Access To Arynes From Arenes Via Net Dehydrogenation: Scope, Synthetic Applications And Mechanistic Analysis, Riley A. Roberts, Bryan E. Metze, Nicole Javaly, Theresa M. Mccormick, David R. Stuart

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Arynes undergo a wide range of chemical transformations making them versatile reactive intermediates for organic synthesis. Access to arynes has long been dominated by pre-functionalised reagents, e.g., the venerable o-trimethylsilylaryl triflates. However, a move toward developing methods to access arynes that are both mild and efficient has prompted research into aryl “onium” aryne precursors. Here, we leverage aryl “onium” species as in situ or isolated intermediates in a net dehydrogenation of simple arenes as a novel and efficient way to access arynes. We describe a unified strategy in which two different tactics are employed to access diversely substituted …

Shock Effects Including Maskelynite Formation In Three Shergottite Meteorites From Mars, George Ayeh Anim Feb 2025

Shock Effects Including Maskelynite Formation In Three Shergottite Meteorites From Mars, George Ayeh Anim

Dissertations and Theses

Martian meteorites result from large impact events on the surface of Mars that cause intense shock metamorphism. This study examines the shock metamorphic features of three shergottite meteorites, Dho 019, NWA 12241, and NWA 15628, to better understand shock impact events. The research uses petrographic analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to analyze the meteorites. A key focus of this research is the formation of maskelynite, a glass with plagioclase composition, whose formation mechanism has been the substance of debate among researchers. This study proposes that maskelynite forms through a transient intermediary …

Photocathodes From Aerobic Oxidation Of Tellurorhodamines, Amelia Jellison Feb 2025

Photocathodes From Aerobic Oxidation Of Tellurorhodamines, Amelia Jellison

Dissertations and Theses

Growing environmental concerns have facilitated an increased need for renewable energy. Solar energy is an excellent source of renewable energy, however current dye-sensitized solar cells are not efficient enough for commercial use. This thesis attempts to create a novel dye-sensitized cathode to increase the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Dye-sensitized cathodes could lower the energy level on the cathode and thereby increase the overall efficiency of the solar cell, however until now it has not been attempted. A tellurorhodamine dye with a mesityl ring was chosen as the dye for its ability to aerobically oxidize in the presence of light. …

"I'Ll Just Say It's Been A Racist Process": The Power Dynamics Within And Outside Diversity Requirement Classrooms At A Minority-Serving Institution, Kazusa Seko

Dissertations and Theses

U.S. higher educational institutions have increasingly implemented diversity requirements; however, institutional power dynamics during the implementation process and in a classroom after the implementation should be more highlighted. This study aims to understand the implementation of a diversity requirement during the implementation process and faculty and student experiences within required diversity courses at Portland State University (PSU) by analyzing one-on-one semi-structured interviews. PSU is a minority-serving educational institution that implemented a diversity requirement, the Race and Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR), in Fall 2022. These data are analyzed through Critical Race Theory (CRT) lenses--introducing Okun's (2021) white supremacy culture in an …

Understanding Anionic Hyperporphyrins: Tddft Calculations On Peripherally Deprotonated Meso-Tetrakis(4-Hydroxyphenyl)Porphyrin., Jeanet Conradie, Carl C. Wamser, Abhik Ghosh

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Presented herein is a DFT/TDDFT study of -tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (H[THPP]) and its Meso-deprotonated tetraanionic form; the latter was modeled as both a free tetraanion and with various counterions. Based on our calculations, the experimentally observed hyperporphyrin spectra are attributed to an admixture of phenol/phenoxide character into the a-type HOMO of tetraphenylporphyrin. The admixture results in an elevation of the orbital energy of the HOMO in relation to other frontier orbitals, which accounts for the observed spectral redshifts. The calculations underscore differences in the performance of different exchange-correlation functionals. Thus, while the popular hybrid functional B3LYP greatly exaggerates the redshift of …

Juan Sánchez Cotán’S Still Lifes And Artistic Ingenio In Early Modern Toledo, Carmen Ripollés Jan 2025

Juan Sánchez Cotán’S Still Lifes And Artistic Ingenio In Early Modern Toledo, Carmen Ripollés

Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay brings new light on the creation and early reception of the still lifes of the Toledan painter Juan Sánchez Cotán. It focuses on Cotán’s friendship with and professional relationship to the metalworker Diego de Valdivieso and the manuscript illuminator Juan de Salazar, both of whom are recorded as being among the first owners of his still lifes. An analysis of these artists’ works vis-j-vis Cotán’s still lifes reveals similar technical and conceptual concerns, as well as a shared will to elevate their crafts to demonstrate ingenio. This analysis therefore places Cotán’s still lifes in the context of artistic …

3F4 Hypergeometric Functions As A Sum Of A Product Of 1F2 Functions, Jack C. Straton Jan 2025

3F4 Hypergeometric Functions As A Sum Of A Product Of 1F2 Functions, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper shows that certain 3F4 hypergeometric functions can be expanded in sums of pair products of 1F2 functions. In special cases, the 3F4 hypergeometric functions reduce to 2F3 functions. Further special cases allow one to reduce the 2F3 functions to 1F2 functions, and the sums to products of 0F1 (Bessel) and 1F2 functions. The class of hypergeometric functions with summation theorems are thereby expanded beyond those expressible as pair-products of 2F1 functions, 3F2 functions, and generalized Whittaker functions, into …

Forest Fires Increase Mid-Winter Snowmelt In The Western Oregon Cascades, Sage Ebel Jan 2025

Forest Fires Increase Mid-Winter Snowmelt In The Western Oregon Cascades, Sage Ebel

Dissertations and Theses

As the spatiotemporal overlap between burned forests, seasonal snow, extreme precipitation, and mid-winter warming continues to increase with climate change, it is critical we quantify the impacts of forest fires and rain-on-snow (ROS) on mid-winter snowmelt and snow-water resources. In the Pacific Northwest, the release of large volumes of meltwater to downstream receiving water from already vulnerable snowpacks can have catastrophic consequences. I show that forest fires doubled mid-winter snowmelt proportions as compared to unburned reference sites, using a novel network of snow monitoring and micrometeorological stations installed across an elevational and forest type gradient in a burned watershed in …

Integrative Approaches To Climate Resilience Planning: Application Of A Plan Evaluation Framework, Maulsri Jha Jan 2025

Integrative Approaches To Climate Resilience Planning: Application Of A Plan Evaluation Framework, Maulsri Jha

Dissertations and Theses

In the last two decades, urban governments have streamlined and prioritized the creation and implementation of climate resilience plans to cater to the communities' vulnerabilities. Existing research illustrates that there is a gap in understanding how, or if, empirical (evidence-based) data are incorporated into the design and implementation of such plans and the extent to which their inclusion impacts outcomes in terms of vulnerability reduction. There is also a gap in the systematic study of their outcomes in terms of community resilience, and whether equity and environmental justice are promoted as priorities.

The purpose of the research is to understand …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prediction-powered inference (PPI) [1] and its subsequent development called PPI++ [2] provide a novel approach to standard statistical estimation leveraging machine learning systems to enhance unlabeled data with predictions. We use this paradigm in clinical trials. The predictions are provided by disease progression models, providing prognostic scores for all the participants as a function of baseline covariates. The proposed method would empower clinical trials by providing untreated digital twins of the treated patients while remaining statistically valid. The potential implications of this new estimator of the treatment effect in a two-arm randomized clinical trial (RCT) are manifold. First, it leads …

Wind And Topography Underlie Correlation Between Seasonal Snowpack, Mountain Glaciers, And Late-Summer Streamflow, Elijah N. Boardman, Andrew G. Fountain, Joseph W. Boardman, Thomas H. Painter, Evan W. Burgess, Laura Wilson, Adrian A. Harpold

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a warming climate, net mass loss from perennial snow and ice (PSI) contributes a temporary source of unsustainable streamflow. However, the role of topography and wind in mediating the streamflow patterns of deglaciating watersheds is unknown. We conduct lidar surveys of seasonal snow and PSI elevation change for five adjacent watersheds in the Wind River Range, Wyoming (WRR). Between 2019 and 2023, net mass loss from PSI is equivalent to ~10-36% of August-September streamflow. Across 338 manually classified PSI features >0.01 km2, glaciers contribute 68% of the total mass loss, perennial snowfields contribute 8%, rock glaciers contribute 1%, buried …

Identifying The Effect Of Architecture Morphology On Wind Fields And Pm2.5 Dispersion At The Urban Block Scale Via A Combined Scheme, Bin Guo, Lu Li, Xiaowei Zhu, Zheng Wang, Miaoyi Chen, Lin Pei, Tengyue Guo

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study explores the potential of architecture morphology to mitigate PM2.5 pollution through enhanced urban ventilation. Despite the recognized influence of building designs on wind and air pollution distribution at the urban block scale, specific mechanisms remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we have developed an integrative approach combining in-situ observations, Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and statistical modeling. Here, CFD simulates the flow field and PM2.5 dispersion, using in-situ observations for turbulence model selection. GIS quantify architecture morphology parameters to establish accurate CFD boundary conditions, ensuring simulations reflect real-world conditions and precise …

Drta: Dynamic Reward Scaling For Reinforcement Learning In Time Series Anomaly Detection, Bahareh Golchin, Banafsheh Rekabdar, Kunpeng Liu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Anomaly detection in time series data is important for applications in finance, healthcare, sensor networks, and industrial monitoring. Traditional methods usually struggle with limited labeled data, high false-positive rates, and difficulty generalizing to novel anomaly types. To overcome these challenges, we propose a reinforcement learning-based framework that integrates dynamic reward shaping, Variational Autoencoder (VAE), and active learning, called DRTA. Our method uses an adaptive reward mechanism that balances exploration and exploitation by dynamically scaling the effect of VAE-based reconstruction error and classification rewards. This approach enables the agent to detect anomalies effectively in low-label systems while maintaining high precision and …

Scitopic: Enhancing Topic Discovery In Scientific Literature Through Advanced Llm, Pengjiang Li, Zaitian Wang, Xinhao Zhang, Ran Zhang, Lu Jiang, Pengfei Wang, Yuanchun Zhou

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Topic discovery in scientific literature provides valuable insights for researchers to identify emerging trends and explore new avenues for investigation, facilitating easier scientific information retrieval. Many machine learning methods, particularly deep embedding techniques, have been applied to discover research topics. However, most existing topic discovery methods rely on word embedding to capture the semantics and lack a comprehensive understanding of scientific publications, struggling with complex, high-dimensional text relationships. Inspired by the exceptional comprehension of textual information by large language models (LLMs), we propose an advanced topic discovery method enhanced by LLMs to improve scientific topic identification, namely SciTopic. Specifically, we …

Polynomial-Time Constant-Approximation For Fair Sum-Of-Radii Clustering, Sina Nezhad, Sayan Bandyapadhyay, Tianzhi Chen Jan 2025

Polynomial-Time Constant-Approximation For Fair Sum-Of-Radii Clustering, Sina Nezhad, Sayan Bandyapadhyay, Tianzhi Chen

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a seminal work, Chierichetti et al. [20] introduced the (t,k)-fair clustering problem: Given a set of red points and a set of blue points in a metric space, a clustering is called fair if the number of red points in each cluster is at most t times and at least 1/t times the number of blue points in that cluster. The goal is to compute a fair clustering with at most k clusters that optimizes certain objective function. Considering this problem, they designed a polynomial-time O(1)- and O(t)-approximation for the k-center and the k-median objective, respectively. Recently, Carta et …

“Lost-In-The-Later”: Framework For Quantifying Contextual Grounding In Large Language Models, Yufei Tao, Adam Hiatt, Rahul Seetharaman, Ameeta Agrawal

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large language models (LLMs) are capable of leveraging both contextual and parametric knowledge but how they prioritize and integrate these sources remains underexplored. We introduce CoPE, a novel framework for systematically quantifying contextual grounding in LLMs. CoPE distinguishes between contextual knowledge (CK) and parametric knowledge (PK), enabling fine-grained attribution across languages and tasks. Using our newly created MultiWikiAtomic dataset in English, Spanish, and Danish, we analyze how LLMs integrate context, prioritize information, and incorporate PK in open-ended question answering. We find that across models and languages, only around 50 to 76 percent of outputs are grounded in the given context, …

Retrieval-Augmented Feature Generation For Domain-Specific Classification, Xinhao Zhang, Jinghan Zhang, Fengran Mo, Dakshak Keerthi Chandra, Yu-Zhong Chen, Fei Xie, Kunpeng Liu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Feature generation can significantly enhance learning outcomes, particularly for tasks with limited data. An effective way to improve feature generation is to expand the current feature space using existing features and enriching the informational content. However, generating new, interpretable features usually requires domain-specific knowledge on top of the existing features. In this paper, we introduce a Retrieval-Augmented Feature Generation method, RAFG, to generate useful and explainable features specific to domain classification tasks. To increase the interpretability of the generated features, we conduct knowledge retrieval among the existing features in the domain to identify potential feature associations. These associations are expected …

Recovering Population Of The Southern Sea Otter Suppresses A Global Marine Invader, Rikke Jeppesen, Catherine E. De Rivera, Edwin D. Grosholz, M. Tim Tinker, Brent B. Hughes, Ron Eby, Kerstin Wasson

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Understanding the role of apex predators on ecosystems is essential for designing effective conservation strategies. Supporting recovery of apex predators can have many benefits; one that has been rarely examined is control of invasive prey. We investigated whether a recovering apex predator, the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), can exert local control over a global marine invader, the green crab (Carcinus maenas). We determined that southern sea otters in Elkhorn Slough estuary in California can consume large numbers of invasive green crabs and found strong negative relationships in space and time between otter and green crab abundance. Green crabs …

Having a sense of belonging can promote persistence in the STEM fields, but less is known about what it means to develop that sense of belonging. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted semi‐structured interviews with a cohort of STEM students (n = 10) nearing graduation at an urban university regarding their sense of belonging and qualitatively coded the interviews using thematic analysis. Results revealed that all interviewed students clearly articulated feelings of belonging, making them an ideal population from which to learn more. We applied two frameworks to guide our understanding of what factors promoted the development of a sense …

We explore how data visualizations (DVs) are representational tools that can be used to narrate certain aspects of a context but silence others. Using multiple DVs allows for contrasting the DVs and likely provides opportunities for critical reading and exploring the entanglement of political and ecological dimensions of an issue. We start by integrating two sets of practices, Notice, Wonder, Feel, Act and Reimagine (NW-FAR) (Kahn, et al., 2022) and critical graph reading, Framing, Formatting, Narrating (FFN) (Rubel, et al., 2021) towards taking a socio-political stance and supporting students to read data visualizations and develop critical data literacy. Global Patterns Of Coseismic Landslide Runout Mobility Differ From Aseismic Landslide Trends, Alex R. R. Grant, Natalie K. Culhane Jan 2025

Global Patterns Of Coseismic Landslide Runout Mobility Differ From Aseismic Landslide Trends, Alex R. R. Grant, Natalie K. Culhane

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coseismic landslides significantly contribute to human and economic losses during and immediately following earthquakes, yet very little data on the runout of such landslides exist. While well-established behavior of aseismic (e.g., hydrologically triggered) landslide runout mobility suggests strong correlation between landslide size and mobility, limited studies of coseismic landslide runout find conflicting mobility trends. We present a global dataset of runout lengths produced from a new automated method for estimating landslide runout, developed and validated using 1726 manually mapped landslides from five unique earthquakes. We then apply the automated runout tool to 23 global earthquake-induced landslide inventories, producing a compiled …

The Stochastic Occupation Kernel (Sock) Method For Learning Stochastic Differential Equations, M. L. Wells, Kamel Lahouel, Bruno Jedynak Jan 2025

The Stochastic Occupation Kernel (Sock) Method For Learning Stochastic Differential Equations, M. L. Wells, Kamel Lahouel, Bruno Jedynak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a novel kernel-based method for learning multivariate stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The method follows a two-step procedure: we first estimate the drift term function, then the (matrix-valued) diffusion function given the drift. Occupation kernels are integral functionals on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) that aggregate information over a trajectory. Our approach leverages vector-valued occupation kernels for estimating the drift component of the stochastic process. For diffusion estimation, we extend this framework by introducing operator-valued occupation kernels, enabling the estimation of an auxiliary matrix-valued function as a positive semi-definite operator, from which we readily derive the diffusion estimate. …
