Limiting Noise Exposure Associated With Hearing Aid Use, Alison Mary Gilbert Dec 1995

Limiting Noise Exposure Associated With Hearing Aid Use, Alison Mary Gilbert

Dissertations and Theses

Industrial workers who have sustained hearing losses often wear hearing aids on the job in order to hear their co-worker's speech. However they risk damaging their hearing further by amplifying the high levels of background noise typical of such environments. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established guidelines to protect workers' hearing. A maximum allowable level of 90 dBA averaged over a period of eight hours is considered safe. Wearing hearing aids on the job may expose an individual to considerably higher levels, however no guidelines as to maximum allowable levels of amplified noise exist at this time. …

Sri Lanka's "Army Of Housemaids": Control Of Remittances And Gender Transformations, Michele Ruth Gamburd Dec 1995

Sri Lanka's "Army Of Housemaids": Control Of Remittances And Gender Transformations, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

When the mass labor migration of women to the Middle East began in the early 1980's, many Sri Lankan social scientists predicted a revolution in gender equality and a greater participation by women in political and economic decision-making as a result of employment abroad. Noting that gender rarely correlates in predictable ways with social change, and questioning the dominant teleological ideology that change always happens for the better, this paper looks at relations between female migrants in a coastal village in the Southwest and the people responsible for spending and saving the money they remit to the village. Several case …

Performance Of The Housing Market In Abudhabi City And The Government Housing Policies, Nasser Saif Almansoori Nov 1995

Performance Of The Housing Market In Abudhabi City And The Government Housing Policies, Nasser Saif Almansoori

Dissertations and Theses

This research examines the government housing policies and the performance of the housing market in AbuDhabi City. AbuDhabi City and other cities in United Arab Emirates were among the poorest cities in the world about thirty years ago but the new wealth from oil production which started during the early 1960s changed that fact completely. AbuDhabi City, the capital of U.A.E., experienced the most dramatic change in the country as it went through a massive urban transformation. Housing the city's rapidly growing population became among the top priorities of the government and this led to the adoption of many housing …

Quality Of Service Specification For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier Nov 1995

Quality Of Service Specification For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The bandwidth limitations of multimedia systems force tradeoffs between presentation data fidelity and real-time performance. For example, digital video is commonly encoded with lossy compression to reduce bandwidth and frames may be skipped during playback to maintain synchronization. These tradeoffs depend on device performance and physical data representations that are hidden by a database system. If a multimedia database is to support digital video and other continuous media data types, we argue that the database should provide a Quality of Service (QOS) interface to allow application control of presentation timing and information loss tradeoffs.

This paper proposes a data model …

Institutionalized Discrimination: Three Cases In The United States Military, Sarah H. Frost Oct 1995

Institutionalized Discrimination: Three Cases In The United States Military, Sarah H. Frost

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores institutionalized discrimination in the United States Military by examining the rationales given for policies that exclude, or limit the military service of racial minorities, women and homosexuals, and the rationales given for altering such policies.

Outgroups such as racial minorities, women and homosexuals are presumed to be a threat to the white male heterosexual majority within the military services. The presence of these outgroups in the military has been officially characterized as threatening to small-unit cohesion, and therefore threatening to military readiness.

This thesis was first based upon the assumption that the rationales favoring discriminatory policies, and …

Men are increasingly discovering the many joys of active involvement in their children's lives. The special bond between father and child produces measurable, positive effects in regards to a child's self-esteem, gender identity, intellectual growth, curiosity and social skills. Current literature increasingly portrays dads as caretakers, supportive, sensitive and caring. However, this enhanced involvement can be sorely tested when a child has a disability or chronic illness. The dreams fathers have for their child's life, educational, athletic and vocational achievements are threatened.

This workbook is meant to provide basic information and options for developing a strategy within your own community. Since economic, environmental, social, and political aspects differ from town to town, there is no magic wand for developing a sustainable community effort. There are, however, common processes which have been used by communities across the country that can provide a foundation for local efforts.

Fluttering Fountains: Annular Geometry, Lee W. Casperson Sep 1995

Fluttering Fountains: Annular Geometry, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Under certain conditions of flow rate, height, and feedback, periodic or chaotic fluttering oscillations can be observed as the sheet of water from a dam or waterfall fountain descends through the air. Numerical and analytical interpretations of this phenomenon have recently been reported. The extension of these results to other fountain geometries is discussed here together with experimental observations on an annular waterfall fountain.

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Extinction Rate Of Densely Packed Spheres With Clustered And Nonclustered Geometries, Lisa M. Zurk, L. Tsang, K. H. Ding, Dale P. Winebrenner Aug 1995

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Extinction Rate Of Densely Packed Spheres With Clustered And Nonclustered Geometries, Lisa M. Zurk, L. Tsang, K. H. Ding, Dale P. Winebrenner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Scattering and absorption coefficients are presented from Monte Carlo simulations of electromagnetic wave propagation in a volume of densely packed, random dielectric, absorptive spheres. The particles are modeled both with and without a surface adhesion that causes them to form clustered groups. Results for scatterer densities greater than a few percent by volume differ significantly from those obtained under the independentscattering assumption. The extinction rates agree well with analytic dense-medium theory. Results also show that, on account of local fields experienced by the particles, the system absorption is different from that predicted with an assumption of independent absorption. Scattering is …

Origins And Effects Of Thermal Processes On Near-Field Optical Probes, Andres H. La Rosa, B. I. Yakobson, H. D. Hallen Aug 1995

Origins And Effects Of Thermal Processes On Near-Field Optical Probes, Andres H. La Rosa, B. I. Yakobson, H. D. Hallen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An aluminum-coated tapered fiber probe, as used in near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), is heated by the light coupled into it. This can destroy the probe or may modify the sample, which can be problematic or used as a tool. To study these thermal effects, we couple modulated visible light of various power through probes. Simultaneously coupled infrared light senses the thermal effects. We report their magnitude, their spatial and temporal scales, and real-time probe damage observations.Amodel describes the experimental data, the mechanisms for induced IR variation, and their relative importance.

Cornerstones Of Community: Buildings Of Portland's African American History, Darrell Millner, Carl Abbott, Cathy Galbraith

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Bosco-Milligan Foundation is proud to present "Cornerstones of Community - The Buildings of Portland's African American History". This publication had its start in February, 1994 when we sponsored a seminar and walking tour at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church to celebrate Black History Month. In the preparation for that program, we knew we had barely scratched the surface in identifying and documenting the buildings associated with African American individuals, institutions, and events throughout Portland's history. The Bosco-Milligan Foundation made a commitment to continue that effort, based on community interest and a collective desire to attempt to fill in important "missing …
