Partisans, Godmothers, Bicyclists, And Other Terrorists: Women In The French Resistance And Under Vichy, Rayna Kline Jan 1977

Partisans, Godmothers, Bicyclists, And Other Terrorists: Women In The French Resistance And Under Vichy, Rayna Kline

Dissertations and Theses

During the years 1940-1944, the period of the German Occupation, French women played an active role in the political sphere as part of the organized Resistance movements. The women who participated were not isolated examples, but an extremely diverse group that cut across social milieux, political alignments and religious persuasions. The range of their activity in the spectrum of roles and the differences in their style challenge the stereotypes and persistent attitudes in French culture about women’s nature.

Women were leaders in the principal Resistance movements, participated in the organization and dissemination of the underground press and in the organization …

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of the establishment and exceptional growth of the Baldwin Sheep & Land Company of Hay Creek, Oregon, during the period 1873 to 1910. The operation has been examined to determine the effects of population movement, market conditions, economic trends, and federal land policies on the course of its development.

The data used to analyze the internal character of the business were taken from a collection of the papers of John Griffith Edwards located in the Oregon Historical Society Library. The materials from the collection used were a short history of the Ranch written by John …

A Methodology For Determining Mass Movement Susceptibility For Land-Use Planning, Vern Walter Cimmery Oct 1976

A Methodology For Determining Mass Movement Susceptibility For Land-Use Planning, Vern Walter Cimmery

Dissertations and Theses

Land-use planning takes into consideration geologic hazards in order to protect both life and property. One type of geologic hazard is mass movement. Mass movement is a collective term for the downslope movement of mass units of debris e.g., bedrock, soil, and subsurface material, resulting from the influence of gravity and involving transporting media such as ice, snow, water, and air. As population increases, further pressures are placed on existing land use. Many areas once considered unsuitable for development due to steep slope or other physical characteristics are now experiencing problems. These areas, due to their physical characteristics, can be …

Reapportionment : An Oregon History And A Critique Of Baker Vs Carr, Ann Frissell Lackey Jul 1976

Reapportionment : An Oregon History And A Critique Of Baker Vs Carr, Ann Frissell Lackey

Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the ways in which federal and state authorities have sought to deal with a difficult problem of political power in the context of the U.S. Constitution. Oregon reapportionment history offers an appropriate introduction to a critique of the national reapportionment decisions of Baker vs Carr and Reynolds vs Sims. Its Constitution stipulated population and the ratio derived from a population based formula were the means by which apportionment was to be determined and noncompliance had been particularly evident from 1933 to 1952. Also, by the initiative process and a decision by the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon had …

The Nature And Distribution Of Turf-Banked Terraces In The Olympic Mountains, Washington, Katherine Jane Hansen Jul 1976

The Nature And Distribution Of Turf-Banked Terraces In The Olympic Mountains, Washington, Katherine Jane Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

Well-developed turf-banked terraces are found in the Olympic.Mountains of Washington, but not found· in the other mountains of the Pacific Northwest. My study is based just on the Olympic Mountains and the·major thrust of my investigation is aimed at answering questions: What is the nature of turf-banked terrace development in the Olympic Mountains? Why does it occur, and what is its local ecological significance? The major field investigations were carried out during the summer of 1975.

A two hour reconnaissance was made over the Olympic Mountains to plot the distribution of turf-banked terraces; the most striking discovery was that terraces …

Contributions To Tualatin Ethnography: Subsistence And Ethnobiology, Henry B. Zenk

Dissertations and Theses

There is a considerable amount of unpublished source material on Kalapuyan ethnography. This consists primarily of manuscript field notes from three linguistically trained scholars: Albert S. Gatschet, who collected Kalapuyan linguistic and ethnographic data during a visit to Grand Ronde Reservation in 1877, Leo J. Frachtenberg, who worked with a number of Kalapuyan informants from 1913 to 1915, and Melville Jacobs, who worked with the last surviving speakers of Kalapuyan languages during a number of sessions between 1928 and 1936. Data from these three authorities, plus other available data, reveal many details about aboriginal Kalapuyan life ("aboriginal" here referring to …

A Comparative Study Of Aristotle's Poetics And Ezra Pound's Abc Of Reading, Michael P. Hagensick

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is a comparative study of Aristotle's Poetics and Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading to discover and determine values in literature, especially poetry, which reflect on the nature and the manifestations of human communication. I feel that scholars in the field of communication can benefit personally and academically from exposure to those poets who have expressed themselves on the reasons or the manners in which people communicate. To pursue this question requires the use of a guide to poetry, a method by which I can learn to recognize a poem on sight; so that when it comes to discourse …

Bayesian Inquiry: An Approach To The Use Of Experts, King G. Yee May 1976

Bayesian Inquiry: An Approach To The Use Of Experts, King G. Yee

Dissertations and Theses

Subjective information is a valuable resource; however, decisionmakers often ignore it because of difficulties in eliciting it from assessors. This thesis is on Bayesian inquiry and it presents an approach to eliciting subjective information from assessors. Based on the concepts of cascaded inference and Bayesian statistics, the approach is designed to reveal to the decision-maker the way in which the assessor considers his options and the reasons he has for selecting particular alternatives. Unlike previous works on cascaded inferences, the approach here focuses on incoherency. Specifically, it employs the use of additional information to revise and check the estimates. The …

Need Assessment Methodology, Gerald A. Burns, Janet S. Putnam Jan 1976

Need Assessment Methodology, Gerald A. Burns, Janet S. Putnam

Dissertations and Theses

A need assessment is a systematic process of determining community needs through the comparative analysis of people, problems, and services. Although need assessments of some form have existed since biblical times, it has only been within recent years that their use in social planning has become prominent. This is attributed to the increasing belief in the necessity of pertinent data to make decision-making responsive to community needs.

Ten basic issues should be considered in designing a need assessment, These are: 1) Purpose; 2) Decision-making context; 3) Agency resources; 4) Scope; 5) Future studies; 6) Staff roles; 7) Data collection; 8) …

Mixed Media Drawings With Emphasis On Ceramic Materials, Timothy Jopseph Harvey Aug 1975

Mixed Media Drawings With Emphasis On Ceramic Materials, Timothy Jopseph Harvey

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose and scope of this thesis has been to expand the concept of drawing to include ceramic materials in focusing on and clarifying notions of the human landscape. Initially traditional drawing problems of still life, figure and landscape were undertaken. The landscape problem was regarded as a good beginning point since it was free of the forceful references that could have easily overwhelmed cityscape studies before a visual understanding could be solidly established. The landscape problem was focused on and underwent a series of changes beginning with rough sketch-like studies through "realistic rendering" to limited and, finally, extreme abstraction. …

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi May 1975

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi

Dissertations and Theses

American missionaries to Iran exerted little influence in the area of religion, rather their impact was in education and medicine. Two decisive factors involved in their success were the awakening of Iran to the advances of Western technology and the limited scope of indigenous opportunities in the fields of learning and medicine. Their work in Iran was, however, hampered by opposition from those elements wishing to retain the status quo. In spite of such reactions, they were able to maintain their positions in Iran for approximately one hundred years. It was the advent of the Pahlavi dynasty which initially limited …

Analysis Of The Port Of Portland Facility Hinterlands, Timothy D. Wilson Feb 1975

Analysis Of The Port Of Portland Facility Hinterlands, Timothy D. Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

Most of the United States port authorities delineate their hinterland by the use of freight rate schedules used by inland carriers. The hinterland is defined as that region having favorable rates to and from a port. The use of freight rate schedules can be applied to a) individual commodities or to b) all the commodities moving through a port. The freight rate method is built on the "rational man" concept. That is, a situation is assumed where there is "perfect knowledge" and a desire to minimize transportation costs. This assumption does not always coincide with reality.

This paper classifies commodities …

The Teaching Of History In The Secondary Schools Of Australia, Richard Townley Blaine Feb 1975

The Teaching Of History In The Secondary Schools Of Australia, Richard Townley Blaine

Dissertations and Theses

Australian students terminating their secondary education with completion of Form Four provided the major stimulus during the last decade for new curriculum developments in an organized study of man. To provide these fifteen-year old pupils with the necessary exposure to life for social adjustment underscored the debate between many social scientists and history teachers on the ability of their respective subject's focus.

Where in the middle of the last decade Australia found herself in the middle of a communication revolution, many students, ending their educations during mid-adolescence, did not finish the normal sequence of history courses. History's dominance in the …

A Comparison Of Socialization And The Current Attitudes Towards Personal And Feminist Issues Of Women Over 65, Gayle Austin, Anna Belle Sime Jan 1975

A Comparison Of Socialization And The Current Attitudes Towards Personal And Feminist Issues Of Women Over 65, Gayle Austin, Anna Belle Sime

Dissertations and Theses

Women, as feminist and as familist, have been in many varied ways the subjects of study. They have been studied as black women, middle-aged women, sexual women, women in poverty, women in prison, women raped, executives, celebrities, lesbians and homemakers. The classifications and combinations approached infinity. Now older women are becoming a more popular research topic, as their numbers increase with medical attainments. With the increasing participation of older “sisters” in such organizations as the National Organization for Women, and the advent of groups such as the gray panthers, it has become apparent that there are no age barriers to …

A Mineralogical And Geochemical Study Of The Ferruginous Bauxite Deposits In Columbia County, Oregon, And Wahkiakum County, Washington, Ronald Laverne Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

Wet chemical analysis and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) were performed on a suite of samples from three residual ferruginous bauxite profiles in the study area for abundances of Al2O3,

SiO2, Fe2O3, Ti O2, Na, Sc, Hf, Cr, Co, La, Sm, Yb, Lu, and Th. In addition a mineralogical study accompanied this research, using petrographic, differential thermal, and x-ray diffraction techniques. In each profile, the relative mobility of these elements were calculated by empirical methods for comparison with the parent rock and mineral properties in the saprolite.

Interaction Patterns In The Campground, Dennis Lee Rockwood Mar 1974

Interaction Patterns In The Campground, Dennis Lee Rockwood

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this project was to examine interaction patterns in various campground settings and to elaborate on camping literature which has suggested that the campground is a social event with high rates of interaction. In exploring this phenomenon, this report utilized observational techniques to document the temporal, spatial, familiarity, numerical, and behavioral dimensions of the observed interactions.

The data suggested that young adults and middle-aged persons were observed to be involved in, and initiated the highest proportions of, interactions. In general, males displayed far greater proportions of initiations than females. The highly developed campground exhibited higher proportions and rates …

The Effectiveness Of Induced Location Of Manufacturing Industry As A Means Of Fostering Sustained Economic Growth In Less Developed Regions Of Oregon, Leland F. Smith Mar 1974

The Effectiveness Of Induced Location Of Manufacturing Industry As A Means Of Fostering Sustained Economic Growth In Less Developed Regions Of Oregon, Leland F. Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this thesis was chosen from both a professional and an academic interest in the economic development of Oregon. Prompted by proposals made to the Oregon Legislature to initiate various forms of industrial subsidy programs to disperse economic growth and population away from congested areas, this research effort seeks to provide an evaluative analysis of the effectiveness of subsidy techniques in influencing industrial location and stimulating a sustained growth process in less developed areas.

Research was undertaken in two primary subjects: 1) theory of regional economic development and the effects of subsidies on the growth process; and 2) …
