Genetic Patterns Of Dispersal And Colonization During Initial Invasion And Spread Of An Invasive Grass, Brachypodium Sylvaticum, Alisa Paulsen Ramakrishnan Jan 2010

Genetic Patterns Of Dispersal And Colonization During Initial Invasion And Spread Of An Invasive Grass, Brachypodium Sylvaticum, Alisa Paulsen Ramakrishnan

Dissertations and Theses

Evolution of genotypes during range expansion is driven in part by colonization dynamics. I investigated genetic patterns of colonization and dispersal during initial expansion of an invasive bunchgrass, Brachypodium sylvaticum, into Oregon. Using microsatellite markers, I sampled plants at two different scales: at regular intervals along three parallel roads spanning about 30km, and in populations identified throughout Oregon. I also collected field-generated progeny from a subset of populations and used molecular identification of outcrossing events to estimate selfing rates in both central and peripheral populations. Dispersal patterns were similar at both scales, with non-contiguous dispersal responsible for colonization of new …

City Management Theory And Practice: A Foundation For Educating The Next Generation Of Local Government Administrators, Scott Douglas Lazenby

Dissertations and Theses

Due to the retirement of the baby boom generation, many individuals, in a relatively short period of time, will need to be trained and educated to step into local government senior leadership positions. Ideally, the education and training of this new leadership cadre should be guided by a well known and proven body of theory that helps us understand the competencies the next generation of public service need to possess in order to be effective in their work. The purpose of this research is to assess whether such a body of work exists and, if so, whether it is successfully …

Phylogeographic And Phylogenetic Exploration Of Plethodon (Plethodontidae, Caudata) Salamanders In The Pacific Northwest, Tara Anne Pelletier

Dissertations and Theses

Genetic studies of amphibians often reveal substantial population structure due to either historical demographics from changing climate and geographic features over varying timeframes. Eight species of terrestrial salamanders (Family: Plethodontidae, Genus: Plethodon) reside in forests of the Pacific Northwest (PNW). Plethodon vehiculum is the most widespread and abundant terrestrial salamander in the PNW yet evolutionary studies are lacking. Using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data (D-loop and cytb) questions regarding the phylogeography of P. vehiculum and phylogenetics of western Plethodons are explored. Two major clades were defined in P. vehiculum, a southern clade in the Klamath-Siskiyou region and a …

The Reproductive And Conservation Biology Of The Spotted Towhee In Urban Forest Fragments, Sarah Bartos Smith Jun 2008

The Reproductive And Conservation Biology Of The Spotted Towhee In Urban Forest Fragments, Sarah Bartos Smith

Dissertations and Theses

I studied the demography, reproductive biology, and mating behavior of Spotted Towhees (Pipilo maculatus) in four urban parks in relation to park area, the presence of recreational trails, and the effects of habitat edges. Despite high towhee abundance in the parks, two of the four are population sinks with levels of yearly reproductive productivity that do not offset adult survival. The other two parks have sufficient reproduction to adequately result in stable or growing population sizes. Park area and the proportion of habitat edge had no influence on population growth rate, reproductive productivity, or survival. However, trail density …

The Portland Public School District (PPS) enrolled 45,446 K-12 students in Fall 2006, a decrease of 676 students (1.5 percent) from Fall 2005. This was the second consecutive year that PPS lost about 700 students, following three years of much steeper losses averaging over 1,500 annually between 2001-02 and 2004-05. Enrollment has fallen in each of the past 10 years, and the 2006-07 K-12 enrollment was 17 percent below its 1996-97 peak of 54,697. About half of the 10 year decline occurred during the 2001-02 to 2004-05 period, when the recession slowed regional employment growth but housing prices continued to …

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

This report represents results of a demographic study conducted by the Population Research Center (PRC) to address the long-range planning needs of the Gresham-Barlow School District 10J (GBSD). The long term District wide forecast was developed using patterns of migration, fertility and mortality that are most likely to occur between school years 2006 and 2015. In addition to the most likely scenario, or the medium growth forecast, two other scenarios--for higher and lower growth trends--were derived. Forecasts by grade for individual schoolsand school attendance areas were also prepared; these forecasts relied on the District wide medium growth scenario.

Strengthening Small Business Clusters Serving Minority Communities, April Bertelsen, Jacob Brostoff, Lucia Ramirez, Angela Shibley, Ernest Tipton Jun 2001

Strengthening Small Business Clusters Serving Minority Communities, April Bertelsen, Jacob Brostoff, Lucia Ramirez, Angela Shibley, Ernest Tipton

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The existence of thriving and numerous small businesses is instrumental to generating wealth within a community. They provide a diverse employment base for local residents, leading to greater economic stability. Small businesses create opportunities for keeping dollars circulating within the community, multiplying the benefits of those dollars. Creating such internal-multipliers within the economy of a community is a strategy for strengthening the community as a whole. This benefit extends to communities of color, immigrant communities, ethnic minority communities, and sexual minority communities.

Not all minority communities share in common a geographic location. They can be found residing in a relatively …

Changing Times, Changing Enrollments: How Recent Demographic Trends Are Affecting Enrollments In Portland Public Schools, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Barry Edmonston

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The purpose of this report is to provide an analysis of the demographic factors affecting recent enrollment changes in Portland Public Schools. Toward this goal, the report discusses how trends in births, migration, and international migration have affected public school enrollments in Portland. This report reaches four main conclusions: * First and foremost, public school enrollments have declined in recent years primarily because there have been sizeable decreases in the number of students entering kindergarten and the early elementary school grades. Smaller numbers of entering students are, in turn, the result of substantial reductions in the number of births--reductions that …

The Role And Performance Of Governmental And Nongovernmental Organizations In Family Planning Implementation : Jordan As A Case Study, Khalaf Al Hadded

Dissertations and Theses

The role of governmental and nongovernmental nonprofit organizations in population issues has become a familiar reality in contemporary Third World countries. A distinct irony lies in the increasing growth of the role of NGOs in implementing public programs that are conventionally assigned to government bureaucracy. In certain circumstances, these organizations become an outlet to deliver and do certain things that government agencies are not able to do. Although there is an extensive body of research and publications on nongovernmental and charitable organizations in the Third World, there are only a few cases where small NGOs are working directly with the …
