Russian-Speaking Pentecostal Refugees And Adult Esl Programs: Barriers To Participation, Elena Valerijevna Zaitseva
Russian-Speaking Pentecostal Refugees And Adult Esl Programs: Barriers To Participation, Elena Valerijevna Zaitseva
Dissertations and Theses
Pentecostals from the former Soviet Union are the most recent and fastest growing refugee group in Oregon. Because the refugee population's low English skills may increase their dependence upon welfare assistance, their nonparticipation in ESL programs is treated as a social issue. Efforts to increase the English literacy levels of Russian-speaking Pentecostal refugees are limited by lack of empirical data regarding forces that affect this population's decision to participate or not to participate in educational activities. The purpose of this study was to gather information about barriers to participation in ESL programs by adult Russian-speaking Pentecostal refugees. To this end …
Performance Evaluation Of Specialized Hardware For Fast Global Operations On Distributed Memory Multicomputers, Rajesh Madukkarumukumana Sankaran
Performance Evaluation Of Specialized Hardware For Fast Global Operations On Distributed Memory Multicomputers, Rajesh Madukkarumukumana Sankaran
Dissertations and Theses
Workstation cluster multicomputers are increasingly being applied for solving scientific problems that require massive computing power. Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is a popular message-passing model used to program these clusters. One of the major performance limiting factors for cluster multicomputers is their inefficiency in performing parallel program operations involving collective communications. These operations include synchronization, global reduction, broadcast/multicast operations and orderly access to shared global variables. Hall has demonstrated that a .secondary network with wide tree topology and centralized coordination processors (COP) could improve the performance of global operations on a variety of distributed architectures [Hall94a]. My hypothesis was that …
Communicative Action As Feminist Epistemology, Todd Nathaniel Gilman
Communicative Action As Feminist Epistemology, Todd Nathaniel Gilman
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis proposes that feminist social and political theory adopt the epistemology inherent in Jurgen Habermas's communicative ethics in order to more coherently work toward the goal of freeing individuals from social oppression. This thesis first examines the fundamental differences that exist between the particular claims for knowledge made by the three major schools of feminist theory; the empirical feminists, the standpoint feminists, and those allied with postmodernism. After illuminating the specifics of these feminist claims, the conception of knowledge central to Habermas's thought is explored and shown to be split into three distinct realms; the objective, the social, and …
U.S. Military Intelligence In Mexico, 1917-1927: An Analysis, Corbett S. Gottfried
U.S. Military Intelligence In Mexico, 1917-1927: An Analysis, Corbett S. Gottfried
Dissertations and Theses
The Military Intelligence Division (MID) was the U.S. Army's intelligence agency that reported to the Chief of Staff within the War Department. During the years 1917- 1927, the MID routinely conducted surveillance of Mexico, including: espionage, mail censorship, radio intercepts, intelligence gathering, and development of plans for the invasion of Mexico. This study utilizes a tripartite model to evaluate the production and analysis of military "intelligence" by the MID in Mexico during the period 1917-1927. First, the organization and development of the Military Intelligence Division from its origins in 1885 through the year 1927 is explored with sections on institutional …
Institutionalized Discrimination: Three Cases In The United States Military, Sarah H. Frost
Institutionalized Discrimination: Three Cases In The United States Military, Sarah H. Frost
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores institutionalized discrimination in the United States Military by examining the rationales given for policies that exclude, or limit the military service of racial minorities, women and homosexuals, and the rationales given for altering such policies.
Outgroups such as racial minorities, women and homosexuals are presumed to be a threat to the white male heterosexual majority within the military services. The presence of these outgroups in the military has been officially characterized as threatening to small-unit cohesion, and therefore threatening to military readiness.
This thesis was first based upon the assumption that the rationales favoring discriminatory policies, and …
American Deaf Students In Ennl Classes: A Case Study, Janice Elisabeth Ruhl
American Deaf Students In Ennl Classes: A Case Study, Janice Elisabeth Ruhl
Dissertations and Theses
Many deaf students who seek post secondary education need some sort of developmental education in reading and writing to ensure success in college. These students often end up in college preparatory or remedial classes that are designed for native speakers of English. For many of the deaf students entering college, English is a second language or a first language that they have failed to achieve fluency in.
This study describes the experience of two deaf students enrolled in English as a Non-Native Language classes for the first time at an Oregon community college. The Office of Students with Disabilities and …
Bridging The Generation Gap In The Works Of Gabrielle Roy, Camille G. Dean
Bridging The Generation Gap In The Works Of Gabrielle Roy, Camille G. Dean
Dissertations and Theses
Gabrielle Roy's novels are filled with images of childhood and aging, of family, of rural and urban French-Canadian settings, and of Roy's experiences as a young, impressionable teacher. The generation gaps present themselves in many human relationships and thread themselves throughout Roy's works. For this thesis, the generation gaps will be studied in three important relationships.
Part One presents largely the relationships within the microcosm of the family. It explores the gap between mothers and daughters. La Rue Deschambault, La Route d'Altamont, and Bonheur d'Occasion are included. The relationship between the father and child in La Rue Deschambault …
Performance Analysis Of A Banyan Based Atm Switching Fabric With Packet Priority, Zhaohui Yan
Performance Analysis Of A Banyan Based Atm Switching Fabric With Packet Priority, Zhaohui Yan
Dissertations and Theses
Since the emergence of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode ( A TM ) concept, various switching architectures have been proposed. The multistage interconnection networks have been proposed for the switching architecture under the A TM environment. In this thesis, we propose a new model for the performance analysis of an A TM switching fabric based on single-buffered Banyan network. In this model, we use a three-state, i.e., "empty", "new" and "blocked" Markov chain model to describe the behavior of the buffer within a switching element. In addition to traditional statistical analysis including throughput and delay, we also examine the delay variation. …

Electrostatic Interactions At Membrane-Water Interfaces And Distribution Of 2, 4, 6-Trichlorophenol In A Membrane Model System, Isolde Sieder
Dissertations and Theses
It is generally accepted that biological membranes consist of a lipid bilayer matrix with proteins incorporated into the lipid bilayer. Typically, these membranes are negatively charged due to the presence of negatively charged lipids in the bilayer as well as negatively charged molecular groups on proteins. Biologically active molecules, such as environmental pollutants, enter the membrane from the aqueous phase by adsorption or partitioning into the lipid bilayer. The thesis consists of two parts. Part I is a computational study of spatial distribution of electric potential in the aqueous portion of the membrane-water interface using two models of charge distribution: …

Mobility Modeling And Simulation Of Soi Si1-X Gex P-Mosfet, Sida Zhou
Mobility Modeling And Simulation Of Soi Si1-X Gex P-Mosfet, Sida Zhou
Dissertations and Theses
With increasing demand for complex and faster circuits, CMOS technologies are progressing towards the deep-submicron level. Process complexity increases dramatically, and costly techniques are to be developed to create dense field isolation and shallow junctions. Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) may solve some of these problems. On the other hand, strained Si1-x Gex layers have been successfully grown on Si substrates and demonstrated much higher hole mobility than bulk Si. This can be used to build high-mobility p-MOSFET with a buried Si1-x Gex channel. A high mobility p-MOSFET would improve both the circuit speed and the level of integration. …
The Affects Of Vocal Fatigue On Fundamental Frequency And Frequency Range In Actresses As Opposed To Non-Actresses, Ruth Ann Jenkins
The Affects Of Vocal Fatigue On Fundamental Frequency And Frequency Range In Actresses As Opposed To Non-Actresses, Ruth Ann Jenkins
Dissertations and Theses
Differences may exist between the voice qualities of those who professionally use and train their voices and those who do not. The examination of fundamental frequency and frequency range m actresses and non-actresses is integral to determining voice quality differences in these populations. These differences, whether the result of frequent use or training of the voice, may exist relative to fatiguing conditions such as may be experienced by actresses in the course of their work. Fatigue has been shown to produce greater effects in normals than in performers, particularly in singers (Gelfer, Andrews, and Schmidt, 1991). Little research has been …
Intentions To Cooperate With Court Appointed Special Advocates (Casas) In Child Protective Proceedings: The Role Of Perceived Social Pressure In The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Yuko Sato Spofford
Intentions To Cooperate With Court Appointed Special Advocates (Casas) In Child Protective Proceedings: The Role Of Perceived Social Pressure In The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Yuko Sato Spofford
Dissertations and Theses
Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior with the addition of Perceived Moral Obligation was used to investigate the behavioral intentions of 65 caseworkers of the Children's Services Division (CSD) to cooperate with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) on cases involving abused or neglected children. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the subjective norms and perceived moral obligation constructs were significant predictors of the three behavioral intention categories and of all three categories combined. The two constructs, however, seem to have a considerable amount of overlap, suggesting that they may be measuring what is broadly called "social pressure to perform/not to perform" the …

Scaling Of The Silicon-On-Insulator Si And Si1-Xgex P-Mosfets, Marijan PeršUn
Dissertations and Theses
Two-dimensional numerical simulation was used to study the scaling properties of SOI p-MOSFETs. Based on the design criteria for the threshold voltage and DIBL, a set of design curves for different designs was developed. Data for subthreshold slope, SCE and threshold voltage sensitivity to silicon film thickness are also given. Results show that short-channel effects can be controlled by increasing the doping level or by thinning the silicon film thickness. The first approach is more effective for p+ gate design with high body doping, while the second approach is much more effective for n+ gate design with low body doping. …
Data Allocation For Distributed Programs, Liono Setiowijoso
Data Allocation For Distributed Programs, Liono Setiowijoso
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis shows that both data and code must be efficiently distributed to achieve good performance in a distributed system. Most previous research has either tried to distribute code structures to improve parallelism or to distribute data to reduce communication costs. Code distribution (exploiting functional parallelism) is an effort to distribute or to duplicate function codes to optimize parallel performance. On the other hand, data distribution tries to place data structures as close as possible to the function codes that use it, so that communication cost can be reduced.
In particular, dataflow researchers have primarily focused on code partitioning and …

Pathological gambling is a treatable, but complex addiction. Defined as out of control gambling that disrupts relationships, employment and/or education. People from all social, economic and cultural groups are affected. Pathological gambling is a problem throughout this country, and in Oregon 61,000 people are estimated to have this disorder. There is a lack of information and extensive misinformation about gambling; and gambling has, historically, been considered a moral weakness. Treatment for pathological gambling is a recent development, and still is not widely available. Pathological gambling is pervasive, poorly understood, and costly and deserves further study. Existing literature on pathological gambling, …
Economic Development And Income Inequality: The Taiwan Case, Ju-Kuang Chang
Economic Development And Income Inequality: The Taiwan Case, Ju-Kuang Chang
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines income inequality in Taiwan from three perspectives: economic development, political democracy, and world-system/dependence. Education, population growth, population structure, unemployment, savings, and export growth are treated as variables. Below are the important conclusions.
Economic development has an effect on income inequality. The level of development is crucial. In the 1950s and 1960s, the relationship was significant, but in the next two decades economic development did not further decrease income inequality. Sector dualism was not a good predictor.
Democratization did not have an obvious relation with income inequality. But the stable political environment and the endeavors of government to …

The Role Of Pulmocutaneous Baroreceptors In The Control Of Lymphatic Heart Rate In The Toad Bufo Marinus, Dane Alan Crossley Ii
Dissertations and Theses
The present study documents that baroreceptors located in the pulmocutaneous artery (PCA) are key components in control of lymph heart rate in amphibians. A negative feedback control loop exists between arterial pressure and lymphatic heart rate. The recurrent laryngeal nerve (rLN), which innervates the PCA baroreceptors, transmits information on arterial pressure to integration centers in the central nervous system. Lymphatic heart rate (LHR) is reduced as a result of increases in arterial pressure. This loop was determined using three experimental protocols. First, the correlation between LHR reduction and hormonally induced vasoconstriction was determined. Increases in arterial pressure due to pressor …

Der 35. Mai -- Ein Sozialkritisches Erwachsenenbuch FüR Kinder, Thomas Bosch
Dissertations and Theses
Der 35. Mai, Erich Kästner's least popular young people's book, has received only little attention by critical reviewers, and is seldom included in comparative studies that deal with the body of his early young people's literature. Due to the existence of only a few critical secondary sources and convincing studies showing the works unpopularity, this thesis wants to add new critical insights and give reasons for the failure of this particular book. Secondly, this examination will question the rather uncritically and quickly affixed label young people's literature that haunts Der 35. Mai until today.
This study reviews Kästner's …

Dissertations and Theses
This study documents the educational and cultural experiences of Soviet Evangelical high school students, the most recent refugee population to the Portland-Vancouver school districts.
Soviet Evangelical high school students have experienced a slow and difficult transition to the American classroom. The students were often negatively characterized by their ESL teachers and other school personnel as "difficult" due to their classroom behaviors. Many times, these behaviors did not meet the ESL teacher's expectations, resulting in a culture clash between the teacher and the Soviet Evangelical students.
The study found that Soviet Evangelical high school students came to the United States with …
