Iron Acquisition By Cyanobacteria: Siderophore Production And Iron Transport By Anabaena, Peter James Lammers Jan 1982

Iron Acquisition By Cyanobacteria: Siderophore Production And Iron Transport By Anabaena, Peter James Lammers

Dissertations and Theses

The cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. (PCC #6411) is known to produce the siderophore, schizokinen, in response to iron limitation. Environmental factors which influence schizokinen production have been examined utilizing a bioassay method based upon the stimulation of growth of the siderophore-requiring bacterium Arthrobacter flavescens JG-9. Schizokinen production by Anabaena increased in low-iron media and was stimulated approximately five-fold media containing one millimolar citric acid. Growth of Anabaena under nitrogen-fixing conditions reduced extracellular schizokinen concentrations 3-4 fold, in late growth phase, compared to cells grown on nitrate. Cells grown in ammonium-containing medium yielded intermediate concentrations of schizokinen. The Csaky assay, which is …

The Effect Of Chronic Post-Natal Protein Deprivation On The Social Interaction Of The Rhesus Macaque, Gertrude Alice Fogle Jan 1982

The Effect Of Chronic Post-Natal Protein Deprivation On The Social Interaction Of The Rhesus Macaque, Gertrude Alice Fogle

Dissertations and Theses

It has been well documented that protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) gives rise to physiological and behavioral deficits. These deficits include changes in emotional, exploratory and social behaviors of the malnourished organism. In particular, previous research has demonstrated that Feci from infancy results in avoidance of and failure to initiate social interactions as well as decreased contact with the environment, which in turn, further disrupt emotional and social development. This study examined the effects of chronic protein malnutrition on the social behavior of adult rhesus macaques by experimentally testing the hypothesis that deficient monkeys, unlike normal well-fed ones, are more likely …

Adolescent use of both marijuana and alcohol is found to be modal by age 16-17. The physical, cognitive and social effects are pervasive and especially damaging to chronic …

Role-Taking And Behavior, Jane Wynne Uphoff Jan 1982

Role-Taking And Behavior, Jane Wynne Uphoff

Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relationship between the cognitive skill of role-or perspective-taking and naturally occurring behavior of behaviorally disordered children. Twenty-six boys, aged five years, nine months to twelve years, two months were tested and observed at their treatment facility. It was predicted that children who could take the perspective of others would prefer peer to adult interaction, would more likely give positive attention to their peers and would be more likely to use effective language than their non perspective-taking peers. These and related hypotheses were examined by observing each participant's interactive behavior for 36 minutes distributed over three …

The Relationship Of Role Organization And Role Deprivation To Nurses' Views Toward The Requirement For Entry Into Professional Practice And Its Related Issues, Paula G. Morton

Dissertations and Theses

A national resolution to alter the educational and practice requirements for nurses by 1985 has been adopted in Oregon. It has been theorized that how nurses organize their multiple roles and the degrees of role deprivation they experience will affect their views toward professional issues. Prior research suggests there be a relationship between certain demographic variables and nurses' role organization and role deprivation.

The study sought to establish the relationship of selected demographic variables and the variables of type of role organization and deprivation to nurses' views of four facets of the 1985 Resolution. The intent was to examine the …

The Copper Complexation Properties Of Dissolved Organic Matter From The Williamson River, Oregon, Charles Russell Lytle Jan 1982

The Copper Complexation Properties Of Dissolved Organic Matter From The Williamson River, Oregon, Charles Russell Lytle

Dissertations and Theses

Recent research has indicated that dissolved organic matter (DOM) may plan an important role in the ability of natural waters to complex metals. This research was conducted because the quantitative nature of this role is uncertain. Gas-liquid chromatography was used to study the hydrolyzable amino acids at twelve sampling sites on the Williamson River at monthly intervals for two years. The relative abundances showed little spacial or temporal variation. The two-year averages for total amino acids ranged from about 0.5 (mu)M to about 8 (mu)M. A separation technique was used to show that (GREATERTHEQ) 96% of the dissolved amino acids …

The Effect Of Parent-Child Interaction On The Language Development Of The Hearing-Impaired Child, Arla J. Melum Jan 1982

The Effect Of Parent-Child Interaction On The Language Development Of The Hearing-Impaired Child, Arla J. Melum

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years much interest has been focused on the manner in which the young child acquires language. Some researchers (Chomsky, 1965; McNeil) have postulated an inherent capacity to comprehend and utilize linguistic structures, while others such as Irwin, (1960), Hess and Shipman (1965), and Greenstein, et al, (1974) have focused on experiential determinants of language competence in early childhood. As with all children, the social and emotional behavior of deaf children is greatly influenced by their ability to communicate with significant others. Interactions between the normally developing child and his parents are characterized by mutual responsiveness, where each initiates …

Impacts Of Environmental Design On Residential Crowding, Ed Tieh-Yeu Huang Jan 1982

Impacts Of Environmental Design On Residential Crowding, Ed Tieh-Yeu Huang

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the following research questions: How do physical features of high density college dormitories affect residents' perception of crowding, and what kinds of design strategies are available for alleviating the perceived crowding? The data source was responses to a self-administered questionnaire from residents of living units which were randomly sampled from three dormitories of comparable physical density at Oregon State University. Seven hypotheses were used to examine the relationship between perceived crowding and physical features associated with different settings in selected dormitories. The first hypothesis sought to clarify how selected physical variables, compared with selected social and personal …

Housing The Low-Income, Urban Elderly: A Role For The Single Room Occupancy Hotel, Mary Ann Burki Jan 1982

Housing The Low-Income, Urban Elderly: A Role For The Single Room Occupancy Hotel, Mary Ann Burki

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the question of whether there is a role for the single room occupancy (SRO) hotel as a form of housing for a select group of low-income, urban elderly persons. Such a focus was selected because it is the single room type of housing, with neither individual kitchen nor bath, which HUD defines as substandard. This definition is viewed as problematic for several reasons. First, it has been a major barrier to the use of Federal funds to support such housing either through rehabilitation or rent subsidy, and second, it has been a major incentive to the use …

The Articulation Of Formal And Informal Helping: The Influence Of Organizational Context On Relationships Between Professional And Lay Caregivers, Priscilla J. Kimboko Jan 1982

The Articulation Of Formal And Informal Helping: The Influence Of Organizational Context On Relationships Between Professional And Lay Caregivers, Priscilla J. Kimboko

Dissertations and Theses

This research is an exploratory study of thirty human service agencies' programs to link their services to informal helpers in their communities. The helpers were persons identified as important helping resources to persons in their own social networks, who were often also clients of the service agency. The thirty agencies were drawn from across the nation, and served several different types of client populations and needs. Models from practice and theory suggest that linkages between the formal and informal caregiving systems should be modeled after primary relations, informal and personal in character. Research and literature on organizations suggests, however, that …

An experimental study of the effects of active participation on student learning was conducted with two levels of treatment of the independent variable. Intact groups were used because it was reasoned that results generated in classroom settings would likely be more generalizable to other classroom settings. The study was conducted in a medium-sized suburban school district mainly residential in character. Five project teachers were trained to teach a lesson on simple probability. Each teacher taught four lessons to fifth grade classes, two with Treatment I (active student participation) and two with Treatment II (no active student participation). The lessons were …

Investigation Of The Contribution Of Aquatic Humus To The Transport Of Ddt In The Environment, Dan Philip Blunk Jan 1982

Investigation Of The Contribution Of Aquatic Humus To The Transport Of Ddt In The Environment, Dan Philip Blunk

Dissertations and Theses

The fate and transport of insoluble, hydrophobic organic pollutants in the aquatic environment constitutes a prominent area of concern. It is thought that pollutants of this nature may exist in association with organic carbon, which is predominantly aquatic humus. This type of association could significantly affect the kinetics of such transformation processes as volatilization or chemical and biological degradation of the pollutant. While dissolved organic matter (DOM) comprises the bulk of organic carbon (or aquatic humus) in natural waters, the interaction between naturally occurring DOM and insoluble organic pollutants has not been quantified. The work presented in this dissertation is …

Proverbs : Tools For World View Studies : An Exploratory Comparison Of The Bemba Of Zambia And The Shona Of Zimbabwe, Larry L. Niemeyer

Dissertations and Theses

The proverbs of people - defined by Webster as short sayings "in common use expressing a well-known truth or common fact ascertained by experience or observation" - have been an object of study to many kinds of people for many decades. Robert R. Marett has said that proverbs are a key to both the language and culture of a people. But, knowledge of the language and culture of a people, in itself, cannot be satisfying to the discerning anthropologist. An effort must be made to identify and understand the categories of thought, codes and symbols that undergird their language and …

Voles (Microtus spp.) were the principal prey year-round, though waterfowl were more important in terms of biomass in the winter and early spring. Territory sizes on the …

A Study Of Factors Affecting Cognitive Style In Mexican-American Children, Anne Kelter Gehrig Jan 1982

A Study Of Factors Affecting Cognitive Style In Mexican-American Children, Anne Kelter Gehrig

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years cognitive style has become the focus of much educational research. Many educators believe that instructional effectiveness can be maximized by utilizing the student's preferred cognitive style as a springboard for introducing new concepts as well as by restructuring educational practices so that the child learns to deal effectively with diverse cognitive styles. Early research on cognitive style focused solely on behavioral indicators. Today many researchers acknowledge that, in order to understand cognitive style, one must examine brain processing, as different styles of thinking result from the manner in which each hemisphere of the brain processes information.

This …
