Some Interrelationships Between A Community Work And Training Program And Selected Indices Of Family Functioning, Audrey K. Arnst

Dissertations and Theses

This was an exploratory study of some of the relationships between a Community Work and Training Program and the family functioning of certain participants in that program. The CWT projects studied were those operated by the Public Welfare Departments of Clackamas and Marion Counties, Oregon during the three-year span between January 1, 1965 and December 31, 1967.

Participants' names were randomly selected from the records of the two welfare offices and the respondents interviewed during the summer of 1968. A questionnaire was developed which consisted of twenty primarily open-ended questions and this was administered to a total of sixty couples. …

Measuring Trainee Comprehension Of Casework Relationship In A Public Welfare Orientation Program, Margaret Berweger Apr 1969

Measuring Trainee Comprehension Of Casework Relationship In A Public Welfare Orientation Program, Margaret Berweger

Dissertations and Theses

This study was undertaken as a first step in measuring effectiveness of the Oregon State Public Welfare Orientation Center program in teaching principles of the casework relationship as conceptualized by Felix P. Biestek. This anticipated the development of a reasonably reliable instrument, improvement and validation of which would be undertaken in a subsequent study.

The population tested was made up of male and female college graduates, newly hired by the State, who were then entering a four week orientation program for caseworkers. Their education and experience varied, but all had passed the State Civil Service examination for this position.

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner Apr 1969

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner

Dissertations and Theses

The rise of the middle class to power and influence in European culture and politics in the nineteenth century created the conditions of modern life which to many European intellectuals were distasteful and ominous. They viewed urbanization, commercialization, industrialization and the qualities of life that they engendered, such as anxiety, limitation of freedom, and pervasive mediocrity in cultural expression, as being inimical to the traditional and more reliable values of European civilization or, in some instances, as being incapable of providing the bases for a free and humane existence.

This study focuses on the attack on bourgeois society in Europe …

Value Orientation In Relation To Emphasis In The Process Of Diagnosing The Family In State Of Crisis, Bradford Lynn Everson Apr 1969

Value Orientation In Relation To Emphasis In The Process Of Diagnosing The Family In State Of Crisis, Bradford Lynn Everson

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this project was to explore for the possible existence of value orientations as factors operative in the social work judgment process. The study first tested for differences in value orientation between social workers. The extent to which these value orientations dominate the pre-disposing attitudes of the social worker was to be determined for the case of diagnosis of families in crisis. Utilized as a test for value orientation were five constructs developed by Charles Morris. These constructs as characterized by their titles were: A. Social Restraint and Self-Control; B. Enjoyment in Action; C. Withdrawal and Self-Sufficiency; D. …

A Standardization Of The "Children's Speechreading Test" On Normal Children, Lorna Helen Newcombe

Dissertations and Theses

This study is limited standardization of the "Children's Speechreading Test" designed by Dr. Dolores S. Butt of the University of New Mexico. After studying the development of language skills in young acoustically handicapped children, she randomly selected subjects from 10 nursery schools and primary departments of schools for the deaf and administered her test to these children. The purpose of the present study is to provide a limited standardization of the "Children's speechreading Test" on normal hearing children. Although Dr. Butt indicates some relation of her test to intelligence, no attempt was made in this pilot study to correlate mental …

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The American Electoral College, Norma N. Williams Oct 1968

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The American Electoral College, Norma N. Williams

Dissertations and Theses

The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was greatly divided over the question of how to select the new nation's chief executive. The method finally adopted was a compromise between direct election and election by the national legislature and provided that individual states, as they saw fit, choose electors equal to the total number of Senators and Representatives. From the beginning, most of delegates considered the proposal awkward and irrational almost to the point of absurdity, but as they argued about it, they became convinced that it was then the only plan which could overcome the objections raised by other methods.

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson Oct 1968

Applications Of Modified Wittig Reaction To Butatriene Synthesis, John Pearson

Dissertations and Theses

The preparation of allenes by the condensation of an acyl chloride with a phosphonium ylid and subsequent elimination of an acid salt and a phosphonium oxide has been established by Bestmann and Hartung. It was felt that this process could be expanded to include the synthesis of butatrienes. Butatrienes are stabilized by aromatic substituents while aromatic substituents decrease the nucleophilicity and reactivity of the phosphonium ylids to be used in the synthesis of the butatrienes. The ylids employed were carbomethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, and a new compound, carbethoxyphenylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane, both of which failed to form alkylated condensation products. Both ylids were prepared …

The Electronic Instrumentation For Atmospheric Laser Propagation Studies, Clyde Manford Brown Jr. Aug 1968

The Electronic Instrumentation For Atmospheric Laser Propagation Studies, Clyde Manford Brown Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

The use of laser radiation in atmospheric communication systems is revealing new forms of signal degradation not previously encountered with lower frequency transmitting sources. The coherence and directivity of the laser which is responsible for its increased signal capacity is degraded by the effect of atmospheric distortion. Random fluctuations in the index of refraction (turbulence), Rayleigh scattering, aerosol scattering and other atmospheric effects create fluctuations (boiling, breathing, dancing, attenuation, transit-time dispersion, etc.) within the beam cross section, which when received produce random fluctuations in the receiver output signal. The two systems which are described, are designed to investigate the effect …

This study is concerned with the investigation of students' attitudes and self-concepts following such an outdoor school experience.

The students selected for this study attended a sixth grade class from one of the following Oregon schools: Holy Redeemer and George, of Portland; Eastham, located in Oregon City, and Rainier located in the town of Rainier. The test group …

Solving Random Walk Problems Using Resistive Analogues, Richard D. Morris Aug 1968

Solving Random Walk Problems Using Resistive Analogues, Richard D. Morris

Dissertations and Theses

The classical method of solving random walk problems involves using Markov chain theory. When the particular random walk of interest is written in matrix form using Markov chain theory, the problem must then be solved using a digital computer. To solve all but the most trivial random walk problems by hand would be extremely difficult and time consuming. Very large random walk problems may even prove difficult to solve on the smaller digital computers. This paper intends to demonstrate a method that may be used to solve large random walk problems in a quick and economical manner. This alternate method …

William Morris: Esthetic For Community, F. Eloise Taggart

Dissertations and Theses

This paper analyzes and evaluates William Morris’s esthetic for community. He presented this esthetic in lectures, letters, newspaper articles, and the dream novel of a happier future England, News from Nowhere. At the age of forty-three, after becoming an eminent poet and a well-known decorative design artist, he began to devote most of the last twenty years of his life to generating an interest in the better community. First, he worked with people of the upper and middle classes, then he turned his attention to the working men. I divide the analysis and evaluation of this work of William Morris …

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail Jul 1968

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to study in depth the relationships of individuals in the three social classes in England during the Victorian Age. Since original documents and research material were scarce I used two novels by Thomas Hardy to illustrate the conflicts between representatives of the social classes. In 1891 England was prosperous and many people believed there was no conflict between the classes. Thomas Hardy believed this was untrue and, by method of comparison, wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure to prove his point. This thesis includes research on the two novels, Thomas Hardy’s …

Three Basic Stoneware Glazes For Cone Six Oxidation Which May Be Changed In Color Or Texture By The Addition Of Common Materials Such As Sand, Clay Soil, Crushed Gravel, Or Metal Filings, Carol Hilda Balsiger

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis maintains that glazes may be colored or textured by the addition of common substances such as metal filings, gravels, sands, or local clays. Three basic glazes were chosen: one transparent, one mat, and one semi-mat. To these basic glazes more than fifty inorganic materials were added in separate test batches. A diversity of results was produced ranging from a glossy, sand-speckled glaze to a rough glaze made with aluminum shavings; from a white, iridescent glaze made with gypsum to a dull gun-metal black glaze made with brass shavings; from a transparent colorless glaze made with aspirin tablets to …

Precision Measurements Of The Mössbauer Fraction Of Fe⁵⁷ In Pt, Pd And Cu, Wilbur Lee Nees Jun 1968

Precision Measurements Of The Mössbauer Fraction Of Fe⁵⁷ In Pt, Pd And Cu, Wilbur Lee Nees

Dissertations and Theses

Precision measurements of the Mössbauer fraction of the 14.4 kev Fe⁵⁷ transition were made using the black, wide absorber technique. The Fe⁵⁷ was diffused, as a dilute Mössbauer impurity, into 99.995% purity single crystal chips of Pt, Pd and Cu. By comparing the Debye form of -ln f, corrected for anharmonicity, with our data, we extracted a high and low temperature Debye theta, as well as an anharmonicity coefficient, є, for the three materials. We estimated the accuracy of our data to be ± 1%. From the data we concluded that the Fe⁵⁷ in Cu has stronger force constants and …

Selected Factors In Assessment Of A Group Designated As School Malperformers, Janet E. Bullock, Ronald M. Marshall, E. Frank Oliver, Shizuko H. Sakai Jun 1968

Selected Factors In Assessment Of A Group Designated As School Malperformers, Janet E. Bullock, Ronald M. Marshall, E. Frank Oliver, Shizuko H. Sakai

Dissertations and Theses

This project was an exploratory study of malperformance among 60 children of the seventh grade of Creston Elementary School, Portland, Oregon. This class was described as an unusually disruptive group of students and was considered by the school as one of the most troublesome in the school's history. The study focused on the concept of malperformance itself and the reliability of its assessment. The major hypotheses were these: A. Teachers are consistent among themselves in how they define malperformance and in whom they designate as malperformers. B. Teachers' and students' estimation of the students' level of performance in the dimensions …

In-Service Education For Teachers Of Family Life Education From A Sociological Viewpoint, Helen M. Running May 1968

In-Service Education For Teachers Of Family Life Education From A Sociological Viewpoint, Helen M. Running

Dissertations and Theses

Harmony is found between a specific area of professional family life literature and the results of several surveys from within a particular metropolitan area. Revealed is a teacher inadequacy to the task of family life education in the primary and secondary schools. Deterrents are found to be a lack of both pertinent knowledge and skill.

Having shown consensus that the stated problem exists the further purpose of the thesis is to propose an aid to its remedy. Three factors require attention. Teachers need additional information from both the social and physical sciences. They need an opportunity to become aware of …
