Prc Gresham Parks Report: Demographic And Parks Access Analyses, Kenneth Radin, Irina V. Sharkova

Publications, Reports and Presentations

The City of Gresham Parks & Recreation Division (GPRD) requested that the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) prepare a demographic profile, population forecasts, and parks and natural areas access analyses (‘parks access’) for the City of Gresham and its Springwater and Pleasant Valley planning areas. The study will inform GPRD’s Parks, Natural Areas, and Trails Comprehensive Planning effort, currently underway.

The demographic profile discusses current conditions and likely future trends for population, housing, and households, with a focus on age and race/ethnicity. It includes many demographic map ‘layers’, which in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software can be overlayed …

Biogeochemical Stoichiometry Of Antarctic Dry Valley Ecosystems, John E. Barrett, Ross A. Virginia, W. Berry Lyons, Diane M. Mcknight, John Charles Priscu, Peter T. Doran, Andrew G. Fountain, Diana H. Wall, D. L. Moorhead Feb 2007

Biogeochemical Stoichiometry Of Antarctic Dry Valley Ecosystems, John E. Barrett, Ross A. Virginia, W. Berry Lyons, Diane M. Mcknight, John Charles Priscu, Peter T. Doran, Andrew G. Fountain, Diana H. Wall, D. L. Moorhead

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Among aquatic and terrestrial landscapes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, ecosystem stoichiometry ranges from values near the Redfield ratios for C:N:P to nutrient concentrations in proportions far above or below ratios necessary to support balanced microbial growth. This polar desert provides an opportunity to evaluate stoichiometric approaches to understand nutrient cycling in an ecosystem where biological diversity and activity are low, and controls over the movement and mass balances of nutrients operate over 10–10⁶ years. The simple organisms (microbial and metazoan) comprising dry valley foodwebs adhere to strict biochemical requirements in the composition of their biomass, and when activated …

Hydrologic Impacts Of Climate Change In The Upper Clackamas River Basin, Oregon, Usa, David Graves, Heejun Chang Feb 2007

Hydrologic Impacts Of Climate Change In The Upper Clackamas River Basin, Oregon, Usa, David Graves, Heejun Chang

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Pacific Northwest of the USA is dependent on seasonal snowmelt for water resources that support its economy and aquatic ecosystems. Increased temperatures resulting from higher concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases may cause disruptions to these resources because of reductions in the annual snowpack and the earlier occurrence of seasonal snowmelt. We applied a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based distributed hydrologic model at a monthly scale to assess the effects of future climate change on runoff from the Upper Clackamas River Basin (UCB; located near Portland, Oregon, USA). Once validated using historic flow data, the model was run for 2 future …

Advancing Transdisciplinary And Translational Research Practice: Issues And Models Of Doctoral Education In Public Health, Linda Neuhauser, Dawn M. Richardson, Sonja Mackenzie, Meredith Minkler Jan 2007

Advancing Transdisciplinary And Translational Research Practice: Issues And Models Of Doctoral Education In Public Health, Linda Neuhauser, Dawn M. Richardson, Sonja Mackenzie, Meredith Minkler

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Finding solutions to complex health problems, such as obesity, violence, and climate change, will require radical changes in cross-disciplinary education, research, and practice. The fundamental determinants of health include many interrelated factors such as poverty, culture, education, environment, and government policies. However, traditional public health training has tended to focus more narrowly on diseases and risk factors, and has not adequately leveraged the rich contributions of sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, communication, political science, and other disciplines. Further, students are often not sufficiently trained to work across sectors to translate research findings into effective, large-scale sustainable actions. During the past 2 …

Using Simulation To Evaluate Global Software Development Task Allocation Strategies, Siri-On Setamanit, Wayne Wakeland, David Raffo Jan 2007

Using Simulation To Evaluate Global Software Development Task Allocation Strategies, Siri-On Setamanit, Wayne Wakeland, David Raffo

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe a hybrid computer simulation model of the software development process that is specifically architected to study alternative ways to configure global software development (GSD) projects, including phase-based, module-based, and follow-the-sun allocation strategies. The model is a hybrid system dynamics and discrete-event model. In this paper, test cases have been developed for each allocation strategy, and project duration is computed for each configuration under a range of plausible assumptions for key parameters. The primary finding is that although under ideal assumptions follow-the-sun is able to produce impressive reductions in time-to-market, under more realistic assumptions the reverse is true, thus …

Periodic Atlas Of The Metroscape: Geography Of Opportunity: Maps From The Regional Atlas, Meg Merrick, Vivek Shandas Jan 2007

Periodic Atlas Of The Metroscape: Geography Of Opportunity: Maps From The Regional Atlas, Meg Merrick, Vivek Shandas

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

Of the three pillars of sustainability (ecology, economy, and equality), equality has been largely absent from regional development discussions in part because policy makers lack a shared understanding of what equality means.

This edition of the Periodic Atlas features several maps from the Regional Equality Atlas that begin to tell a story of existing challenges and the highly dynamic nature of the relationships among people, place, and opportunities in the metroscape.

What Is Driving Measure 37 Claims In Oregon?, Sheila A. Martin, Meg Merrick, Erik Rundell, Katie Shriver Jan 2007

What Is Driving Measure 37 Claims In Oregon?, Sheila A. Martin, Meg Merrick, Erik Rundell, Katie Shriver

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

With over 7,500 claims covering 750,000 acres of farm and forestland, Measure 37 claims harbor the potential to change the landscape in Oregon. The majority of these claims are located in the Willamette Valley, where growth pressures and the value gradient between land for farms and land for residential development is great. This paper explores those relationships by describing and mapping the claims in terms of location, size, and current and proposed use, and then analyzes factors that appear to be driving the claims. At a county level, variables such as population growth, farm income, farm tenure and average age …

Indigenous Scientific Literacies In Nalo Hopkinson’S Ceremonial Worlds, Grace L. Dillon Jan 2007

Indigenous Scientific Literacies In Nalo Hopkinson’S Ceremonial Worlds, Grace L. Dillon

Indigenous Nations Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Increasingly our critical tradition is recognizing the prevalence of issues of indigeneity in sf. Whether this emerging emphasis reflects keener powers of observation on the part of readers or shifting preferences on the part of writers, it is clear that, as the idealism of a Golden Age melts into the dross of colonial aftermath, sf is beginning to reflect the West's rising awareness that manifest destinies, whatever fashion they wear, wield a violent science in pursuing control and care little for the cultures they displace and erase. Nor is it surprising that a genre noted for its pioneering exploration of …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The United States (U.S.) and Canada will experience climate changes through direct effects of local changes (e.g., temperature, precipitation and extreme weather events), as well as through indirect effects, transmitted among regions by interconnected economies and migrations of humans and other species. Variations in wealth and geography, however, lead to an uneven distribution of likely impacts, vulnerabilities and capacities to adapt. This chapter reviews and synthesises the state of knowledge on direct and indirect impacts, vulnerability and adaptations for North America (comprising Canada and the U.S). Hawaii and other U.S. protectorates are discussed in Chapter 16 on Small Islands, and …

The Spiritual World Of A Hakka Village, Sharon A. Carstens Jan 2007

The Spiritual World Of A Hakka Village, Sharon A. Carstens

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines spiritual beliefs and practices in the Hakka Malaysian community of Pulai, focusing on the pantheon of deities and spirits worshipped and propitiated; the system of local beliefs in the power and efficacy of these deities; and the manner in which individuals and families have reproduced and altered these spiritual beliefs over time. Unlike my previous writings about religion in Pulai, which have emphasized the sociological components of local religion practices, my goal here is to explore the cosmological system, world view, and system of meanings conveyed through religious practices in this Hakka village.

As with many Chinese …

A Geographical Perspective On The Territorial Conflict In The East China Sea: The Implications For International Political Relations Between China And Japan, Joel Stewart Jan 2007

A Geographical Perspective On The Territorial Conflict In The East China Sea: The Implications For International Political Relations Between China And Japan, Joel Stewart

Geography Masters Research Papers

China and Japan are engaged in a territorial dispute in the East China Sea. Sovereignty over a tiny islet, and more importantly, access to substantial hydrocarbon resources are the crux of the dispute. This territorial conflict has broad implications for both China and Japan, and involves a number of complex issues. The objective of this paper is to understand the historical, economic and political factors of this situation, as well as to uncover the elements of the solution, which are contained in the problem. A thorough investigation of the literature on the dispute reveals there is significant potential for the …

An Investigation Into Japan's Population: The Current State Of Decline, Joel Stewart Jan 2007

An Investigation Into Japan's Population: The Current State Of Decline, Joel Stewart

Geography Masters Research Papers

Japan is facing a demographic crisis. The population is aging and shrinking at a considerable pace despite the government's efforts to curtail the problem. This rapid change in the demographic structure of Japan is bound to have stark implications on the society and economy of Japan. The objective of this paper is to understand the issues that allowed this impeding crisis to come about. A thorough examination of the current literature on Japan's fertility and population issues revealed that a number of various factors are causing the impending crisis. Some of the factors determined to be affecting the population dilemma …

Spatial And Morphological Change Of Eliot Glacier, Mount Hood, Oregon, Keith Michael Jackson Jan 2007

Spatial And Morphological Change Of Eliot Glacier, Mount Hood, Oregon, Keith Michael Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

Eliot Glacier is a small (1.6 km2), relatively well-studied glacier on Mount Hood, Oregon. Since 1901, glacier area decreased from 2.03 ± 0.16 km2 to 1.64 ± 0.05 km2 by 2004, a loss of 19%, and the terminus retreated about 600 m. Mount Hood's glaciers as a whole have lost 34% of their area. During the first part of the 20th century the glacier thinned and retreated, then thickened and advanced between the 1940s and 1960s because of cooler temperatures and increased winter precipitation and has since accelerated its retreat, averaging about 1.0 m a-1 …

Regional Literature And ‘The Liminal’: Exploring The Spaces In-Between National And International Literatures, Per Henningsgaard Jan 2007

Regional Literature And ‘The Liminal’: Exploring The Spaces In-Between National And International Literatures, Per Henningsgaard

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

Regional literature, that often overlooked and much maligned cluster of writings whose origins are frequently said to be anywhere but here, has actually played an important role in the story of Australian literature. The theme of nationalism, which reigned as the master narrative of Australian literature from early in the history of white settlers in Australia until perhaps the 1970s, merged with or fragmented into (depending on your perspective) regionalism in the 1980s. In the 1990s, internationalism emerged from this transitional phase as the new master narrative of Australian literature. Regionalism seems to have acted as a liminal state in …

A Rough Guide To Interdisciplinarity: Graduate Student Perspectives, Jessica K. Graybill, Sarah Dooling, Vivek Shandas, John Withey, Adrienne I. Greve, Gregory L. Simon Sep 2006

A Rough Guide To Interdisciplinarity: Graduate Student Perspectives, Jessica K. Graybill, Sarah Dooling, Vivek Shandas, John Withey, Adrienne I. Greve, Gregory L. Simon

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

A widely held belief is that only through interdisciplinarity can academics effectively address today's complex ecological problems, because these problems demand cross-disciplinary efforts and specialized knowledge from natural and social scientists. Innovative interdisciplinary research and curricula have been created to train a new generation of scientists to engage with complex issues. It seems critical that those most affected by interdisciplinary education—doctoral students—provide feedback about such innovations. Without understanding students' experiences in interdisciplinary programs, faculty will not know whether they are "getting it right" for future generations of interdisciplinarians. From our experiences as doctoral students, we provide reflections and perspectives on …

Ecolopolis 2.0, Portland State University Sep 2006

Ecolopolis 2.0, Portland State University

Regional Planning and Metropolitan Growth Management Research Projects

This is a working document and is the second report in this series. In section one the document begins by reviewing the origin and definition of "Cascadia" as a named place. Section two includes a description of the Cascadian landscape, and the issues and conditions in both its metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Section three present four strategies for growing, stewarding, and sustaining Cascadia along "ecolopolitan" lines. The document concludes with the next steps for this project.

This version, 2.0, has been produced by the Spring 2006 class and is edited by Dr. Ethan Seltzer
