The proposal was based on principles of business education widely accepted in American, Asian, and European countries and on the results of the analysis of the Vietnamese educational system and its environment. It was revealed that, anywhere in the world, there is a vital need …

Madrona Movers: A Sociological Analysis Of A Work Group As A Process Of Harmony And Dissent, John Vance Cannucci May 1970

Madrona Movers: A Sociological Analysis Of A Work Group As A Process Of Harmony And Dissent, John Vance Cannucci

Dissertations and Theses

The research problem discussed in the thesis is generally concerned with the investigation of a group of men who work as furniture movers. The problem is focused on the dynamic interplay of status equality and status differentiation as contradictions that render harmony and dissension as common group denominators.

Three questions were asked. First, are there consistent ways of behaving while working as a furniture mover? Second, if consistent ways of behavior do exist, how are they related to the notions of status equality and status differentiation? Third, if this latter relationship should exist, can harmony and dissent be conceptualized as …

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is the only complete and unabridged English translation of Stepan Petrovich Krasheninnikov’s Opisanie Zemli Kamchatki (The Description of the Land of Kamchatka), first published in 1755 by the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. Krasheninnikov (1711-1755) was a member of the Second Bering Expedition (1733-1741), one of the most ambitious scientific expeditions of any age. Its purpose was sixfold: 1) to explore and map Siberia; 2) to establish whether Asia and America were separated by water; 3) to explore Kamchatka; 4) to chart all waters between Kamchatka, America and Japan; 5) to map the entire Arctic …

Hot Electron Injection Into Liquid Argon From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver, P. Kumbhare May 1970

Hot Electron Injection Into Liquid Argon From A Tunnel Cathode, Pavel Smejtek, David G. Onn, M. Silver, P. Kumbhare

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hot electrons from a tunnel cathode have been injected into liquid argon (99.998% pure) at 87°K. The current vs voltage characteristics indicate that the injected hot electrons thermalize very slowly, losing their energy only by elastic scattering processes and finally by capture by the dilute impurities. The deduced thermalization time and distance are very long compared with that in helium, where bubble formation is responsible for energy loss.

Non-Linearities In Galvanomagnetic Effects In Bismuth At Low Temperatures, David Lawrence Luce May 1970

Non-Linearities In Galvanomagnetic Effects In Bismuth At Low Temperatures, David Lawrence Luce

Dissertations and Theses

The magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient of two single crystals of bismuth have been measured at liquid helium temperatures. The purpose of the work was to investigate the non-linearities which had previously been observed in the longitudinal and Hall voltages as a function of current. In addition to continuous current measurements, a pulsed DC technique was used in an attempt to discriminate between the non-linear effects due to heating and a possible intrinsic current dependence of the magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient. The time dependence of both of these galvanomagnetic effects indicates that the rate of heat dissipation from the crystal into …

Dissertations and Theses

This research project was designed to test, directly, the effects of perceived professional authority on producing attitude change among high school sophomores. The study utilized a social psychological theoretical orientation to examine a specific aspect of socially mediated information, namely, persuasive communication as it is influenced by the source or communicator of the persuasive message, “Authority, as it has been defined in this study, includes two factors: (1) the prestige and (2) the credibility of the source. The two professions selected were that of a physician and a social worker. It was expected that the physician, by virtue of his …

Pear Polyphenolase, Mary Ellen Tracy May 1970

Pear Polyphenolase, Mary Ellen Tracy

Dissertations and Theses

Polyphenolases (O-diphenol: O₂ oxidoreductase E.C. 1.10.3.1) have been isolated from a wide variety of plant and animal sources. This work deals with the isolation and characterization of polyphenolase from a previously unreported source, Pyrus communis, the common pear, horticultural variety D'Anjou. The chronometric method of assay was used, in which the enzymic oxidation of the substrate, usually catechol, is coupled to the oxidation of ascorbic acid and the time required to oxidize a specific amount of substrate is noted as the time required to colorize an external startch-iodide indicator. Various methods of isolation and purification were attempted. After a suitable …

A Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Hyperbolic Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck Oct 1969

A Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Hyperbolic Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck

Dissertations and Theses

A study of the hyperbolic electrostatic electron mirror is presented. The focal properties of the mirror are determined both theoretically and experimentally. In the theoretical study the mirror field is formed between a positive hyperbolic potential surface and the negative asymptotic cone of half angle arctan 1:2 [square root of 2]. The focal properties are obtained from the solutions of the equations for the radial and axial motions of the electron in the mirror field. The analysis includes the effect of an axial aperture (for entrance and exit of electrons) in the positive surface. The paraxial values of focal length …

Dissertations and Theses

A general study of testing with special focus on, and analysis of, tests being used in the primary grades by selected cities; the controversy concerning aptitude and intelligence testing as it applies particularly to genetic factors and race; and the identification and selection of ideas which would be of value to a first grade teacher seeking diverse and unusual ways to discover abilities and aptitudes in first grade children. Study covers in detail some of the controversy about racial intelligence as it concerns black and white Americans starting with interpretations and controversies that occurred after World War I, and also …

Physical And Kinetic Properties Of Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase From Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, Craig David Taylor Aug 1969

Physical And Kinetic Properties Of Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase From Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, Craig David Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

Dihydroorotate (DRO) dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidation of DHO to orotate in the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway. This enzyme was originally isolated from a bacterium, Zymobacterium oroticum, which would ferment orotate as a sole source of energy. This adaptive catabolic enzyme, which catalyzes the reduction of orotate to DRO in an efficient pyridine nucleotide-linked reaction, has been extensively studied by several workers. Until recently, no study has been carried out on the enzyme which catalyzes the reaction in the biosynthetic direction. Preliminary studies have shown that the biosynthetic enzyme in Esherichia coli and a pseudomonad is not capable of reducing orotate to …

Cyclization Studies Involving The Synthesis Of 5-Substituted-1-Naphthol, Clark Keelock Chow

Dissertations and Theses

The γ-o-substituted-phenylparaconic acids were prepared by a method patterned after that of Fuson. These paraconic acids were prepared in good yield. A re-investigation of the Perkin and Fittig methods of preparing γ-phenylisocrotonic acid was carried out without success.

The synthesis of γ-o-halophenylisocrotonic acids by thermal, and catalyzed decarboxylation of γ-o-halophenylparaconic acid, have been carried out in good yield. An effective catalyst, optimum temperature and reaction period of decarboxylation of the γ-o-halophenylparaconic acids have been determined. Infrared absorptions have characterized the γ-o-halophenylisocrotonic acids formed to be in the stable trans form. …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Fluoride And Chloride Ions Upon The Activity Of Yeast Alcohol Dehydrogenase, Ellen J. Hannan

Dissertations and Theses

Very little is known about the effect of hydrofluoric acid and of the fluoride ion on enzyme systems. The purpose of this work was to determine the effect of hydrofluoric acid and of the fluoride ion on the enzyme, yeast alcohol dehydrogenase and to distinguish between the effect of the fluoride ion and of hydrofluoric acid. The rate of the enzyme reaction was followed spectrophotometrically at 340 mμ on the Cary 14 Model spectrophotometer according to the method of Racker. The data taken from the instrument recordings were plotted on two types of graphs, the Lineweaver-Burk plot and the Hanes …

Figure Painting In The High School: Experiments And Recommendations, E. Leonora Perron May 1969

Figure Painting In The High School: Experiments And Recommendations, E. Leonora Perron

Dissertations and Theses

My research problem was to experiment with four high school art classes in drawing and painting the figure, to draw conclusions about how they relate to working with the figure, and to recommend methods that appeared to be most successful in broadening viewpoints, developing skills and increasing interest and involvement in art. This problem was selected because teenage students, in the vast majority of cases, have great difficulty in drawing or painting figures and, therefore, strenuously avoid it.

I discovered that a subjective approach that recognizes personal feelings, along with one that requires close looking, seemed to get the most …

Verbal Accessibility And Authoritarian Family Ideology: A Study Of 50 Graduate Social Work Students And Their Spouses, Linda Louise Metz May 1969

Verbal Accessibility And Authoritarian Family Ideology: A Study Of 50 Graduate Social Work Students And Their Spouses, Linda Louise Metz

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is the fourth in a series of empirical investigations concerned with symbolic interaction in marriage. Its basic assumption is that personal predispositions of marital partners as well as the social context of their marriage influences marital intimacy particularly the partner's readiness to communicate verbally with each other about important attitudes and feelings.

Fifty married graduate students attending Portland State University School of Social Work and their spouses comprised the sample. The subjects responded to three instruments: (1) a personality scale (Authoritarian Family Ideology – AFI) developed by Jane Loevinger, (2) a measure of verbal accessibility (VA), and (3) …

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson May 1969

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

The directional correlation of the 346-136 Kev gamma-gamma cascade in Ta¹⁸¹ was measured using the delayed coincidence method with a source of Hf¹⁸¹ in 27 N HF. The contributions to the composite delayed coincidence spectrum of the interfering 133-482 Kev and 133-346 Kev cascades were removed by the subtraction from this spectrum of appropriate 133-482 Kev pure delayed coincidence data. The extracted 346-136 Kev coincidence data then yielded the correlation coefficients A₂₂ = 0.190±0.011 and A₄₄. = -0.025±0.024 that are consistent with the established spin sequence 5/2(E2)9/2(M1 + E2)7/2 and with an admixture of 16.2%±1. 2% E2 radiation in the …
