The Nonprofit Institute Newsletter

This month’s topic is the 2020 Census.

You may have heard that the U.S. government is preparing for the next Census in 2020. Did you know that Oregon has joined seventeen other states in a lawsuit to block changes to the Census? Do you know what’s at stake for your nonprofit and the communities you serve? (hint: a lot!)

In this e-news, we interview Jason Jurjevich and Charles Rynerson of PSU’s Population Research Center to understand how nonprofits can take action by getting involved in local Complete Count Committees and by sharing important information with their communities.

Effects Of Beaver Dams On Urban Stream Hydraulic Response During Storm Events, Erin Poor Apr 2018

Effects Of Beaver Dams On Urban Stream Hydraulic Response During Storm Events, Erin Poor

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Urbanization of landscapes alters watershed hydrology, leading to changes in the natural flow regime of local streams. Runoff from impervious surfaces and routing of stormwater can cause a rapid increase in the volume and velocity of streamflow. This is observed in the hydrograph as a steep rising limb, followed by a high peak, and a rapid falling limb. This rapidly varying streamflow, often referred to as flashiness, can increase erosive forces on the channel bed and banks, leading to channel incision and bank erosion. In areas where the hydrologic regime is less impacted by humans, beaver dams and ponds attenuate …

The Integration Of Early Psychosis Services In A System Of Care Framework: Opportunities, Issues, Tamara G. Sale, Patrice Fetzer, Jennifer Humensky, Megan Baker, Kate Hardy, Douglas Noordsy, Steven Adelsheim

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the beginning of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Children’s Mental Health Initiative in 1993, the system of care (SOC) framework has provided the foundation for community- based service development in the United States and has focused on improving the lives of children, youth, and young adults who experience the most complex mental health needs and their families. In recent years, with greater understanding of early psychosis, the SOC framework has expanded to include young adults presenting with signs of early psychosis.

The SOC approach brings children, youth, and young adults with Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED)1 and …

Accidents Happen: Psychological Empowerment As A Moderator Of Accident Involvement And Its Outcomes, Berrin Erdogan, Adnan Ozyilmaz, Talya N. Bauer, Onur Emre

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research in the occupational safety realm has tended to develop and test models aimed at predicting accident involvement in the workplace, with studies treating accident involvement as the starting point and examining its outcomes being more rare. In the current study, we examine the relationship between accident involvement and a series of outcomes drawing upon a learned helplessness theory perspective. Specifically, we predicted that psychological empowerment would moderate the relationship between prior accident involvement and outcomes. We tested our hypotheses on a sample of 392 employees and their 66 supervisors working in an iron and steel manufacturing firm in Southern …

Food Waste Diversion Programming In Post-Secondary Education, Manar Arica Alattar Mar 2018

Food Waste Diversion Programming In Post-Secondary Education, Manar Arica Alattar

Dissertations and Theses

The urgent need for reform of USA and global food systems is evident in the pervasiveness of both food waste and food insecurity. Such an inefficient system strains the environmental, social, and economic systems on which it relies. Although policy and infrastructure changes are essential, consumers can play a significant role by decreasing their food waste, given that consumer waste represents 60% of the waste along the food cycle in developed countries. Incorporation of food literacy and food waste education in school curricula may provide a meaningful entry point for promoting food waste reduction skills.

This dissertation presents context on …

Allusive Meaning In Alison Bechdel’S Fun Home: Digital Humanities As Curricular Enhancement, Lynne Stahl Mar 2018

Allusive Meaning In Alison Bechdel’S Fun Home: Digital Humanities As Curricular Enhancement, Lynne Stahl

Online Northwest

Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home puts an oft-neglected feminist canon into allusive conversation with conventionally "classic" authors such as James Joyce and Oscar Wilde. Fun Home has carved a place on countless syllabi, fostering rich discussions of form and content, memory and family, and sexual politics. However, many who encounter it have not read Ulysses, Fear of Flying, or the myriad other texts Bechdel invokes.

This paper details an open-access digital humanities resource developed to help readers navigate these allusions without providing “answers.” Through a comprehensive catalog, it makes a landmark text more accessible to all.

The presentation …

Communicating Environmental Risks: Local Newspaper Coverage Of Shellfish Bacterial Contamination In Maine, Brianne Suldovsky, Eva Arbor, Victoria Skillin, Laura Lindenfeld Mar 2018

Communicating Environmental Risks: Local Newspaper Coverage Of Shellfish Bacterial Contamination In Maine, Brianne Suldovsky, Eva Arbor, Victoria Skillin, Laura Lindenfeld

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coastal resources play a vital role in Maine’s cultural and economic wellbeing, contributing an estimated 168 billion dollars to the Maine economy. There are numerous risks to the sustainability of Maine’s shellfishing industry and working waterfront, including pathogenic bacterial pollution. In this study, we ask a broad fundamental question central to science and environmental journalism: how do newspapers cover localized environmental risks and what are the implications of those approaches? Utilizing the northeastern US state of Maine’s shellfishing industry as an exemplar environmental issue, this study examines how Maine’s two most read newspapers, the Bangor Daily News and the Portland …

Representations Of Feminist Theory And Gender Issues In Introductory-Level Sociology Textbooks, Jena Amber Zarza Mar 2018

Representations Of Feminist Theory And Gender Issues In Introductory-Level Sociology Textbooks, Jena Amber Zarza

Dissertations and Theses

A review of sociological literature reveals a long history of the study of gender, and an increased popularity in the application of feminist theories and ideas to sociological research. As transmitters of the discipline, introductory-level textbooks have been heavily studied over the past quarter-century to assess the accuracy with which they portray the field of sociology. In order to update the literature available on the topic, this study analyzed the current cohort of top-selling, introductory-level sociology textbooks for coverage of feminist theory and gender issues. Each of the ten textbooks was read cover-to-cover and coded for both latent and manifest …

Soil Phosphorus Characterization And Vulnerability To Release In Urban Stormwater Bioretention Facilities, Benjamin James Shetterly Mar 2018

Soil Phosphorus Characterization And Vulnerability To Release In Urban Stormwater Bioretention Facilities, Benjamin James Shetterly

Dissertations and Theses

Modern urban stormwater infrastructure includes vegetated bioretention facilities (BRFs) that are designed to detain water and pollutants. Phosphorus (P) is a pollutant in stormwater which can be retained in BRF soils in mineral, plant, and microbial pools. We explored soil properties and phosphorus forms in the soils of 16 operational BRFs in Portland, OR. Since soil hydrology can significantly impact P retention, we selected BRFs along an infiltration rate (IR) gradient. We conducted sequential fractionation and tests of P pools and measured P release in a subset of soils after drying and flooding samples for ten days. We hypothesized that …

Effect Of Microbes On The Growth And Physiology Of The Dioecious Moss, Ceratodon Purpureus, Caitlin Ann Maraist Mar 2018

Effect Of Microbes On The Growth And Physiology Of The Dioecious Moss, Ceratodon Purpureus, Caitlin Ann Maraist

Dissertations and Theses

The microorganisms colonizing plants can have a significant effect on host phenotype, mediating such processes as pathogen resistance, stress tolerance, nutrient acquisition, growth, and reproduction. Research regarding plant-microbe interactions has focused almost exclusively on vascular plants, and we know comparatively little about how bryophytes -- including mosses, liverworts, and hornworts -- are influenced by their microbiomes. Ceratodon purpureus is a dioecious, cosmopolitan moss species that exhibits sex-specific fungal communities, yet we do not know whether these microbes have a differential effect on the growth and physiology of male and female genotypes. Using a common-garden design, we reared ten axenic genotypes …

Evaluating The Impact Of Oregon's Citizen Initiative Review (Cir) On Voter Decisions, Ari Joaquin Wubbold Mar 2018

Evaluating The Impact Of Oregon's Citizen Initiative Review (Cir) On Voter Decisions, Ari Joaquin Wubbold

Dissertations and Theses

Voters are getting information from more and more sources. Along with this proliferation of sources has come an increasing distrust of traditional mass media. This has created a challenge for voters who seek reliable information when making decisions in the voting booth; including on ballot initiatives. Because voters tend to find ballot initiatives confusing and not easily informed by traditional party cues, the Citizen's Initiative Review (CIR) and the non-partisan, fact-based recommendations they produce have now spread into multiple states. This thesis seeks to gauge whether the CIR is effective at achieving the goals of increasing voter knowledge and encouraging …

Benevolent Sexism And Racial Stereotypes: Targets, Functions, And Consequences, Jean Marie Mcmahon Mar 2018

Benevolent Sexism And Racial Stereotypes: Targets, Functions, And Consequences, Jean Marie Mcmahon

Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I present three manuscripts in which I integrate race into an ambivalent sexism framework using experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional methods. The first paper tests whether a female's race acts as a subtype to differentially elicit benevolent sexism (BS). Two experiments demonstrated that BS is more strongly associated with White women than Black women. The second paper explores the relationship between protective paternalism (a subcomponent of BS), anti-minority attitudes, and threat. Threat was associated with stronger endorsement of protective paternalism and a corresponding increase in anti-minority attitudes, particularly for White men, implicating BS in the maintenance of racial …

Framing Race And Blame In The Media: A Case Study On The Chapel Hill Shooting, Sara Abdullatif Galadari Mar 2018

Framing Race And Blame In The Media: A Case Study On The Chapel Hill Shooting, Sara Abdullatif Galadari

Dissertations and Theses

This research examines how racism is hidden and denied by the press, and how blame is attributed to individuals in crime news stories. This research heavily relies of van Dijk's (2015) six discursive strategies to reveal how racism is hidden and denied in the press: positive self-presentation, denial and counter-attack, moral blackmail, subtle denials, mitigation, and defense and offense. Specifically, the Chapel Hill shooting is used as an example of a crime news story for my case study. This study will use framing as the primary method, and critical discourse analysis will be used to guide my interpretations of the …

Foreign Language Anxiety, Sexuality, And Gender: Lived Experiences Of Four Lgbtq+ Students, James Donald Mitchell Mar 2018

Foreign Language Anxiety, Sexuality, And Gender: Lived Experiences Of Four Lgbtq+ Students, James Donald Mitchell

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between foreign language anxiety and gender identity has been largely a quantitative endeavor that has shown contradictory results. Furthermore, sexual identity has not been researched in foreign language anxiety literature. A qualitative account of LGBTQ+ language learners with different gender identities has been absent from the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between foreign language anxiety and sexual and gender identity. To gain insight into this relationship, this qualitative study investigated the lived experiences of four LGBTQ+ foreign language university students who represented three gender identities. Data were collected through multiple, in-depth …

Glacier Inventories And Change In Glacier National Park, Melissa Carrie Brett Mar 2018

Glacier Inventories And Change In Glacier National Park, Melissa Carrie Brett

Dissertations and Theses

Glacier National Park, in northwestern Montana, is a unique and awe-inspiring national treasure that is often used by the media and public-at-large as a window into the effects of climate change. An updated inventory of glaciers and perennial snowfields (G&PS) in the Park, along with an assessment of their change over time, is essential to understanding the role that glaciers are playing in the environment of this Park. Nine inventories between 1966 and 2015 were compiled to assess area changes of G&PS. Over that 49-year period, total area changed by nearly -34 ± 11% between 1966 and 2015. Volume change, …

Citizen Advocacy For Safe Streets In Bremen, Germany, Anne Kirkham Mar 2018

Citizen Advocacy For Safe Streets In Bremen, Germany, Anne Kirkham

PSU Transportation Seminars

Although Germany may be known internationally for its environmentalism, over the past 20 years German cities have chronically underinvested in transportation networks, both for public transport as well as non-motorized options. The lag in the development and expansion of sustainable options combined with the rapid growth in private automobile ownership (itself the result of automobile-industry-friendly policymaking) means that cities like Bremen have been left behind in terms of transportation planning. As in America, SUV sales continue to increase despite considerably narrower streets, particularly in cities.

Nowhere is this more visible than in Bremen’s Neustadt, a dense neighbourhood with the most …

From Brotherhood And Unity To Fratricide: Propaganda In Former Yugoslavia, Jelena H. Grove Mar 2018

From Brotherhood And Unity To Fratricide: Propaganda In Former Yugoslavia, Jelena H. Grove

University Honors Theses

The dissolution of Yugoslavia has become a textbook example of the power of propaganda in times of war. The former president of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, is famed for "stirring the pot" in Yugoslavia and is in many accounts uniquely antagonized for his role, while that of his counterpart, Franjo Tudjman of Croatia, is often overlooked. This thesis will give an overview of both sides' propaganda tactics (monopolistic control, historical revisionism, and appeals to emotions/anxiety) during roughly the years 1987-1992, which will cover their rises to power (1987-1990) and the beginning of the Wars of Yugoslav Succession (1991-1992). The aim of …

Towards A Smaller Housing Paradigm: A Literature Review Of Accessory Dwelling Units And Micro Apartments, Thomas Geffner Mar 2018

Towards A Smaller Housing Paradigm: A Literature Review Of Accessory Dwelling Units And Micro Apartments, Thomas Geffner

University Honors Theses

American housing has, on the average, trended larger over the last 42 years. This pattern has been challenged by a new generation of developers and builders who are embracing small construction. Accessory dwelling units and micro apartments are two typologies of small housing which have recently gained prominence. This paper finds that these two typologies have the potential to offer significant benefits to communities by providing affordable housing, decreasing the environmental impact of new construction and by providing options to diversify the homogeneous American housing stock. Several major barriers are identified which hinder the implementation of these small housing typologies, …
