RAIN: Journal of Appropriate Technology
Volume 9, Number 2
Inside: Puppet Show in Sudan; Pacific Northwest Bioregion Report; Ways of Working
RAIN began in October 1974 as a publication of ECO-NET, an environmental education network funded by the Hill Foundation and an Environmental Education grant. Its office was based in the Environmental Education Center at Portland State University. With a focus on the Pacific Northwest, particularly Oregon, RAIN originally described itself as a “bulletin board” with an “emphasis on environmental/energy related and communications kinds of information” and interested in “the evolutionary possibilities of inter-disciplinary connections.”

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
The purpose of this report is to aid the Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood in planning for its future. The neighborhood is a diverse one, with a mix of land uses, ranging from residential to industrial. Residential densities range from single-family detached houses to high-rise apartments. There are many interests concerned with the future of Sullivan's Gulch: residents, businesses, the neighborhood association, property owners, and institutions. This report attempts to address the concerns of all these groups as, together, they are the neighborhood.

Burt Brown Barker: His Role In Historic Preservation In Oregon, Mark Fredric Peterson
Burt Brown Barker: His Role In Historic Preservation In Oregon, Mark Fredric Peterson
Dissertations and Theses
The field of historic preservation has undergone· extreme changes in recent years. Only in the last few years have schools, businesses, and the public been interested in preserving historic sites. Prior to this involvement, historic preservation was accomplished by a few individuals and patriotic groups. Since the field is relatively new, little has been researched and written regarding the early efforts of preservation. One man who emerged as a leader in the preservation movement in Oregon, for over thirty years, was Burt Brown Barker.
This thesis, through research of the files associated with five different preservation projects, examines the role …
Involvement, Social Class And Attrition In Higher Education: The Case Of The Stop Out, Terrence Scott Daugherty
Involvement, Social Class And Attrition In Higher Education: The Case Of The Stop Out, Terrence Scott Daugherty
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis tests the validity of three theories purporting to explain the attrition of stop outs -- why students interrupt their studies with the intent to return to school. Data were gathered at two schools, Portland State University and Reed College. Two theories, those of social class and involvement, were tested at each school as contending explanations of attrition by path analysis of parsimonious models derived by factor analysis. These theories were found to explain little of the variance of attendance pattern (less than 4.3 percent) at either school. No particular lines of causation could be demonstrated at either school. …

The Effects Of Overt And Covert Observation On The Clinical Behavior Emitted By Untrained Clinicians, Carol L.K. Middleton
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the effects overt and covert observation of live clinical sessions have on the number of social/ neutral verbal behaviors emitted by untrained speech clinicians and their respective clients enrolled Summer Term, 1980, in the Articulation and Language Clinic at Portland State University, Speech and Hearing Sciences. The Boone-Prescott Interactional analysis System (Boone and Prescott, 1972), a numerically coded system, was used to record clinician-client interactions. Data were obtained for a randomly selected five minute period from each of forty clinical sessions.

Coherence Effects In Synchronously Pumped Mode‐Locked Dye Lasers, Lee W. Casperson
Coherence Effects In Synchronously Pumped Mode‐Locked Dye Lasers, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A formalism is developed for describing the evolution of picosecond mode‐locked pulses in synchronously pumped dye lasers. The finite phase memory of the molecular wave functions is included, and it is found that the resultant coherence effects can be dominant for operation close to exact synchrony. Considerations of the isotropic molecular orientational distribution and the finite vibrational relaxation times are also essential in obtaining quantitative agreement with experimental results.

Population Projections For The City Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, 1982 - 2002, Population Research Center, Portland State University
Publications, Reports and Presentations
The projections found within this report are an attempt to model population growth in a manner consistent with the expected economic development of the City of Rajneeshpuram. Because of the rather unique features of this community, a rather detailed explanation of the particular techniques used in this study follows. In addition, the report contains the rationale for the various assumptions that went into these projections.

Marital Interaction And Spousal Health And Well-Being, Ralph Arthur Schmoldt
Marital Interaction And Spousal Health And Well-Being, Ralph Arthur Schmoldt
Dissertations and Theses
An attempt is made to determine whether marital interaction is related to the health and well-being of husbands and wives and, if such a relationship exists, to explore the nature of the relationship. The dimensions of marital interaction of interest include cohesion, companionship, cooperation, and consensus. Cohesion is manifest in the feelings a couple has about their relationship. Companionship and cooperation are seen in a couple's joint activities. A shared outlook on life represents consensus.
