The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experience (Aces), Future Adult Incarceration, And Poor Mental Health- A Literature Review, Letasi M. Burgess
University Honors Theses
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) study is about childhood experiences with abuse, neglect, household challenges, and adult life mental and physical well-being. ACE's that were identified and studied were substance abuse; domestic violence; emotional and physical neglect; physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; mental illness; divorce/separation; and members of the home who have been incarcerated. This paper will be about how adults who have been or are incarcerated, as well as have or have had mental health issues, were impacted by adverse childhood experiences.
Constructing A Contemporary Mythology: Zardulu's Viral Art In The Post-Truth Age, Grace Wolfe
Constructing A Contemporary Mythology: Zardulu's Viral Art In The Post-Truth Age, Grace Wolfe
University Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the artistic processes of Zardulu the Mythmaker, an anonymous internet figure whose viral art expands upon the language of online hoaxes and media sensationalism to create mythologies that encapsulate the present. Recent scholarship has proposed a shift away from "the contemporary" in art, as its constant efforts toward innovation and detachment from discipline perpetuates the current culture of anxiety. Zardulu's art practice offers a unique separation from the boundaries of contemporary art, which is examined in this thesis through her use of ancient myth-making techniques and the medium of internet virality. Furthermore, this thesis presents Zardulu's methodology …

Literature Review: Pollutant Removal Efficacy Of Floating Treatment Wetlands Across Water Bodies, Sophie Johnson
Literature Review: Pollutant Removal Efficacy Of Floating Treatment Wetlands Across Water Bodies, Sophie Johnson
University Honors Theses
Wetland numbers are declining worldwide and there is a need to replace the water filtration services they provide. One emerging option is floating treatment wetlands (FTW). FTW are a floating mat that serves as a habitat for aquatic plants whose roots are suspended in the water and that remove both organic and inorganic pollutants like nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), potentially toxic metals, and suspended solids. A literature search was performed to examine the efficacy of FTW pollutant removal. Specifically, I inspected 1) how effective FTW are at removing a range of nutrients; 2) what types of plants are most effective …
Our Peer The Pigeon: Impacts Of The Covid-19 "Anthropause" On Psu Campus Urban Foragers, Audrey Douglass
Our Peer The Pigeon: Impacts Of The Covid-19 "Anthropause" On Psu Campus Urban Foragers, Audrey Douglass
University Honors Theses
The 2020 COVID Pandemic presented a paradigm shift dubbed, by some scholars, the 'Anthropause', an ecological epoch in which humans faded from the public sphere. As was the case for many urban species that depend on the foraging of food waste, this meant a fundamental disruption to their food systems and to the entire urban eco-web. The PSU Campus Park Blocks presents a unique opportunity to observe animal behavior, while also a succinct microcosm to study food waste flow changes, and compare species layout to other urban parks in the METRO area. Decreased food waste output from proximal …
Disaster And The Built Environment: How The Prephub Has The Potential To Impact Preparedness And Create Resilience During Natural Disasters., Sequoia Bellanca
Disaster And The Built Environment: How The Prephub Has The Potential To Impact Preparedness And Create Resilience During Natural Disasters., Sequoia Bellanca
University Honors Theses
Around the world, natural disasters pose a common threat to most communities. In 2015, Thecho, Nepal, suffered a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, killing 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000 (Reid, 2018). In the Pacific Northwest, the coast awaits a catastrophic earthquake, known as "The Really Big One" (Schulz, 2020), scientifically predicted to cause mass destruction. Although communities continue to experience and anticipate these disasters, the preparedness rate amongst individuals is shockingly low. Using this information, researchers developed a structure, rooted in interdisciplinary design, that will aid in the passive education of disaster preparedness amongst individuals and communities. Through unobtrusive qualitative research, …
An Integrative Review Of Fathers' Needs During The Transition To Fatherhood: Implications For Perinatal Education, Carli Cox
University Honors Theses
Aim: To examine the needs and experiences of fathers during the transition to fatherhood with the intent of improving perinatal education for fathers.
Background: The perinatal period is a highly transformational time for parents with implications in mental health, role development, identity formation, and relationship changes, to name a few. Unfortunately, research on fathers' needs and experiences during this time is limited, which consequentially restricts the development of father-inclusive perinatal education.
Method: An electronic search for qualitative studies was conducted using the PsycInfo database. Results were narrowed by a set of criteria and chosen studies' results were analyzed and organized …

Noise As Music: Effects Of Physical And Digital Noise In One's Life, Juliana Bigelow
University Honors Theses
Sound is something to be thought about critically. It is not just a part of our world, but it helps define it. This thesis follows the development of five short sonic compositions created from field recordings of the researcher's environments between June 2020 and March 2021. Through techniques such as granular synthesis, soundwalking, and text scores, the compositions demonstrate how noise in both physical and digital sonic environments can impact one's identities, relationships, health, transitions, and ideas of music. Critically thinking about sound can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves and others and allows us to begin creating …

Exploring The Criminal Justice System Through A Case Study Approach: Exploring The Intersections And Interventions Of The Juvenile Justice System Through A Case Study Approach, Adriana Cordova-Perez
University Honors Theses
For my thesis, I used a case study approach to analyze what we can learn about the Criminal justice system by exploring the life history of a juvenile offender. Research data was collected through an interview with a juvenile offender. Secondary sources such as literature review will also be examined to better understand the juvenile justice system. The interview will have several questions to better understand the life of the juvenile prior to them becoming part of the criminal justice system and also the question about life while in the youth correctional facility. Through those questions, I hope to better …
Building A Leader's Identity On Social Media, Morningstar Dickson
Building A Leader's Identity On Social Media, Morningstar Dickson
University Honors Theses
How can leaders use social media effectively to shape their identity as a leader? Based on previous scholarship, this paper argues that using an authentic leadership approach to social media usage, would balance a leader’s true identity as well as maintaining their relationship with their followers. Which would allow the leaders’ influence to be more effective. This paper consists of a literature review on authentic leadership, and trust, and then builds a conceptual model that will break down how a leader should build and present their identity on online formats. The model shows how identity on social media is a …
Higher Education For All Law Enforcement Officers, Johana Constantino Madrigal
Higher Education For All Law Enforcement Officers, Johana Constantino Madrigal
University Honors Theses
In this brief prospectus, the focus is on the many arguments for why it should be a requirement for all law enforcement officers to have a higher education background. Given light to recent events, the importance for more highly trained and educated officers has become more dire as people call for justice in an attempt to right the wrongs that have been done. The articles found all address the manner in which higher education can help with better judgement calls, analyze and respond to situations better, and the overall perception officers have, who have a form of higher education, on …
Colorful, Weird, And Wonderful: The Influences Of Subculture On The Fashion Of The 1960s, Gianna M. Zanzi
Colorful, Weird, And Wonderful: The Influences Of Subculture On The Fashion Of The 1960s, Gianna M. Zanzi
University Honors Theses
In this paper, I attempt to examine the fashion of three dominant subcultures within the American Counterculture movement of the 1960s--the Youthquakers, Mods, and Hippies--before discussing my project that was synthesized from this research; three outfits, one representing each subculture, that I had sewn using vintage and vintage-inspired patterns, fabrics, and notions. While I myself was not alive during the 1960s, my interest in the aesthetics associated with the decade were my motivation for trying my hand at creating period-accurate clothing using techniques and materials that would have also been used at this time. This essay is the documentation of …
Should Synergy Alone Be Accepted As Justification For Premia Paid In M&A?, Sebastian Araguas
Should Synergy Alone Be Accepted As Justification For Premia Paid In M&A?, Sebastian Araguas
University Honors Theses
Synergy is often used by management as justification to pay, and oftentimes overpay, for acquisitions. This paper explores the phenomenon of synergy being used as justification for overpayment in various M&A transactions, and the impact it has on value for shareholders. Current methods of valuation are compiled, summarized, and examined for potential areas of conflict, challenges with post merger integration are explored, and real world examples of improper integration and overpayment are examined. We find that the current methods of valuation leave room for error based on hubris and personal interest, that the realization of synergy is often much more …

With recent advancements in technology, emoji are continuously changing the way that people communicate and process language. Their use continues to evolve as a mechanism to counter the loss of the rich nonverbal cues of face-to-face communication. Subsequently, the need for research examining how emoji are processed and how they affect language and communication has become more important. This research specifically examines the scholarship on emoji effects on sentence reading times (RT) and how this relates to mood. Results on the effects of emoji on sentence RT are mixed. In some instances, emoji slowed RT and in others, they sped …
The Community Case For Violence: Toward A Materialist Perspective On Community Work, Aven Handley-Merk
The Community Case For Violence: Toward A Materialist Perspective On Community Work, Aven Handley-Merk
University Honors Theses
This paper examines and synthesizes existing critiques of contemporary community work in the United States. These critiques are substantiated and developed by a discussion of nonprofit history and formal structure, establishing the premise that contemporary community work is constrained both by its powerlessness and its collaboration with government. It is constrained to an extent that it cannot meaningfully address or remedy community problems. Theorists often see the root of this problem in the birth of neoliberalism in the 1970s, but this paper argues that it arises instead from liberal philosophy, and is rooted much more deeply in Western history and …

North American Expatriates In Mexico: A Discourse Analysis Of Facebook Groups, Liliana Carolina Brock
North American Expatriates In Mexico: A Discourse Analysis Of Facebook Groups, Liliana Carolina Brock
University Honors Theses
North American expatriates in Mexico often live in enclaves or affluent communities at a fraction of what it would cost in the US or Canada. Despite living in Mexico for years, many expatriates are poorly integrated into Mexican culture and society. This integration is made more difficult because many are unable to speak Spanish fluently. Instead, expatriates rely on English language Facebook groups to help them navigate life in Mexico. While scholars have explored the intersections of communication and interculturalism in expatriate communities, comparatively few have explored how the internet and the presentation of self on social media (specifically Facebook) …
Roman Law And Magic, Abigail Preston
Roman Law And Magic, Abigail Preston
University Honors Theses
Ancient Roman court cases, like that of Apuleius and Libanius, indicate that "magic" was an offense punishable by law, and literary sources such as Pliny the Elder and Horace substantiate this with references to illicit magical rites. Curse tablets, particularly those of Roman Britain, show another side of magic in the Roman world wherein the use of curse tablets has restrictions and guidelines, and the use of such curses have been institutionalized into some communities as an observant practice. Many Roman religious rites appear similar to modern, Euro-centric depictions of 'magic;' which provokes the central question when prosecuting cases of …
Reclaiming The "I": Memoir Writing As Feminist Activism, Michela Sottura
Reclaiming The "I": Memoir Writing As Feminist Activism, Michela Sottura
University Honors Theses
When I set out to write about my body and what happened to me, I knew I was going to have to sit with parts of myself I had long silenced, overlooked, maybe even abandoned. When I first took a class on women's memoir writing I was struck by the power of the stories we read. I felt like a door had been opened for me, as I witnessed the importance of sharing one's personal lived history. Reading the words of women with different identities and experiences than mine taught me how memoir can inspire, challenge, educate, rewrite, heal, and …
The Meghan Markle Effect: An Analysis Of A 21st Century Celebrity Through A Veblenian Perspective, Lucy Jensen
The Meghan Markle Effect: An Analysis Of A 21st Century Celebrity Through A Veblenian Perspective, Lucy Jensen
University Honors Theses
Following her engagement and subsequent marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has emerged as a global figure and fashion icon. Her ability to influence fashion trends has been labelled the "Meghan effect" by the news media. This thesis research applies the theories of Thorstein Veblen, an economist and author of the extremely influential Theory of the Leisure Class (1899). The thesis has the aim of clarifying how Veblen’s thinking can be applied to Markle or comparable high-profile women. What this inquiry ultimately finds is that Veblen was indeed correct in his assumption that high-profile, wealthy people such as Markle can …
Preparing To Perform: Brillance, By Ida Gotkovsky, Connor Fast
Preparing To Perform: Brillance, By Ida Gotkovsky, Connor Fast
University Honors Theses
For a musician, preparing music for performance is a task undertaken daily. While the audience will only see the completed product, dozens of hours of dedicated work went into preparing that product. This thesis pulls the curtain back on preparing music and gives an insight on the type of preparation and work a musician might do to get a piece to the stage. Brilliance by Ida Gotkovsky is used as an example for how performance is developed. From the early stages of practicing, through rehearsal, and culminating with a performance, Preparing to Perform encompasses all of the steps in musical …

Roles And Regulation Of Satellite Cells In Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Sydney Vlasman
Roles And Regulation Of Satellite Cells In Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Sydney Vlasman
University Honors Theses
Skeletal muscle has an innate ability to self-regenerate in response to certain stimuli. In the case of trauma, muscle resident stem cells are required to meet the regenerative needs of the tissue. These resident stem cells, called satellite cells (SCs), are crucial in the regenerative process following injury; understanding the major factors which regulate satellite cell activity can provide valuable insight for regenerative medicine. The ability to implement and properly activate satellite cells has immense potential in the treatment of conditions including trauma, degenerative disorders, and age-related sarcopenia. This review will discuss the current understanding of satellite cell-mediated regeneration and …

Science In Service Of Man: Towards An Understanding Of Medicine As An Institution Of Control, Amanda M. Strother
Science In Service Of Man: Towards An Understanding Of Medicine As An Institution Of Control, Amanda M. Strother
University Honors Theses
This paper applies the theoretical work of Frantz Fanon to discuss healthcare as an institution that upholds the will of the dominant authority in the contemporary United States. The use of Fanon's work outside of its original context is justified by applying the internal colonialism theory. Correctional healthcare is discussed as an area of overtly controlling and dehumanizing medical care, highlighting caregiver loyalty to correctional authority and reciprocal distrust between prison physicians and patients. This inquiry proposes that clinical healthcare displays the same power relationships through loyalty to the business of healthcare and the reciprocal distrust between physicians and patients …
A Study Of Stable Isotopes In Snow On Mt. Hood, Oregon, Maya Felix
A Study Of Stable Isotopes In Snow On Mt. Hood, Oregon, Maya Felix
University Honors Theses
Over the 2020-2021 Winter, event-based and end-of-season snow samples were collected on Mt. Hood near Government Camp, OR and analyzed for their stable isotopic compositions of 18O and 2H. It was found that surficial snow collected through the winter had higher variation in isotopic values than samples from a snow pit collected in spring. This suggests homogenization occurred in the snowpack over the season from snow metamorphism, sublimation, and/or melting. Homogenization of the snowpack will likely become more pronounced as temperatures increase and rain falls more often than snow due to climate change. Research that utilizes the snowpack …

Soft Lithographic Replication Of High Length-Scale Micropillars From Laser-Ablated Fused-Silica Templates, Jason Pitts
University Honors Theses
Soft lithography is a well-established route to wafer-scale reproduction of micro- and nanoscale features in a wide variety of materials. Nevertheless, micron length scales have yet to be explored, despite the potential utility of such structures. Here, polymer micropillars of 6-12 μm length, approximately 0.5-1.5 μm wide at 10 μm spacing are reproduced from a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold made from patterned cellulose acetate (CA). The patterned CA was cast from a rigid fused silica template machined by a pulsed femtosecond laser. Pore topographic features were successfully reproduced in Norland Optical Adhesive (NOA), polycaprolactone (PCL), Nafion, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and …
Understanding Ransomware Trajectory To Create An Informed Prediction, J. D. Klusnick
Understanding Ransomware Trajectory To Create An Informed Prediction, J. D. Klusnick
University Honors Theses
Ransomware is a form of extortion in which digital files are rendered inaccessible until a ransom payment is made. Modern ransomware emerged in 2006 and its destructive influence has been expanding ever since. In recent years cybercriminals have evolved who they target, what computer systems they target, and how they infect those systems. Meanwhile, cybersecurity experts have modelled ransomware methods allowing them to innovate their defense techniques across three paradigms: recovery, detection, and prevention. Ultimately either ransomware attackers or ransomware defenders will dominate this ongoing conflict. A review of the literature indicates that the ransomware crime wave will likely be …
