Violence against Native American Women is an epidemic in the United States. According to the Department of Justice, Native women experience sexual violence more than any other ethnic group (Department of Justice, 2013). Research by Juana Majel-Dixon 1st Vice President of the National Congress of American Indians suggests that one out of three Native women will be raped in their lifetime, and six in ten will be physically assaulted (Majel-Dixon, 2012). More importantly, emerging research by Jana Walker, Senior Attorney and Director of the Indian Law Resource Center also reveals that the majority of their attackers are non-Natives and …

The Dispute Over The Commons: Seed And Food Sovereignty As Decommodification In Chiapas, Mexico, Carol Frances HernáNdez RodríGuez

Dissertations and Theses

Seeds have become one of the most contested resources in our society. Control over seeds has intensified under neoliberalism, and today four large multinational corporations control approximately 70 percent of the global seed market. In response to this concentration of corporate power, an international social movement has emerged around the concept of seed sovereignty, which reclaims seeds and biodiversity as commons and public goods. This study examines the relationship between the global dynamics of commodification and enclosure of seeds, and the seed sovereignty countermovement for decommodification. I approach this analysis through an ethnographic case study of one local seed sovereignty …

Exiters Of Religious Fundamentalism: Reconstruction Of Identity, Social Relationships And Support, And Meaning Related To Well-Being, Andreea Alexandra Nica Jun 2018

Exiters Of Religious Fundamentalism: Reconstruction Of Identity, Social Relationships And Support, And Meaning Related To Well-Being, Andreea Alexandra Nica

Dissertations and Theses

Over the past decade, researchers have documented the steady growth of religious "nones," those who do not affiliate with any organized religion. There is, however, limited research examining religious disaffiliation on health outcomes--that is, how the process of religious disaffiliation or exiting contributes to mental well-being. These trends and gap in the literature make it timely and it is important to consider the impact of leaving religion on the well-being of individuals experiencing this life transition. This qualitative study investigates a particularly understudied subgroup of exiters -- individuals who have exited Christian fundamentalist religious groups.

Drawing on 24 in-depth, individual …

Socioeconomic inequities were mentioned most; racial/ethnic inequities appeared minimally. Conclusions: Neither equity nor disparity featured prominently in this news debate over policy created to address children's nutritional inequities. When included, arguments focused on overcoming inequities' effects rather …

Agroecology In Argentina: Transitioning Farmers To Resilient Agriculture, Ashley D. Kunesh

University Honors Theses

In the context of the ecological crisis that our planet currently faces under the threat of climate change, agroecology is becoming a pertinent solution in the scientific community as a resilient approach to agricultural production. Despite vast evidence of the benefits it is not widely promoted by government and NGOs. This paper seeks to address the gap of knowledge in understanding how to help producers transition to agroecological practices with a case study in Argentina, a country with diverse eco-regions where industrial-agriculture is dominant. We identify key motivations and obstacles to adopt agroecological practices and assessed possible strategies for moving …

Controversy Advertising: An Exploratory Study On Controversy Advertising And Its Effects, Yun Kuan

University Honors Theses

This is an exploratory study on the effects controversial social issues in advertising has on consumers. As the current political climate becomes more and more charged, corporations are joining in on the conversation, producing advertising categorized as “controversy advertising”. However, controversy advertising hasn’t been deeply explored, and its effectiveness and goal is unclear. Data for this research is gathered through secondary and primary research, including a literature review, an interview, and a survey where respondents were asked to react to two controversy advertisements. Music And Ireland's National Identity: Connecting Folk Music And Cultural Theory Through Emotional Sociology, Alexandra Habecker May 2018

Music And Ireland's National Identity: Connecting Folk Music And Cultural Theory Through Emotional Sociology, Alexandra Habecker

University Honors Theses

Music has been a crucial component of every major social movement in history. Though studies have shown that music and other areas of the arts are a product of the surrounding world in response to their own historical context, I propose that music can and has directly impacted society through the effects of music on the human emotional response. By looking at cultural theory through a musicological lens and using Ireland's rich and rooted musical culture as an example, this thesis suggests that with further research into the connection between music and emotions, along with expanding interest in the growing …

Growing Against The Grain: Confronting White Supremacy And Patriarchy In Gardens In The Dunes, Andre Cole May 2018

Growing Against The Grain: Confronting White Supremacy And Patriarchy In Gardens In The Dunes, Andre Cole

University Honors Theses

Gardens in the Dunes is a novel from 2008 by indigenous author Leslie Marmon Silko about gardening, family, and the looming threat of White, male hegemony in the late 1800's. By analyzing the characters and the garden settings, a pattern of various resistances and oppositions to this colonial violence emerges that I believe is useful for a case study in making meaningful strides in confronting contemporary support for white patriarchy.

Intergenerational Value Transmission Based On Culture, Naomi Miu May 2018

Intergenerational Value Transmission Based On Culture, Naomi Miu

University Honors Theses

This study explored the way in which culture impacts value transmission between parents and children. Specifically, I used previous literature to inform the defining of individualism and collectivism and how value transmission allows for these cultures to be preserved through the generations. Transmission of values was analyzed by conducting six semi-structured, in-depth interviews which resulted in findings that built on previous literature. I found that the values that the participants held came from cultural, parental and religious influences. Collectivist participants more consistently identified with maintaining similar values as their parents into adulthood while individualist participants reported more autonomous tendencies in …

The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Gay Men's Health Disparities, Andrew M. Edwards May 2018

The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Gay Men's Health Disparities, Andrew M. Edwards

University Honors Theses

This study was undertaken to better understand how gay men’s subjection to hegemonic masculinity relates to gay men’s health disparities. Statistically, gay men are subject to numerous health disparities, most notably regarding their sexual health, substance use, and mental health. Masculinities are a relevant framework to contextualize these disparities, as masculinities, and specifically hegemonic masculinity, affect how the gay man engages with himself and society. Employing a qualitative, cross-sectional design, this study utilized in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten gay men residing in the Portland-metro area. Participants detailed a thematic sociocultural framework in which gay masculinity performance is ubiquitously graded on …

Food security is a growing global issue. Poverty and malnutrition kill millions of people worldwide every year. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of poverty and malnutrition in the world. Previous development strategies in sub-Saharan Africa that have attempted to alleviate poverty and eradicate malnutrition have proved unsuccessful. However, there is a fairly new approach to development, known as the sustainable livelihood approach that tackles issues of poverty, malnutrition, and food security in a holistic way. This paper explores the sustainable livelihood approach to development and it’s effectiveness. This paper focuses on a health clinic and rabbit breeding program in …

Social New Orleans: Identity, Capital, Space, Jonathon G. Brearley May 2018

Social New Orleans: Identity, Capital, Space, Jonathon G. Brearley

University Honors Theses

Fundamentally, space is a social product. Social practices both create and are supported by built environment. Urbanity is so much more than a dense array of buildings; it is the street, the sidewalks, the allies, the parks, the people––from the houseless to the penthoused. A city is best understood through the mechanisms that produce the social capital, identity, and space of those people who occupy it. The city of New Orleans is no exception. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina displaced hundreds of thousands of residents, deeply impacting the social economy of the city. This research explicates three unique social practices in …

India's Economic Growth: Role Of Political Performance And Gender Wage Gap, Rajeev Indira Nagaraju May 2018

India's Economic Growth: Role Of Political Performance And Gender Wage Gap, Rajeev Indira Nagaraju

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation will explore how gender wage gap and political capacity represented by relative political extraction affect change in economic growth rate of a country. The main argument of the study is that gender wage gap is affecting the labor market by discouraging productive female labor force from entering the labor market. This in turn affects the efficiency and productivity of the labor market reflected in negative economic growth or economic growth potential being compromised. Here the case of Indian economy is examined. The important policy implication of this study is that it could account for the wage differential between …

What Is Happening In Afghanistan?, Grant M. Farr May 2018

What Is Happening In Afghanistan?, Grant M. Farr

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

On August 21, 2017, President Trump addressed the nation laying out his Afghan strategy. He did not offer much that was new, but he did say that the United States would continue the war in Afghanistan for an indefinite period of time, that he would send in a few thousand more troops, and loosen some of the restrictions President Obama had placed on military action in Afghanistan. This would allow American troops to engage in actual combat instead of functioning as advisors and trainers. He also threatened to withhold aid to Pakistan, which he accused of harboring terrorist organizations, particularly, …

She hid the lifeless fetus behind the family restaurant she worked in (Gray, 2015; Bazelton, 2015). Despite the precarity of her postpartum condition, with a twenty percent loss of blood, Patel was incarcerated after being subject to questioning by County Metro Homicide Unit Detective Galen Pelletier, a few hours after she checked in at the emergency unit. Patel’s pleas of miscarrying were not heeded so she was treated as if she had executed a premeditated …

Military Factors Associated With Smoking In Veterans, Sara E. Golden, Sujata Thakurta, Christopher G. Slatore, Hyeyoung Woo, Donald R. Sullivan

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: Given the high prevalence of smoking among Veterans and the economic, social, and clinical implications, it is important to understand the factors that contribute to smoking in order to focus efforts to mitigate these factors and improve smoking cessation efforts among Veterans. The availability of research on smoking in Veterans compared with civilians is limited given the military-specific differences in their life course. We aimed to identify military-specific factors combined with sociodemographic factors for ever smoking and current smoking among Veterans to inform future interventions. Materials and Methods: We used data from the 2010 National Survey of Veterans, the …

The Labor Between Farm And Table: Cultivating An Urban Political Ecology Of Agrifood For The 21st Century, Amy K. Coplen May 2018

The Labor Between Farm And Table: Cultivating An Urban Political Ecology Of Agrifood For The 21st Century, Amy K. Coplen

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The variegated landscape of food production and consumption reveals a great deal about socionatural relations and processes of urbanization and globalization under capitalism. Food production has changed dramatically over time, shifting away (but never fully divorced) from the rural agrarian landscape to spaces that are characterized as industrial and/or urban. Workers transform nature at each stage in the food production process, not only on farms but also in processing plants, grocery stores, restaurants, and other spaces. This paper draws on urban political ecology (UPE) to position labor as central to understanding the socioecological relations embodied in food systems. It puts …
