Key Issues For Speed Safety Cameras: Results From A Semi-Structured Interview Of Agencies In The United States, Sophia Semensky, Miguel Figliozzi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Speed safety cameras (SSCs) are a recognized countermeasure for targeting speeding-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities. SSCs have been introduced in various cities and are steadily expanding in use both in the U.S. and internationally. The extensive literature review of domestic and international documents and research papers reveals that the U.S. has been comparatively slow to adopt SSCs, with some other countries implementing these systems more extensively and earlier. Many local agencies are eager to learn SSC best practices and implementation lessons within the U.S. context. In this research, key issues related to SSC implementation are explored through semi-structured interviews with …

Detecting Eigenvectors Of An Operator That Are Near A Specified Subspace, David Darrow, Jeffrey S. Ovall
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In modeling quantum systems or wave phenomena, one is often interested in identifying eigenstates that approximately carry a specified property; scattering states approximately align with incoming and outgoing traveling waves, for instance, and electron states in molecules often approximately align with superpositions of simple atomic orbitals. These examples—and many others—can be formulated as the following eigenproblem: given a selfadjoint operator L on a Hilbert space H and a closed subspace W ⊂ H, can we identify all eigenvectors of L that lie approximately in W? We develop an approach to answer this question efficiently, with a userdefined tolerance and range …

Background: Autistic people face multiple barriers to health care. To recognize specific barriers in a standardized way, autistic people, health care providers, and researchers need a suitable measure. The Academic Autistic Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education successfully developed the Barriers to Healthcare Checklist— Short Form (BHC-SF). It remains unclear whether (1) a German version of the BHC-SF performs well in terms of psychometric properties and (2) the BHC-SF consists of multiple constructs (i.e., assessing structural validity). Methods: We created a translated and culturally adapted version of the 17-item BHC-SF and used it with 345 autistic people in Germany. Psychometric …

The Ladies' Home Journal: Dormant Seeds Of The Feminine Mystique Pre-Wwii, Isis Santos Villaça
University Honors Theses
At the turn of the 20th century, magazines were becoming increasingly available to the middle class. Throughout the 1890–1930s, the industry put forth an entire new iteration of publications that came to be popular with female readers. One of the most successful publications from this period, The Ladies' Home Journal, distinguished itself through its strong editorial presence on the page. The editors of the Ladies' Home Journal intended to create a "traditional" female identity that reflected domesticity in the journal, which countered the rising notions of the New Woman. Simultaneously, the publication aimed to create an educational product with …

Electronic nicotine delivery system manufacturers, such as Charlie's Holdings Inc., ECBlend, Outlaw, and NicRiver, have recently introduced nicotine analogs, such as 6-methyl nicotine, 6-MN ("Metatine"), and nicotinamide, NA ("Nixamide," "Nixodine," or "Nixotin-free base and salt") in products to circumvent the U.S. FDA's premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) requirements. Marketed as "tobacco-free," "PMTA-exempt," or "FDA-approved," these compounds now appear in oral nicotine pouches and disposable bars/vapes from brands such as Outlaw Dip, Kumi-Six, SBX, Katchmi, and Spree Bar under proprietary labels including "NoNic6," "Metatine," or "NIC-SAFE." These products often mimic the appeal of conventional nicotine delivery systems, with extensive use of …

Indigenous Peoples experience severe health inequities rooted in experiences of colonization. Calls for strengths-based, culturally grounded research and practice to redress these harms continue to grow. This systematic review assesses how Indigenous "culture" has been quantified in research across the globe over a 10-year span. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched four databases (2013-2023) for peer-reviewed, English-language articles featuring quantitative measures of Indigenous culture as a positive/protective factor. Data were extracted via a double coding system to assess cultural domains, operationalization strategies, and sociodemographic characteristics of reviewed studies. We reviewed 279 records and identified 461 measures, 289 of which were unique. …

Carver, Kafka, And Woolf On Re-Enchanting Modernity, Zachary Davis
Carver, Kafka, And Woolf On Re-Enchanting Modernity, Zachary Davis
University Honors Theses
Though removed from the time of the modernists, Raymond Carver shares similar interests with Woolf and Kafka in his late century story "Cathedral," as he investigates art's capacity for creating meaning, or "re-enchanting." While Carver investigates the function of art in a chaotic world, his story does not feature a central artist figure or a hierarchical social structure surrounding the artistic process, but rather an organic artistic experience which creates community among the characters. In this way, "Cathedral" can be seen as a mediation between Woolf's and Kafka's distinct, if not opposing, reactions to Matthew Arnold's prophecy that "most of …

Analysis Of Novel Cannabis Products Labeled As Containing Thc-Jd, Kaelas R. Munger, Carlton C. B. Bone, Killian M. Anreise, Robert M. Strongin
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Objective:
THC-JD (tetrahydrocannabioctyl) is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid with an eight-carbon C3 side chain, present in only trace amounts in hemp, requiring synthesis for commercial use. It has been promoted as potentially 19 times more potent than delta-9-THC, consistent with enhanced CB1 receptor affinities for cannabinoids with 7-8 carbon C3 side chains. While one peer-reviewed report identified THC-JD (tetrahydrocannabioctyl) in Japanese online products, an anecdotal report from the U.S. suggests mislabeling. Method: To inform regulatory efforts and consumer awareness and to address these discrepancies, this study chemically analyzed five U.S. commercial cannabis vape products marketed as containing THC-JD. Results: Utilizing GC-MS …
Pressed For Time: The Role Of Time Pressure And Attentional Awareness On The Mental Health Of Employed Informal Dementia Caregivers, Kate Bishop
University Honors Theses
Informal caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD) experience increased time demands and poorer well-being, especially when caregiving is combined with paid employment. Subjective feelings of high time pressure, which include feeling rushed and short on time, relate to poorer self-reported measures of mental health more than objective task load. Attentional awareness is one of the fundamental components of mindfulness alongside nonjudgmental acceptance; it has been linked with more optimal mental health and feelings of having enough time. This cross-sectional study examined whether higher levels of perceived time pressure would relate to poorer self-reported mental health functioning and …

Inertia Versus Adaptation: Relational Resilience In Buyer-Supplier Relationships Facing Extreme Disruption, Jordan M. Barker, Anne E. Dohmen, Carlos Mena
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
This research introduces the concept of relational resilience, which reflects the dynamic capacity of a buyer–supplier relationship to absorb external shocks and continue its core function of exchange. Guided by structural inertia theory (SIT), the research explores how relationship age, exchange volume, and multiplexity contribute to relational resilience across both stable periods and times of extreme disruption. Using a large-scale panel dataset of buyer–supplier relationships and the COVID-19 pandemic as an exogenous shock, the findings reveal that relational resilience is enhanced by all three mechanisms, but extreme disruptions lessen the protective value of relationship age and exchange volume while strengthening …

Using Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Continuum Modeling To Evaluate Drought Tolerance In The Urban Environment, Md Jahidul Islam, Samantha Hartzell
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
Global climate change expansion in the past few years is affecting the urban environment in the Pacific Northwest. The Mediterranean climate, combined with climate change, is making conditions more severe for plant function and ecosystem services through increasing soil moisture limitation. As a result, identifying the changes in plant physiological processes caused by soil moisture limitation is important for conservation and restoration initiatives.
This research uses the Photo3 model to quantify gas exchange, plant water use, and water use efficiency under urban environmental conditions in Portland, Oregon. Meteorological data required for the model simulation were obtained from the weather station …

Using A Place-Based Harms Typology To Inform Community Practice And Research: Illustrative Cases And Contexts, Jason Sawyer, Greer A. Hamilton, Amie Thurber, Amy Krings
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Place-based harms comprise direct threats to community wellbeing within the spaces where people live. These harms, rooted in structural and cultural violence, are codified in policies and programs that contribute to poverty, homelessness, over-policing and surveillance, and environmental injustices. This paper argues, although community practitioners are needed to work alongside communities impacted by place-based harms, there are critical tensions and tradeoffs embedded within the place-based strategies. To illustrate this, we draw from the Contested Places Typology and present cases that highlight key tensions, tradeoffs, and nuances associated with its six approaches: (1) Reparation, (2) Remembrance, (3) Regeneration, (4) Resistance, (5) …

Madwoman Makings: The Modern Girl As An Object Of Fear And Fascination In Unno Jūza’S "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag", Eliza Joy Mortimer
University Honors Theses
This thesis argues that Unno Jūza's 1937 short story "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag" uses the sensational tropes of deviant detective fiction to both stage and interrogate interwar Japanese anxieties around gender, science, and modernity. Focusing on the figure of Mrs. Hirumi—a scientifically empowered and sexually assertive female plastic surgeon who dismembers and cryogenically preserves her husband—the author reads her as a radical iteration of the Japanese Modern Girl character. By drawing on scholarship on deviant detective fiction, imperial modernity, and Kazue Harada's concept of (re)productivity, this thesis demonstrates how the short story both reproduces misogynistic criminological discourse and unsettles heteronormative …

Viruses are the most pervasive biological entities on Earth and they profoundly shape host ecology and evolution. However, for many microbial lineages, knowledge of their viromes remains limited, especially for those inhabiting remote environments, including deep-sea ecosystems. Here, we leverage one of the most extensively cultivated and genomically characterized archaeal lineages, the Thermococcales, to identify novel viral genomes. By utilizing CRISPR spacers from isolates and spacer arrays reconstructed from metagenomes, we mined mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in 1,172 publicly available and newly sequenced hydrothermal vent metagenomic datasets. Comparative genomics and identification of viral hallmark proteins revealed 620 viral genomes across …

We quantify volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from indoor surface swabs and portable air cleaner (PAC) filters collected in a home 30 days after the 2025 Los Angeles wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires. We calculate emissions for 17 fire-relevant compounds. Surface emissions exceeded those of clean controls, and emissions from a windowsill in a room without a PAC were ∼15× and ∼2× higher for benzene and toluene, respectively, than rates reported in the literature for comparable materials unaffected by smoke/soot. Particle filters installed in PACs at the start of the fire emitted aromatics at rates comparable to those reported in a …

Beyond Rationality: The Role Of Emotions In Communicative Planning, Minji Cho
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The impact of emotional dynamics has been overlooked within the field of planning. Traditional communicative planning theory, rooted in Habermas’ model of communication, typically propose that emotions should be managed to facilitate rational discussions that lead to logical agreements. Conversely, some research contends that emotions are not illogical or hazardous elements to be restrained during deliberation; instead, they are a topic requiring thorough investigation to create improved public forums. We investigate this tension by analysing facework during a land-use dispute at at the Gongjin Elementary School site in Seoul, South Korea. Our analysis reveals that facework not only impedes the …

Nonenzymatic Glucose Biosensor Based On Selective Reduction Of Silver Ions, Maryam Sarlak, Shankar B. Rananavare
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
A nonenzymatic conductivity-based glucose biosensor, reported here, designed for potential noninvasive measurement in accessible biofluids such as saliva, sweat, and tears. The sensor exploits a classic Tollens’ silvering process that deposits metallic silver on a sensitized surface via a quantitative, selective reduction of silver ions by glucose. Of the two surface sensitization methods used, the self-assembled bifunctional thiol/silane surfactant yields a more stable and sensitive sensor than tin(II) chloride. The conductometric sensor consists of two spiral interdigitated silver electrodes fabricated by lithography and wet etching. The sensor impedance changes after selective metallic silver deposition between the electrodes. The sensor exhibits …

This paper evaluates Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) and Dynamic Compaction (DC) methods for enhancing soft soil in the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project. Targeted interventions were required for the stratified soil profile, consisting of liquefiable sand (3–5 m thick) over soft clay (SPT ∼5): dynamic compaction for densifying the sand layer and soil-cement piles for stabilizing the underlying clay. Post-treatment Standard Penetration Test (SPT) values indicated that DC significantly improved the sand layer (SPT rose to 15–25) while SCP effectively strengthened the clay (SPT increased to 8–12). The Tongi-to-Uttara section (CP01) simultaneously addressed liquefaction concerns and settlement issues through …
