The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang Nov 1974

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang

Dissertations and Theses

The object of this research was to develop an arsenic(V) selective electrode. The electrode is based on a solid state membrane prepared by pressing a precipitate of silver arsenate-silver sulfide into a pellet. After the electrode was made, experiments were designed to check for three general characteristics of the electrodes: dependence of potential on pH for constant arsenic(V) concentration; dependence of potential on arsenic(V) concentrations at constant pH and extent of interference due to phosphate and arsenic(III) ions. From these measurements, it was found that Ag2HAs04 was formed originally in the membranes containing a small fraction of …

An Investigation Of Tympanometric Measurements On An Older Adult Population, Marguerite Ann Fine Nov 1974

An Investigation Of Tympanometric Measurements On An Older Adult Population, Marguerite Ann Fine

Dissertations and Theses

Prior to this investigation, there appeared to be no published research data available on tympanometric configurations obtained from an older adult population. This study was designed to examine tympanograms obtained from an otologically normal, elderly population. Forty individuals, ranging in age from 59 to 83 years, participated in this study. All had a negative history of middle ear pathology and had normal tympanic membranes as determined by otologic examination. From the eighty ears tested, fifty were used in this survey. Conductance and susceptance at 220 and 660 Hz were obtained at each ear and ranges for admittance were computed from …

An Investigation Of Possible Relationships Between Sex-Role Orientation, The Motive To Avoid Success And The Inhibition Of Aggression In Women, Joan Dayger Behn, Barbara Mcduffee Mecca Nov 1974

An Investigation Of Possible Relationships Between Sex-Role Orientation, The Motive To Avoid Success And The Inhibition Of Aggression In Women, Joan Dayger Behn, Barbara Mcduffee Mecca

Dissertations and Theses

In this study, it was proposed that the extent to which an individual accepts the collection of attitudes, mannerisms, and abilities the culture endorses as being feminine or masculine (which we are referring to as sex-role orientation) is related to the appearance of inhibiting fears of social rejection and uneasiness about one’s femininity (which we refer to as the need or motive to avoid success). We further hypothesized that women interested in achievement, being less strongly sex-typed, would feel deviant and exposed as women and would be likely to place a premium on the maintenance of other feminine attributes.

Irish Families In Portland, Oregon, 1850-1880: An Immigrant Culture In The Far West, Michael Kazin Aug 1974

Irish Families In Portland, Oregon, 1850-1880: An Immigrant Culture In The Far West, Michael Kazin

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an attempt to begin an examination of the social history of immigrant families in the cities of the West Coast. I chose to study Irish families in particular because they were the first group of migrants to come in large numbers to the United States from a primarily peasant culture, and because studies of Irish in the cities of the East have emphasized their resistance to assimilation into the dominant Anglicized Protestant society.

The Historical Imagination Of Francesco Petrarch: A Study Of Poetic Truth And Historical Distortion, Sally Scholz Aug 1974

The Historical Imagination Of Francesco Petrarch: A Study Of Poetic Truth And Historical Distortion, Sally Scholz

Dissertations and Theses

In the continuing debate among historians over the nature, if not the actual existence, of the Italian Renaissance, the life of Francesco Petrarch has played a major role. Petrarch was an outspoken critic and commentator on the state of fourteenth-century society. His opinions have been cited by all scholars interested in the origins of the "Renaissance Mind."

The concern of this paper will be to discuss the sources, development, and purpose of Petrarch's historical imagination. By tracing the course of Petrarch's life I have tried to expose the various factors bearing on his psychological development. His "exile" from Italy, early …

On The Reduction Of Many-Body Dielectric Theories To The Onsager Equation, John D. Ramshaw Aug 1974

On The Reduction Of Many-Body Dielectric Theories To The Onsager Equation, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An approximate theory for the dielectric constant ℇ of a dense polar fluid was derived by Ramshaw, Schaefer, Waugh, and Deutch (RSWD). In the present article, the RSWD theory is generalized and made rigorous by another method of derivation. The result is a rigorous expression for ℇ which differs from the RSWD expression by the presence of a fluctuation term. Both the rigorous expression and the RSWD expression are then specialized to the Onsager model. It is found that the rigorous expression for ℇ reduces to the Onsager equation, but that the RSWD expression does not because the fluctuation term …

A Historiography Of The Elizabethan Poor Laws: Late Xixth And Xxth Century Historians, Susan C. Mcnaught Jul 1974

A Historiography Of The Elizabethan Poor Laws: Late Xixth And Xxth Century Historians, Susan C. Mcnaught

Dissertations and Theses

The Elizabethan poor laws stand as a great work from a dynamic period. How and why they were formulated have been questions which historians have asked for centuries. The discussions of these questions have varied, depending on the personal values and biases which each historian brought to this study. It is generally agreed that a very important function of the historian is interpretation. The study of history is not only a study of the events, but a study of the historians and their differing interpretations of those events.

In the past one hundred years, numerous historians have devoted themselves to …

James Butler And The Royalist Cause In Ireland, 1641-1650, Monica A. Brennan Jul 1974

James Butler And The Royalist Cause In Ireland, 1641-1650, Monica A. Brennan

Dissertations and Theses

On June 19, 1647 Ireland's Lord Lieutenant, the Marquis of Ormond, unconditionally surrendered the city of Dublin to the parliament of England. Ormond's biographer, Thomas Carte, records that in January of this year the marquis received a private dispatch clearly indicating Charles I's pleasure -- if it were impossible to hold Dublin and the other royalist garrisons in his name they were to be surrendered to the English rather than the Irish. The loss of the major royalist stronghold in Ireland proved, in effect, to be the turning point of the war in that kingdom; its loss has given Ormond's …

An Application Of A Token Economy In A Residential Treatment Center For Pre-Adolescent And Adolescent Girls, Eileen M. Moriarty Jul 1974

An Application Of A Token Economy In A Residential Treatment Center For Pre-Adolescent And Adolescent Girls, Eileen M. Moriarty

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to increase the level of completed academic tasks through the use of a token economy system with female adolescents in an institutional classroom setting.

A 70 percent anticipated completion of academic tasks was the primary aim. Secondly, would there he an 80 percent increase of appropriate behaviors following intervention?

Six emotionally disturbed girls living in an adolescent treatment center; subjects of this study, were unable to adjust to the socially acceptable norms of behavior. Each of these girls was described as too disturbed to learn.

Utilizing the principles of behavioral change, the experimental classroom …

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta Jul 1974

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta

Dissertations and Theses

Spaniards were the first Europeans to explore the Pacific Northwest coastline, but the only evidence of these early visits is a sprinkling of Spanish place names commemorating the intrepid voyagers. The more than four centuries of recorded history since that time are nearly devoid, of references to Spanish-speaking people, especially Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos). Even the heavy influx of Chicano migrant farm workers in the 1950's and 1960's failed to attract the attention of historians or social science researchers. By 1970, the Spanish-language population had become Oregon's largest ethnic minority and was exerting influence in most areas …
