The Maximization Of Organizational Resource Utilization, Erich Pfeifer
The Maximization Of Organizational Resource Utilization, Erich Pfeifer
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the relationship that exists between organizational structure and levels of organizational resource utilization. Literature establishes that levels of organizational resource utilization can be impacted by the usefulness of the structures designed to facilitate their access and use.
A case study was developed to demonstrate these principles in action. It focused on one organization, Portland State University, and the utilization of one resource, film and video in classroom teaching. These films and videos, as previously acquired resources, represent the learning potential they bring to students at Portland State University. The structures that connect instructors with this resource were …

Signs Of Popular Ecology In The Ecotourism Landscape Near Tikal National Park, Guatemala, Michael Mooradian Lupro
Signs Of Popular Ecology In The Ecotourism Landscape Near Tikal National Park, Guatemala, Michael Mooradian Lupro
Dissertations and Theses
Ecotourism is a common conservation and development strategy in the Maya, Forest region. New sites of ecotourism consumption, such as El Rematé near Tikal National Park in Guatemala, are developing in response to consumer demand for budget accommodations in this attractive cultural and natural setting. This study analyzes new ecotourism infrastructure developments in El Rematé for signs that this tourism draws on ecological imagery as expressed in popular media - or popular ecology - not on the natural and cultural ecology of the region that is the target of international conservation efforts. Analysis suggests that ecotourism entrepreneurs who effectively associate …

Diy, Community, And Technology: The Impact Of Technology On Community Cohesion In The Portland Indie Rock Production Culture, Jeffrey Ross London
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the present study was to determine whether differences exist between those steeped in the practice of the use of the computer in music production and those reared in a mostly analog environment. In addition, this study aimed to develop theory concerning who may be in or out of the technology revolution in music. The areas of inquiry included the artists' situated perceptions of the quality, production aesthetic, and community role of the computer.
Subjects were selected using a snowball sample of those producers with an interest in the topic area. As the research developed, subjects were chosen …
Bend Community Survey: Fall 1999, Deborah A. Howe, William A. Rabiega
Bend Community Survey: Fall 1999, Deborah A. Howe, William A. Rabiega
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The City of Bend enters the new millennium following an unprecedented decade of development. Population was estimated at 47,635 in May of 1999. The city more than doubled its area with its 1998 annexations. Many public and private projects were built during the past decade, and many are in planning stages or under construction at this time. Given this history, it is prudent for city government to determine how well Bend’s citizens feel public services are performing, how they feel about communication with their government, and what their concerns are about Bend’s future course.
This document reports a community survey …

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
The Portland Community Land Trust (PCLT) is a newly formed nonprofit organization implementing a community-based model for providing affordable housing in the city of Portland, Oregon. In the initial research for this project it became evident that the PCLT needed an outreach strategy in order to become a successful community-based organization. Students enrolled in the 1999-2000 Master's of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop at Portland State University spend six months developing the following outreach strategy under the direction of the PCLT Interim Board.
In the process of community research and analysis, the most substantial discoveries made were in the nature …

Often heard in the mass media and at cocktail parties is that Americans have a love affair with their automobiles. While it may be true that many Americans do love their cars, it is equally true that what they love most about them is the instant mobility that they provide. Car sharing is a concept that addresses the reality ofour need and desire for mobility with a growing desire to be economically and environmentally sensitive and sensible. Car sharing provides access to automobiles without the costs associated with ownership.
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the impacts of …
Power Self-Regulation In Double-Pass High-Gain Laser Amplifiers, Lee W. Casperson, Janet M. Casperson
Power Self-Regulation In Double-Pass High-Gain Laser Amplifiers, Lee W. Casperson, Janet M. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Double-pass laser amplifiers can provide automatic passive regulation of the power in an optical signal. This regulation can significantly reduce the amplitude noise on a laser beam that is intended as a continuous wave light source. Analytic expressions are derived to describe the optical-noise-reduction region of double-pass amplifier operation and the dependence of the self-regulation properties on gain, saturation, and mirror reflectivity.
Survey Of Support For And Opposition To English Only Legislation In The Greater Portland Region, Leah Ann Woodruff
Survey Of Support For And Opposition To English Only Legislation In The Greater Portland Region, Leah Ann Woodruff
Dissertations and Theses
The politics of language is something that all ESL instructors will deal with at some point in their careers. The English Only Movement is an important part of the current trend in language legislation. As ESL instructors we need to understand what motivates people in our communities to support or oppose such legislation, so that we can better prepare our students to operate in that community. Many articles have been written on the English Only Movement, but the vast majority of them are from a historical or politically partisan view. Little research has been done in regard to why this …

Dissertations and Theses
The paintings, sculpture and digital prints presented for this thesis explore language as a field where sense and non-sense coexist With my focus on the activity of deciphering, both literally and metaphorically, I have examined the play between word as image and image as word. What poetry lies embedded in the strange physicality of familiar graphic marks? What is the pleasure we find, as the poet Robert Pinsky suggests, in language only partly understood?
Following the lead of the Surrealists, who used the camera to investigate the paradoxical notion of reality as a sign, I amassed a collection of newspaper …

Molecular Interaction Between Nitric Oxide And Ryanodine Receptors Of Skeletal And Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Guy Salama, Elizaveta V. Menshikova, Jonathan J. Abramson
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In striated muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is the major storage compartment of intracellular Ca2+ that controls cytosolic free Ca2+ (Cai) and developed force by sequestering and releasing Ca2+ during each contraction. Ca2+ release from the SR occurs through high-conductance Ca2+ release channels or ryanodine receptors (RyR), which are regulated by various signaling processes. Over the last 15 years, there has been a growing consensus that critical sulfhydryl sites on RyRs can be oxidized and reduced, respectively, to open and close the release channels. The pharmacological actions of various classes of sulfhydryl reagents have demonstrated the existence of hyperreactive thiols …
A Comparison Of The Child Directed Speech Of Traditional Dads With That Of Stay-At-Home Dads, Judith Nancarrow Barr
A Comparison Of The Child Directed Speech Of Traditional Dads With That Of Stay-At-Home Dads, Judith Nancarrow Barr
Dissertations and Theses
The speech that mothers use when addressing adults has consistently been shown to exhibit modifications when the conversation partner is their language-learning child. Fathers adopt similar changes in the structural linguistic aspects of their Child Directed Speech (CDS), but their patterns of discourse remain more of a challenge for the child. This contrast in parental language is thought to be beneficial to the language-learning child: a mother's language focuses on the child as a conversation partner, whilst a father's more demanding language is considered a "Bridge" between the mother's and that of adults in the outside world. With family roles …
The Long-Term Viability Of A Zero-Valent Iron Permeable Reactive Barrier, Stuart Cowburn
The Long-Term Viability Of A Zero-Valent Iron Permeable Reactive Barrier, Stuart Cowburn
Dissertations and Theses
Zero-valent iron permeable reactive barriers (PRB's) hold significant potential as a tool for groundwater remediation. Uncertainties remain, however, as to the effective lifetime of Fe0 barrier technology under full-scale operational conditions. Potential limits on barrier lifetime include reductions in permeability due to clogging by precipitates and oxidation of all Fe0 prior to the exhaustion of the contaminant source.
A 46 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 7.3 m deep Fe0 PRB was installed at the US Coast Guard Support Center, Elizabeth City, NC, in June 1996. The barrier was designed to remediate groundwater principally contaminated with Cr(VI) …

Variation Of Constitutive Model Formulation On Analytical Cake Filtration Models, Scott A. Wells
Variation Of Constitutive Model Formulation On Analytical Cake Filtration Models, Scott A. Wells
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Constitutive properties are required to model porosity, effective stress, porewater pressure, or permeability during cake filtration. By using an analytical cake filtration model based on Tiller (1975) with various constitutive property formulations, predictions of effective stress, permeability, and porosity distributions in a filter cake can be made. This analytical approach was only valid when spatially average values of porosity and pressure differential were constant over time. Several different constitutive property formulations were compared to data of effective stress and permeability as a function of porosity for kaolin clay in water. Also the spatial distribution of porosity in a filter cake …
The Presentation Of Gender-Based Sexuality Scripts In Sex Education Films, Patricia Anne Drew
The Presentation Of Gender-Based Sexuality Scripts In Sex Education Films, Patricia Anne Drew
Dissertations and Theses
The manifest purpose of sex education films is to transmit factual information about sexuality to schoolchildren. However, films additionally contain covert messages informing students of proper and improper sexual roles. Films can reinforce patriarchal gender-differentiation within the sexual realm or, alternately, films can promote commensurate, non-patriarchal gender scripts for sexuality. This paper researches the ideological gender messages set within and transmitted by sex education films. Although sex education films represent only a small part of the sexual culture, the trends revealed in the films may indicate general parameters of US sexual culture.
The data set for this content analysis consisted …

Large-scale wildlands reserve systems offer one of the best hopes for slowing, if not reversing, the loss of biodiversity and wilderness. Establishing such reserves requires both sound biology and effective advocacy. Attempts by The Wildlands Project and its cooperators to meld science and advocacy in the service of conservation is working, but is not without some problems. Scientists and advocates have differences in methods of work, different understandings of the origins and place of values in conservation, and differing expectations about the efficacy of biological information in achieving protection. Despite these differences, successful relationships can be forged where these differences …

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
This project evaluated the recent construction of a public skatepark located in Tualatin Community Park. The skatepark is unique because a group of underrepresented youth initiated the idea of constructing it and helped bring it to fruition. The city has expressed a desire to see this level of energy and commitment duplicated in other youth-oriented initiatives, but needs to have a better understanding of how the skatepark project served as a positive youth development tool. In support of young people, the Tualtin City Council recently named youth issues as a "first tier" priority.
