Lingual Discrimination Of Two Normal-Speaking Populations, Janice Ellen Gould Nesbitt
Dissertations and Theses
The present investigation was undertaken to collect normative data on a teenage population and a young adult population in order to assess tongue sensitivity regarding the identification of various geometric shapes. The research, was conducted to answer the following questions:
1. Is there a significant difference between a teenage group and a young adult group regarding lingual discrimination?
2. What is the range and variability between and within the two groups?
3. Is the teenage group significantly better than the elementary school age group previously tested by Weiss (1973b)?
There were 50 normal-speaking subjects in the teenage group ranging in …
Infection Of Smallmouth Bass And Goldfish By Two Species Of Saprolegnia, Cheryl A. Mcginley
Infection Of Smallmouth Bass And Goldfish By Two Species Of Saprolegnia, Cheryl A. Mcginley
Dissertations and Theses
This study consisted of several experiments designed to compare the ability of two species of fungi, Saprolegnia ferax and S. parasitica to grow on two species of fish, smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) and goldfish (Carassius auratus), and to determine the criteria necessary for the development of these infections.
The results indicate that water in the fish tanks must be slightly acid (pH 6), warm (22°C), nonmoving, and that the fish must be wounded in order for fungal infection to occur. Cool water (18°C) and moving water, caused by aeration and filtration, are detrimental to fungal colony …
A Comparison Between Sources Of Student Anti-Hunting Sentiment And Wildlife Information Sources Of A Sample Of Oregon Adults, Ronald E. Shay
A Comparison Between Sources Of Student Anti-Hunting Sentiment And Wildlife Information Sources Of A Sample Of Oregon Adults, Ronald E. Shay
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the various sources of information utilized by a sample of the Oregon adult population to gain information and ideas about the wildlife resource. The results were compared to those of a study of college and university students and their sources of information that gave them anti-hunting attitudes.
The basic question posed was: What sources of information are most commonly utilized by a sample of Oregon’s population in obtaining ideas and information concerning the wildlife resource and do the proportions of various sources utilized compare with those indicated by college students as sources of anti-hunting sentiments?
Additional questions …
Differential Measurement Of A Language Concept Presented Via Video Tape Playback To First Grade Students, Richard Warren Trullinger
Differential Measurement Of A Language Concept Presented Via Video Tape Playback To First Grade Students, Richard Warren Trullinger
Dissertations and Theses
Educational television began in 1932 at the State University of Iowa. Until 1952, the potential of its contributions to education were not fully recognized. In 1952, however, the Federal Communication Commission created non-commercial television station. From that point in time, educational television has mushroomed.
This study tested the hypothesis: At least 80 percent of a given first grade population will respond accurately to the post-testing of a language concept, after the concept has been presented to them via a video tape playback using puppetry as the teaching method. In essence, the study was designed to determine whether or not an …

The Value Of Color Systems In Education, Shirley Jo Brehm
The Value Of Color Systems In Education, Shirley Jo Brehm
Dissertations and Theses
Color is with us everywhere, all the time. It is an integral part of our existence. Sensitivity to color and awareness of color's physical and psychological qualities is undeveloped in the normal, average human being. What can be done about this? Where can it be done? The answers to these two questions form the basis for this thesis. Color awareness as part of visual education and environmental sensitivity can be taught and should be taught in every educational institution. The key to BUCcessful instruction is informed, knowledgeable, color sensitive teachers and the exposure of students to workable color systems. Color …
Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons
Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons
Dissertations and Theses
Present-day builders of harpsichords disagree as to the use of iron or carbon-steel wire in their attempt to duplicate the tonal qualities of the early 16th century instruments. The variations in tone produced by vibrating iron and steel wires may be due, at least in part, to differences in their decay characteristics. A wire was set into vibration by placing a section in a magnetic field and passing a variable-frequency alternating current through it. A condition of resonance was established by appropriately selecting frequencies, lengths, and tensions that would simultaneously satisfy the relationship: fr = n/2L(T/p)1/2. Then measurements of decay …
The Politics Of Education -- An Analysis Of Selected Cases And Controversies In American Education, Lawrence Robert Stoffel
The Politics Of Education -- An Analysis Of Selected Cases And Controversies In American Education, Lawrence Robert Stoffel
Dissertations and Theses
This study compiles a series of cases and controversies in American education, from the popularization of public education in the mid-1800's to the present, and then reviews them to determine scholarly political aspects, common themes, and trends. It then applies the identified themes to a model of “the school as a responsive political system” fashioned after David Easton's "Dynamic Response Model of a Political System” to demonstrate the operative nature of the themes.
The paper reviews the plight of Negro education in Alabama after the Civil War until 1901. It discusses accommodation in the realm of education as the United …

Interaction Patterns In The Campground, Dennis Lee Rockwood
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this project was to examine interaction patterns in various campground settings and to elaborate on camping literature which has suggested that the campground is a social event with high rates of interaction. In exploring this phenomenon, this report utilized observational techniques to document the temporal, spatial, familiarity, numerical, and behavioral dimensions of the observed interactions.
The data suggested that young adults and middle-aged persons were observed to be involved in, and initiated the highest proportions of, interactions. In general, males displayed far greater proportions of initiations than females. The highly developed campground exhibited higher proportions and rates …

Optimization Of Single- And Double-Flash Cycles And Space Heating Systems In Geothermal Engineering, Talal Hussein Hassoun
Dissertations and Theses
Two different problems of optimization in the utilization of geothermal energy are presented: First, the thermodynamic optimization for a geothermal power plant using a single- or double-flash process is considered; in this analysis, the optimum flash temperature giving the maximum power output is determined. Second, an economic optimization for space heating systems using geothermal energy is developed to obtain operating conditions for which the total (capital and operating) cost is a minimum.
Both graphical and analytical methods are used in the thermodynamic optimization to determine the optimum flash temperature. The graphical method is based on thermodynamic data provided by an …

A Study Of The Physiological Factors Affecting The Biological Conversion Of Arsenite To Arsenate, Shirley E. Phillips
A Study Of The Physiological Factors Affecting The Biological Conversion Of Arsenite To Arsenate, Shirley E. Phillips
Dissertations and Theses
Although arsenic is ubiquitous in the environment, certain forms of arsenic are added deliberately in ever increasing quantities. The addition of large quantities of the trivalent inorganic form (arsenite) could pose a serious hazard because of the toxicity of this form explicable in terms of its action of sulfhydryl containing enzymes and/or coenzymes. In the environment B.rsenite is rapidly converted to arsenate (the pentavalent inorganic form). Since a biological explanation for the oxidation of arsenite to arsenate was available only for cattle dips (a unique environment), this study was undertaken to examine sewage for the presence of arsenite oxidizing bacteria. …

Gaussian Light Beams In Inhomogeneous Media, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Vector wave solutions are obtained for the propagation of beams of light in media having slow spatial variations of the gain, loss, or index of refraction. The formalism developed here is applicable to a wide range of problems, and an exa mple considered in detail is the propagation of off-axis beams in lenslike laser materials and optical waveguides. A procedure is also described for the diagnosis of localized dielectric inhomogeneities such as plasmas by means of Gaussian laser beams.

Hot Electron Injection Into Dense Argon, Nitrogen, And Hydrogen, Pavel Smejtek, M. Silver, K. S. Dy, David G. Onn
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Hot electrons have been injected into very dense argon, nitrogen, and hydrogen gases and liquids. The current‐voltage characteristics are experimentally determined for densities (N) of argon, nitrogen, and hydrogen ranging from about 10²⁰ to 10²² cm⁻³ and applied fields (E) ranging from about 10 to 10⁴ V cm⁻¹. The argon data show a square root E∕N dependence of the current. The nitrogen and hydrogen data show a complicated dependence of the current on E∕N due to the rapid thermalization in the region of the image potential of the injected electrons through inelastic collision processes not present in argon. A hydrodynamic‐two‐fluid …
