Wildlife Connectivity Modeling For The Northern Red-Legged Frog In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Oregon, Amanda Hilary Temple
Wildlife Connectivity Modeling For The Northern Red-Legged Frog In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Oregon, Amanda Hilary Temple
Dissertations and Theses
Effective habitat connectivity tools that use GIS data perform well in remote areas but may not be as dependable in urban environments. The goal was to study uses and limitations of a conservation management tool in development, the Metro Regional Habitat Connectivity Toolkit, which evaluates connectivity for and permeability of wildlife movement. Habitat quality scores are generated from GIS-derived and field collected data such as connectivity patch/matrix characteristics, water source, vegetation, other structural components, wildlife observations, and human disturbance at survey sites. I compared GIS and field generated habitat quality scores for the Northern Red-legged Frog (Rana aurora) …
A Colorless Nature: Exploring The Mental Health (Help-Seeking) Experiences Of Pre-Adolescent Black American Children, Christopher Ashley Burkett
A Colorless Nature: Exploring The Mental Health (Help-Seeking) Experiences Of Pre-Adolescent Black American Children, Christopher Ashley Burkett
Dissertations and Theses
Black American children and adults seeking help for mental health concerns face countless obstacles rooted in systematic oppression, institutional inequalities, and structural disparities; consequently, accessing essential services at much lower rates than their White American counterparts. The unidentified and untreated mental health issues of Black American children and youth can have catastrophic life outcomes for them. Some researchers cite barriers such as stigmatization, negative attitudes toward mental health services, and a lack of culturally relevant treatment models as explanations for these impediments to mental health (help-seeking). It is my contention that these analyses are arguably incomplete, despite having accurate elements. …
In Search Of A Third Place On Campus: An Exploration Of The Effects Of Built Space On Students' Sense Of Belonging, Kimberly S. Stave
In Search Of A Third Place On Campus: An Exploration Of The Effects Of Built Space On Students' Sense Of Belonging, Kimberly S. Stave
Dissertations and Theses
Despite decades of environmental behavior research demonstrating the impact physical space has on human behavior, the American university has been slow to adopt this data into campus design and renovation plans. Campus ecology literature has demonstrated that the physical environment of the university campus communicates messages that influence students' feelings of well-being, mattering, and inclusion within the campus community, all significant contributors to student learning and retention.
Campus spaces designed for community building are essential to cultivate a sense of belonging for university students, however, locations dedicated to this type of social interaction, such as third places, are an often-underestimated …
Investigating The Mental Health And Well-Being Effects Of Neo-Pagan Spiritual Practice, Emma Ritter
Investigating The Mental Health And Well-Being Effects Of Neo-Pagan Spiritual Practice, Emma Ritter
University Honors Theses
Paganism, or Neo-paganism, is an umbrella term for a variety of different religions and spirituals, generally marked by a non-authoritarian structure and the reclamation of ancient spiritual practices. Over the course of my work, I looked at articles pertaining to spiritual connection to nature, spiritual ritual, and rejection on the basis of religion in order to fully understand Neo-pagan experience.
Working Around Political Divides: A Multidisciplinary Examination Of Political Identity As A Factor Of Organizational Diversity, Blake D. Horner
Working Around Political Divides: A Multidisciplinary Examination Of Political Identity As A Factor Of Organizational Diversity, Blake D. Horner
University Honors Theses
In an age of targeted rhetoric and extreme polarization, the political has trespassed into the personal. As a result of this obtrusive integration, disagreements in the workplace are on the rise. Friction caused by inter-employee political diversity has been shown to cause several harmful organizational outcomes including job dissatisfaction, turnover, burnout, and psychological distress. Although this issue is common and harmful, few studies have been published on the subject. In this literature review, I attempt to contribute to the scholarly knowledge on this under-researched concept of workplace political diversity by employing a multidisciplinary approach. To illustrate the components of this …
Vampires, Fandom, And Feminism: Updating The Vampire Horror Screenplay Through Themes Of Empowerment, Mckinzie Smith
Vampires, Fandom, And Feminism: Updating The Vampire Horror Screenplay Through Themes Of Empowerment, Mckinzie Smith
University Honors Theses
In this thesis supplement, the three major themes of McKinzie Smith’s screenplay Lifeblood are elaborated on in detail. In an effort to craft a screenplay within the horror genre that is modern and meaningful, the vampire myth was adapted to apply to the contemporary conversation surrounding power dynamics and gendered violence. The theme of fandom is shown to expose those power dynamics in a familiar, relatable way for a teenaged female audience. These two themes filter into the broader feminist intention of the work, aiming to provoke conversation about power in fandom spaces as well as provide catharsis for young …
Centering Children In Co-Parenting, Kristen L. Wiidanen
Centering Children In Co-Parenting, Kristen L. Wiidanen
University Honors Theses
Comprehensive systems theory identifies several associated risk factors and consequences of separation but, research suggests that legal divorce itself has few direct effects on children. While there is diversity in children’s responses to separation, generally associated risk factors are behavioral disruptions, emotional upheaval, anger, resentment, anxiety, guilt and depression. Parents abilities to cope with their divorce are critical to the child’s adjustment and, if parents are able to control their feelings toward their ex-spouse, cooperate in parenting, negotiate differences, and settle their quarrels in privacy, their children will show fewer social and emotional problems. It is expected that the curriculum …
A Soundless Feminine Representation: An Ecofeminist Reading Of "The Eolian Harp", Eve Echternach
A Soundless Feminine Representation: An Ecofeminist Reading Of "The Eolian Harp", Eve Echternach
University Honors Theses
Focusing on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Eolian Harp," this essay centers on the erasure and replacement of women's voices through descriptions of the environment and the common themes between the two. In many works of poetry and writing, women are compared to the natural world and vice versa. Though Coleridge's "The Eolian Harp" is categorized as a conversation poem, the dialogue of his wife, Sara Fricker, and any other feminized figures are omitted. Within this poem, one can see the environment and women's cohabitation being used to flatten their character, remove agency, and to place the male figures in the …
Proposal For Comparative Morphometrics Of Tübingen (Tu) And Tübingen Longfin (Tl) Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Andrew Draper
Proposal For Comparative Morphometrics Of Tübingen (Tu) And Tübingen Longfin (Tl) Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Andrew Draper
University Honors Theses
The TL strain of zebrafish (Danio rerio) originated from the TU strain, and differs in fin pattern with a phenotype predominated by increased fin length. Two genes are known to affect the phenotype: leo and lof. The pattern-affecting leo gene is not believed to affect the growth rate, development, or proportionality of the body. The lof gene does however result in significant increase in fin length compared to the wild-type phenotype of TU. Using populations from both TL and TU genetic strains, development was observed from 48 hours post fertilization through sexual maturity at 90 days post fertilization …
A Cultural History Of Black Musicians In Renaissance Europe, 1500-1700, Jamar Taylor
A Cultural History Of Black Musicians In Renaissance Europe, 1500-1700, Jamar Taylor
University Honors Theses
This research project concerning Black Africans in Renaissance Europe is predicated on including Africans into a global history they have largely been excluded from, even though there is ample evidence that proves their cultural influence, in this case, with music. Culture is inextricably linked to the politics of the time. European societies were highly hierarchical, so nothing was approved without the blessing of the elites. In almost every strata of the social hierarchy, music is an important component, from military exhibitions to court and formal events to informal social gatherings. In some European societies, musicians were employed as government officials. …
The Detrimental Side Effects Of Retinol : Beyond Beauty Products, Michelle W. Lee
The Detrimental Side Effects Of Retinol : Beyond Beauty Products, Michelle W. Lee
University Honors Theses
In recent years, the beauty industry has profited off our culture’s growing vanity and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. With no certified way to freeze age, many consumers turn to skincare and makeup products that implement retinol as a means to combat wrinkles, even out skin tone, and treat acne. In this meta-analysis, I explore the detrimental side effects of retinol. As consumers of beauty products get younger and younger, they are more susceptible to potential side effects due to their early ages starting the compounds and their prolonged use. Here I examine three potentially dangerous conditions caused …
Pseudo-Protections For Women: An Analysis Of Possible Ulterior Motives For Ratifying International Women’S Rights Treaties, Tori Gale
University Honors Theses
Many international women’s rights treaties have been adopted and ratified in the years since the closing of World War II. The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the United Nations in 1979, and has been ratified by all but six states parties. Women all over the world continue to endure mistreatment and inequality, despite multiple international efforts, such as CEDAW, to improve conditions on their behalf. This thesis aims to analyze possible ulterior incentives for the ratification of women’s rights treaties, motivated by the alarming disconnect between rhetoric and action put …

Frequency Of Limited English Proficient (Lep) Patient Visits And Language Resources: An Assessment Of Rural Oregon's Health Centers And Working With Lep Communities, Gabriel I. Lehrburger
University Honors Theses
Persons with limited English proficiency (LEP) can face barriers when seeking health care. Rural communities often have reduced access to some health resources. However, little is known about how rural communities meet the language needs of their LEP populations. A cross-sectional survey and interview were designed and sent to managerial staff in rural health centers around the state of Oregon. During the months of January – March 2020, survey and interview data were collected to assess the relationship between frequency of LEP patient visits and available language resources in rural Oregon. The study also investigated staff perceptions when working with …
The Impact Of Vote By Mail On Native American Turnout, Nathaniel J. Torry-Schrag
The Impact Of Vote By Mail On Native American Turnout, Nathaniel J. Torry-Schrag
University Honors Theses
When Vote by Mail was fully implemented by the state of Oregon in 2000, it quickly became the subject of study by the Political Science community. While there is not yet an academic consensus about the impact of vote by mail, its growing popularity is undeniable. Mail voting has now been fully adopted in four states, with several others extensively offering mail ballots as an alternative to in-person voting. As this form of convenience voting spreads across the county, it is important to once again try to determine its impacts. This study examines a voting group often overlooked by academic …
Genetic Diversity Correlates With Morphological Diversity Among Populations Of Achyrachaena Mollis, Rachel S. Bice
Genetic Diversity Correlates With Morphological Diversity Among Populations Of Achyrachaena Mollis, Rachel S. Bice
University Honors Theses
Biodiversity is important for ecosystem health and sustainability, especially in the current, rapidly changing climate. Understanding the underlying causes behind morphological variation will allow for more accurate predictions about how a population will respond to climate change, and potentially yield better natural resource management strategies. Achyrachaena mollis is an annual, self-fertilizing, range-limited, endemic species found in Northern California and Southern Oregon. This species depends primarily on wind seed dispersal for gene flow, making it a good study species in seed dispersal experiments. Additionally, A. mollis is more readily influenced by changes in its environment than a perennial due to its …
The Lasting Effects Of U.S. Intervention In Guatemala, Katherine A. Gaffey
The Lasting Effects Of U.S. Intervention In Guatemala, Katherine A. Gaffey
University Honors Theses
Guatemala today faces a national femicide, exceedingly high rates of human trafficking and drug trafficking, as well an increase in migration to the U.S. This paper attempts to understand the current situation in Guatemala through a historical analysis of Guatemala’s tumultuous relationship with the U.S. Specifically, it looks at the role of the 1954 CIA backed coup and the United Fruit Company as key causal factors in fostering the Guatemalan Civil War and the implications of that war for ongoing crime and instability in Guatemala today.
Post-Fire Changes In Interior Alaska's Vegetation Composition, Jannike E. Allen
Post-Fire Changes In Interior Alaska's Vegetation Composition, Jannike E. Allen
University Honors Theses
Global warming is altering the fire regime of interior Alaska, which may have cascading effects on the prevalence of forest types and species dominance across this region. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between vegetation composition and fire in the boreal forest of interior Alaska. We utilized data from over 700 plots sampled across the landscape designated as the Tanana region by the US Forest Service for Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA), as well as fire history records. We compared biomass and stem density of conifer and hardwood forest types, as well as individual tree species, across a gradient of …
Increasing Organizational Commitment: Empowering Employees In The Workplace, Kathryn Davidson
Increasing Organizational Commitment: Empowering Employees In The Workplace, Kathryn Davidson
University Honors Theses
Attaining organizational commitment from employees plays a vital role in the success of a business. This is because commitment ensures loyalty and stability within an environment. Employee empowerment is also another critical element of business as it ensures motivation and engagement from the organization’s workforce. By using Natalie Allen and John Meyer’s three types of commitment as a major lens, this paper analyzes appropriate literature related to empowerment leadership. The correlation between organizational commitment and employee empowerment is discussed and it indicates that empowerment can positively impact an employee’s commitment to their work organization. Employees can experience burnout if their …
Straying From The Norm: Which Single Mothers Choose Non-Traditional Last Names For Their Children?, Cyrena Selden
Straying From The Norm: Which Single Mothers Choose Non-Traditional Last Names For Their Children?, Cyrena Selden
University Honors Theses
By analyzing characteristics of single mothers in the baseline wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), I aim to discover which characteristics of single mothers predict their choice to give their newborn children non-traditional last names, or names other than the father's last name. My exploratory study focuses on finding significant relationships to illuminate predictors of mother’s surname choices. Initially mother's age, education, religiosity, political liberalness, race/ethnicity, and relationship to the father were analyzed. After analysis, the mother’s relationship with the father was found to be the most significant. Compared to mothers who are cohabiting with the …

Co-Predatory Rule: International Cooperation With Respect To Cryptocurrency Taxation In Russia And Belarus, Jim Mignano
Co-Predatory Rule: International Cooperation With Respect To Cryptocurrency Taxation In Russia And Belarus, Jim Mignano
Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
This article presents an example of how globalization and digitization force states to rely on international organization. Examining tax policy with respect to cryptocurrency—an innovative, global technology—the implication is that a state levying taxes on cryptocurrency must turn to international monitoring and enforcement regimes to support effective taxation. Based on Margaret Levi’s theory of predatory rule, I submit a theory of “co-predation” to explain international cooperation with respect to taxation of novel, cross-border technologies such as cryptocurrency. The Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI), an anti-tax evasion framework promulgated by the OECD, serves as an example of international cooperation. A comparison …
Survivor Perceptions Of Well-Being After Working With Domestic Violence Advocates In Healthcare, Passion Donais
Survivor Perceptions Of Well-Being After Working With Domestic Violence Advocates In Healthcare, Passion Donais
University Honors Theses
Domestic violence services are typically short term and crisis-oriented, leaving survivors unsupported when outcomes of abuse are long term or chronic; In combination with the nature of disclosure laws, this short term approach to services reduces survivor autonomy and options. Research on alternatives to partitioned services such as integrated approaches or co-located advocates present in shelters and healthcare settings is limited. This study explores the survivor-perceived effects of working with such an advocate on physical, mental, and emotional health. Findings suggest integrated approaches are valuable across all health domains to survivors, including, importantly, those living with difficult to treat conditions …
Investigating Sexual Fantasy And Sexual Behavior In Adolescent Offenders, Hayley Lauren Tews
Investigating Sexual Fantasy And Sexual Behavior In Adolescent Offenders, Hayley Lauren Tews
Dissertations and Theses
Juvenile sexual offenders (SOs) have been found to account for a significant proportion of sexual offenses. A critical gap has been identified in our knowledge regarding the role of sexual fantasy and sexual behavior in juvenile sexual offending, even though these variables have been identified as an important treatment target for this population. Specifically, it is not clear if SOs differ significantly from juvenile non-sexual offenders (NSOs) in their sexual fantasies and sexual behavior and as such, if reports of fantasies and past sexual behaviors should be used as a target for sex offender specific treatment. This study explored differences …
Sense Of Belonging From A Distance: How Online Students Describe, Perceive, And Experience Belonging To The Institution, Marleigh Luster Perez
Sense Of Belonging From A Distance: How Online Students Describe, Perceive, And Experience Belonging To The Institution, Marleigh Luster Perez
Dissertations and Theses
The availability and ease of access to online bachelor's degree programs has led to a dynamic shift in the world of higher education. While overall, there has been a decrease in student enrollments, distance student enrollment has been growing. According to a report by the Babson Survey Research Group, between the fall of 2012 and the fall of 2016 students pursuing higher education at all levels across degree-granting institutions fell by 3.8%. During the same four-year period, the percentage of those students choosing to take all or some of their courses at a distance increased from 25.9% to 29.7%. Among …
Laurent Series Expansion And Its Applications, Anna Sobczyk
Laurent Series Expansion And Its Applications, Anna Sobczyk
University Honors Theses
The Laurent expansion is a well-known topic in complex analysis for its application in obtaining residues of complex functions around their singularities. Computing the Laurent series of a function around its singularities turns out to be an efficient way to determine the residue of the function as well as to compute the integral of the function along any closed curves around its singularities. Based on the theory of the Laurent series, this paper provides several working examples where the Laurent series of a function is determined and then used to calculate the integral of the function along any closed curve …
Perceptions Of Students Of Color About Their Experience In An Alternative High School: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Massene Mboup
Perceptions Of Students Of Color About Their Experience In An Alternative High School: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Massene Mboup
Dissertations and Theses
Public schools in Oregon have been struggling to include students of color and teachers of color for so long. Students of color represent more than one third of the school population, yet remain underserved, underrepresented, and over disciplined. Most of their teachers and support staff are White; the teachers of color represent less than 8% of the teaching staff. The students of color attend comprehensive high schools that generally ignore them--or push them out. Some students of color end up in alternative schools.
My problem of practice was the oppression of students of color in urban schools. Specifically, my research …
Residence Life As Learning Organizations: An Inquiry Into Organizational Elements That Support Integration Of The Residential Curriculum, Heather Kropf
Dissertations and Theses
Student learning and success is tied to the learning goals and mission of each institution, including environments outside of the classroom. Students are more diverse than ever in terms of their lived experience and their culture, identity, and how they engage in learning. Research has indicated that students spend the majority of their time outside the classroom, where they are learning through informal and formal environments. This has significance and opportunities for student affairs practitioners who desire to create student learning environments. In fact, residence life curricular approaches have demonstrated positive learning experiences for students.
However, implementing a learning-based curricular …
Hearing The Voices Of Bicultural And Bilingual Teachers: Using A Case Study Approach To Explain The Professional Identity Development Of Early Career Native Chinese Mandarin Teachers, Jing Chen
Dissertations and Theses
Increasingly, Native Chinese Mandarin teachers have been migrating to the United States and taking positions as Mandarin teachers in U.S. schools. Many have needed support for professional identity development as bicultural and bilingual teachers given their new social cultural context. The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the experiences and professional identity development of early-career Native Chinese Mandarin teachers in one Northwest Pacific city. Using a theoretical framework of social cultural theory in education and the bicultural identity integration construct, I conducted a multiple case study of four early-career Native Chinese Mandarin teachers in four different school …
Organizational Risk In Multi-Sector Health Partnerships: A Case Study Of Oregon's Accountable Health Communities, Shauna Jean Nicole Petchel
Organizational Risk In Multi-Sector Health Partnerships: A Case Study Of Oregon's Accountable Health Communities, Shauna Jean Nicole Petchel
Dissertations and Theses
The literature on collective action has documented that the perception of organizational risk -- both the uncertainty of potential outcomes and the meaning attached to them -- is an important factor in whether and how organizations engage in cross-sector collaborations. Yet there are few examples to date that document how health and social service leaders perceive organizational risks in cross-sector health partnerships focused on social determinants of health, or how their perceptions influence organizational commitment and willingness to engage in these partnerships over time.
This research aimed to fill this gap through a mixed methods case study of health and …
Leveraging Model Flexibility And Deep Structure: Non-Parametric And Deep Models For Computer Vision Processes With Applications To Deep Model Compression, Anthony D. Rhodes
Leveraging Model Flexibility And Deep Structure: Non-Parametric And Deep Models For Computer Vision Processes With Applications To Deep Model Compression, Anthony D. Rhodes
Dissertations and Theses
My dissertation presents several new algorithms incorporating non-parametric and deep learning approaches for computer vision and related tasks, including object localization, object tracking and model compression. With respect to object localization, I introduce a method to perform active localization by modeling spatial and other relationships between objects in a coherent "visual situation" using a set of probability distributions. I further refine this approach with the Multipole Density Estimation with Importance Clustering (MIC-Situate) algorithm. Next, I formulate active, "situation" object search as a Bayesian optimization problem using Gaussian Processes. Using my Gaussian Process Context Situation Learning (GP-CL) algorithm, I demonstrate improved …
