An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Degree Of Maintained Fluency Improvement Of Former Portland State University Stuttering Clients And The Overall Language Themes They Used, Karen F. Mathew

Dissertations and Theses

This research examined the relationship between the degree of maintained fluency improvement and the type of language used to respond to questions directly and indirectly related to speaking behavior. The subjects included sixteen former Portland State University stuttering clients who had participated in the Ginter (1979) study on fluency maintenance. The subjects responded to a thirteen item questionnaire dealing with themselves and their speaking behavior. Responses were recorded on the Modified Thematic Analysis Form developed by this examiner and analyzed according to guidelines set down by Stone and Casteel (1975) and this examiner.

Following The Drum: British Women In The Peninsular War, Sheila Simonson Mar 1981

Following The Drum: British Women In The Peninsular War, Sheila Simonson

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the lives of British women, soldiers' and officers' wives, for the most part, who followed the British army on campaign in Portugal, Spain, and southern France during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Because most of the women were of the working class, their major roles, as wives, mothers, widows, workers, and criminals, have been contrasted with those roles as defined in British working-class culture.

No direct female sources exist for this war. Information was therefore gathered from male diarists, letter writers and memoirists of the period, using modern research into working-class behavior in the early industrial period as …

Isolation And Characterization Of Frullanolide From Frullania Franciscana (Howe), Marshall Stuart Sass Mar 1981

Isolation And Characterization Of Frullanolide From Frullania Franciscana (Howe), Marshall Stuart Sass

Dissertations and Theses

Investigation of the ether extract of the liverwort Frullania franciscana (Howe) resulted in the isolation of the sesquiterpene lactone frullanolide. The separation techniques of thin-layer chromatography, dry column chromatography, and liquid column chromatography were evaluated. Only liquid column chromatography was found useful. Fractions from alumina liquid column separations had infrared spectra which resembled the published spectrum of frullanolide. The identity of the compound obtained from F. franciscana (Howe) was established after extensive purification by comparison of its infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra with published spectra of frullanolide.

The Prosecutors Of Socrates And The Political Motive Theory, Thomas Patrick Kelly Feb 1981

The Prosecutors Of Socrates And The Political Motive Theory, Thomas Patrick Kelly

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents a critical analysis of the historical roles assigned to the prosecutors of Socrates by modern historians.

Ancient sources relating to the trial and the principles involved, and modern renditions, especially those of John Burnet and A. E. Taylor, originators of the theory that the trial of Socrates was politically motivated, are critically analyzed and examined.

The thesis concludes that the political motive theory is not supported by the evidence on which it relies.

The Structure, Geologic Evolution And Regional Significance Of The Bethel Creek-North Fork Area, Coos And Curry Counties, Oregon, Carl Fredrick Gullixson

Dissertations and Theses

The original purpose of this study was a detailed structural analysis of the Jurassic Otter Point Formation in order to determine if the Canyonville Fault Zone, which forms the northern boundary of the Klamath Mountains in the Riddle - Canyonville area (Benson and Perttu, 1980), extends westward to the coast and, if possible, to characterize the structure of the Otter Point Formation. Further, a detailed examination of the structural and stratigraphic relationships between the Otter Point Formation and the Eocene Roseburg and Lookingglass Formations was to be performed in an attempt to determine the tectonic history of the area.

A Stratigraphic And Geochemical Investigation Of Ferruginous Bauxite Deposits In The Salem Hills, Marion County, Oregon, Charles William Hoffman Jan 1981

A Stratigraphic And Geochemical Investigation Of Ferruginous Bauxite Deposits In The Salem Hills, Marion County, Oregon, Charles William Hoffman

Dissertations and Theses

Pacific Northwest ferruginous bauxite deposits have formed in four main areas of northwestern Oregon and southwestern Washington by laterization of flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG). The deposits, averaging 36.3% Al2O3 , 31.8% Fe2O3 , and 5.9% Sio2, generally occur near the surface of hilltops in gently rolling areas. Two very different views have been advanced regarding the setting in which the deposits have formed. The first hypothesis calls for a blanket-type laterization by erosion of much of the original deposit upon uplift and dissection of the area.

Do self-efficacy and social supports act as intervening variables to buffer the negative effects of stress on one's health when coping with loss? …

Police Patrol Deployment In Small Urban Centers: An Application Of Integrated Management Decision-Making, Robert Wayne Taylor Jan 1981

Police Patrol Deployment In Small Urban Centers: An Application Of Integrated Management Decision-Making, Robert Wayne Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation was undertaken to examine and review the theoretical issues concerning decision-making. From this analysis, a new and innovative technique for problem-solving was developed, entitled Integrated Management Decision-making. The underlying theoretical framework of this model involved the integration of the organization and the environment. Political, economic, social, cultural, and other community factors were discussed as major influences in the decision-making process. Integrated Management Decision-Making was derived from the combination of four existing theoretical perspectives: (1) decision-making is a process; (2) decision-making involves the ability to make rational choices; (3) decision-making involves the ability to make rational choices; (3) decision-making …

Physical Effects Of 3-Phenylindole On Ion Transport Across Bilayer Lipid Membranes, Barbara A. Sinha Jan 1981

Physical Effects Of 3-Phenylindole On Ion Transport Across Bilayer Lipid Membranes, Barbara A. Sinha

Dissertations and Theses

The compound 3-phenylindole (3PI) is a particularly active antimicrobial which interacts with phospholipids in fungal mycelia membranes, and which strongly inhibits the uptake of phosphate into fungal mycelia. The physical effects of 3PI on ion transport across bilayer lipid membranes composed of phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol have been investigated using three lipophilic ions and one ion/carrier complex. It was found that 3PI increased the electrical conductivity induced by the lipophilic cation (tetraphenylarsonium) and by the positively charged complex (nonactin-K('+)) by several orders of magnitude whereas 3PI decreased the conductivity induced by the two lipophilic anions (tetraphenylborate, dipicrylamine) by a factor of less than …

The Political And Constitutional Significance Of The Exclusion Crisis Of 1678-1681, Susan Diane Meyer-Strom Jan 1981

The Political And Constitutional Significance Of The Exclusion Crisis Of 1678-1681, Susan Diane Meyer-Strom

Dissertations and Theses

By examining the attack waged against the royal prerogative during the Exclusion Crisis of 1678-1681, this thesis asserts that the crisis was primarily constitutional in nature, rather than religious. This Parliamentary attempt to remove the Catholic heir presumptive from the succession endangered the monarchy by creating a Parliamentary title to the throne. Insofar as the exclusionists challenged the king's right to retain ministers at will, to grant pardons, and to determine the calling and dissolution of Parliamentary sessions, the crisis also constituted a direct assault upon the prerogatives of the present king. The implementation of Parliament's proposal to guarantee a …

Plasmid-Mediated Resistance To Arsenite And Arsenate In Escherichia Coli, Thomas Patrick Trezona Jan 1981

Plasmid-Mediated Resistance To Arsenite And Arsenate In Escherichia Coli, Thomas Patrick Trezona

Dissertations and Theses

Bacterial strains resistant to arsenite, arsenate (or both) are readily isolated from nature. The resistance, in many cases, can be shown to be determined by conjugal plasmids. The mechanisms by which these plasmids confer resistance to arsenic compounds are entirely unknown. This study was undertaken to shed light on some of the physiological and genetic aspects of this resistance using plasmid-bearing strains of Escherichia coli which are highly resistant to both arsenite and arsenate. Most studies were carried out using E. coli J53 (R773) or the plasmid-free strain J53.

Mission Of Protest : General John Armstrong's Response To The Continental System, 1806-1810, Thom M. Armstrong

Dissertations and Theses

Although not well known to students of American history today, General John Armstrong was, in his day, a prominent and colorful public figure. From 1804 to 1810, he held the difficult position of United States Minister to France at a time when the world was in upheaval resulting from the Napoleonic Ware. As Great Britain and France struggled for supremacy, the United States--the world's foremost neutral commercial power--was slowly, but inevitably, drawn into this struggle, becoming the victim of the hostile edicts of the two major belligerents, as they wantonly violated established practices of international law.
