Understanding Ki In The Daily Experience Of Advanced Practitioners Of Aikido: A Phenomenological Study, Steven C. Andress
Understanding Ki In The Daily Experience Of Advanced Practitioners Of Aikido: A Phenomenological Study, Steven C. Andress
Dissertations and Theses
Ki, Japanese for living energy (Chi in Chinese), is at the absolute core of the Oriental model of medicine and wellness. Complementary to this model, many Oriental martial art exercises have evolved to cultivate Ki for optimal health. However, the concept of Ki remains poorly understood and relatively unexplored in traditional Western health and medical literature. Further, the health focus of martial art research has remained primarily concerned with the arts' contribution to psychological health. This has left a significant gap in our understanding of the other health benefits that these arts and Ki have to offer. To begin closing …

Chaos And Detection, Andrew M. Fraser
Chaos And Detection, Andrew M. Fraser
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
I report on numerical experiments in which a detector reliably found chaotic signals at signal to noise ratios as low as -15 dB. The detector was based on a variant of the hidden Markov models used in speech research. The task was particularly difficult because the Fourier power spectrum of the noise was constructed to match the spectrum of the signal. I review likelihood ratio detectors, limitations on the performance of linear models implied by the broad Fourier power spectra of chaotic signals, and the upper limit that the Kolmogorov-Sinai (KS) entropy of a chaotic system places on the expected …

The Internationalization Of Washington, D.C., Carl Abbott
The Internationalization Of Washington, D.C., Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The globalization of U.S. cities is attracting increasing theoretical and empirical attention. The author analyzes internationally oriented activities in metropolitan Washington, D.C., and demonstrates that the city's international roles are built directly on its historic function as a national city. Focusing on change over time, the author also shows that globalization is a stepwise process: Several key periods of the expansion of international functions were followed by periods of gradual absorption. In comparative context, Washington supports arguments about the separability of international functions and shows the importance of historical development in determining the different ways in which cities interact with …

A Plan For Parks And Recreation In Light Rail Station Communities, Mary Anderson, Heather Coleman, Alan Lehto, Kristina Gifford Mckenzie, Deena Platman, Paul Scarlett
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
This plan proposes new park classifications for THPRD, adding new types of park and recreation facilities appropriate to station communities and adjusting existing classifications to address the needs of a more urban environment. This plan also presents service criteria and design issues that should be considered in siting park and recreation facilities, and elements that should be incorporated into site design. The classifications, service criteria, and design elements were applied to the 170th/Elmonica station area, resulting in a conceptual park and recreation plan for that community, which is also included. Finally, strategies are presented to implement the recommendations contained in …

Output-Based Performance Measures For The North Carolina Office Of Waste Reduction, Sheila A. Martin, James R. Youngberg, Albert D. Bethke
Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications
Research Triangle Institute (RTI) conducted this study to provide the foundation for implementing a results-based performance measurement system. RTI designed a system for NC OWR and similar state waste reduction outreach programs in EPA’s Region 4 that will collect, analyze, report, and maintain the output-based performance measures needed to manage the system, to monitor program scope and effectiveness, and to report to managers and key stakeholders on the program’s success in accomplishing its 0bjectives. Key questions we have addressed in this study include the following:
What is the current best practice for collecting and analyzing information about the effectiveness of …

West Portland Town Center: Developing Partnerships For Planning And Implementation, Matthew Aho, Stevie Greathouse, Kevin Snyder
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
Metro, the regional planning organization for Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties, designated the area in Southwest Portland known as West Portland as a Town Center in its Region 2040 Preferred Growth Concept. Metro's Town Center definition is open to different levels of interpretation without much guidance as to how the Town Center vision (i.e. increased density, a mix of land uses, a sense of place, and an emphasis on alternative modes of travel) is to be planned for and implemented. Since this designation in 1994, public sector planning efforts have been initiated around and specific to the West Portland Town …
Planning Implications Of Globalization In Portland, Oregon, James W. Coker
Planning Implications Of Globalization In Portland, Oregon, James W. Coker
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
It is the purpose of this paper to shed a little light on information that has been gathered on the trends of globalization; to examine those trends as they are occurring within the region within the context of the values and goals of the Portland metropolitan area; and to offer classmates an opportunity for exploring the meaning of these trends and values as they relate to their own particular planning projects.
In short, this entire project is conceived as a point of departure for recognizing the impact of globalization on contemporary planning practice within the Portland metro area. It offers …

"With A View Toward Their Civilization": Women And The Work Of Indian Reform, Terri Christian Theisen
"With A View Toward Their Civilization": Women And The Work Of Indian Reform, Terri Christian Theisen
Dissertations and Theses
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, white middle and upper class women active in reform became involved in the movement for American Indian reform. Focusing on the so-called "Indian problem," groups such as the Women's National Indian Association (WNIA) were formed to address the injustices against, and sufferings of, American Indian people at the hands of the U.S. military due to the increasing pressures and demands of western migration. This study addresses the role white women played in the movement for Indian reform through their involvement either as part of the WNIA membership or as missionaries, teachers or …

Population Estimates For Oregon: July 1, 1995, Howard Wineberg, Population Research Center, Portland State University
Population Estimates For Oregon: July 1, 1995, Howard Wineberg, Population Research Center, Portland State University
Oregon Population Estimates and Reports
This report provides population estimates for Oregon, its counties, and cities for the years 1980 through 1995. As mandated by Oregon law (ORS 190.510 to 190.610), the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University acting on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, annually estimates the July 1 population for each county and incorporated city in Oregon. These population estimates are used in the allocation of certain state tax revenues to cities and counties.
Population figures presented in this report represent all the people who usually reside in the area designated. This includes people living in …
Adsorption Of Ruthenium Red To Phospholipid Membranes, Pavel Smejtek, D. Voelker
Adsorption Of Ruthenium Red To Phospholipid Membranes, Pavel Smejtek, D. Voelker
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We have measured the distribution of the hexavalent ruthenium red cation (RuR) between water and phospholipid membranes, have shown the critical importance of membrane negative surface charge for RuR binding, and determined the association constant of RuR for different phospholipid bilayers. The studies were performed with liposomes made of mixtures of zwitterionic L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (PC), and one of the negatively charged phospholipids: L-alpha-phosphatidylserine (PS), L-alpha-phosphatidylinositol (PI), or L-alpha-phosphatidylglycerol (PG). Lipid composition of PC:PX membranes was 1:0, 19:1, 9:1, and 4:1. Liposomes were processed using freeze-and-thaw treatment, and their size distribution was characterized by light scattering and electron microscopy. Experimental distribution isotherms …
