American Foreign Policy: The Utility Of Force As An Influence, Bargaining, Or Coercive Force In The Caribbean Basin, Susan M. Marandas
American Foreign Policy: The Utility Of Force As An Influence, Bargaining, Or Coercive Force In The Caribbean Basin, Susan M. Marandas
Dissertations and Theses
Throughout history states have pursued both cooperative and power-oriented strategies. Moralists and realists have long questioned the appropriateness of using force to gain state objectives. Recent analysts have stressed that states have a moral duty to manage international uncertainty in the best interests of their citizens. While this might involve utilizing both power-seeking and order-seeking strategies, it has been suggested that pursuing order-seeking strategies could help alleviate international uncertainty.
An historical survey, as well as recent case studies in Grenada and Nicaragua, indicate that the United States often has relied upon military strategies in the Caribbean Basin. The United States …
German-Czech Conflict In Cisleithania: The Question Of The Ethnographic Partition Of Bohemia, 1848-1919, Nicholas Aldorde
German-Czech Conflict In Cisleithania: The Question Of The Ethnographic Partition Of Bohemia, 1848-1919, Nicholas Aldorde
Dissertations and Theses
Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, the former Crownlands of Austria-Hungary which now make up the western half of Czechoslovakia, had for centuries a population mixture of 40% German, 60% Czech. The national reawakening of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries pitted the majority Czechs against their German minority master. This, coupled with the social upheavals caused by the industrial revolution, brought Czechs and Germans in Bohemia to center stage in the nationality conflict in the multinational Empire.
The Effects Of A Course In American Jokes On A Class Of Intermediate Level Esl Students, John Randolph Carruthers
The Effects Of A Course In American Jokes On A Class Of Intermediate Level Esl Students, John Randolph Carruthers
Dissertations and Theses
Teachers of English to speakers of other languages have often incorporated humor in the curriculum, yet a recent computer search revealed that there were no empirical studies which have shown that curricular humor enhances English language learning. The three specific questions of the thesis are: does the use of curricular humor 1) improve memory/recall, 2) improve over-all English proficiency, and 3) result in the subjects' having more positive attitudes towards Americans, and if so, does a more positive attitude correlate with improved memory/proficiency?

Stratigraphy Of The Ohanapecosh Formation North Of Hamilton Buttes, Southcentral Washington, Cynthia Marie Stine
Dissertations and Theses
Over 1055 m of early Oligocene andesitic-dacitic volcaniclastic rocks and minor interbedded andesitic lava flows of the Ohanapecosh Formation are exposed in a dissected structural high in the southern Washington Cascade Range, about 22 km southwest of Packwood, Washington.
The exposed sequence of rocks in the study area are located approximately 250 m above the base of the Ohanapecosh Formation. A lower sequence of deposits, about 350 m in thickness, are dominated by primary and reworked lithic lapilli-tuff and epiclastic channelized volcanic sandstone and conglomerate. These sediments are interpreted as pyroclastic flows and stream deposits, respectively. The upper sequence, about …
An Analysis Of The Eastern Margin Of The Portland Basin Using Gravity Surveys, Steven Allen Davis
An Analysis Of The Eastern Margin Of The Portland Basin Using Gravity Surveys, Steven Allen Davis
Dissertations and Theses
The recent contributions of several investigators has indicated the Portland basin may be a pull-apart structure associated with wrench tectonism. Because of the large density contrast between sedimentary and volcanic units and because of their reasonably uniform and continuous nature, gravity survey methods can be used to identify covered structures with considerable success. The study utilized gravity modeling techniques to investigate the structure and genesis of the Portland basin's eastern margin.

They Sure Don't Build Them Like They Used To : Federal Housing Administration Insured Builders' Houses In The Pacific Northwest From 1934 To 1954, Alfred M. Staehli
Dissertations and Theses
There is a clear change in the architectural qualities of builder's houses constructed before World War II and in the postwar years. The primary evidence is in the houses themselves and their architectural qualities. This study focuses on the first 20 years of Federal Housing Administration insured mortgage builders' houses constructed in the Pacific Northwest region, although expanded with some examples from across the nation to illustrate the general application of the thesis and that this was not a regional phenomenon.
The Stochastic Behavior Of Soil Moisture And Its Role In Catchment Response Models, Nangantani Davies Godfrey Mtundu
The Stochastic Behavior Of Soil Moisture And Its Role In Catchment Response Models, Nangantani Davies Godfrey Mtundu
Dissertations and Theses
The object of current efforts at investigating catchment response is to derive a physically based stochastic model of the watershed. Recent studies have, however, indicated that a limiting factor in deriving such models is the dependence of hydrologic response on initial soil moisture. The dependence affects the distributions and moments of the hydrological processes being investigated. A stochastic model of soil moisture dynamics is developed in the form of a pair of stochastic differential equations (SDE's) of the Ito type. The sources of stochasticity are linked to the random inputs of rainfall and evapotranspiration (ET). One of the SDE's describes …
Electricity Demand Forecasting In A Changing Regional Context: The Application Of The Multiple Perspective Concept To The Prediction Process, James Christopher Sapp
Electricity Demand Forecasting In A Changing Regional Context: The Application Of The Multiple Perspective Concept To The Prediction Process, James Christopher Sapp
Dissertations and Theses
In 1982, the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), a marketer of hydroelectric power in the Pacific Northwest, found itself in a new role which required it to acquire power resources needed to meet the demands of the region's utilities. In particular, it had to deal with the Washington Public Power Supply System's nuclear plant cost escalations. In response, BPA prepared its first independent regional power forecast. The forecast development process was intricate and multidimensional and involved a variety of interested parties. Application of the Multiple Perspective Concept uncovers strengths and weaknesses in this process by illuminating its technical, organizational and personal …

The Impact Of Physical Environment On The Social Climate Of Two Jails, James G. Houston
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years there has been a strong movement to replace outdated and inadequate jails throughout the United States. According to the National Sheriff's Association 15.9% of all jails have been under a court order to improve services or conditions at one time or another. In addition, 960 jails of the 3,493 existing jails in the United States were built prior to 1950. This need for new construction or renovation has given birth to a new area of expertise among architects and contractors--jail design and construction. While design and construction techniques have improved, little is known of the effects of …

Comparisons Of Total Factor Productivity In The U.S. Electric Industry, Maya Myoga
Comparisons Of Total Factor Productivity In The U.S. Electric Industry, Maya Myoga
Dissertations and Theses
Since the onset of the recession in the 1970's, consumers have frequently expressed frustration with what appear to be ever-increasing utility bills, blaming what they perceive as unnecessarily high rates on industry inefficiency. From the industry perspective, inefficiency is not only the problem which has developed since the recession. The more critical issue is the industry's transition from a noncompetitive environment to a competitive one. In the past, the electric utility industry did not have to compete because each utility operated in an exclusive service territory, and each was regulated by the government. However, currently the industry is experiencing increased …

The influence of iron nutrition on patterns of photosynthetic behavior, nitrogen metabolism, and fixed-carbon allocation is reported for a common freshwater green alga. Cultures of Scenedesmus quadricauda were grown in Fraquil medium in which iron concentrations ranged from 1.0 μM to 0.01 μM (log 10-6 to 10-8 M, respectively). Carbon 14 and nitrogen uptake experiments were conducted at photosynthetically saturating and subsaturating photon flux densities.
The Philosophy Of William James As Related To Charles Renouvier, Henri Bergson, Maurice Blondel And Emile Boutroux, Peggy Lyne Hurtado
The Philosophy Of William James As Related To Charles Renouvier, Henri Bergson, Maurice Blondel And Emile Boutroux, Peggy Lyne Hurtado
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis argues two issues: William James' philosophy was-to a great extent derived from his interaction with the French philosophers, Charles Renouvier, Henri Bergson, Maurice Blondel and Emile Boutroux. Correlative to the fact that these five figures have an intellectual relationship with one another, I also argue that in order to understand James, he must be placed within the context of these relations. These five philosophers, as a group, can be clearly seen and understood in the context of an identifiable movement. Each one was a part of a whole reality with their own slightly different perspectives. However, the context …

The Politics Of Disestablishment : Gladstone And The Fenians, Robert Emmett Lanxon
The Politics Of Disestablishment : Gladstone And The Fenians, Robert Emmett Lanxon
Dissertations and Theses
In early 1868 William E. Gladstone presented several bills in Parliament to disestablish the Church of Ireland. Prior to 1868 Gladstone had stated his opposition to the official connection between the Church of Ireland and the State. Gladstone, however, had also claimed that he was not in favor of immediate action and instead advocated restraint in attacking the Church of Ireland. The 1860's also saw the rise of the Fenian organization. The Fenians were dedicated to the overthrow of English rule in Ireland and the establishment of an Irish republic. The role that the Fenians played in convincing Gladstone to …

Parallel Approximate String Matching Applied To Occluded Object Recognition, David Smith
Parallel Approximate String Matching Applied To Occluded Object Recognition, David Smith
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis develops an algorithm for approximate string matching and applies it to the problem of partially occluded object recognition. The algorithm measures the similarity of differing strings by scanning for matching substrings between strings. The length and number of matching substrings determines the amount of similarity. A classification algorithm is developed using the approximate string matching algorithm for the identification and classification of objects. A previously developed method of shape description is used for object representation.

A Seismic Refraction Study Of A Portion Of The Northeastern Margin Of The Tualatin Valley, Oregon, David John Nazy
Dissertations and Theses
The Tualatin Valley is a well defined elliptical basin centered at Hillsboro, with a major axis trending roughly N65°W. The valley is bordered on the northeast by the Tualatin Mountains (Portland Hills) which are a faulted, northwest-trending asymmetrical anticline. Topographic and geophysical evidence have defined the Portland Hills fault, which occurs along the northeast side of the Tualatin Mountains. The possibility that a fault or fault zone occurs along the southwest side of the Tualatin Mountains was investigated in this study.
