Shameless Shame: St. Augustine's Confessions, Regina Eastman
Shameless Shame: St. Augustine's Confessions, Regina Eastman
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
his paper suggests that the “Shameless Shame” of Augustine’s manipulatory language and rhetoric in the Confessions serves the distinct purpose of converting the reader to Catholicism. By tracing the way in which St. Augustine uses diverse literary forms to appeal to his readers and guide their path. This paper suggests that there is a particular reason for the rise of Catholicism, and it’s not just faith. Augustine’s use of language that could appeal to multiple strata of society allowed each to take their path to conversion, but ultimately conversion comes to be seen as a social act. One imbued with …
The Protagoras: An Explication, Victorya Khary
The Protagoras: An Explication, Victorya Khary
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
The paper explores themes of Athenian life, Socratic philosophy, and the theme of Knowledge leading to power in the Protagoras. The setting of the Protagoras is primarily a portico at Callias’s home and Socrates debates Protagoras on numerous subjects. This paper shows that those possessing the most knowledge, Protagoras and Socrates, have the most power by invoking a pyramid structure where both Protagoras and Socrates are at the peak and give the lengthiest speeches. All of the speeches, whether by those at the top of the pyramid or the bottom, provide a glimpse into the unique nature of Athenian intellectual …
An Explication Of The Phaedo, Thahn Ngo
An Explication Of The Phaedo, Thahn Ngo
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
Plato’s Phaedo has multiple meanings and uses its narrative framework, sets up debates, and implements myths and allusions in order to present this multiplicity of meaning. This paper looks at the above characteristics in the Phaedo and interrogates their use. The Phaedo is nominally about the last hours of Socrates’s life, but it contains far more than mere biography. This paper traces the ways Plato uses this basic framework to create a multi-faceted work.
Investigations Of Self, Merlin Douglass
Investigations Of Self, Merlin Douglass
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
While Margery Kempe, fourteenth century English country wife and mystic/pilgrim, and Lady Nijo, thirteenth century Japanese imperial concubine and itinerant Buddhist nun, might at first seem disparate subjects, this paper argues that the themes of pilgrimage and the act of writing an autobiography link them together in interesting ways. By tracing the ways in which both authors form their autobiographies and by using critical theories of autobiography a theme repeatedly appears, that of the welcoming nature of the wilderness of the faith pilgrimage and of the wandering paths both women took in their search for salvation
Evidence And Interpretation In The Archaeology Of Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah
Evidence And Interpretation In The Archaeology Of Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
One of the most challenging statements in the Archaeology of the New World is the one made by James Deetz, an eminent Archaeologist, that: "The personalities of prehistory will remain forever nameless and without faces", (Deetz 1977). Any one with background training in prehistoric Archaeology of the Old ~rid would at first glance at the statement view it with scorn. I was no exception to this reaction. But when I started updating myself on archaeological studies in the Caribbean I started giving the statement a serious thought especially having come across Clinton Black's description of the first Jamaicans as "a …
Women In African Traditional Politics, E. Kofi Agorsah
Women In African Traditional Politics, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article attempts to trace, by use of archaeological, historical and cultural evidence, certain structural features of African political systems that provide specific roles for women and the significance of these structures for African politics (compare Canham 1949; Badu 1965; Adu 1949; Busia 1951). It will be shown that in some cases the bases for the development of such political structures continue to exist in some African political systems of modern times. Examples from Egypt, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria and other countries are used in the discussion to emphasize the significance of some of the roles played by women in …

The Effect Of Road Investment On Economic Development: A Case Study Of The Oregon Counties, Ameer Mohammed Al-Alwan
The Effect Of Road Investment On Economic Development: A Case Study Of The Oregon Counties, Ameer Mohammed Al-Alwan
Dissertations and Theses
Despite its significance and frequent mentioning in the literature, the relationship between road investment and economic development has never been clearly understood. A significant number of scholars in this field have always emphasized the need for further research to examine this complex and dynamic relationship. Historically, investment in transportation networks has played a great role in the development of cities, regions, and nations. This positive view is attributed to the indispensable role that water transportation, and then rail transport, played in the early development of Europe and the United States. In recent years, many scholars, as well as policy makers, …
Principal Vision, Environmental Robustness, And Teacher Sense Of Autonomy In High Schools, Daniel Nordwall Johnson
Principal Vision, Environmental Robustness, And Teacher Sense Of Autonomy In High Schools, Daniel Nordwall Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
This study focused on leadership and its correlates. Theory and research both point to the centrality of the principal's leadership role in school effectiveness. Yet, few studies of school leadership actually examine relationships among leadership variables. This study examined, from the perspective of high school teachers, three leadership correlates: principal vision, environmental robustness and teacher autonomy. Principal vision was conceptualized as the capacity of the principal to see the difference between what is and what might be, thus enabling others to accept and act on the possibilities of what might be. Environmental robustness was defined as the perceived dramatic content …

A Mathematical Model For Outgassing And Contamination, W. Fang, M. Shillor, E. Stahel, E. Epstein, C. Ly, J. Mcniel, Edward D. Zaron
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A model for the mathematical description of the processes of outgassing and contamination in a vacuum system is proposed. The underlying assumptions are diffusion in the source, convection and diffusion in the cavity, mass transfer across the source-cavity interface, and a generalization of the Langmuir isotherm for the sorption kinetics on the target. Three approximations are considered where the asymptotic behavior of the model for large time is shown as well as the dependence and sensitivity of the model on some of the parameters. Some numerical examples of the full model are then presented together with a proof of the …
An Exploratory Analysis Of Certain Characteristics Of Policewomen: A Second Look, Harry Oliver White Jr.
An Exploratory Analysis Of Certain Characteristics Of Policewomen: A Second Look, Harry Oliver White Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
Female police officers are relatively new to the profession of law enforcement. Prior to 1968, the very few who were employed by police agencies were not permitted to perform the full range of police duties. Subsequent to that time their number has increased so that today they account for approximately 8.3 percent of the total sworn police population. There have been numerous studies which have attempted to identify the sociopsychological characteristics of male police officers. For example, Neiderhoffer reported in 1967 that male officers rate high in authoritarianism, anomia, job dissatisfaction, and choose police work for job security reasons. Very …
The Process Of Neighborhood Development: The Role Of Restrictive Covenants In The Development Of Residential Neighborhoods, Eric David Hart
The Process Of Neighborhood Development: The Role Of Restrictive Covenants In The Development Of Residential Neighborhoods, Eric David Hart
Dissertations and Theses
Restrictive covenants (RCs) consist of legal language that is put in a land parcel deed by the subdivider of a subdivision at the time it is platted. The restrictions usually limit land use and require that the house constructed on the lot be of a certain cost. This thesis addresses four research questions: 1. Is the restrictive covenant (RC) minimum house cost amount directly related to the size of the housing? 2. Do differences in housing size translate into social status differences? 3. Do RCs create homogeneous areas of social status? 4. Are subdivisions with RCs less likely to decline …

The Relocation Of North Bonneville, Washington, By The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers: A Policy Implementation Study, Cecil Eugene Reinke
Dissertations and Theses
This is a policy implementation case study. The case is the relocation of the Town of North Bonneville, Washington, by the U.S. Army Corps of engineers. Three questions are addressed in this study. One, did the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in relocating the Town, accomplish what was intended to be accomplished? Two, how and why were Federal policies applicable to the relocation of this town changed during the implementation process? Three, what can the North Bonneville experience contribute to existent knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of policy implementation? The principal precepts for policy implementation promoted by this study of the …

This thesis will consider two men who, when caught in moral dilemmas, cited a particular Biblical narrative in their attempt to receive forgiveness and acceptance from their audiences. Both men were significant religious figures within their respective denominations and both men received public scrutiny following their sinful actions.
Sedentism: A Temporal Shift Or A Transitional Change In Hunter-Gatherer Mobility Patterns?, Kenneth M. Ames
Sedentism: A Temporal Shift Or A Transitional Change In Hunter-Gatherer Mobility Patterns?, Kenneth M. Ames
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Archaeologists widely perceive sedentism as a necessary precondition for social elaboration and complexity among hunter-gatherers. The origins and causes of sedentism are major archaeological research problems, and researchers concern themselves with the transition between nomadism and sedentism. In this paper I argue that there is only variation in residential patterns, which may include sedentism; that sedentism, however it is defined, is not a stable residential pattern among hunter-gatherers; and that, rather than explain the causes of sedentism, one must explain shifts in residential mobility patterns. The case study illustrating these points is drawn from the dry interior region of the …

The Archaeology Of The Longue Durée: Temporal And Spatial Scale In The Evolution Of Social Complexity On The Southern Northwest Coast, Kenneth M. Ames
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The emphasis on temporal and geographic scale of the French Annales school of history (cf. Braudel 1980; Baker 1984; Lewthwaite 1988) is the inspiration for this paper. Braudel (1980) divides time into three durations: short term events (days, weeks, months, a few years), medium length conjunctures (years, decades, even major portions of centuries), and long term structures (which may last centuries, even millennia). This last duration is the longue durée. Basic to Annales' thought - and the longue durée - is the idea that to understand historical developments, to explain their causes and dynamics, one must know their temporal and …
Creative Drama As An Instructional Strategy In Adult Christian Education, Darlene Richards Graves
Creative Drama As An Instructional Strategy In Adult Christian Education, Darlene Richards Graves
Dissertations and Theses
This study reviews the tenents of adult learning. Christian education and creative drama and presents the observation that there are parallel objectives in each of these three major areas. Noting that creative drama is rarely used in adult Christian education, which is primarily cognitive-based and lecture-discussion oriented, the study proposes the application of creative drama strategies to provide an alternative experiential learning process and therefore create a drama strategies to provide an alternative experiential learning process and therefore create a balance of focus between cognitive, affective, reflective and active learning styles in adult Christian education. It also suggests that through …

The purpose of the study was to examine retirement decision making of certificated employees (N = 284 respondents N = 241) of the Beaverton School District in a near retirement age category. The Beaverton School District is a large suburban school district near Portland, Oregon. It currently serves over 25,000 students and employs approximately 2,600 certificated and classified employees. The study answered the following questions:
- Can psycho-social factors be identified that will enable the Beaverton School District to help potential retirees make an informed decision to retire?
- What personal factors affect a person's decision to retire?
- Does it matter, in …
A Study Of Qualitative Miscue Analysis Scoring Systems For Identification Of Instructional Reading Levels, Sylvia Estelle Dean
A Study Of Qualitative Miscue Analysis Scoring Systems For Identification Of Instructional Reading Levels, Sylvia Estelle Dean
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the accuracy and practicality of May's Poor Reader (PR) scoring system for the informal reading inventory (IRI), an individual assessment device designed to determine a student's instructional reading level. The PR is a qualitative scoring system developed by Frank May that examines only two miscues (defaults and meaning-denigrating substitutions) in arriving at an estimate of instructional reading level. The predictor variable, PR, was compared for accuracy and practicality with five other predictor variables consisting of four traditional quantitative scoring systems and an additional qualitative system of May's; PR was also compared …
Development And Applications Of High Resolution Kinetic Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometry In Atmospheric Chemistry, David Michael Myton
Development And Applications Of High Resolution Kinetic Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometry In Atmospheric Chemistry, David Michael Myton
Dissertations and Theses
Much important work has been done to understand reaction pathways and identify products, yields, and reaction rates for atmospheric oxidation processes. Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) are the most significant of the organic compounds present in the atmosphere from a chemical perspective and are released into the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic sources. The oxidation of these hydrocarbons by hydroxyl radical HO generates products that may themselves be toxic, that play a major role in the formation of photochemical smog, and that to a lesser extent contribute to the formation of acid precipitation. NMHCs have chemical reactivities many times that of …
A Structural Analysis Of Corporate Political Activity: An Application Of Euclidean Modeling To The Study Of Intercorporate Relations, Colleen Bridget Mullery
A Structural Analysis Of Corporate Political Activity: An Application Of Euclidean Modeling To The Study Of Intercorporate Relations, Colleen Bridget Mullery
Dissertations and Theses
During the past two decades business has become increasingly active in the political process, and scholars continue to debate the extent to which this activity is organized. This fundamental issue is addressed by examining corporate political activity within the context of resource dependence and class cohesion theories. Political action committee (PAC) campaign contributions, this study's measure for corporate political activity, are structurally analyzed to determine if either resource dependence or class cohesion theory explains the forces which drive business participation in the U.S. public policy process. The rationale which forty-two diverse corporate PACs exercise when selecting which congressional campaigns to …

Adsorption To Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine Membranes In Gel And Fluid State: Pentachlorophenolate, Dipicrylamine, And Tetraphenylborate, Pavel Smejtek, S. R. Wang
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We measured the dependence of electrophoretic mobility of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles on the aqueous concentration of negatively charged ions of pentachlorophenol (PCP), dipicrylamine (DPA), and tetraphenylborate (TPhB). The objective was to determine how the physical state of hydrocarbon chains of lipids affects adsorption of lipophilic ions. The studies were done at 25 and 42 degrees C to determine adsorption properties of DPPC membrane in the gel and fluid state, respectively. From the analysis of zeta-potential isotherms in terms of Langmuir-Stern-Grahame model we obtained the association constant, K, the area of the adsorption site, Ps, and the linear partition coefficient, beta. …
