A Study Of Shame-Proneness, Drinking Behaviors, And Workplace Role Ambiguity Among A Sample Of Student Workers, Sarah Nielsen Haverly Apr 2017

A Study Of Shame-Proneness, Drinking Behaviors, And Workplace Role Ambiguity Among A Sample Of Student Workers, Sarah Nielsen Haverly

Dissertations and Theses

As many as 50% of full time students are employed for pay while enrolled in secondary education (Condition of Education; Planty et al., 2009). It is well documented that college is a vulnerable time for heavy drinking, and similarly, increased consumption among the workforce continues to rise. Student workers, who occupy both roles, therefore may be particularly at risk. The present research explored potential factors related to this stressful dual role experience, which was hypothesized to be related to increased alcohol consumption. One such factor proposed was the self-conscious emotion of shame. According to Hull's (1981) Self Awareness Model, individuals …

Parks, People, And Property Values: The Changing Role Of Green Spaces In Antebellum Manhattan, Catherine Mcneur Apr 2017

Parks, People, And Property Values: The Changing Role Of Green Spaces In Antebellum Manhattan, Catherine Mcneur

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The role that parks played in Manhattan changed dramatically during the antebellum period. Originally dismissed as unnecessary on an island embraced by rivers, parks became a tool for real estate development and gentrification in the 1830s. By the 1850s, politicians, journalists, and landscape architects believed Central Park could be a social salve for a city with rising crime rates, increasingly visible poverty, and deepening class divisions. While many factors (public health, the psychological need for parks, and property values) would remain the same, the changing social conversation showed how ideas of public space were transforming, in rhetoric if not reality.

The Trials Of Displacement: Transnationalism And Interdisciplinary Feminisms In Demetria Martínez’S The Block Captain’S Daughter, Elena Avilés

Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

From the fifteenth century to the twenty-first century, the interaction between dispossession and displacement are central questions Martinez channels in writing. Her work represents the struggle of contemporary feminist interventions on issues of international migration within the annals of the New Mexican borderlands. The power to generate reflexivity about gendered displacement begins to remap vision of identity in print that brings the reader to wage the multiple values of American society. Innovations to the experiences of women of multiethnic backgrounds are perhaps one of the strengths of her latest narrative.

Albuquerque is a backdrop where shifts and dislocations of the …

Legal Writing And International Students: Reconsidering “Complete Immersion”, Alissa J. Hartig

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Before I began my current position, I worked as a writing specialist with multilingual international students in the LL.M. legal writing program at Penn State Law for four years. At the time I started working with law students, I was taking coursework for my Ph.D. in applied linguistics, focusing on second language acquisition and writing. Since I was new to the field of legal education, I tried to get a better sense of what legal writing faculty saw as best practices in working with international students by speaking with faculty, reading articles in law reviews and journals, and attending conferences. …

Enhancing The Career Planning Self-Determination Of Young Adults With Mental Health Challenges, Jo-Ann Sowers, Paul R. Swank Apr 2017

Enhancing The Career Planning Self-Determination Of Young Adults With Mental Health Challenges, Jo-Ann Sowers, Paul R. Swank

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

The impact of an intervention on the self-determination and career planning engagement of young adults with mental health challenges was studied. Sixty-seven young adults, 20 to 30 years of age, with mental health diagnoses (e.g., depression, bipolar disorder) were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Statistically significant greater increases were made by the intervention group versus the control group for self-determination and career planning engagement, and self-determination at least partially mediated increases in career planning engagement. With career planning self-determination interventions, young adults with mental health challenges might be able to achieve better career and life outcomes than is …

Communities Of Practice In Higher Education: Transformative Dialogues Toward A Productive Academic Writing Practice, Janelle De Carrico Voegele, Dannelle D. Stevens

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

Because faculty have advanced degrees, it is often assumed that they have perfected the skills needed to be productive, successful academic writers. In reality, many faculty struggle with the demands of academic writing and the resulting loss of energy for teaching and other aspects of their roles. This article reflects on the impact of an academic writing program through a community-of-practice lens. We describe the program and its elements, its development into a thriving cross-discipline writing community, the role of central program elements such as accountability and dialogue, and the benefits stemming from a learning-community emphasis across program elements

Investigating The Psychological Effects Associated With Motor Neuron Degeneration In Persons Diagnosed With Als, Eloise Colwell Forrest

University Honors Theses

Investigation of the psychological effects of a terminal condition, wherein current care plans are primarily focused on physical rehabilitation and pain management, is crucial. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis enacts irreversible damage to the body of those diagnosed, resulting in neurodegenerative processes that cause paralysis and eventually respiratory failure. There is no known cure or cause, which eliminates many traditional treatment avenues. Though the disease wreaks havoc on the muscular systems of the body there are no direct effects that degrade mental processing, leaving the individual experiencing the condition an aware witness to their own functional loss. Creating a multidisciplinary approach inclusion …

Not A Dirty Word: Encouraging Feminist Activism Through Design And Social Practices, Gabriella L. Mckenzie Mar 2017

Not A Dirty Word: Encouraging Feminist Activism Through Design And Social Practices, Gabriella L. Mckenzie

University Honors Theses

Many young people identify with the statement "I'm not a feminist, but…" (Buschman, Lenart, 2003). According to a survey of college-aged individuals, many of them identified with a feminist viewpoint; however, these individuals reject the label of feminist as well as the group mentality within feminist activism (Buschman, Lenart, 2003). How does one encourage young people that "feminist" isn’t a negative label and that feminism is worthwhile? In my thesis I will attempt to answer this question and start to solve this problem through the use of design principles, printed matter, and factual information on feminism and young people. In …

Investigating The Relationship Between Supervisor Status And The Modus Operandi Of Juvenile Sexual Offenders: A Routine Activity Theory Perspective, Kelly E. Stewart Mar 2017

Investigating The Relationship Between Supervisor Status And The Modus Operandi Of Juvenile Sexual Offenders: A Routine Activity Theory Perspective, Kelly E. Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

A significant proportion of child sexual abuse perpetration is committed by juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs), a subgroup of offenders whose patterns of offending, or "modus operandi," have been found to be markedly different compared to their adult counterparts (Kaufman et al., 1996; Kaufman et al., 1998). Many of these JSOs commit sexual abuse perpetration while acting as a babysitter, or a temporary supervisor to their victim. The present study investigates the routine activities of JSOs and their victims’ caregivers that are associated with the JSO being placed into a supervisory role. The study also investigates subgroup differences in the use …

Land Use Mix And Pedestrian Travel Behavior: Advancements In Conceptualization And Measurement, Steven Robert Gehrke Mar 2017

Land Use Mix And Pedestrian Travel Behavior: Advancements In Conceptualization And Measurement, Steven Robert Gehrke

Dissertations and Theses

Smart growth policies have often emphasized the importance of land use mix as an intervention beholding of lasting urban planning and public health benefits. Past transportation-land use research has identified potential efficiency gains achieved by mixed-use neighborhoods and the subsequent shortening of trip lengths; whereas, public health research has accredited increased land use mixing as an effective policy for facilitating greater physical activity. However, despite the celebrated transportation, land use, and health benefits of improved land use mixing and the extent of topical attention, no consensus has been reached regarding the conceptualization and measurement of this key smart growth principle …

Do Sarcastic Exchanges With Millennial Employees Influence Performance Appraisal Effectiveness?, Karissa Burright Mar 2017

Do Sarcastic Exchanges With Millennial Employees Influence Performance Appraisal Effectiveness?, Karissa Burright

University Honors Theses

This literature review explores the intricacies of sarcasm in the supervisor-employee relationship; particularly, it looks at sarcasm between supervisors and Millennial generation employees and possible ways it influences performance appraisal effectiveness. It focuses on five key intersections, as follows: sarcasm, trust, Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), performance appraisals, and the Millennial generation. The purpose is to identify and define these intersections, their implications, and the gaps in current research. Thus far, there is little research on these intersections, requiring this paper to link the overlapping areas between subjects. Therefore, this research builds upon the work or psychologists, sociologists, human resources management, and …

The Oregon Zoo is home to many exotic animals, including Bornean and Sumatran orangutans. They live in a relatively new naturalistic exhibit and are subject to large volumes of visitor traffic throughout the day. This is a pilot study to determine the variables and details necessary to conduct a more in depth analysis of orangutan welfare in the future. Eleven behaviors were observed to create an activity budget for the orangutans to be used to analyze the effect of different variables on their behavior. The independent variables examined were crowd size, temperature, weather, test day, and individual (in regards to …

INTRODUCTION:

Successful population-level antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence will be necessary to realize both the clinical and prevention benefits of antiretroviral scale-up and, ultimately, the end of AIDS. Although many people living with HIV are adhering well, others struggle and most are likely to experience challenges in adherence that may threaten virologic suppression at some point during lifelong therapy. Despite the importance of ART adherence, supportive interventions have generally not been implemented at scale. The objective of this review is to summarize the recommendations of clinical, research, and public health experts for scalable ART adherence interventions in resource-limited settings.

Each Medium Tells A Different Story: The Effect Of Message Channel On Narrative Persuasion, Nathan Walter, Sheila T. Murphy, Lauren B. Frank, Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati Mar 2017

Each Medium Tells A Different Story: The Effect Of Message Channel On Narrative Persuasion, Nathan Walter, Sheila T. Murphy, Lauren B. Frank, Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Limited attention has been given to the medium of story presentation in this process of narrative persuasion. The present study (N = 243) fills this gap by directly comparing narrative involvement across print and audiovisual versions of the same cervical cancer-related story. The mediation analysis revealed that exposure to an audiovisual narrative was associated with higher levels of cognitive and emotional involvement than exposure to the exact same narrative in its printed form. Yet the higher levels of transportation in the audiovisual condition came at a price of enhancing psychological reactance, eliminating the relative advantage of the film narrative.

Modeling And Analyzing The Impact Of Advanced Technologies On Livability And Multimodal Transportation Performance Measures In Arterial Corridors: Phase 2, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Chawalit Tipagornwong Mar 2017

Modeling And Analyzing The Impact Of Advanced Technologies On Livability And Multimodal Transportation Performance Measures In Arterial Corridors: Phase 2, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Chawalit Tipagornwong

TREC Final Reports

Transportation corridors are complex systems. Tradeoffs, particularly in terms of traffic mobility, transit performance, accessibility and pedestrian interactions, are not well understood. When the focus is on motorized vehicle mobility and throughput, high traffic or vehicle speeds are desirable because at high speeds more vehicles can flow per unit of time and roadway section. However, high traffic/vehicles speeds are not desirable for pedestrians who have to cross urban arterials. In particular, pedestrians can be highly vulnerable at unsignalized, marked crosswalks where pedestrians have the right of way but where drivers’ yield rates are significantly lower than at signalized intersections. Pedestrians are …

Exploring The Positive Utility Of Travel And Mode Choice, Patrick Allen Singleton Feb 2017

Exploring The Positive Utility Of Travel And Mode Choice, Patrick Allen Singleton

PSU Transportation Seminars

Why do people travel? We traditionally assume traveling is a means to an end, travel demand is derived (from the demand for activities), and travel time is to be minimized. Recently, scholars have questioned these axioms, noting that some people may like to travel, use travel time productively, enjoy the experience of traveling, or travel for non-utilitarian reasons. The idea that travel can provide benefits and may be motivated by factors beyond reaching activity destinations is known as “the positive utility of travel” or PUT.

This study presents a conceptual and empirical look at the positive utility of travel and …

Altruistic Punishment Can Help Resolve Tragedy Of The Commons Social Dilemmas, Garrison W. Greenwood Feb 2017

Altruistic Punishment Can Help Resolve Tragedy Of The Commons Social Dilemmas, Garrison W. Greenwood

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Social dilemmas force individuals to choose between cooperation, which benefits a group, and defection which benefits the individual. The unfortunate outcome in most social dilemmas is mutual defection where nobody benefits. Researchers frequently use mathematical games such as public goods games to help identify circumstances that might improve cooperation levels within a population. Altruistic punishment has shown promise in these games. Many real-world social dilemmas are expressed via a tragedy of the commons metaphor. This paper describes an investigation designed to see if altruistic punishment might work in tragedy of the commons social dilemmas. Simulation results indicate not only does …

Webinar: Integrating Explicit And Implicit Methods In Travel Behavior Research: A Study Of Driver Attitudes And Bias, Tara Goddard Feb 2017

Webinar: Integrating Explicit And Implicit Methods In Travel Behavior Research: A Study Of Driver Attitudes And Bias, Tara Goddard

TREC Webinar Series

Car crashes are still a leading cause of death in the United States, with vulnerable road users like bicyclists and pedestrians being injured or killed at rates that outpace their mode share.

Planners, engineers, and advocates are increasingly adopting Vision Zero and Tactical Urbanism approaches and trying to better understand the underlying causes of dangerous roadway interactions. However, existing research into crash causation has focused on instrumental factors (e.g. intersection type, vehicle speed) while little research has probed the role of attitudes or socio-cognitive mechanisms in interactions between roadway users.

Social psychology suggests that attitudes and social cognitions can play …

Individual Decision Making In Online Public-Participation Transportation Planning, Martin Swobodzinski Feb 2017

Individual Decision Making In Online Public-Participation Transportation Planning, Martin Swobodzinski

PSU Transportation Seminars

The empirical evaluation of complex decision support systems is often limited to the self-reported satisfaction of the systems’ users.

Such an approach is problematic due to the conflation of the user's satisfaction related to the decision support system and the decision making process and its outcomes.

In addition, it bears limitations that are common among most techniques that solicit participant-stated feedback.

In this talk, based on data that was gathered by a web-based participatory system for transportation planning in the Puget Sound region, I present analytical methods for the empirical evaluation of decision support systems based on human-computer interaction. In …
