A Longitudinal Study Of Recidivism For 88 Forest Camp Inmates, Loreli S. Manning
A Longitudinal Study Of Recidivism For 88 Forest Camp Inmates, Loreli S. Manning
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent a group of 88 subjects, who were sentenced to the Forest Camp in the early seventies, remained law abiding in the ten years which followed their release. In addition to analyzing recidivist patterns, the study attempted to identify which variables were associated with subsequent recidivist and non-recidivist behavior and relate those findings to previous studies in the literature.

Fort Ross: Russian Colony In California, 1811-1841, Kathryn E. Mitchell
Dissertations and Theses
The essential objective of this study was to fill a bibliographic void of secondary source material concerning Russian California. This was accomplished by combining available translations and more specific studies on the subject into one extensive work. Introductory chapters provide: (1) a brief statement regarding Russia's massive eastward expansion through Siberia, to Kamchatka and Alaska; (2) an examination of the nature of the Russian-American Company; and (3) a detailed look at the programs instituted by the Company to provision Alaska and Kamchatka. The establishment of Fort Ross in 1811 is viewed as one of those programs. The settlement's primary function …
Counseling The Batterer, Robert Oliver Brown
Counseling The Batterer, Robert Oliver Brown
Dissertations and Theses
Domestic violence has received increasing attention in recent years as an area of concern for the helping professional. Despite this interest, programs for counseling the batterer are relatively few and counseling interventions for use with this client population are in what could be termed an experimental phase. The purpose of Counseling the Batterer is to review the pertinent literature concerned with counseling the batterer, to explore several programs which have been involved in this effort, and also to design a model group counseling program for abusive males. The foundation for the model program is based on the pertinent literature and …
Inquiry Into The Causes And Significance Of Cytoplasmic Vacuolation Of Neutrophils In The Peripheral Circulation, Gary Xavier Haight
Inquiry Into The Causes And Significance Of Cytoplasmic Vacuolation Of Neutrophils In The Peripheral Circulation, Gary Xavier Haight
Dissertations and Theses
One-half million cases of septicemia are reported annually with a mortality of around 35%. Diagnosis depends in part on blood cultures which require one to two weeks. It would be advantageous if an early sign of septicemia were available.
Cytoplasmic vacuolation of polymorphonuclear neutropnils is occasionally seen in the peripheral blood smears of patients who have infections. The object of this work was to determine the cause and significance of cytoplasmic vacuolation with the goal of using the occurrence of vacuolation as an early indicator of infection.

Body Weight Changes Throughout The Menstrual Cycle And Their Effect Upon The Components Of Body Composition, Lovina M. Query
Body Weight Changes Throughout The Menstrual Cycle And Their Effect Upon The Components Of Body Composition, Lovina M. Query
Dissertations and Theses
Research has shown that women experience fluctuations in body weight (BW) due to water retention and/or other processes at various times in the menstrual cycle. The purpose of this study is to measure women repeatedly throughout the course of one menstrual cycle and
(1) to confirm whether significant fluctuations in weight occur at various times and
(2) to determine whether there are significant differences in the components of body composition by hydrostatic weighing which are related to any changes in BW.
It was concluded that while significant fluctuations in BW occur at certain times in the menstrual cycle, the changes …

Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to determine the degree of homophobia, expressed lesbian sexual preference behavior, and attitudes toward lesbianism among the female team sport college athlete and the female team sport recreational player. It was hypothesized that the female team sport college athlete would be less homophobic, would express greater lesbian sexual preference behavior, and would possess more positive attitudes toward lesbianism than the female team sport recreational player. There were 32 female team sport college athletes representing four Utah university/college campuses and one Oregon university/college campus; 37 female team sport recreational players representing four Utah recreational team and two …
Developmental Sentence Scoring: A Comparative Study Conducted In Portland, Oregon, Kathryn Marie Mccluskey
Developmental Sentence Scoring: A Comparative Study Conducted In Portland, Oregon, Kathryn Marie Mccluskey
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to replicate the study conducted by Lee and Canter (1971) and Lee (1974a) to determine if a significant difference among the scores in the two studies existed due to geographical location, and to initiate the establishment of norms for the Portland, Oregon geographical area. Forty children, selected on the basis of chronological age (4.0 to 4.11 years), normal receptive vocabulary skills, normal hearing, and a monolingual background, participated as subjects. A language sample of fifty utterances was elicited from each child and analyzed according to the Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) procedure.
A Comparison Of Measures Of Emotions From Written Reports Of Dreams And Waking Experiences, Edward D. Conklin
A Comparison Of Measures Of Emotions From Written Reports Of Dreams And Waking Experiences, Edward D. Conklin
Dissertations and Theses
Various researchers have noted that emotions expressed in dream reports are infrequent and, more often, unpleasant. These observations are ambiguous for several reasons: (1) Empirical opinions differ markedly with regard to the structure of mentation across the continuum of waking and sleeping experience. (2) While the waking state is usually assumed as an implicit baseline, few studies have quantitatively compared waking and dream emotions. (3) Dream researchers have not thought about the basic nature of emotions or certain constraints which sleep physiology might impose upon emotions. In light of these assertions and considerations, an intrasubject comparison of emotions in reports …

Tiltmeter Analysis Of Mount St. Helens, Skamania County, Washington, Edward Charles Brown
Dissertations and Theses
Mount St. Helens returned to an active eruptive state March 20, 1980. Since then explosive and dome building eruptions have caused major topographic changes to the mountain and surrounding drainages. Monitoring of the southern side of the mountain by six tiltmeters at distances between 6 km and 12 km was conducted during the period of July 1, 1980 to December 31, 1980. Records obtained from the tiltmeters were analyzed and compared to data from precision geodetic surveys.

Evaluating Urban Containment Programs, Arthur C. Nelson
Evaluating Urban Containment Programs, Arthur C. Nelson
Dissertations and Theses
Urban containment programs may be evaluated in terms of a theory unifying contributions from the economic, geographic and political science disciplines. The unified theory shows that successful programs will segment the urban-rural land market, remove speculative use value of rural land, and result in the urban land market valuing greenbelt proximity as an amenity. A general model to test urban containment programs against the unified theory is developed and then modified for application to Salem, Oregon. Results are fourfold. First, a gap in the locus of urban and rural land values at the UGB indicates that segmentation of the urban-rural …
The Outcomes Of A Quality Circle Program In An Electronics Manufacturing Firm, Martin L. Abbott
The Outcomes Of A Quality Circle Program In An Electronics Manufacturing Firm, Martin L. Abbott
Dissertations and Theses
The literature on worker participation generally assumes that worker participation programs lead to positive work outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction) in more or less direct fashion. The current study challenges this assumption and posits that "desire for participation," and "attitudes toward participation," may affect the participation-satisfaction relationship. Data were gathered from a quality circle (QC) program at a large electronics manufacturing firm, using both quantitative (survey questionnaire), and qualitative (interviews, observation, meeting attendance) means. QC members and non members were compared on all attitude measures, and on general job satisfaction. The results indicated the following: (a) the participation-satisfaction thesis was not …

Determination Of Toluene's Degradation Products Under Simulated Atmospheric Conditions, Bruce E. Dumdei
Determination Of Toluene's Degradation Products Under Simulated Atmospheric Conditions, Bruce E. Dumdei
Dissertations and Theses
The reactions of aromatic hydrocarbons represent a major area of uncertainty in urban atmospheric photochemistry. Much effort has been spent studying the simulated atmospheric oxidation chemistry of model aromatics, such as toluene, in order to delineate their reaction mechanisms. These studies are motivated both by interest in fundamental processes and a desire to discover an aromatic's contribution to the formation of ozone in polluted ambient atmospheres. Previous work on toluene includes both product studies and proposed mechanisms. In all previous studies, the combined product yields are half or less of the initially reacted toluene. A major reason for the poor …
The Role Of The Family In Delinquency Causation: An Interactional View, James W. Burfeind
The Role Of The Family In Delinquency Causation: An Interactional View, James W. Burfeind
Dissertations and Theses
American society traditionally has held the family responsible for the socialization and social control of children, and when youngsters get into trouble the causal finger of blame is pointed at the family. No wonder then that a recurrent issue within the study of delinquent behavior has been the precise etiological role of the family. This thesis begins with an historical examination of the different approaches taken in the sociological study of delinquency and the family. This research investigated whether "interactive effects" are important in conceptualizing and understanding the family's etiological role. The concept of interaction is based upon the assumption …
Fringe Area Growth In Metropolitan Portland: An Analysis Of Space-Time Variations In Residential Housing And Land Conversion, 1970-1980, Sheku Gibril Kamara
Fringe Area Growth In Metropolitan Portland: An Analysis Of Space-Time Variations In Residential Housing And Land Conversion, 1970-1980, Sheku Gibril Kamara
Dissertations and Theses
Urban ecological problems have hitherto been addressed using one of two major approaches. The first has a social impetus directed at ethnic, economic and family characteristics and their relationships with the spatial distribution of urban residential housing. The second approach emphasizes the influence of the physical environment and the services available to subareas. The sociological method has had much more attention in modeling applications than the physical analytic technique. This study adopts the physical approach with a focus that is emphatic on infrastructural factors and land attributes, and their influence on the differential rates of fringe area residential growth in …

Stepfamily Adjustment: A Balance Theory Analysis Including The Noncustodial Parent As A Member Of The Family System, Margaret L. Fujita
Stepfamily Adjustment: A Balance Theory Analysis Including The Noncustodial Parent As A Member Of The Family System, Margaret L. Fujita
Dissertations and Theses
This study developed a balance theory analysis of stepfamily relationships in order to understand family adjustment and empirically tested hypotheses derived from that analysis. Sentiment and unit relations between the stepparent, natural parent, and adolescent child, and between these stepfamily members and the nonresident (absent) natural parent were included in the analysis. The assumption of balance theory is that sentiment (affective) relations and unit relations (the perception of belonging together) tend toward a balanced state. If a balanced state does not exist, the imbalance will produce tension. The general hypothesis tested was that the degree of balance of the stepfamily …

Retirement Satisfaction And The Timing Of The Retirement Age: An Analysis Of Retirees And Older Workers From A Fortune 500 Firm, Donna Elaine Stuteville
Dissertations and Theses
This study focuses the effects of demographic characteristics, health status, income, work attitudes, and leisure activity involvements have on satisfaction in retirement and the retirement timing decision. The review of the literature revealed that no single variable alone is the predictor of retirement satisfaction and the timing of the retirement decision. Therefore, a conceptual model was developed to measure the two central research questions. The conceptual model is based on five categorical factors as the determinants of retirement satisfaction and timing. The five main factors in the model are: demographic characteristics, health status, income level, work attitudes and leisure activity …

Information, Constraint, And Meaning, Martin Zwick
Information, Constraint, And Meaning, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite the familiar and correct disclaimer that information theory (Shannon and Weaver, 1949) does not concern the semantic level of communication, the technical definition of information nonetheless bears directly and importantly on the subject of meaning. Meaning, at least in one sense of the word, is the recognition of constraint and is based on isomorphism of structure. Constraint reduces information yet information is also the very substrate of meaning. Meaning is thus the union of the informative and the intelligible (Moles, 1958), the reconciliation of this dialectical opposition being achievable in several different ways.
