Perceptions Of Teacher-Writers: Initial Influences To Write, Shari L. Daniels, Pamela Beck Jan 2019

Perceptions Of Teacher-Writers: Initial Influences To Write, Shari L. Daniels, Pamela Beck

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This qualitative case study explores perceptions of teacher-writers’ early writing histories and examines their initial influences to write. Interviews and writing artifacts of ten K-12 teacher-writers serve as the primary data source. Findings indicate that teachers with strong identities as readers and/or writers in their K-12 experiences often received positive feedback which encouraged them to develop as writers, while teachers challenged with mechanics often received negative feedback which discouraged them from writing. Revisiting negative writing histories reshaped writing beliefs to influence a positive writing identities. The authors suggest practices for pre-service literacy courses to examine writing histories and to develop …

Reddit As An Analogy For Scholarly Publishing And The Constructed, Contextual Nature Of Authority, Anna M. White

Communications in Information Literacy

This paper provides an overview of how the social news site Reddit can be used as an example of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education threshold concept “Authority is Constructed and Contextual.” It posits that the construction and context of authority in the sense of Wilson’s concept of cognitive authority is in the inherent structure of Reddit and that students can benefit from an example that easily links their personal and academic lives—a connection not always made when discussing authority in peer-reviewed publications or databases.

Homelessness Count Methodologies Literature Review, Jennifer Lee-Anderson Jan 2019

Homelessness Count Methodologies Literature Review, Jennifer Lee-Anderson

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

This literature review on homeless count methods provides a brief history of homelessness in the U.S., an account of count efforts, and an overview of methods used. It illustrates that no method is capable of providing a comprehensive count of the homeless, and all methods have inherent disadvantages that often rely upon flawed assumptions. The practical impact of these counts on policy is substantial. Therefore, this review should encourage discussion as to what data communities need for policy and program development and implementation, and whether homeless counts actually fulfill this need.

Context-Aware Synthesis For Video Frame Interpolation, Simon Niklaus, Feng Liu Jan 2019

Context-Aware Synthesis For Video Frame Interpolation, Simon Niklaus, Feng Liu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Video frame interpolation algorithms typically estimate optical flow or its variations and then use it to guide the synthesis of an intermediate frame between two consecutive original frames. To handle challenges like occlusion, bidirectional flow between the two input frames is often estimated and used to warp and blend the input frames. However, how to effectively blend the two warped frames still remains a challenging problem. This paper presents a context-aware synthesis approach that warps not only the input frames but also their pixel-wise contextual information and uses them to interpolate a high-quality intermediate frame. Specifically, we first use a …

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Integrated land use and transportation models have evolved along a spectrum from simple sketch planning models to complex microsimulation models. While each has its niche, they are largely unable to balance the flexibility and realism of microsimulation and the speed and interactivity of simple models. The Regional Strategic Planning Model (RSPM) aims to fill this gap by taking a microsimulation approach while making other simplifications in order to model first-order effects quickly. It enables planners to consider the robustness of prospective policies in the face of future uncertainties by accepting a broad range of inputs and allowing rapid simulations of …

The Effect Of Styrene-Maleic Acid (Sma) Copolymers On Solubilizing Lipid Bilayers And Forming Nanodiscs, Ghada Alramadan

Dissertations and Theses

Cell membranes, or plasma membranes, play an essential role in the structure and the function of living cells. In 1972, the fluid mosaic membrane model was the first unifying paradigm of membrane structure. It is no longer considered adequate because evidence of many non-homogeneous lipid structures in both natural and model membranes have been discovered over the past thirty years. The field of membrane biophysics now uses updated versions of the mosaic model, which consists of the complex mixture of different lipid species. The lipid species found in natural membranes produce a range of dynamic, laterally segregated, non-homogeneous domains, which …

Subjective Cognitive Functioning Relates To Parenting In Mothers With Chronic Pain, Denae S. Clohessy

University Honors Theses

Individuals with chronic pain commonly report problems with daily cognitive functioning. This feeling of decreased subjective cognitive functioning (SCF) can be distressing due to its impact on daily life and relationships. Children of parents with chronic pain are at an increased risk for the development of chronic pain and related impairment and it is possible that lower parental SCF could increase this risk. Specifically, mothers with lower SCF may have difficulty completing day-to-day caregiving activities as well as responding flexibly to children’s behaviors. The present study focused on examining the impact of SCF on parenting in mothers with chronic pain. …

Working Paper No. 01, Three Forms Of Fascism, Lauren Sweger-Hollingsworth

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that fascism can appear in three forms. A classical fascist, a brutal and dominating figure, is autodidactic, having impressive and engaging oratory skills that effectively put forth their ideals to the working-class majority. Neo-fascists, or neo-Nazis, idolize Hitler and the society of Nazi Germany, being extremely radical and militant, they exist in small groups dispersed around the world. A post-modern fascist uses money and various forms of media to spread their ideologies to vulnerable members of society. Post-modern fascists project themselves as hard-working and tough, but they buy loyalty and pay others to do their …
