The Collapse Of The German Army In The East In The Summer Of 1944 (Volume 2), Stephen Ariel Veal

Dissertations and Theses

The collapse of the German Army in the East in the Summer of 1944 is analyzed and determined to be the result of the following specific factors: German intelligence failures; German defensive doctrine; loss of German air superiority; Lend-Lease aid to the Soviet Union; German mobile reserves committed in the West; Soviet numerical superiority; and Soviet offensive doctrine and tactics. The collapse of Army Group Center, the destruction of the XIII Army Corps, and the collapse of Army Group South Ukraine in Romania during the Summer of 1944 are examined in detail. The significance of the collapse of the German …

Investigations Of Self, Merlin Douglass Jan 1991

Investigations Of Self, Merlin Douglass

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

While Margery Kempe, fourteenth century English country wife and mystic/pilgrim, and Lady Nijo, thirteenth century Japanese imperial concubine and itinerant Buddhist nun, might at first seem disparate subjects, this paper argues that the themes of pilgrimage and the act of writing an autobiography link them together in interesting ways. By tracing the ways in which both authors form their autobiographies and by using critical theories of autobiography a theme repeatedly appears, that of the welcoming nature of the wilderness of the faith pilgrimage and of the wandering paths both women took in their search for salvation

Evidence And Interpretation In The Archaeology Of Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1991

Evidence And Interpretation In The Archaeology Of Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most challenging statements in the Archaeology of the New World is the one made by James Deetz, an eminent Archaeologist, that: "The personalities of prehistory will remain forever nameless and without faces", (Deetz 1977). Any one with background training in prehistoric Archaeology of the Old ~rid would at first glance at the statement view it with scorn. I was no exception to this reaction. But when I started updating myself on archaeological studies in the Caribbean I started giving the statement a serious thought especially having come across Clinton Black's description of the first Jamaicans as "a …

The Effect Of Road Investment On Economic Development: A Case Study Of The Oregon Counties, Ameer Mohammed Al-Alwan Jan 1991

The Effect Of Road Investment On Economic Development: A Case Study Of The Oregon Counties, Ameer Mohammed Al-Alwan

Dissertations and Theses

Despite its significance and frequent mentioning in the literature, the relationship between road investment and economic development has never been clearly understood. A significant number of scholars in this field have always emphasized the need for further research to examine this complex and dynamic relationship. Historically, investment in transportation networks has played a great role in the development of cities, regions, and nations. This positive view is attributed to the indispensable role that water transportation, and then rail transport, played in the early development of Europe and the United States. In recent years, many scholars, as well as policy makers, …

Principal Vision, Environmental Robustness, And Teacher Sense Of Autonomy In High Schools, Daniel Nordwall Johnson Jan 1991

Principal Vision, Environmental Robustness, And Teacher Sense Of Autonomy In High Schools, Daniel Nordwall Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on leadership and its correlates. Theory and research both point to the centrality of the principal's leadership role in school effectiveness. Yet, few studies of school leadership actually examine relationships among leadership variables. This study examined, from the perspective of high school teachers, three leadership correlates: principal vision, environmental robustness and teacher autonomy. Principal vision was conceptualized as the capacity of the principal to see the difference between what is and what might be, thus enabling others to accept and act on the possibilities of what might be. Environmental robustness was defined as the perceived dramatic content …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Certain Characteristics Of Policewomen: A Second Look, Harry Oliver White Jr. Jan 1991

An Exploratory Analysis Of Certain Characteristics Of Policewomen: A Second Look, Harry Oliver White Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

Female police officers are relatively new to the profession of law enforcement. Prior to 1968, the very few who were employed by police agencies were not permitted to perform the full range of police duties. Subsequent to that time their number has increased so that today they account for approximately 8.3 percent of the total sworn police population. There have been numerous studies which have attempted to identify the sociopsychological characteristics of male police officers. For example, Neiderhoffer reported in 1967 that male officers rate high in authoritarianism, anomia, job dissatisfaction, and choose police work for job security reasons. Very …

The Process Of Neighborhood Development: The Role Of Restrictive Covenants In The Development Of Residential Neighborhoods, Eric David Hart Jan 1991

The Process Of Neighborhood Development: The Role Of Restrictive Covenants In The Development Of Residential Neighborhoods, Eric David Hart

Dissertations and Theses

Restrictive covenants (RCs) consist of legal language that is put in a land parcel deed by the subdivider of a subdivision at the time it is platted. The restrictions usually limit land use and require that the house constructed on the lot be of a certain cost. This thesis addresses four research questions: 1. Is the restrictive covenant (RC) minimum house cost amount directly related to the size of the housing? 2. Do differences in housing size translate into social status differences? 3. Do RCs create homogeneous areas of social status? 4. Are subdivisions with RCs less likely to decline …

Parplum : A System For Evaluating Parallel Program Optimization Methods, Jingsong Fu Jan 1991

Parplum : A System For Evaluating Parallel Program Optimization Methods, Jingsong Fu

Dissertations and Theses

The diversity of application programs and parallel architectures makes the mapping problem complicated and hard to evaluate. The quality of mapping is machine and application dependent and varies due to inaccurate values of application and architecture characteristics.

A system for developing, applying and evaluating mappings must have four characteristics: (1) Simplicity: A mapping procedure can be evaluated by separately evaluating its submapping, so the complicated problem can be simplified. (2) Generality: A wide range of application programs and architectures can be easily represented and all mapping algorithms can be easily implemented. (3) Multifunctionality: all the mapping steps, application programs, target …

A Study Of Qualitative Miscue Analysis Scoring Systems For Identification Of Instructional Reading Levels, Sylvia Estelle Dean Jan 1991

A Study Of Qualitative Miscue Analysis Scoring Systems For Identification Of Instructional Reading Levels, Sylvia Estelle Dean

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the accuracy and practicality of May's Poor Reader (PR) scoring system for the informal reading inventory (IRI), an individual assessment device designed to determine a student's instructional reading level. The PR is a qualitative scoring system developed by Frank May that examines only two miscues (defaults and meaning-denigrating substitutions) in arriving at an estimate of instructional reading level. The predictor variable, PR, was compared for accuracy and practicality with five other predictor variables consisting of four traditional quantitative scoring systems and an additional qualitative system of May's; PR was also compared …

A Practical Parallel Algorithm For The Minimization Of KröNecker Reed-Muller Expansions, Paul John Gilliam Jan 1991

A Practical Parallel Algorithm For The Minimization Of KröNecker Reed-Muller Expansions, Paul John Gilliam

Dissertations and Theses

A number of recent developments has increased the desirability of using exclusive OR (XOR) gates in the synthesis of switching functions. This has, in turn, led naturally to an increased interest in algorithms for the minimization of Exclusive-Or Sum of Products (ESOP) forms. Although this is an active area of research, it is not nearly as developed as the traditional Sum of Products forms. Computer programs to find minimum ESOPs are not readily available and those that do exist are impractical to use as investigative tools because they are too slow and/or require too much memory. A practical tool would …

Patterns Of Rhetoric/Patterns Of Culture : A Look At The English Writing Of Japanese Students, Suzanne Raschke Jan 1991

Patterns Of Rhetoric/Patterns Of Culture : A Look At The English Writing Of Japanese Students, Suzanne Raschke

Dissertations and Theses

That a link exists between language and culture has long been accepted; however, not only the extent, but also the exact nature of that link remains unclear. In recent years, rhetoricians have raised questions about how culture affects the patterns of organization and other rhetorical features of writing. At present, the search for answers to these questions is made difficult by the cultural bias imposed by the language of any analysis of writing that may be undertaken and by a lack of criteria that can be used in performing such an analysis.

Neural Network Character Recognition With A 2-D Fourier Transform Preprocessor, Daqiao Du Jan 1991

Neural Network Character Recognition With A 2-D Fourier Transform Preprocessor, Daqiao Du

Dissertations and Theses

In pattern recognition applications, it is usually important that the same identification be given for a pattern, independent of a variety of positions, rotations and /or distortions of the pattern within the recognition device's field of view. This research relates to development of a preprocessor for a neural network character recognition system, where the role of the preprocessor is to assist in minimizing the difficulties related to variations of position and rotations of a character within the field of view. The preprocessor explored here was suggested in 1970' (Lendaris & Stanly, 1970), and is implemented here with more recent advances …

Percentage Of Phonological Process Usage In Expressive Language Delayed Children, Sherri Lynn Miller Jan 1991

Percentage Of Phonological Process Usage In Expressive Language Delayed Children, Sherri Lynn Miller

Dissertations and Theses

Language delay and phonological delay have been shown to coexist. Because they so often co-occur, it is possible that they may interact, sharing a relationship during the child's development. A group of children who were "late talkers" as toddlers, achieved normal development in their syntactic ability by the preschool period. Because their language abilities are known to have increased rapidly, data on their phonological development could provide information on the relationship between phonological and syntactic development.

The purpose of this study was to compare the percentage of phonological process usage of the eight most commonly used simplification processes in four-year-old …

Metaphoric Extension As A Basis For Vocabulary Teaching In English As A Second Language, Dennis L. Bergmann Jan 1991

Metaphoric Extension As A Basis For Vocabulary Teaching In English As A Second Language, Dennis L. Bergmann

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis addresses the problem of teaching and learning vocabulary in English as a Second Language (ESL), and proposes that a vocabulary based on the process of metaphoric extension could be taught directly. Despite the fact that an inadequate vocabulary is one of the main obstacles for intermediate-level ESL students, both ESL teachers and applied linguists have emphasized other aspects of English more than the study of vocabulary teaching and learning. Consequently, ESL students have few strategies for learning vocabulary other than reliance on the dictionary, and the predominant strategy for teachers is to present words rather unsystematically in the …

Development Of A Direct, Low Pressure, Laser-Induced Fluorescence Measurement Technique For No2., Ambient Measurements And Urban Nox Chemistry, Linda Acha George Jan 1991

Development Of A Direct, Low Pressure, Laser-Induced Fluorescence Measurement Technique For No2., Ambient Measurements And Urban Nox Chemistry, Linda Acha George

Dissertations and Theses

Nitrogen oxides control the global formation of ozone in the lower atmosphere and influence the much higher levels of ozone formed in areas subjected to photochemical air pollution. As an important member of the nitrogen oxide family, N02 plays a significant role in serving as the only known source of ozone (through photolysis) in the lower atmosphere and as sink for HO via the formation of nitric acid. Ozone can be destroyed by reaction with another member of the nitrogen oxide family, nitric oxide (NO), to reform N02. This cycle between NO, N02 and 03 is known as the NOx-03 …

Development And Applications Of High Resolution Kinetic Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometry In Atmospheric Chemistry, David Michael Myton Jan 1991

Development And Applications Of High Resolution Kinetic Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometry In Atmospheric Chemistry, David Michael Myton

Dissertations and Theses

Much important work has been done to understand reaction pathways and identify products, yields, and reaction rates for atmospheric oxidation processes. Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) are the most significant of the organic compounds present in the atmosphere from a chemical perspective and are released into the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic sources. The oxidation of these hydrocarbons by hydroxyl radical HO generates products that may themselves be toxic, that play a major role in the formation of photochemical smog, and that to a lesser extent contribute to the formation of acid precipitation. NMHCs have chemical reactivities many times that of …

Solvent And Substituent Effects On The Redox Potentials Of Several Substituted Tetraphenylporphyrins, Robert Arthur Ransdell Jan 1991

Solvent And Substituent Effects On The Redox Potentials Of Several Substituted Tetraphenylporphyrins, Robert Arthur Ransdell

Dissertations and Theses

Tetraphenylporphyrins can be used to absorb visible light and pass on their excitation energy to electron transfer agents. The purpose of this research has been to investigate our ability to understand and control the energetics of porphyrin derivatives in order to use their electron transfer ability to harness the energy of sunlight. Shifts in the redox (reduction and oxidation) potentials of tetraphenylporphyrins result from variations in the substituents attached at the para- position of the phenyl rings of tetraphenylporphyrins, as well as variations in the state of ionization of those substituents, and the solvent in which the reactions are carried …

Steady State Analysis Of Tropospheric Chemistry, Wen Hsiung Pan Jan 1991

Steady State Analysis Of Tropospheric Chemistry, Wen Hsiung Pan

Dissertations and Theses

Hydroxyl radical HO plays a central role in controlling chemical processes in the troposphere. Current mechanisms are believed to accurately describe its formation, destruction and interaction with other atmospheric trace gases in clean air. Hydroperoxyl radical H0₂ is Iinked to HO in several chain processes and serves among other roles as a reservoir for HO. The relative concentration (H0₂/HO) in clean air is believed to be the order of 10². We here examine the conditions under which steady-state kinetics apply to HO₁ chemistry and derive simple relationships which can be used to predict HO and H0₂ concentration from measurable concentrations …

Analysis Of A Coordination Framework For Mapping Coarse-Grain Applications To Distributed Systems, Linda Ruth Schaefer

Dissertations and Theses

A paradigm is presented for the parallelization of coarse-grain engineering and scientific applications. The coordination framework provides structure and an organizational strategy for a parallel solution in a distributed environment. Three categories of primitives which define the coordination framework are presented: structural, transformational. and operational. The prototype of the paradigm presented in this thesis is the first step towards a programming development tool. This tool will allow non-specialist programmers to parallelize existing sequential solutions through the distribution, synchronization and collection of tasks. The distributed control, multidimensional pipeline characteristics of the paradigm provide advantages which include load balancing through the use …

Story Retelling Skills In 4-Year-Olds With Histories Of Normal And Delayed Language Development, Rita Louise Smith Jan 1991

Story Retelling Skills In 4-Year-Olds With Histories Of Normal And Delayed Language Development, Rita Louise Smith

Dissertations and Theses

There is a growing group of researchers who believe that narrative skills are the bridge from oral language to literacy (Culatta, Page, & Ellis, 1983; Roth & Spekman, 1989; Westby, 1989). Narrative production requires higher level language skills to create a cohesive discourse unit using decontextualized language. Narrative ability has also been found to be the best predictor for normal speech and language development for preschoolers with language impairments (Bishop & Edmundson, 1987) and reading comprehension achievement for learning-disabled, school-age children (Feagans & Applebaum, 1986) . These same skills are prerequisites for achievement of literacy and school success.

The purpose …
