Milwaukie Downtown Revitalization Project: The Milwaukie Storefront (Final Report), Mark Clemons, Tom Harry, Sheldon Edner
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The Milwaukie Storefront was a one year program intended as a catalyst for the downtown and to focus attention on the potential for improved business activity. The Storefront, initiated in September of 1983, served as a technical resource, and as a coordinator and facilitator of promotional events in downtown Milwaukie.
This report describes the Storefront as an organization, looking at its structure and original purpose. A review of the individual projects is presented to demonstrate the range of Storefront activities. In drawing conclusions, the report looks at whether the Storefront was able to meet its expectations and cites the accomplishments …

Archeological Implications Of Traditional House Construction Among The Nchumuru Of Northern Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah
Archeological Implications Of Traditional House Construction Among The Nchumuru Of Northern Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ethnographic data from the Nchumuru settlement of Wiae, Kete-Krachi District, northern Volta Region, Ghana, are used to examine the manner in which earth-walled houses in Nchumuru traditional settlements are transferred from the systemic to the archeological record. Archeological survey and excavation of two early Nchumuru sites were conducted to establish the extent to which the observed cultural and natural processes of house and settlement development could help identify the location and distribution of prehistoric structural features. The result was the almost complete reconstruction of the location and distribution of structural features at one of these sites. Knowledge of the mechanisms …
Formulation Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Act Of 1973, Gary G. Skalangya
Formulation Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Act Of 1973, Gary G. Skalangya
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis was intended to delineate the factors contributing to the formulation of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) of 1973--a unique attempt at overhauling federal employment and training policy as well as one of the early efforts at devolving control over grants-in-aid to the subnational level.
Information was obtained from the literature on this policy area, plus documentary sources; such as records of Congressional hearings. From this information, an analytical framework was developed, in which factors contributing to the formulation were classified as; contextual, ideological and those in the form of actors' objectives.
It was found that CETA …

Subsidized Housing For Seniors: A Comparative Study Of Management Styles, Thelma Lofquist
Subsidized Housing For Seniors: A Comparative Study Of Management Styles, Thelma Lofquist
Dissertations and Theses
Studies at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., during the 1970's, defined a management style already existing for high-performance, assisted housing. Project performance in those studies was based in part on: (a) tenant satisfaction with management, (b) tenant turnover rates, (c) rent delinquency rates, (d) vandalism rates, and (e) operating cost per unit. For this dissertation an attempt was made to evaluate the use of high-performance management guidelines with a newly-opened, assisted-housing project for elderly and handicapped residents. The guidelines used for this study were (a) authority for the project was based on-site, (b) maintenance responsibilities were based on-site, (c) …
Physical Illness And Depression: Changes Over Time In Middle Aged And Elderly Persons, Ann K. Williams
Physical Illness And Depression: Changes Over Time In Middle Aged And Elderly Persons, Ann K. Williams
Dissertations and Theses
Recent research in gerontology and geriatrics has identified that one factor repeatedly associated with depression in the elderly is the presence of physical illness. The increasing numbers of elderly persons in the population and their high rate of chronic physical illness make it important to identify critical disease and individual characteristics that play a role in the association of depression and physical illness. In order to investigate and clarify these relationships and concerns, a panel survey of 133 middle aged and elderly persons with recent exacerbations of various physical illnesses was completed. Subjects were referred by medical offices and agencies …
The Measurement Of Change In Well-Being In A Longitudinal Study Of Pre- And Post-Retirees, Marie P. Beaudet
The Measurement Of Change In Well-Being In A Longitudinal Study Of Pre- And Post-Retirees, Marie P. Beaudet
Dissertations and Theses
The primary focus of this dissertation is an empirical investigation of three approaches to the measurement of longitudinal change. For the present study, difference scores, residual change scores, and percentage gain scores are compared to determine if their use results in similar findings when the relationships between three resource areas (health, social, and financial) and subjective well-being are analyzed. The propositions which are tested were derived from current aging theories. Meta-analysis procedures were employed to synthesize past research findings in gerontology. The data which were analyzed are those of the Longitudinal Retirement History Study (LRHS), a research project sponsored by …
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Physical Condition As Measured By The Hand Grip And Leg Press In Retirement Home Residents, Anna Mae Tichy
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Physical Condition As Measured By The Hand Grip And Leg Press In Retirement Home Residents, Anna Mae Tichy
Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between self-esteem and physical condition as measured by hand grip and leg press strength in 65 subjects from two retirement homes was examined in a pre-/post-test design. The originally selected subjects ranged from 60-99 years of age (10 males, 55 females). At the conclusion of the study, 54 subjects remained (5 males, 49 females). The functional description of the subjects was "frail elderly." Although most were mobile and alert, many had some physical or mental disability that prevented them from living independently. The subjects were randomly assigned to three groups: experimental (exercise) and two control groups. There was, …
Socialization And Ideal Expectations For The Health Professional Role In The Provision Of Quality Terminal Care For The Urban Elderly, Margaret B. Neal
Socialization And Ideal Expectations For The Health Professional Role In The Provision Of Quality Terminal Care For The Urban Elderly, Margaret B. Neal
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates socialization and ideal expectations for the health professional role in the provision of quality terminal care. Guiding the research are role theory, socialization theory, and Talcott Parsons' (1951) pattern variables. The research was conducted in three phases. The first phase involved development of an analytical framework elaborating upon Parsons' five pattern variables, which were first conceptualized as dimensions describing the ways in which roles could vary. Specific indicators for each of the pattern variables were developed. Typologies characterizing (1) the medical, or conventional, model and (2) the holistic model (specifically, the hospice model) for the provision of …
The Impact Of Social Networks On Mortality, Disease Incidence, And Disease Progression, Mary Bahner Maxwell
The Impact Of Social Networks On Mortality, Disease Incidence, And Disease Progression, Mary Bahner Maxwell
Dissertations and Theses
Several recent longitudinal studies of large community populations have revealed that people with more extensive network resources live longer. However, it is not known whether this occurs because social ties prevent disease or retard its progression once it occurs. The purpose of this research was to: (1) determine the relationship between social network indicators and mortality in an urban sample; (2) extend that knowledge by addressing the relationship between networks and disease incidence and disease progression; (3) delineate which specific network sectors were the strongest predictors of the health related outcomes. This was uniquely possible because measures of the three …
Saving The Yellowstone, William L. Lang
Saving The Yellowstone, William L. Lang
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Yellowstone River remains the only major free-flowing stream in the lower 48 states. Defenders of free-flowing status argue that benefits derived from maintaining the historic river surpass those gained through dams. The 1973 Montana Water Use Act placed water allocation in the state's hands, and the 1974 Yellowstone Moratorium gave the state three years to determine the Yellowstone's future. The Montana Fish and Game Department requested maintenance of the instream flow to protect the fisheries and the river, and the state Natural Resources board partially granted the request, thereby preventing dams on the Yellowstone.

Greater Portland: Experiments With Professional Planning, 1905-1925, Carl Abbott
Greater Portland: Experiments With Professional Planning, 1905-1925, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Portland, Oregon grew so rapidly in population and wealth between 1905 and 1912 that the city's business leadership called for a systematic plan for future urban growth. The City Improvement League accepted the architectural recommendations of Edward H. Bennett to develop outward from the city's center through a series of government buildings, neighborhood parks, and parkways. Unfortunately, the local economic boom collapsed in 1912 and ended any chances of implementing Bennett's plan. Six years later, prosperity returned and a new architectural proposal by Charles Cheney gained acceptance, only to be subverted by the post-World War I economic slump.
Job Satisfaction Of Teachers In The Portland Metropolitan Area: An Examination Of Differing Factors And Their Relationship To Herzberg And Lortie Theories, Laura Lee Perko
Dissertations and Theses
This study addresses job satisfaction of public school teachers in seven districts of the Portland Metropolitan Area (N = 2,133; validated response = 1,444; ratio of 67.698 percent). The three research questions are: (1) How satisfied are teachers in the PMA with their jobs? (2) What are the primary differing factors affecting teacher satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and do these factors and their relationship to satisfaction conform with Herzberg and Lortie theories? (3) How does satisfaction and dissatisfaction vary as a function of the following "demographic" factors: age, sex, grade level, years of service, highest degree earned? Findings from the three …

Economic Determinants Of Residential Mortgage Choice, Marvin J. Horowitz
Economic Determinants Of Residential Mortgage Choice, Marvin J. Horowitz
Dissertations and Theses
Variable rate mortgages (VRMs) have been introduced into the mortgage market as a means of addressing the housing finance problems encountered over the past two decades. To learn more about the demand for VRMs, this study analyzes borrower choice behavior and its economic determinants. In order to estimate the probability of borrowers choosing VRMs rather than conventional fixed rate mortgages, discrete choice (logit) models are specified and validated for both cross-section and pooled time-series cross-section data samples. These samples contain mortgage application information for the years 1978 through 1981. They were drawn from the Loan Register Report of the California …
Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Ring-Laser Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson
Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Ring-Laser Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Complex spontaneous-pulsation phenomena have been reported in xenon lasers operating at 3.51-μm wavelength, and a theoretical explanation for these effects has been given. However, the published models contain various simplifications and have so far yielded only qualitative agreement with xenon-laser experiments. Reported here is a more rigorous analytical model, which for the first time provides quantitative agreement with experimental observations. This model should also find direct application in interpreting or predicting the behavior of other spontaneously pulsing laser systems.
Spatial Clustering Of Sector Linked Industry In An Urban Economy, Colleen Greer Acres
Spatial Clustering Of Sector Linked Industry In An Urban Economy, Colleen Greer Acres
Dissertations and Theses
The influence of economies of agglomeration on location decisions has been debated since it was advanced by Alfred Weber in 1909. Empirical findings at the international, national, and regional levels do not definitely support the efficacy of such economies. No study has been done at a local level, the one inherently appropriate to the Weber premise. Further, most studies have used highly generalized manufacturing groupings. The importance of intra-industry and inter-industry determinants of spatial proximity in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area was investigated in this study. The data base included 220 industries with 2,111 firms employing 108,295 workers. National input-output …
Growing Old And Going Straight: Examining The Role Of Age In Criminal Career Termination, Annette I. Jolin
Growing Old And Going Straight: Examining The Role Of Age In Criminal Career Termination, Annette I. Jolin
Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to investigate mid-life desistance from crime as a function of general mid-life change. Adult developmental theory postulates that major occupational or lifestyle changes occur during mid-life, more so than during other developmental periods in adulthood. Such changes are said to occur in conjunction with specific transitional processes experienced by the middle-aged male. The abandonment of a criminal career at mid-life is viewed as a significant occupational and lifestyle change. It is examined in relation to the postulated transitional processes affecting aspects of the life areas of work and social relationships, as well as health and psychological …
Studies Of Nucleation And Heat Transfer In Liquid Helium Isotopes 3 And 4, David Lezak
Studies Of Nucleation And Heat Transfer In Liquid Helium Isotopes 3 And 4, David Lezak
Dissertations and Theses
We report the results of a series of experiments in three interrelated areas: light induced nucleation of vapor bubbles in superheated liquid helium 4, transient heat transfer in liquid helium isotopes 3 and 4, and homogeneous nucleation of vapor bubbles in superheated liquid helium 3. This work has resulted in significant contributions in each of these particular areas. Our transient heat transfer work has resulted in extremely high temperature measurements of the Kapitza thermal boundary conductance limits in helium 3 and 4, in measurements of the delay time to the onset of film boiling over a wide range of bath …
Women's Labor Force Supply And Commuting Behavior: A Time-Budget Analysis, Ta-Win Lin
Women's Labor Force Supply And Commuting Behavior: A Time-Budget Analysis, Ta-Win Lin
Dissertations and Theses
Female labor and commuting behavior has been inappropriately approached by traditional economic and location theories. While labor economists assume that commuting is a "fixed" element of the cost-of-entrance, they ignore the spatial variation in wage rate or job opportunities. Urban economists, on the other hand, treat the variation in commuting distance as a function of household housing consumption, and a "fixed" amount of labor supply is assumed. Both assumptions are unrealistic, especially in the case of females. The major contention raised in this study is that labor supply and commuting behavior are interrelated decisions. This "simultaneity" relationship should be captured …
Collective Bargaining: A Process Adopted By Oregon's Four-Year Institutions Of Higher Education To Support Faculty Members' Participation In Institutional Governance, Patricia Lillian Chadwick
Collective Bargaining: A Process Adopted By Oregon's Four-Year Institutions Of Higher Education To Support Faculty Members' Participation In Institutional Governance, Patricia Lillian Chadwick
Dissertations and Theses
An evaluative research survey involving 694 faculty members with an academic appointment in Oregon's 4-year unionized institutions of higher education was undertaken to determine whether or not collective bargaining has supported faculty rights for participation in institutional governance. Four hypotheses were formulated to study the relationship between the independent variable of collective bargaining and the dependent variable of institutional governance, specific to: (1) professional interest, (2) economic interest, (3) educational policy, and (4) academic and personnel policy. Data received from 486 respondents' questionnaires were used for the Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance to test the four hypotheses. The four hypotheses …
