Assessment: Authentic Strategies For Early Childhood Education, Gail Ann Hathaway Tupper Aug 1992

Assessment: Authentic Strategies For Early Childhood Education, Gail Ann Hathaway Tupper

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between assessment techniques and reporting procedures in early childhood settings. Discrepancies between curriculum being presented and skills and progress being reported are examined.

The curriculum used in this study is Portland Public Schools' Piaget Curriculum, which stresses active, scientific problem solving for children 4 to 6 years old. A variety of assessment, observation, recording and reporting tools are suggested, implemented and critiqued. Creation of a portfolio to store and showcase these items is suggested and explained.

The important role of parents and families in the assessment process is studied. Strategies for involving parents at all …

Regional City And Network City: Portland And Seattle In The Twentieth Century, Carl Abbott Aug 1992

Regional City And Network City: Portland And Seattle In The Twentieth Century, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, have comparable early histories, similar economic bases, and parallel demographic profiles, their responses to the rise of a global economy in the 20th century differ. Both were regional capitals in the first half of the century. Since then, however, Portland has kept its traditional role and has gained ground as a regional capital, while Seattle has become a network city transferring goods, services, and ideas reaching beyond the Pacific Northwest. New Speckle Technique For Noncontact Measurement Of Small Creep Rates, Donald D. Duncan, F. Fausten Mark, Lawrence W. Hunter Jul 1992

New Speckle Technique For Noncontact Measurement Of Small Creep Rates, Donald D. Duncan, F. Fausten Mark, Lawrence W. Hunter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A highly sensitive method for measuring thermal expansion, mechanical strain, and creep rates has been developed. This technique is based on Yamaguchi's speckle strain gauge concept, but uses a novel data-processing approach that provides estimates of the time rate of inplane strain. The approach is appropriate for assessing very small strain rates in hostile environments. It provides simultaneous global estimates of the strain at both small and large gauge sizes. This may be of importance in studying materials with different short- and long-range orders. General advantages of the technique are compact design, modest resolution requirements, insensitivity to surface microstructure changes …

The Practical Relevance Of Deep Ecology, David Johns Jul 1992

The Practical Relevance Of Deep Ecology, David Johns

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

As proponents of Deep Ecology and Biocentrism have begun to define both a vision for the future and a critique of the existing human relationship with the rest of nature, they have often been the subject of criticism from the Third World and from leftists in the developed world concerned with Third World issues. They are commonly charged with failing to adequately take into account the complexity of the human social dynamic involved in destruction of the environment; ignoring that human societies are under the control of elites who benefit from the degradation of nature while most people suffer; failing …

Issues In Calculating Traffic Impact Fees: A Review Of The Literature, Anthony M. Rufolo, Catherine T. Lawson

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Over time, the concern has grown that government is not funding infrastructure investment in United States at a sufficient level. Funding of infrastructure has been a joint effort of all levels of government, but reductions in the federal contribution (after adjusting for inflation) have shifted more of the cost onto state and local governments. Many studies have identified massive funding requirements that are not being met. The failure to meet requirements would be rational if they are based on standards of service which are set unrealistically high or on other conceptual errors; however, failure to provide the funding likely to …

"Ambition Has Always Been My God": William Winlock Miller And Opportunity In Washington Territory, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

In October 1875, when he was at the acme of his success as a pioneer Olympia businessman, William Winlock Miller offered some fatherly advice to an elder sister's son who had recently emigrated from Illinois:

If your object in corning hither was to get employment as a clerk it was injudicious-we only want men here who have muscle and are willing to labor. But now that you are here I would make the best of it. ... Avoid saloons and all places of vice. Don't drink, chew, or swear. Start at the foot of the ladder. Practice economy. Every young …

Effective Middle School Teaching: Factors That Promote And Maintain It, Judith Ann Smith Jul 1992

Effective Middle School Teaching: Factors That Promote And Maintain It, Judith Ann Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The past thirty years has seen the middle school as an organization come of age and with it a renewed emphasis on meeting the needs of the early adolescent student. Although many current studies have addressed middle school issues, one of the most significant was the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development's Turning Points: Preparing Youth for the 21st Century (1989). It claimed that the middle school is the "last best chance" to turn young lives toward a meaningful future and, in order to do so, schools must be staffed with "expert" teachers.

Once one knows what an "expert" teacher is, …

Intergenerational Programming: A Confluence Of Interests Between The Frail Elderly And Urban Youth, Doris Schindler Jun 1992

Intergenerational Programming: A Confluence Of Interests Between The Frail Elderly And Urban Youth, Doris Schindler

Dissertations and Theses

Two groups of urban residents present ongoing problems, the frail elderly and disadvantaged youth who are approaching transition from school to the work force. Many of the disadvantaged youth are at risk because of family background, inadequate education, and lack of work experience. Many of the frail elderly are unable to care for themselves because of debility, chronic illness, or functional impairments.

The United States is experiencing an unprecedented increase in the numbers of persons over 65 years of age and it is expected that between 1980 and 2000 there will be a 67 percent increase in persons 80 and …

Attitude Functions And Political Behavior: The Issue Of Gay Civil Rights, Josephine Young Jun 1992

Attitude Functions And Political Behavior: The Issue Of Gay Civil Rights, Josephine Young

Dissertations and Theses

This study explored the relationship between voters' political behavior regarding the issue of gay rights and the underlying psychological needs served by their attitudes on this issue. A telephone survey of 100 randomly selected local voters was conducted, during which Herek's (1987) Attitude Functions Inventory (AFI) was administered. Three of the four attitude function subscales (Experiential- Schematic, Social-Expressive and Ego-Defensive) were confirmed using a LISREL confirmatory factor analysis. The Value-Expressive subscale was not confirmed and showed poor reliability. Pro- and anti-gay rights behavior was measured using a Political Behavior Index (PBI) developed for this study. Regression analyses and MANOVAs were …

Textural Constraints On Effusive Silicic Volcanism: Beyond The Permeable Foam Model, Jonathan H. Fink, Steven W. Anderson, Curtis R. Manley Jun 1992

Textural Constraints On Effusive Silicic Volcanism: Beyond The Permeable Foam Model, Jonathan H. Fink, Steven W. Anderson, Curtis R. Manley

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transitions between explosive and effusive phases of silicic volcanic eruptions have been related either to stratification of volatiles in the source magma body or to the loss of volatiles through the permeable host rock of the conduit. One way to distinguish between these two models is to map and analyze the vesicular and glassy textures found in silicic lava flows. In this paper we present textural observations and isotopic evidence from active and Recent silicic lava flows which show thaI at least some vesiculation occurs during surface advance of extrusions, after magma has reached the earth's surface. This view is …

Oikos And Polis In The Medea: Patterns Of The Heart And Mind, Debra Blankenship Jun 1992

Oikos And Polis In The Medea: Patterns Of The Heart And Mind, Debra Blankenship

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

In Euripides’s The Medea, the dichotomy of traditional values associated with oikos and polis serves as a means by which to comment on the issues of fifth century Athenian life. This paper shows how oikos the private domain) and polis (the public domain) come to be separate and conflicting concepts in the democracy of Athens. Euripides shaped The Medea around the idea of Medea throwing off the bonds of oikos as a result of her desire for revenge on Jason. Medea knowingly denies the bonds of oikos in order to assert her power. This paper finishes with a nod towards …

Perceiving And Coping With Exclusion: The Socialization Experiences Of Ethnic Minority Nursing Students, Sarah Porter-Tibbetts

Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on the experiences of ethnic minority nursing students at a predominately white institution, the Health Sciences University School of Nursing in an attempt to learn more about the stress, appraisal, and coping of this group of individuals. The University School of Nursing was selected as a comparison site as it offered a setting with no predominate ethnic group. Faculty•s perceptions of students stress, appraisal and coping were sought to provide a context for the students• experience. A review of the literature indicated that ethnic minority students in predominately white universities experience alienation. At some universities white and …

Homer In Virgil, Thomas Kerns Jun 1992

Homer In Virgil, Thomas Kerns

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

This paper argues that the biggest influence on Virgil’s Aeneid was Homer’s epics. By tracing Homer’s influence on the Aeneid, there is a heightened sense of the reasons underlying the themes in Virgil’s writing. One of Virgil’s main purposes in writing the Aeneid is to identify Augustus with Aeneas. In the end, this paper suggests that not only are the influences of Homer important for an understanding of the Aeneid, but in fact are vital for it to accomplish its goals.

Diurnal Ho₂ Cycles At Clean Air And Urban Sites In The Troposphere, Thomas M. Hard, C. Y. Chan, A. A. Mehrabzadeh, Robert J. O'Brien

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

HO₂ concentrations have been determined at two Oregon sites for continuous periods of 36 to 48 hours, using fluorescence assay with gas expansion. At the sea level coastal site (45degN 124degW), NNW winds prevailed during daytime, and a point measurement of very low total nonmethane hydrocarbon concentration indicated the presence of remote tropospheric air of oceanic origin. At the urban site, HO₂ was determined during moderately low ozone pollution levels. At both sites, maximum daily [HO₂] was in the range of 1-2times10⁸ cm⁻³ under clear-sky conditions, with an estimated overall uncertainty of 40%.

Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan Jun 1992

Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan

Dissertations and Theses

Elderly people with irreversible cognitive declines such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) make many demands on those who must care for them, whether those caregivers are family members or the paid staff of nursing homes. When family members no longer have the capacity to meet these demands, a move to a nursing home or other formal care facility becomes the only solution. Such a shift does not, however, mean the end of family caregiving. Instead, the family's caregiving activities must be integrated with the ongoing efforts of the formal care staff. Currently, relatively little is known about 1) what families experience …

A Diagnostic Analysis Of Elementary Principal' Practices Which Serve Youth At-Risk Of School Failure, Rikki Kenneth Patrick May 1992

A Diagnostic Analysis Of Elementary Principal' Practices Which Serve Youth At-Risk Of School Failure, Rikki Kenneth Patrick

Dissertations and Theses

This study provides a description of the practices elementary school principals employ to reduce the likelihood that at-risk youth will actually experience school failure. The problem investigated in this study is reflected in this broad question: What is the relationship of principals' practices to the provision of service for at-risk youth?

Differences in the importance and frequency of use of practices by principals were compared. Variables such as school size, percentage of students who are eligible for free lunch, percentage of students who are at-risk, student mobility, and principal's rating of how successfully their school is serving at-risk youth were …

Modeling Techniques For Water Supply Forecasting In The Western United States, David Charles Garen May 1992

Modeling Techniques For Water Supply Forecasting In The Western United States, David Charles Garen

Dissertations and Theses

Water supply forecasting in the western United States is the prediction of the volume of water passing a given point on a stream during the primary snowmelt runoff season. Most water supply forecasts are produced from multiple linear regression models using snowpack, precipitation, and streamflow measurements as independent variables. In recent years, conceptual watershed simulation models, typically using a time step of one day, have also been used to produce these forecasts.

This study examines model usage for: water supply forecasting in the West and has three specific purposes. The first is to examine the traditional usage of multiple linear …

A Cycle Of Crisis And Violence : The Oregon State Penitentiary, 1866-1968, Joseph Willard Laythe May 1992

A Cycle Of Crisis And Violence : The Oregon State Penitentiary, 1866-1968, Joseph Willard Laythe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines seven crises at the Oregon State Penitentiary between 1866 and 1968 which are symptomatic of a larger pathology of power at play at the institution. These prison crises brought the pathology of power out from behind the thick grey walls of the institution and to the eyes and ears of an uninformed public. This arousal of such attention forced the prison to re-evaluate its penal model, enact half-hearted reforms, but then resume to the institution's traditional pattern and style of punishment. This inability to address the crises or resolve the immediate problem points to a larger problem--namely …
