Children Grow Better in Families. This was the slogan on a 1984 poster developed by the Children's Bureau to emphasize the benefits of adoption -- not only to a waiting child, but to the adoptive home itself through the enrichment the new member brings to the existing family system. The slogan rings true for all types of families -- not only those restructured through adoption or remarriage, but those that are formed in more conventional ways. The child welfare system today is heavily invested in family preservation and the philosophy of permanency for children who have been placed outside their …

Decay Of Molecules At Spherical Surfaces: Nonlocal Effects, P.T. Leung Apr 1990

Decay Of Molecules At Spherical Surfaces: Nonlocal Effects, P.T. Leung

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The decay rates for molecules in the vicinity of a metallic sphere are investigated in a phenomenological approach for very close molecule-surface distances d. The Fuchs-Claro model [Phys. Rev. B 35, 3722 (1987)] is adopted to describe the polarizability of the sphere with the nonlocal dielectric response being accounted for within the hydrodynamic description. The results show significant differences when compared with those obtained previously within a local description for dlsim50 Aring, with extra resonances observed in the high-frequency regime, a phenomenon similar to that noted previously by Ruppin (1982), in his calculation of the extinction cross section for such …

Effects Of Bandwidth‐Limiting Tuning Elements In Synchronously Pumped Mode‐Locked Lasers, Bahram Zandi, Lee W. Casperson, Duncan Leo Macfarlane Mar 1990

Effects Of Bandwidth‐Limiting Tuning Elements In Synchronously Pumped Mode‐Locked Lasers, Bahram Zandi, Lee W. Casperson, Duncan Leo Macfarlane

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A description of bandwidth‐limiting tuning filters is introduced into a semiclassical model for synchronously pumped mode‐locked dye lasers. The finite phase memory of the molecular wave functions is included as are the isotropic molecular distribution and the finite vibrational relaxation times. The new set of equations has been solved numerically using the best available values for the various parameters. The results have been compared with experimental data obtained using a rhodamine 6G dye laser, which is synchronously pumped using an acousto‐optically mode‐locked argon laser. Tuning element effects have been studied using two‐ and three‐plate birefringent filters and a tuning wedge, …

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

This report provides population estimates for Oregon and its counties and cities for the years 1980 through 1989. As mandated by Oregon law, the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University, acting on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, annually estimates the July 1 population for each incorporated city and county in Oregon. These figures must be certified to the Secretary of State by December 15. When certified the population estimates are used in the allocation of certain state tax revenues to cities and counties.

Utopia And Bureaucracy: The Fall Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, Carl Abbott Feb 1990

Utopia And Bureaucracy: The Fall Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

During 1981-1985, the followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh built a large utopian community in eastern Oregon's solitude and named it Rajneeshpuram. While Rajneeshpuram appeared to be physically isolated and removed from government intervention, it was actually embedded in a dense system of laws and bureaucratic regulations, quite within reach of local, state, and national bureaucracies. It was this ability of the local and state regulators to limit the development that was one of the major factors for the sudden collapse of Rajneeshpuram in the fall of 1985. Other contributing factors were the growing disaffection and factionalism within the commune leadership …

An Analysis Of Bus Ridership Potential To Oregon Health Sciences University Using A Geographic Information System Approach, Richard Lycan, James D. Orrell, Transportation Northwest (Transnow)

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

GIS address-matching and overlay techniques can be used in the analysis of specialized transportation problems. These techniques enhance the spatial resolution of transportation services relative to the locations of potential users of the service. This allows planners to evaluate accessibility issues for identifiable user groups and thus make decisions about the feasibility of adjusting routes or schedules, or providing new services for these users. A case study focused on the commuter base of Oregon Health Sciences University is presented as an example of such an application.

Issues Concerning The Internship Selection Process, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

This article's study examines the issues concerning internship selection. Data was collected from 10 APA (America Psychological Association) accredited internship sites. Initial results suggest that the current process of internship selection is too costly for all participants. Computer based matching is suggested as a solution.

Family Communication Patterns: Measuring Intra-Personal Perceptions Of Inter-Personal Relationships, L. David Ritchie, Mary Anne Fitzpatrick Jan 1990

Family Communication Patterns: Measuring Intra-Personal Perceptions Of Inter-Personal Relationships, L. David Ritchie, Mary Anne Fitzpatrick

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mass communication researchers interested in family communication have traditionally assumed that family norms are shared by all family members, and apparent disagreement has been ascribed to instrument unreliability rather than to the influence of family structure. A survey of 308 adolescent children and their parents, using the Family Communication Pattern (FCP) instrument, yields evidence of systematic patterns of disagreement between mothers and fathers as well as between parents and children. These results suggest that future theories of family communication cannot ignore the influence of intra-familial conflict and power relationships on communication norms and habits.

Terrain Disturbances By Winter Roads In The Lower And Central Mackenzie River Valley, N.W.T., Canada, Christoph Gnieser

Dissertations and Theses

Winter roads, built from compacted snow and I or ice, are common throughout the circumpolar North. They are considered effective and economical means of providing seasonal access into permafrost terrain while minimizing the potential for environmental damage.

The purpose of this study is an appraisal of long-term environmental impacts of winter roads by comparative assessment of terrain morphology, microclimate, permafrost, soils, and vegetation, on winter road right-of-ways and in adjacent undisturbed control areas.

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Training In Cooperative Learning And Teacher Job Satisfaction, Margaret Maloy Dutton Jan 1990

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Training In Cooperative Learning And Teacher Job Satisfaction, Margaret Maloy Dutton

Dissertations and Theses

The research on cooperative learning has been conducted in terms of student achievement but little is known of how training in and use of cooperative learning affects teachers. The central purpose of this study was to examine the association between training in cooperative learning and teacher job satisfaction, with special attention to the subsets of collegiality and efficacy. A second purpose was to examine how levels of job satisfaction, efficacy, and collegiality vary as a function of the following training variables: (a) setting, (b) amount of use, (c) kind of training, (d) preparation for implementation, and (e) opportunity for skill …

Policy Into Practice: A Study Of Legislative Impact On Administrative Practice In Washington Schools, James Carter Leffler Jan 1990

Policy Into Practice: A Study Of Legislative Impact On Administrative Practice In Washington Schools, James Carter Leffler

Dissertations and Theses

This research project was designed to obtain data on factors that influence whether state level Legislative policies affect the changes in practice at which they are directed. Specifically, the study examined a teacher evaluation short form option created in 1985, the original intent of the policy, and the resultant changes in practice. It examined the situations in which the option was utilized, and whether current practice reflected research on effective practices. Phone interviews were conducted to identify legislative intent and to develop study questions and forced choice items. Systematic sampling techniques were used to distribute surveys to principals in every …

The Knowledge Systems Transfer Project: A Multiple Perspective Investigation Into The Integration Of A New Technology Within A Business Unit, Steven Craig Tarr Jan 1990

The Knowledge Systems Transfer Project: A Multiple Perspective Investigation Into The Integration Of A New Technology Within A Business Unit, Steven Craig Tarr

Dissertations and Theses

Many organizations have been attempting to build a conceptual framework for managing technology, with varying degrees of success. Most begin by consulting leading technology authorities, borrowing elements of their thinking, and adapting these elements to their organizational and personal situations. This dissertation extends this process by using the formal research methodology of multiple perspectives (technical, organizational, personal, and cross-cuing) to build a case-based model of the technology integration process. The research and the model construction benefits from a solid foundation established through a review of technology management and knowledge systems literature. The significant aspects of the research are tied to …

Resolution And Reconstitution Of The Photosystem I Reaction Center: Structure And Function Of The Terminal Electron Acceptor Fa/Fb Polypeptide, Tetemke Mehari Jan 1990

Resolution And Reconstitution Of The Photosystem I Reaction Center: Structure And Function Of The Terminal Electron Acceptor Fa/Fb Polypeptide, Tetemke Mehari

Dissertations and Theses

The Photosystem I core protein containing P700, A₀, A₁, and Fx has been isolated from Synechococcus sp. PCC 6301 and spinach Photosystem I complexes with 6.8 M urea followed by sucrose density ultracentrifugtion. The Photosystem I core protein has retained > 90% of Fx and 100% of P700 (determined by optical spectroscopy) but is totally devoid of iron-sulfur centers Fᴀ and Fв (determined by optical and ESR spectroscopy). SDS-PAGE indicates the retention of the 82-and 83-kDa reaction center polypeptides. The loss of Fᴀ and Fв is further reflected in the decline of acid labile sulfide from 11.8 ± 0.4 S²-/P700 in …

Reduced Form For The General-State Multicenter Integral From An Integro-Differential Transform, Jack C. Straton Jan 1990

Reduced Form For The General-State Multicenter Integral From An Integro-Differential Transform, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a previous paper Gaussian transforms were utilized to obtain the analytically reduced form for the class of multicenter integrals containing a product of hydrogenic orbitals for s states, Yukawa or Coulomb potentials, and plane waves. In the present paper a related transformation is developed for nonspherical functions, leading to the reduced form for multicenter integrals that include hydrogenic orbitals representing states of arbitrary angular momentum.

The Determinants Of Opec Market Share Stability, Fahed M. Al-Ajmi Jan 1990

The Determinants Of Opec Market Share Stability, Fahed M. Al-Ajmi

Dissertations and Theses

The objectives of this dissertation are to explain the production behavior of OPEC's member countries from 1971 to 1987 and to determine whether there was any structural shift in OPEC's production behavior after the organization attempted to assign a quota to each member. This study focused on political and social as well as economic variables, in order to overcome the misspecification of previous models. In order to achieve the above objectives, the study used the following four models, with modifications: the cartel, competitive, target revenue, and property rights models. The double log multiple linear regression technique was used to operationalize …

Traditional And Nontraditional Data As Indicators Of Economic Activity In Rural Communities, Richard Mchugh, Ronald Cooper, Sheila A. Martin, Daniel Otto, Stanley R. Johnson Jan 1990

Traditional And Nontraditional Data As Indicators Of Economic Activity In Rural Communities, Richard Mchugh, Ronald Cooper, Sheila A. Martin, Daniel Otto, Stanley R. Johnson

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

The objective of this study was twofold: (1) to identify nontraditional sources of data that can be used to monitor economic activity in rural areas, and (2) to test the relationship between such data and trends in traditional measures, such as income and employment.

The need for alternative sources of data arises primarily out of the inconsistent quality and availability of traditional economic data at the subs tate level. New sources of data can help reduce this metro-rural data gap and provide a fuller picture of the diverse experience and structure of subs tate economies.

Two sources of nontraditional data …
