A Methodology For Determining Mass Movement Susceptibility For Land-Use Planning, Vern Walter Cimmery Oct 1976

A Methodology For Determining Mass Movement Susceptibility For Land-Use Planning, Vern Walter Cimmery

Dissertations and Theses

Land-use planning takes into consideration geologic hazards in order to protect both life and property. One type of geologic hazard is mass movement. Mass movement is a collective term for the downslope movement of mass units of debris e.g., bedrock, soil, and subsurface material, resulting from the influence of gravity and involving transporting media such as ice, snow, water, and air. As population increases, further pressures are placed on existing land use. Many areas once considered unsuitable for development due to steep slope or other physical characteristics are now experiencing problems. These areas, due to their physical characteristics, can be …

Analytic Modeling Of Gain‐Switched Lasers. Ii. Laser Amplifiers, Lee W. Casperson Oct 1976

Analytic Modeling Of Gain‐Switched Lasers. Ii. Laser Amplifiers, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The pulse transfer characteristics of gain‐switched laser amplifiers are investigated analytically. New closed‐form solutions have been obtained including arbitrary space‐ and time‐dependent pump distributions. The general results are specialzied to the important cases of uniform and traveling‐wave excitation. Input‐pulse shapes considered include step functions, practial oscillator output pulses, and also the inherent spontaneous‐emission noise. The results lead to improved models for pulse amplifiers and mirrorless traveling‐wave lasers. By proper choice of pump characteristics arbitrary output‐pulse waveforms can be synthesized.

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe Jul 1976

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the work of William Dunbar, a sixteenth century Scottish poet, in order to demonstrate that he is not, as he is often styled, a Scottish Chaucerian. It makes an analysis of the chronological occurrence of forms and themes in his poetry which indicates that his work can be divided into three periods: (1) an initial period in which his work deals with traditional matter and forms; (2) a second period in which he develops a distinctly personal poetic voice; and (3) a final period in which he perfects this personal voice and then relinquishes it for a …

A Comparative Study Of Aristotle's Poetics And Ezra Pound's Abc Of Reading, Michael P. Hagensick Jun 1976

A Comparative Study Of Aristotle's Poetics And Ezra Pound's Abc Of Reading, Michael P. Hagensick

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is a comparative study of Aristotle's Poetics and Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading to discover and determine values in literature, especially poetry, which reflect on the nature and the manifestations of human communication. I feel that scholars in the field of communication can benefit personally and academically from exposure to those poets who have expressed themselves on the reasons or the manners in which people communicate. To pursue this question requires the use of a guide to poetry, a method by which I can learn to recognize a poem on sight; so that when it comes to discourse …

Assessment Of Hearing Sensitivity By Use Of The Acoustic Reflex In The Geriatric Population, Donna Elvira Gilham May 1976

Assessment Of Hearing Sensitivity By Use Of The Acoustic Reflex In The Geriatric Population, Donna Elvira Gilham

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the SPAR test (Sensitivity Prediction by the Acoustic Reflex) on a sample of older adults who professed negative otologic histories. Twenty-seven subjects, ranging in age from sixty-four to eighty-three years of age (54 ears) were ultimately chosen as subjects. A young adult group, ranging in age from eighteen to thirty years of age, with normal audiometric hearing levels served as controls. Reflex threshold levels were obtained using 500 Hz., 1000 Hz., and 2000 Hz. pure tones and noise stimuli. Assessment of hearing loss was calculated on the difference between …

An Exploratory Study Concerning Reasons Given For Termination Of Provision Of Foster Care, Linda Ann Nelson Mar 1976

An Exploratory Study Concerning Reasons Given For Termination Of Provision Of Foster Care, Linda Ann Nelson

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this practicum is to determine reasons given by former foster parents for their termination of provision of foster care.

Research was completed through a survey of the literature in the field of roster care and through inquiries with personnel currently working with foster care programs in Columbia and Multnomah Counties. Utilizing the concerns of the personnel and issues raised in the literature, a questionnaire was developed which was intended specifically for former roster families currently residing in Columbia County. 48.9 percent of the questionnaires were returned.

The results showed that fifty percent of the foster families who …

An Exploratory Study Of Runaway Female Adolescents In A Residential Treatment Center, Mary E. Cook, Stan Jasper Mar 1976

An Exploratory Study Of Runaway Female Adolescents In A Residential Treatment Center, Mary E. Cook, Stan Jasper

Dissertations and Theses

If correctional institutions are to function according to established criteria, that is, to "correct" the deviant behavior of juvenile delinquents, then one obvious requirement is to have continuous contact with that individual over a period of time. This research project is one attempt to study runaways from the juvenile delinquent girls institution. This study specifically focuses on what factors influence a girl to run away and what factors encourage her to stay at Villa St. Rose.

Both researchers discovered in working at Villa St. Rose that one the biggest obstacles for the treatment program was the number of runaways that …

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen Feb 1976

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the significant gun control legislation enacted in the United States, and the movement to enact it. It is a contention of this thesis that sentiment favoring gun control comes essentially from urban areas which are most remote from America's frontier heritage, and the common usage of firearms. Sentiment opposing gun control, on the other hand, comes primarily from the West and South which are the areas nearest the frontier heritage. The popularity of firearms in the United States is also due, in large measure, to the pioneer background of this nation. This thesis also contends that firearms …

A Historical Analysis Of The Traditional Japanese Decision-Making Process In Contrast With The U.S. System And Implications For Intercultural Deliberations, Shoji Mitarai

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research is to (1) describe and analyze the different methods used by Japanese and by U.S. persons to reach agreement in small group deliberations, (2) discover the depth of commitment and personal involvement with these methods by tracing their historical beginnings and (3) draw implications from (1) and (2) as to probability of success of current problem solving deliberations involving members of both groups.

In the Yayoi period of Japanese history (250 B.C. - 300 A.D.), a special set of circumstances in both the ecological and cultural sphere encouraged the consensus type of decision-making and commensurate …

The Proposed Community Involvement Activities Of The Multnomah County Department Of Public Safety : A Descriptive Study, Vertis Williams, Leearthur Madison

Dissertations and Theses

Serving in the capacity of Sheriff's interns during the time the decision had been made to implement Neighborhood Team Policing, the writers of this study propose to participate in evaluating the impact and effectiveness of the project. However, due to the size and complexity of such a task--and the time restrictions placed upon completion of this study--the boundaries of this research will be limited to those of providing descriptive data on the performance of project activities as they relate to the achievement of the objectives of Goal 1 of the Neighborhood Team Policing Project: Improved police-community mutual involvement and problem-solving.
