A Comparison Between Trained Ear Estimation And Orthographic Transcription When Measuring Speech Intelligibility Of Young Children, Nancy Kay Sugarman
A Comparison Between Trained Ear Estimation And Orthographic Transcription When Measuring Speech Intelligibility Of Young Children, Nancy Kay Sugarman
Dissertations and Theses
When the primary mode of communication is speech, the crucial ingredient for successful communication is intelligible speech. The speech of children with disordered phonologies is often unintelligible. Accurate and reliable measurement of speech with compromised intelligibility is essential if appropriate treatment procedures are to be chosen and implemented. The focus of this investigation was the measurement of speech intelligibility in young children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the subjective method of trained ear estimation and the objective method of orthographic transcription when measuring the speech intelligibility of young speakers with a wide range of …
Conversational Structure In Electronic Mail Exchanges, Linda I. Godson
Conversational Structure In Electronic Mail Exchanges, Linda I. Godson
Dissertations and Theses
Electronic mail has become a widely used medium of communication in academia, government, and business. It is unique as a communication medium because it makes conversations across time, space, and organizational levels possible. The ability of electronic mail to "forward" a message allows for the creation of chains that preserve the entire conversation for each participant. This appears to be a new linguistic form in which the interactive features of spoken conversation are realized using electronically transmitted text.
The purpose of the present study was to determine the extent of the similarities and differences between spoken conversation and electronic mail …
The Use Of Global Issues In A University Esl Classroom: The Students' Perspective, Kelley Denise Fitzpatrick
The Use Of Global Issues In A University Esl Classroom: The Students' Perspective, Kelley Denise Fitzpatrick
Dissertations and Theses
There is increasing interest on the part of ESL educators in the inclusion of contemporary, global issues in their classrooms. Theory about content-based ESL, as well as trends in education, generally, lend support to such enthusiasm. However, ESL educators may be erroneously assuming that their interest in this material is shared by their students. Global issues can also be controversial. Their inclusion in the classroom has the potential to create an uncomfortable, and therefore ineffective, learning atmosphere in a multicultural ESL setting. This qualitative case study examined the use of global issues as the content material in a university-based ESL …
The Effects Of Type Of Child Care Arrangement And Satisfaction With Care On Employee Job Satisfaction And Absenteeism, Hanh Hong Nguyen
The Effects Of Type Of Child Care Arrangement And Satisfaction With Care On Employee Job Satisfaction And Absenteeism, Hanh Hong Nguyen
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the effects of different types of child care arrangements (i.e., care by relatives; care by nonrelatives; self-care by child; and care by day care centers) and satisfaction with care on employee absenteeism and job satisfaction. A 53% response rate was obtained from a questionnaire administered to 501 classified staff employees at Portland State University. Only responses from employees with children under the age of 18 living at home were used. Eighty-six employees met this selection criterion.
It was hypothesized that parents using self-care by child would have the highest absences, followed by parents using day care centers, …
Impact Of Goal-Setting On Motivation As Affected By The Joint Influence Of The Attributional Dimensions Of Causality, Stability, And Control, Nancy Davis Hodges
Impact Of Goal-Setting On Motivation As Affected By The Joint Influence Of The Attributional Dimensions Of Causality, Stability, And Control, Nancy Davis Hodges
Dissertations and Theses
A systematic, empirical study conducted in eight hospital operating rooms found that employees often select opportunity-dependent goals. These goals are self-set or chosen by the individual, but the opportunity to perform the goal chosen is dependent on others. For example, "learn to circulate on total joint surgeries" is a self-set, opportunity-dependent goal. The individual must be assigned to that job. It was found that when this type of goal is chosen and the individual is not given the opportunity to perform it, the individual attributes the failure to external causes. This failed opportunity-goal type was significantly related to lower motivation, …
Chlorophyll Characterization Of Three Mistletoes And The Chloroplast Ultrastructure Within Aerial And Endophytic Tissues Of Phoradendron Juniperinum, Wesley Emanuel Dubbs
Chlorophyll Characterization Of Three Mistletoes And The Chloroplast Ultrastructure Within Aerial And Endophytic Tissues Of Phoradendron Juniperinum, Wesley Emanuel Dubbs
Dissertations and Theses
The aerial shoot pigments of three epiphytic mistletoes and their hosts were examined and the results were found to concur with earlier reports. Emphasis was placed on the mistletoe Phoradendron juniperinum. Absorbance spectroscopy indicated a very similar ratio of pigments in both the aerial tissue of the mistletoe and its juniper host. Spectroscopic examination found the presence of chlorophyll in the endophytic tissue of the genus Phoradendron for the first time. Total chlorophyll concentrations of the endophytic tissue of Phoradendron juniperinum were found to be approximately 10% that of aerial shoots. However, chlorophyll a/b ratios of endophytic tissue were …
A Comparison Of The Cohesion In The Expository Discourse Of The Optimally-Healthy Young-Old And The Optimally-Healthy Oldest-Old, Penni Gay Siemens
A Comparison Of The Cohesion In The Expository Discourse Of The Optimally-Healthy Young-Old And The Optimally-Healthy Oldest-Old, Penni Gay Siemens
Dissertations and Theses
The group of people aged 85 years and older is the fastest growing chronological population on the United States (Neal et al., 1993), and while a considerable amount of research has focused on the language of the elderly (those over 65 years), relatively little study has focused specifically on those aged 85 and older. This study is valuable in that it includes a large sample of optimally healthy people aged 85 and older. This sample of the optimally-healthy oldest-old will help define what changes, if any, are a function of age alone and what changes are clinical (associated with some …

Modeling Music With Grammars: Some Examples From Balinese Kotekan, Janet Tom Cowal
Modeling Music With Grammars: Some Examples From Balinese Kotekan, Janet Tom Cowal
Dissertations and Theses
What is the relationship of music and language? Analogies and comparisons of music and language are plentiful in various types of literature. For researchers in the cognitive sciences, the importance of organization, patterning, and structuring of sounds is a common theme in analyzing both language and music. With the success of generative grammars for languages, a number of researchers have used similar kinds of grammars to describe or model particular aspects of music. In addition, researchers are interested in possible universals in musical grammars. However, while grammars of non-Western musics have been written, most of the work has been based …
The Mediation Of U.S. American Culture In The Esl Classroom, Steven Fredolph Roberts
The Mediation Of U.S. American Culture In The Esl Classroom, Steven Fredolph Roberts
Dissertations and Theses
The concept of cultural mediation is one that all ESL teachers must deal with as an inherent part of their employment. Yet, relatively little of the current literature has examined how teachers actually perceive this aspect of their work once they have left the teacher preparation program behind. This question provided the main rationale for the present study. The current study, an adaptation of DeFoe (1986), examined the mediation of U.S. American culture in the ESL classroom by means of a written survey of 42 teachers from ten community colleges, both in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area and from around the …
Adult Esl Writing Journals: A Case Study Of Topic Assignment, Kathryn Elaine Brunette
Adult Esl Writing Journals: A Case Study Of Topic Assignment, Kathryn Elaine Brunette
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past ten years, the use of student writing journals has become increasingly widespread in the TESOL field. Such journals serve a wide variety of purposes: a cultural diary, a free writing exercise, a forum for reaction or comment on readings or classroom discussions, in addition to a form of teacher/student dialogue. The main purpose of this study has been to determine the relationship of topic assignment to the quantity and quality of resulting entries. The data, 144 journal entries generated by ten adult ESL students over a period of ten weeks, were measured for length, in terms of …

Dissertations and Theses
The 25 Ma Bumping Lake pluton ranges in composition from quartz diorite to granite with the granitic facies comprising approximately 90% of the pluton's surface area. The granite may be classified as calcalkaline, peraluminous and I-type with some Stype characteristics. A late-stage, mafic-poor facies fills cooling related extensional fractures. The pluton was passively emplaced into the Ohanapecosh Formation at a shallow level in the crust. Contact relationships vary from sharp where the contact is vertical to gradational at the roof of the pluton. Where gradational, stoped xenoliths from the roof of the pluton increase in size, angularity and retain more …
Theory And Poetry: John Ashbery's "Self-Portrait In A Convex Mirror", Jeffrey Wayne Timmons
Theory And Poetry: John Ashbery's "Self-Portrait In A Convex Mirror", Jeffrey Wayne Timmons
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines John Ashbery's poem "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror" and its revision of the traditional distinction between theory and poetry. Drawing a relationship between the poem's subject and the practices of postmodern theoretical discourse, the thesis posits the poem as an artifact of these changes. Creating a context for the poem, these developments not only inform the climate in which Ashbery's poem takes on significance, but, as well, explain the changing nature of literary study. Historical in its approach to the pressures and impulses within this climate of aesthetic production, the thesis traces the distinction between science and …
Changing Values: A Study Of The Shift In Cultural Values And Perceptions Of U.S. High School Students Following Orientation And Exposure To Russian Culture, Linda Sue Warnock
Changing Values: A Study Of The Shift In Cultural Values And Perceptions Of U.S. High School Students Following Orientation And Exposure To Russian Culture, Linda Sue Warnock
Dissertations and Theses
When cultural values differ, it is difficult for people not to judge one another's behavior on the basis of their own individual and/or cultural values. Given the profound differences in Russian and American culture, the question of what happens when these two cultures interact comes to mind.
The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship of culture specific orientation, coupled with a two week sojourn in Russia on the sojourners' perceptions of cultural values. The sojourners were high school athletes participating in the first part of a Russian - American Track and Field Exchange.
In order to ascertain …
"I Don't Speak My Own Language": Ethnicity Among The Malayalees Of Singapore, David L. Moore
"I Don't Speak My Own Language": Ethnicity Among The Malayalees Of Singapore, David L. Moore
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is an ethnographic examination of the significance of Malayalee ethnicity in Singapore. Ethnic identity is important in the daily lives of Singaporeans, due in part to the government-directed public focus in Singapore on the ideal of multiculturalism through which it is asserted that to be Singaporean, one must be, in the main, Chinese, Malay, or Indian. But other identities, such as Malayalee, a subset of the larger category "Indian", have not decreased in importance. They, in fact, remain important in identifying what kind of Chinese, Malay, or Indian a person is, as Chinese, Malay, or Indian identifies what …
Investigations Of Factors Affecting The Transcriptional Regulation Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Βγ (Leaky-Late) Genes, Rosemary Ann Lown
Investigations Of Factors Affecting The Transcriptional Regulation Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Βγ (Leaky-Late) Genes, Rosemary Ann Lown
Dissertations and Theses
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a virus commonly causing cold sores in humans, however, virulent infections are known to produce debilitating encephalitis and death.
HSV-1 transcription is carried out by the host cell RNA polymerase II in a tightly regulated temporal cascade. The first genes transcribed, the a genes, are activated in the absence of viral DNA synthesis. Transcription of the other temporal classes, the β, βγ, and γ genes is dependent upon the protein products of the a genes for activation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that contribute to this rigid regulation …
An Experimental Study Of Scotopic Sensitivity/Irlen Syndrome In Learning Disabled Students, Kathleen Hickam Farber
An Experimental Study Of Scotopic Sensitivity/Irlen Syndrome In Learning Disabled Students, Kathleen Hickam Farber
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the effect on reading performance of a controversial treatment for a dysfunction of visual perception known as Scotopic sensitivity/lrlen Syndrome. The treatment, referred to as spectral modification, involved the use of colored transparent overlays for reading by four elementary school children in their actual school environments.
The diagnostic, prescriptive and remediation procedures used in this study were originally developed by Helen Irlen, a California psychologist and researcher. Irlen conceptualized Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome as a difficulty in visual processing of the printed page when perceived through full spectrum light. Spectral modification techniques were considered controversial in that they …
"Self Was Forgotten": Attention To Private Consciousness In The Diaries Of Three Mormon Frontier Women, Genevieve Jane Long
"Self Was Forgotten": Attention To Private Consciousness In The Diaries Of Three Mormon Frontier Women, Genevieve Jane Long
Dissertations and Theses
This study discusses diaries by three Mormon women on America's southwestern frontier. These diaries cover a period stretching from 1880-1920. The study explores how these diarists (in a culture that was and remains highly communitarian and which valued, for women, the primary roles of helpmeet and mother), leave the imprint of individual as well as cooperative consciousness in private writings. As authors, diarists display remarkable persistence in maintaining and elaborating on a daily text. Since diaries are a type of private writing engaged in even by women who--because of education, social class, or life circumstances--do little other writing, women's diaries …
Technological Organization And Sedentism: Expedient Core Reduction, Stockpiling, And Tool Curation At The Meier Site (35co5), Stephen Coursault Hamilton
Technological Organization And Sedentism: Expedient Core Reduction, Stockpiling, And Tool Curation At The Meier Site (35co5), Stephen Coursault Hamilton
Dissertations and Theses
The Meier site fine-grained lithic assemblage was used to test the hypothesis that a sedentary group will rely heavily on expedient lithic technologies because they stockpile raw material at the residence. At Meier, expedient core reduction provided blanks for a significant number of curated and expedient tools. I propose that sedentism (stockpiling) minimizes energy investments in raw material procurement and blank production while maintaining the ability to efficiently make both curated and expedient tools. Investment in curation is limited to a few tool classes with specialized functions, not transportable design variables.
The Family And Women In The Fifteenth Century: A Case Study Of The Pastons, Diana Thurman
The Family And Women In The Fifteenth Century: A Case Study Of The Pastons, Diana Thurman
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis questions the prevailing historical models of the medieval family, using the Paston family as a test case. It reviews the theories of three prominent historians of the medieval family: Lawrence Stone, Ralph Houlbrooke and Joel Rosenthal. Whether the Paston family and particularly the women fit the models of families as defined by the above mentioned historians is the underlying question. If the Paston family does not fit these models, what does that tell us about the current assumptions made concerning the fifteenth century family?
The thesis illustrates that the family models of Stone do not always apply to …
Perceived Communication During Organizational Change, Paula Blunck
Perceived Communication During Organizational Change, Paula Blunck
Dissertations and Theses
Organizational change often involves the creation of work teams. This research examines how the creation of self-managed work teams within a particular organization affects perceived communication. Previous research suggests that self-managed teams would socially construct a different view of the organization especially as it relates to power than would those in traditional organizational departments. Attitudes about communication and power within the organization are analyzed in nine self-managed teams and five traditional departments. This analysis is conducted through both qualitative and quantitative means. Group comments and discussions are used in a qualitative analysis. Multidimensional scaling is used to reveal underlying attitudinal …

The Development Of Natural Law From Plato To The Renaissance, James M. Harrison
The Development Of Natural Law From Plato To The Renaissance, James M. Harrison
Dissertations and Theses
The development of natural law has had a profound influence on the course of European civilization. I have started my research with natural law as it was conceived by Socrates and Plato. I then followed the major developments and changes that occurred to this original design through to the height of the Renaissance in the Sixteenth century. I relied mostly on secondary sources for several reasons. First the translations of the original materials are all well established. This includes translations of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Ockham, Suarez, Luther, as well as others. Secondly, and more importantly, the emphasis of my research …
Illness And The Treatment Response: The Patient's View, Nina Patricia Van Es
Illness And The Treatment Response: The Patient's View, Nina Patricia Van Es
Dissertations and Theses
In American society, where the biomedical profession is institutionalized and its therapies dominate health care, a decision to deviate from prevailing norms can be considered remarkable. Yet research done by Eisenberg et al. (1993) found that unconventional or alternative medicine had an "enormous presence" in U.S. health care and that one in three persons had utilized an unconventional therapy in 1990. The objective of this thesis was to explore this phenomenon.
Individuals who had used alternative and biomedical intervention to treat a disorder were recruited through practitioners of alternative therapies. Through semi-structured interviews, case histories focusing on the illness trajectory …
The Evaluation Of Device Model Dependence In The Design Of A High-Frequency, Analog, Cmos Transconductance-C Filter, Susan Rose Brotman
The Evaluation Of Device Model Dependence In The Design Of A High-Frequency, Analog, Cmos Transconductance-C Filter, Susan Rose Brotman
Dissertations and Theses
It is important to have the ability to predict the effects of device model variation when designing integrated transconductance-C type active filters. Applying these filters to integrated circuit design has become increasingly popular due to its ease of implementation in monolithic form. With the introduction of fully automated design tools, predictable behavior of high-level variables becomes still more important. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the process parameter spread of analog device models to determine the effect on the design parameters of an active filter. This information's significant contribution directly effects the feasibility and realization of automating analog …
A Study Of The Meaning Found In The References To Space In Selected Plays Of Athol Fugard, Heather Halm Stueve
A Study Of The Meaning Found In The References To Space In Selected Plays Of Athol Fugard, Heather Halm Stueve
Dissertations and Theses
The South African playwright Athol Fugard of ten explores the problems which apartheid has created within his society -problems ranging from the racial and societal to the spiritual. He seems to communicate his thoughts about these issues through many direct references to space. This study investigates the meanings these spaces communicate. Four plays were chosen as representative of Fugard's subject matter (covering both white and non-white society) and career: Blood Knot (1963), People are Living There (1970), The Road to Mecca (1985), and My Children, My Africa (1990). Then three steps were carefully followed. First, each reference to space was …
Characteristics Of Marginally Achieving Secondary Students And The Nature Of Their School Experience, Aeylin Summers
Characteristics Of Marginally Achieving Secondary Students And The Nature Of Their School Experience, Aeylin Summers
Dissertations and Theses
In American high schools, students are sorted into three "tracks" to cluster resources for students of similar abilities and interests. Much is known about the high track student, and especially in the past decade, the low track or "at-risk" student. However, the middle track--or marginally achieving student--has been largely overlooked in the literature. Acknowledged as "lost in the middle" (Judson, 1992), as well as deserving of higher quality of service in their school systems (Powell, Farrar, & Cohen, 1985), marginal achievers-defined here as having a GPA of 1.5-2.5, still maintain a profile of invisibility. Current reform efforts to increase student …

The purpose of this study is to examine which language skills university professors believe are most essential for academic success in Portland State University classes. The study can shed light on a question for future research: Do current academic ESL classes at Portland State University teach the necessary skills to help international students maximize their second-language learning potential in university-level courses. Enrollment statistics for 1993 I 94 show 53 percent of the 815 international students declared majors in two programs: the school of Business Administration and the school of Engineering and Applied Science. This study asked 31 instructors from business …
High-Frequency Analog Voltage Converter Design, Ping Xu
High-Frequency Analog Voltage Converter Design, Ping Xu
Dissertations and Theses
For many high-speed, high-performance circuits, purely differential inputs are needed. This project focuses on building high-speed voltage converters which can transfer a single-ended signal to a purely differential signal, or a differential input signal to a single-ended signal.
Operational transconductance amplifier (OTAs) techniques are widely used in high-speed continuous-time integrated analog signal processing (ASP) circuits because resistors, inductors, integrators, buffers, multipliers and filters can be built by OTAs and capacitors. Taking advantage of OTAs, very-high-speed voltage converters are designed in CMOS technology. These converters can work in a frequency range from DC (0Hz) up to 100MHz and higher, and keep …
Vocabulary Learning For Short-Term Esl Students: A Comparison Of Three Methods, Michael William Bess
Vocabulary Learning For Short-Term Esl Students: A Comparison Of Three Methods, Michael William Bess
Dissertations and Theses
Long-term studies with both native and non-native speakers of English have shown that vocabulary can be learned passively or "incidentally" simply through the act of reading, even through reading for pleasure. Generally, studies of incidental vocabulary learning have tested subjects' knowledge of words learned after reading novels or other longer works of prose fiction. Eighty-four students from a short-term ESL program participated as subjects in this study. Subjects were divided into three treatment groups and one control group. All subjects were given a 100-i tern word-recognition pretest, containing 45 test words and 55 dis tractors. The three treated groups were …
