All The Lonely People: An Integrated Review And Research Agenda On Work And Loneliness, Julie M. Mccarthy, Berrin Erdogan, Talya Bauer, Selin Kudret, Emily Campion

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Decades of studies spanning multiple disciplines have provided insight into the critical role of loneliness in work contexts. In spite of this extensive research, a comprehensive review of loneliness and work remains absent. To address this gap, we conducted a multidisciplinary review of relevant theory and research and identified 213 articles reporting on 233 empirical studies from management, organizational psychology, sociology, medicine, and other domains to uncover why people feel lonely, how different features of work can contribute to feelings of loneliness, and the implications of employee loneliness for organizational settings. This enabled a critical examination of the distinct conceptualizations …

Photocathodes From Aerobic Oxidation Of Tellurorhodamines, Amelia Jellison Feb 2025

Photocathodes From Aerobic Oxidation Of Tellurorhodamines, Amelia Jellison

Dissertations and Theses

Growing environmental concerns have facilitated an increased need for renewable energy. Solar energy is an excellent source of renewable energy, however current dye-sensitized solar cells are not efficient enough for commercial use. This thesis attempts to create a novel dye-sensitized cathode to increase the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Dye-sensitized cathodes could lower the energy level on the cathode and thereby increase the overall efficiency of the solar cell, however until now it has not been attempted. A tellurorhodamine dye with a mesityl ring was chosen as the dye for its ability to aerobically oxidize in the presence of light. …

Experiences Of Minority Workers: A Three-Study Dissertation Evaluating Recruitment And Workplace Experiences For Minority Workers, Jennifer Saucedo

Dissertations and Theses

Through a series of three manuscripts, the dissertation explores the experiences of minority groups across different points of the employee life cycle. As minority employees often face a negative set of unique stressors inside and outside of work, this series of papers attempt to further our understanding of minority experiences during the organizational stages of recruitment and retention. The first manuscript tests the effects of recruitment material on pre-hire applicant outcomes for minorities by integrating literature on realistic job previews (RJPs) and diversity recruitment. The experimental study finds that leader diversity testimonials that provide a mix of positive and negative …

Displaced: An Ethnography Of Language And Identity Loss, Ariel Caroline Wilsey-Gopp Feb 2025

Displaced: An Ethnography Of Language And Identity Loss, Ariel Caroline Wilsey-Gopp

Dissertations and Theses

Through ethnography and personal narrative, I explore the language and identity loss of one person, my father, in order to understand the complex issues surrounding the effects of symbolic and structural violence on language and identity development. Through personal narrative, fieldwork, and interviews, I tell the story of one person, born in wartime during Nazi occupied Serbia, and follow the guiding questions: how does language get lost and what are the effects? Drawing on methodology set forth by empirical ethnographical work as well as more recent theory around epigenetics and trauma, my research synthesizes into focus three pillars of understanding …

Youth Experiences Of Participation, Inclusion, And Influence Within A Youth-Serving Organization Implementing Participatory Processes, Rhen M. Miles Feb 2025

Youth Experiences Of Participation, Inclusion, And Influence Within A Youth-Serving Organization Implementing Participatory Processes, Rhen M. Miles

Dissertations and Theses

The youth development field has undergone shifts and reconstructions in how youth are conceived, impacting the approaches of youth-serving programs attempting to facilitate learning, growth, and engagement. Evolving views inform how policymakers, funders, and youth-serving agencies perceive and relate with youth. In turn, these dynamics influence how youth learn to think about themselves, others, and the world. Dominant discourse regarding youth development has been shifting from a deficit-based to an asset-based lens, with the proliferation of Positive Youth Development (PYD) frameworks, which seek to cultivate internal strengths and positive developmental outcomes rather than just prevent negative behaviors and outcomes. Despite …

Seguir Adelante: A Qualitative Exploration Of Latino Farmworkers' Work And Nonwork Resources., Faviola Robles Saenz, Julissa Castellanos Regalado, Larry Martinez, Greg Townley

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Latino immigrant workers have been an exploited community within many dangerous workforces, but especially within the agricultural industry. They are a crucial population for the labor and economy of the U.S., yet Latino farmworkers report feeling expendable, discriminated against, and exposed to hazardous working conditions. Due to these experiences, it is essential to explore the resources that farmworkers find valuable in improving their working conditions. This study draws upon qualitative interviews conducted with 41 Latino farmworkers in Oregon. Themes pertaining to work and nonwork resources were uncovered through thematic analysis, illustrating that farmworkers receive support from their proximal communities and …

Predicting Post-Wildfire Stream Temperature And Turbidity: A Machine Learning Approach In Western Us Watersheds, Junjie Chen, Heejun Chang Feb 2025

Predicting Post-Wildfire Stream Temperature And Turbidity: A Machine Learning Approach In Western Us Watersheds, Junjie Chen, Heejun Chang

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wildfires significantly impact water quality in the Western United States, posing challenges for water resource management. However, limited research quantifies post-wildfire stream temperature and turbidity changes across diverse climatic zones. This study addresses this gap by using Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) models to predict post-wildfire stream temperature and turbidity based on climate, streamflow, and fire data from the Clackamas and Russian River Watersheds. We selected Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) because they handle non-linear, high-dimensional data, balance accuracy with efficiency, and capture complex post-wildfire stream temperature and turbidity dynamics with minimal assumptions. The …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Unsignalized pedestrian crossing accommodations can improve pedestrian safety, yet their quality of service for pedestrians remains understudied. The present study explored whether and how pedestrians’ satisfaction with crossing unsignalized crossings varied according to the type of crossing accommodation used, that is, the rectangular rapid-flashing beacon (RRFB) with median island, median island alone, marked crosswalk, and unmarked crosswalk. The research team collected intercept survey and video observation data from 358 pedestrians across a total of 40 sites in two different cities. Structural equation models illustrated how pedestrians’ crossing-oriented satisfaction was shaped by their positive perceptions of safety and low levels of …

Integrating The Interconnections Between Groundwater And Land Surface Processes Through The Coupled Nasa Land Information System And Parflow Environment, Fadji Z. Maina, Dan Rosen, Peyman Abbaszadeh, Chen Yang, Sujay V. Kumar, Matthew Rodell, Reed Maxwell

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Understanding the interactions between the atmosphere, the land, and the subsurface is fundamental to hydrology and is critical for a better assessment of the impacts of climate change and human management on hydrological systems. However, many land surface models simplify the subsurface hydrology and thereby these interactions. In this study, we couple the land surface model Noah‐MP included in the NASA Land Information System (LIS) with the integrated hydrologic model ParFlow (ParFlow‐LIS) using the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) and the National United Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC). This coupling improves the simulation of water and energy cycle processes by adding …

Phase Of The Seabed Frequency-Domain Reflection Coefficient: Measurements And Modeling, Charles W. Holland Feb 2025

Phase Of The Seabed Frequency-Domain Reflection Coefficient: Measurements And Modeling, Charles W. Holland

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The phase of the seabed frequency-domain reflection coefficient potentially contains valuable information on the geoacoustic properties in a layered/refracting seabed. However, heretofore, the phase has not been exploited. Measurements of phase are presented in an area of thick mud at the New England Mud Patch. In addition, a model is presented along with the modeling results. While this is only a first step towards understanding the potential value of exploiting the phase, it seems clear that in some instances, the phase not only contains valuable geoacoustic information, but carries a higher information content than the magnitude.

Understanding Anionic Hyperporphyrins: Tddft Calculations On Peripherally Deprotonated Meso-Tetrakis(4-Hydroxyphenyl)Porphyrin., Jeanet Conradie, Carl C. Wamser, Abhik Ghosh Jan 2025

Understanding Anionic Hyperporphyrins: Tddft Calculations On Peripherally Deprotonated Meso-Tetrakis(4-Hydroxyphenyl)Porphyrin., Jeanet Conradie, Carl C. Wamser, Abhik Ghosh

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Presented herein is a DFT/TDDFT study of -tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (H[THPP]) and its Meso-deprotonated tetraanionic form; the latter was modeled as both a free tetraanion and with various counterions. Based on our calculations, the experimentally observed hyperporphyrin spectra are attributed to an admixture of phenol/phenoxide character into the a-type HOMO of tetraphenylporphyrin. The admixture results in an elevation of the orbital energy of the HOMO in relation to other frontier orbitals, which accounts for the observed spectral redshifts. The calculations underscore differences in the performance of different exchange-correlation functionals. Thus, while the popular hybrid functional B3LYP greatly exaggerates the redshift of …

Explaining The 2022 Record Low Great Salt Lake Volume, Siiri Bigalke, Paul C. Loikith, Nicholas Siler Jan 2025

Explaining The 2022 Record Low Great Salt Lake Volume, Siiri Bigalke, Paul C. Loikith, Nicholas Siler

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Great Salt Lake reached the lowest water volume in its entire 170+ year record in 2022. To explain this record low we develop and apply a lake mass‐balance model and perform four simulations: one where all input and output variables are fixed to their mid‐20th century average resulting in an equilibrium lake volume, and three others where one of the input variables (precipitation or streamflow) or the output variable (evaporation) follows observations while the other two are fixed to their mid‐20th century average. Results show anomalously low streamflow accounting for the largest proportion of the lake volume departure from …

3F4 Hypergeometric Functions As A Sum Of A Product Of 1F2 Functions, Jack C. Straton Jan 2025

3F4 Hypergeometric Functions As A Sum Of A Product Of 1F2 Functions, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper shows that certain 3F4 hypergeometric functions can be expanded in sums of pair products of 1F2 functions. In special cases, the 3F4 hypergeometric functions reduce to 2F3 functions. Further special cases allow one to reduce the 2F3 functions to 1F2 functions, and the sums to products of 0F1 (Bessel) and 1F2 functions. The class of hypergeometric functions with summation theorems are thereby expanded beyond those expressible as pair-products of 2F1 functions, 3F2 functions, and generalized Whittaker functions, into …

Tree-Equity And Environmental Justice Discourses Among Urban Forestry Professionals In Portland: Current Impacts And Future Implications, Axcelle Deone Bell

Dissertations and Theses

Urban tree equity is critical for addressing environmental justice and mitigating the effects of climate change in cities. This study investigates how professionals in Portland's urban forestry sector conceptualize and implement tree equity, focusing on equity and justice discourses. Through 27 semi-structured interviews with 29 professionals from government agencies and NGOs, I examine how these discourses shape decisions regarding tree planting, distribution, and maintenance, particularly in underserved communities. The analysis draws on political ecology, systems dynamics, and structuration theory to explore the systemic barriers perpetuating inequities in tree canopy distribution. The findings reveal tensions between different approaches to equity, such …

Forest Fires Increase Mid-Winter Snowmelt In The Western Oregon Cascades, Sage Ebel Jan 2025

Forest Fires Increase Mid-Winter Snowmelt In The Western Oregon Cascades, Sage Ebel

Dissertations and Theses

As the spatiotemporal overlap between burned forests, seasonal snow, extreme precipitation, and mid-winter warming continues to increase with climate change, it is critical we quantify the impacts of forest fires and rain-on-snow (ROS) on mid-winter snowmelt and snow-water resources. In the Pacific Northwest, the release of large volumes of meltwater to downstream receiving water from already vulnerable snowpacks can have catastrophic consequences. I show that forest fires doubled mid-winter snowmelt proportions as compared to unburned reference sites, using a novel network of snow monitoring and micrometeorological stations installed across an elevational and forest type gradient in a burned watershed in …

Integrative Approaches To Climate Resilience Planning: Application Of A Plan Evaluation Framework, Maulsri Jha Jan 2025

Integrative Approaches To Climate Resilience Planning: Application Of A Plan Evaluation Framework, Maulsri Jha

Dissertations and Theses

In the last two decades, urban governments have streamlined and prioritized the creation and implementation of climate resilience plans to cater to the communities' vulnerabilities. Existing research illustrates that there is a gap in understanding how, or if, empirical (evidence-based) data are incorporated into the design and implementation of such plans and the extent to which their inclusion impacts outcomes in terms of vulnerability reduction. There is also a gap in the systematic study of their outcomes in terms of community resilience, and whether equity and environmental justice are promoted as priorities.

The purpose of the research is to understand …

Prediction-Powered Inference For Clinical Trials, Pierre-Emmanuel Poulet, Maylis Tran, Sophie Tezenas Du Montcel, Bruno Dubois, Stanley Durrleman, Bruno M. Jedynak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prediction-powered inference (PPI) [1] and its subsequent development called PPI++ [2] provide a novel approach to standard statistical estimation leveraging machine learning systems to enhance unlabeled data with predictions. We use this paradigm in clinical trials. The predictions are provided by disease progression models, providing prognostic scores for all the participants as a function of baseline covariates. The proposed method would empower clinical trials by providing untreated digital twins of the treated patients while remaining statistically valid. The potential implications of this new estimator of the treatment effect in a two-arm randomized clinical trial (RCT) are manifold. First, it leads …

Wind And Topography Underlie Correlation Between Seasonal Snowpack, Mountain Glaciers, And Late-Summer Streamflow, Elijah N. Boardman, Andrew G. Fountain, Joseph W. Boardman, Thomas H. Painter, Evan W. Burgess, Laura Wilson, Adrian A. Harpold

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a warming climate, net mass loss from perennial snow and ice (PSI) contributes a temporary source of unsustainable streamflow. However, the role of topography and wind in mediating the streamflow patterns of deglaciating watersheds is unknown. We conduct lidar surveys of seasonal snow and PSI elevation change for five adjacent watersheds in the Wind River Range, Wyoming (WRR). Between 2019 and 2023, net mass loss from PSI is equivalent to ~10-36% of August-September streamflow. Across 338 manually classified PSI features >0.01 km2, glaciers contribute 68% of the total mass loss, perennial snowfields contribute 8%, rock glaciers contribute 1%, buried …

Direct Graphene Growth On Low-Alloy And Mild Steel Surfaces Controlled By Carbon Solubility And Surface Microstructural Transformations During Chemical Vapor Deposition, Kaleb Hood, Nam Nguyen, Sebastian Lara, Adan Velasquez, Samuel Olson, Yi Xia, Jun Jiao

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study demonstrates for the first time, graphene grown directly on the iron-rich surfaces of bulk 8620 low-alloy and 1018 mild steel by chemical vapor deposition, a key step toward developing thin graphene coatings with strong graphene-steel bonding. Low growth temperatures of 660 °C–680 °C, were used to manipulate the steel's carbon solubility, confining carbon diffusion and microstructural transformations to the surface regions, with the bulk relatively unchanged. For 1018, a growth temperature of 680 °C resulted in a multilayer graphene coating with 80 % coverage. The alloying elements in 8620 improved graphene formation by influencing the surface microstructure transformations …

Identifying The Effect Of Architecture Morphology On Wind Fields And Pm2.5 Dispersion At The Urban Block Scale Via A Combined Scheme, Bin Guo, Lu Li, Xiaowei Zhu, Zheng Wang, Miaoyi Chen, Lin Pei, Tengyue Guo

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study explores the potential of architecture morphology to mitigate PM2.5 pollution through enhanced urban ventilation. Despite the recognized influence of building designs on wind and air pollution distribution at the urban block scale, specific mechanisms remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we have developed an integrative approach combining in-situ observations, Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and statistical modeling. Here, CFD simulates the flow field and PM2.5 dispersion, using in-situ observations for turbulence model selection. GIS quantify architecture morphology parameters to establish accurate CFD boundary conditions, ensuring simulations reflect real-world conditions and precise …

Turbulent Structures In Coupled Wind-Wave Flows, Cerrina Mouchref Jan 2025

Turbulent Structures In Coupled Wind-Wave Flows, Cerrina Mouchref

Dissertations and Theses

The interactions between wind and waves in offshore environments are complex and have yet to be fully understood. Analyzing these interactions is motivated by an increased interest in climate modeling and the deployment of offshore construction, such as offshore wind farms. In this study, experiments are performed in a wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyze wind-wave interactions over various wave and wind speeds. The addition of the wave, a moving boundary, leads to the use of Reynolds triple decomposition in order to separate the turbulent and wave-phase coherent fluctuations. A curvilinear coordinate system was used to analyze …

Background Autistic people commonly have physical and mental health conditions. They also frequently experience barriers to accessing healthcare, contributing to problems identifying and treating health conditions. These factors may lead to increased and earlier morbidity and lower average life expectancy for autistic people. Health checks specifically designed for autistic people, incorporating adjustments to healthcare, may help to overcome these barriers and reduce health inequalities. This trial aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a primary care health check for autistic adults and explore factors related to implementation such as acceptability and feasibility of delivery. The trial is co-designed and …

Conceptualising Coercion In Child/Forced Marriage Through An Intersectional Lens: Narratives Of Survivors And Practitioners In The Us, Sundari Anitha, Manjusha Gupte

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the nature and forms of coercion in the forced marriage of minors in the US. We explore: (i) direct emotional or physical force exercised by parents which is commonly underpinned by dominant constructions of gender and sexuality, a well-rehearsed theme in existing scholarship; (ii) the hitherto unexamined role of intersecting socio-economic disadvantages in vitiating consent; and (iii) how state policies/practices create conducive contexts for child/forced marriage, which is elided in existing scholarship. In extending existing conceptualisations of coercion in child/forced marriage, we explicate the ‘total burden of coercion’ through a focus on the contexts within which consent …
