Sculpture For The Secondary Level, Joanne Beckett Peekema May 1973

Sculpture For The Secondary Level, Joanne Beckett Peekema

Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this thesis was to illustrate that secondary students, when motivated to express themselves, can effectively apply to their own work those elements of design relevant to sculptural form.

This unit sought, first, to develop in secondary students a knowledge of sculptural techniques for handling terracotta; second, this unit sought to inspire or motivate the secondary students by utilizing a subject of great interest to them, their own images; third, this unit sought to bring together the students' understanding of the material and their motivation for self expression -- to transform their ideas into three-dimensional works of art; …

A Tectonic Study Of A Part Of The Northern Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, Northeastern Oregon, Kenneth Gordon Neal May 1973

A Tectonic Study Of A Part Of The Northern Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, Northeastern Oregon, Kenneth Gordon Neal

Dissertations and Theses

Upper Triassic metavolcanic and metasedimentary strata in the study area are intruded by the Hurricane Divide and Craig Mountain Plutons of the Late Jurassic-Cretaceous Wallowa Batholith. The Clover Creek Greenstone is overlain by the Martin Bridge Limestone, which is in tum overlain by the Hurwal Argillite; although the sequence is in normal stratigraphic order, contacts are generally tectonic. Concurrent with Early-Middle Jurassic regional deformation, during intermediate to mafic dikes, emplacement of the plutons of the Wallowa Batholith began. The plutons intruded vertically through the greenstone and limestone and then horizontally above the greenstone. This resulted in intense penetrative plastic deformation …

Life Cycle, Additions To Biology, And New Hosts Of Apophallus Donicus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) In Oregon, Delbert Niemi

Dissertations and Theses

Apophallus donicus is examined, its life cycle is described, and certain additions are made to its biology.

It is thought, but not proven, that eggs are eaten by the first intermediate host, the local stream snail Flumenicola virens, and the miracidia escape internally. Mother and daughter rediae stages result, the later producing cercariae which are shed into the water. After burrowing just beneath the skin in suckers (Catostomus macrocheilus Girard), rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum)), squawfish (Ptychocheilus oregonensis Richardson), blackside dace (Rhinichthys osculus nubilus (Girard)), redside shiners (Richardsonius …

Counseling Problems That Accompany The Diagnosis Of Mental Retardation, Betty Daggett, Shirley H. Durkheimer, Abigail M. Lawton May 1973

Counseling Problems That Accompany The Diagnosis Of Mental Retardation, Betty Daggett, Shirley H. Durkheimer, Abigail M. Lawton

Dissertations and Theses

This is a report of a descriptive study in which a random sample of fifty out of four hundred returned questionnaires from parents with a mentally retarded child were analyzed. The foci of analysis were: (1) parental attitudes toward the child; (2) the changes experienced by the family as affected by birth order and sex of the mentally retarded child; (3) how the diagnosis was accomplished; and (4) how in their opinion services during this diagnostic period could be improved.

The data revealed that: (1) protectiveness toward the child is the predominant parental response; (2) negative changes are probably twice …

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler May 1973

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler

Dissertations and Theses

While men do indeed construct self-validating and often peculiar interpretations of the realities of their world the simple fact that these views become consensually shared doctrines of experience does not protect them from the revisionism of historical scrutiny. These perceptions of the world become retrospectively altered as developing bodies of knowledge reject them as being clearly deceptive or anachronistic. The concept of psychopathology, distinguished historically under many rubrics, has not been immune to these same processes of modification, nor has it ever been free of the diverse irrationalities which men of all ages have constructed to explain the etiology and …

Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder May 1973

Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder

Dissertations and Theses

Most research on the urban sonic environment has been recent. One finding has been that physical noise exposure indices calibrate poorly with human noise response. The vagaries of human response to noise have given impetus to research to isolate the factors that differentiate human response to noise. The present thesis continues this research.

The thesis specifies human noise response to occur on three levels: awareness, annoyance, and complaint. The factors that structure each level of noise response are identified in the published Iiterature.

Noise awareness is a function of noise exposure. Noise annoyance is a function of noise exposure to …

Agonistic Behavior And Dominance In Townsend's Chipmunks (Eutamias Townsendii), Paul Evan Sherman May 1973

Agonistic Behavior And Dominance In Townsend's Chipmunks (Eutamias Townsendii), Paul Evan Sherman

Dissertations and Theses

Agonistic behavior and dominance are described for captive Townsend's chipmunks (Eutamias townsendii). A total of 10,739 encounters was recorded; 6441 (59.9%) were agonistic. Chases (58.5%) and displacements (30.8%) were the predominant agonistic behaviors; threats (6.8%) and fights (4.l%) were relatively rare.

Stable, non-triangular hierarchies were rapidly established in 11 of the 12 groups of chipmunks observed; the presence of individuals of equal rank in some groups precluded strict linearity. Dominance positions did not change within a group, but reversals in rank and changes from equal to dominant-subordinate relationships occurred when the membership of groups was changed. One hierarchy …

The Rights Of Students In Public High Schools, Keith James Lindahl May 1973

The Rights Of Students In Public High Schools, Keith James Lindahl

Dissertations and Theses

The United States Bill of Rights guarantees American citizens’ personal freedom and at the same time places limitations on the actions of the various levels of government. Questions arise in regards to the age at which citizens are guaranteed rights and freedoms under the Bill of Rights. The young American citizen, in a public school, has not always enjoyed the exercise of the rights of American citizenship. This paper examines the current status of the rights of public high school students, specifically in the State of Oregon.

First to determine just which rights do apply in Oregon High Schools, court …

A Cross-Class Survey Of Synaesthesia In High School Students And Its Biocultural Implications, Ina Jane Wundram May 1973

A Cross-Class Survey Of Synaesthesia In High School Students And Its Biocultural Implications, Ina Jane Wundram

Dissertations and Theses

It has been suggested in the literature that Synaesthesia, as an expression of syncretic thought, would be more common in non-Western than in Western cultures. Given the lack of availability of widely divergent cultural groups and the general lack of knowledge about the phenomenon, it was decided to study the possibility that synaesthesia in our society might be related to socio-economic class. A group of high school students from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds was studied, and the results suggest that the occurrence of synaesthesia is not related to class. In addition, it was found that 50% of the …

An Investigation Of Vocational Rehabilitation Among Northwest Laryngectomees, Susan L. Leonti Apr 1973

An Investigation Of Vocational Rehabilitation Among Northwest Laryngectomees, Susan L. Leonti

Dissertations and Theses

Rehabilitation for patients recovering from surgical removal of the larynx should include vocational considerations with accompanying economic modifications. The literature pertaining to rehabilitative management of laryngectomees revealed numerous investigations concerned with physical restoration, remedial speech training and psycho-social adjustment, while few studies have been conducted concentrating upon vocational consequences of a laryngectomy.

The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the pre- and post-operative vocational status of laryngectomized patients residing in the Northwestern section of the United States.

The Grim Security Of The Past: The Historiography Of Henry Cabot Lodge, Claude Singer Apr 1973

The Grim Security Of The Past: The Historiography Of Henry Cabot Lodge, Claude Singer

Dissertations and Theses

By birth, education, and association, Henry Cabot Lodge belonged to an established New England tradition of attention to history and respect for historical writing. He lived during troubled times, and he realized, as his writings indicate, that America was rapidly changing, that old habits were disappearing, and that powerful new forces were at work in the nation and the world. How Lodge reacted to these circumstances is reflected, in part, in his historical writing.

This thesis is an examination of Lodge's historiographic efforts. It is an attempt, through an analysis of style and predominant themes, to describe the cultural values …

Indians And Criminal Justice In Early Oregon, 1842-1859, John Samuel Ferrell Apr 1973

Indians And Criminal Justice In Early Oregon, 1842-1859, John Samuel Ferrell

Dissertations and Theses

Indian-white relations in early Oregon are often viewed in terms of warfare and treatymaking, but these are only the most obvious aspects of a larger struggle to resolve cultural conflicts, settle land disputes, and establish order in a new territory. Additional understanding of both white attitudes toward Indians and of Indian exasperation with the settlers may be gained from a study of how criminal justice applied to the red man during the turbulent pre-reservation era.

Prior to the coming of America settlers, Oregon Indians knew the justice of the Hudson's Bay Company. In dealing with personas accused of harming HBC …

The Siletz Indian Reservation, 1855-1900, William Eugene Kent Apr 1973

The Siletz Indian Reservation, 1855-1900, William Eugene Kent

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of my study was to try to bring forth the basic aspects and characteristics of the Siletz Reservation as it was in the nineteenth century. Concentration was placed on the life activities and concerns of a typical resident, while at the same time extremes in behavior and actions were also noted. Thus an entire spectrum of human life was recreated. Government policies and events and changes of the time were noted as to how they affected the life at the reservation.

I did not include all of the information available to me .and all information is not known …

The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch Feb 1973

The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch

Dissertations and Theses

Stone stripes are linear accumulations of rock debris separated by finer material and oriented down the steepest available slope. In north central Oregon, the stone stripes are composed of basalt fragments and occur where the soil mantle averages less than 1 m in depth. They are best developed in areas of higher elevation, usually from about 900 to 1100 m, and are most prominent on convex to straight slopes of 15 to 30 degrees. The stripes vary from a few meters to over 150 in length, and their widths range from 0.3 to over 3 m. The depth of the …

Orestes A. Brownson: An American Traditionalist, Marianne Oswald Feb 1973

Orestes A. Brownson: An American Traditionalist, Marianne Oswald

Dissertations and Theses

Orestes A. Brownson was an American journalist who converted to Catholicism in 1844, at the age of forty-one. He had been writing editorials and occasionally managing publications since 1828 in

connection with religious activities as minister to various sects, Brownson, from the 1830's on, read, reviewed, and kept abreast of European literature concerned with philosophy, social, political, and

economic theory. It was assumed that he continued that practice after his conversion in 1844 and that he would enlist the aid of European Catholic theorists to develop an acceptable Catholic system of thought—particularly since American Catholic literature in the mid-nineteenth century …

A Program Of School Social Work, Phyllis Marie Jaszkowiak Feb 1973

A Program Of School Social Work, Phyllis Marie Jaszkowiak

Dissertations and Theses

School social work is in a state of flux. Traditional casework services in the schools, as the only function of the school social worker, is becoming less viable.

The study of Assumption school and area points out some problem areas, as well as strengths. In view of these problems and strengths, a broadened school social work program is discussed. The program centers around prevention, treatment, and research. A basic principle upon which all is based is a team approach of social work, school, and community. The discussion leads to the community school concept, which is currently seen as one of …

Seven Pairs, Anne Griffin Johnson Jan 1973

Seven Pairs, Anne Griffin Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis project consists of seven pairs of acrylic paintings on canvas. The compositions are arrangements of flat, straight-edged, geometric shapes. The entire surface of each is considered positive, and each shape has a structural relationship to the framing edge of the canvas. Color ideas and surface qualities vary from pair to pair. The works were paired for the sake of (A) emphasizing the object quality of the canvases and their flat, wall-like surfaces, (B) diminishing the immediacy of any single image so that the viewer's attention tends to be focused on the whole rather than on parts, and (C) …

Verbal Sequencing Ability As A Predictor Of Reading Disability, Paul Elmer Quin Jan 1973

Verbal Sequencing Ability As A Predictor Of Reading Disability, Paul Elmer Quin

Dissertations and Theses

Early identification of children with reading and learning problems seems imperative. By using early identification predictors, a high risk group of children with possible reading problems could be located. This would facilitate placement and appropriate educational strategies for this group of children. By proper placement and planning, educators then would be able to set up remedial and/or preventive programs for these children before the pattern of unsuccessful attempts and improper training becomes irreversible. This study was designed to determine if verbal sequencing ability was a valid predictor of reading ability for a group of 31 preschool children. Secondarily, the investigation …

Solid Casting In Aluminum And Concrete Using The Multiple-Piece Plaster Mold: A Method Of Introducing The Adolescent Student To The Indirect Method Of Sculpture, Donald Leroy Sandblast Jan 1973

Solid Casting In Aluminum And Concrete Using The Multiple-Piece Plaster Mold: A Method Of Introducing The Adolescent Student To The Indirect Method Of Sculpture, Donald Leroy Sandblast

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis deals with an investigation of the feasibility of using the multiple-piece plaster mold as a vehicle for teaching the indirect method of sculpture to the adolescent student. It is based upon the assumption that the students involved in the processes described will have had previous experience with the tools, techniques, and materials to be used. The investigation centered around the ability of the students to express themselves through the development of a sculptural form. The teacher's role was to assist the student identifying, expressing, and evaluating his individual goals against those goals established by the teacher. Instructional goals …

Photosynthesis And Respiration Of Arceuthobium Tsugense, James Roger Miller Jan 1973

Photosynthesis And Respiration Of Arceuthobium Tsugense, James Roger Miller

Dissertations and Theses

Dark respiration rates of the aerial shoots of Arceuthobium tsugense, obtained by manometric and IRGA techniques, show production of C02to range between 155-300 µl CO2 g-1h-1 with evidence of seasonal variation. Experiments with 14C02 indicate that the aerial shoots are capable of some photosynthetic CO2 fixation, with 10-15% of the available 14C incorporated by the plant tissue in one hour. The portions of the o aerial shoots which are most active in C02 fixation are the young terminal regions. Biochemical characterization of the products of photosynthesis reveals that 80-90% of …

Aspects Of The Physiology And Diseases Of The North American Elk, Yvonne Bernard Weber Jan 1973

Aspects Of The Physiology And Diseases Of The North American Elk, Yvonne Bernard Weber

Dissertations and Theses

Several aspects of the physiology and diseases of the North American elk (Cervus canadensis) were investigated, toward the goal of uncovering influences responsible for declining productivity among some elk herds in Oregon.

A newly developed drug, Etorphine, together with its antagonistic companion, Dip renorphine, was used to immobilize elk. Substantial differences were found in the amounts required and animal responses dependent upon age, physical condition and life history.

Whole blood samples were obtained from 60 living elk for hematological studies. The parameters examined included hemoglobin levels, packed cell volume, erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, …

A New Inquiring System For Technology Transfer And Its Role In Planning And Policymaking, Kishandutt Jaydayal Sharma Jan 1973

A New Inquiring System For Technology Transfer And Its Role In Planning And Policymaking, Kishandutt Jaydayal Sharma

Dissertations and Theses

The importance of technology transfer to produce structural change in developing regions has been well established. However, most previous transfers to developing regions have been unplanned or triggered by actions rather than decisions. Most previous inquiries have been based on unidimensional, sectorial and mostly economic views of technology transfer; this author believes these to be inadequate representations of the transfer process. This dissertation proposes a new inquiring system for technology transfer; one which emphasizes a multidimensional viewpoint of the technology transfer process. Further, this dissertation claims to make three unique contributions: 1. a new hierarchical structure for examining the technology …

A Reinterpretation Of The Oregon School Bill Of 1922 : The Concept Of The Common School In Progressive America., Stephen Louis Recken

Dissertations and Theses

The Oregon School Bill of 1922 would have required all school age children to attend public schools. Beginning as an initiative measure sponsored by the Scottish Rite Masons it was passed by the voters in the general election in the Fall of 1922. Shortly after its passage representatives of private and parochial schools began a court battle against the bill which ended in the United States Supreme Court. Affirming the decision of a lower court it declared the Bill to be unconstitutional. While public interest in the Bill was great during the campaign, it soon dwindled and by 1925 the …

Identifying And Defining Natural Service Delivery Systems, James R. Garrison, William J. Teverbaugh Jan 1973

Identifying And Defining Natural Service Delivery Systems, James R. Garrison, William J. Teverbaugh

Dissertations and Theses

One aspect of reality that professional social workers are experiencing in the course of performing social work is what the authors will refer to as natural service delivery systems. We use this particular term for clarity, yet there are questions that still remain. Are there, in fact, measurable phenomena that we can call natural service delivery systems? If these systems exist, what kind of services do they deliver or what types of services do they imply? If these services do exist and if we recognize them, what are the implications for professional social workers? How does our knowledge base allow …

Chinese Attitudes And Knowledge Concerning Social Services: A Survey Of The Portland Chinese Community, Laura Lum Sing, Wendy Po-Kow Chan, Peter Tau-Ping Wang Jan 1973

Chinese Attitudes And Knowledge Concerning Social Services: A Survey Of The Portland Chinese Community, Laura Lum Sing, Wendy Po-Kow Chan, Peter Tau-Ping Wang

Dissertations and Theses

The professional social worker needs to understand, wide social issues, including the culture and cultural background of minority persons and groups in the United States. One minority group with which social work has not much contact, and thus has little knowledge about, is the Chinese. Regarding professional social work knowledge about minority groups, the Chinese could be considered a "silent minority."
