Scalar‐Wave Approach For Single‐Mode Inhomogeneous Fiber Problems, Lee W. Casperson, Cavour W. Yeh, W. P. Brown Apr 1979

Scalar‐Wave Approach For Single‐Mode Inhomogeneous Fiber Problems, Lee W. Casperson, Cavour W. Yeh, W. P. Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It has generally been accepted that accurate results may be obtained using the scalar‐wave approach to solve problems dealing with inhomogeneous multimode guided‐wave structures. The problem of the applicability of the scalar‐wave approach to obtain wave propagation characteristics in single‐mode fiber or integrated optical circuit guides with inhomogeneous index profiles is examined in this paper. It is shown that if certain limiting conditions are satisfied, the scalar‐wave approach will yield valid results for single‐mode structures. These limiting conditions are usually satisfied by many practical single‐mode inhomogeneous fibers or IOC structures.

The Cusp Catastrophe And The Laws Of Dialectics, Martin Zwick Jan 1979

The Cusp Catastrophe And The Laws Of Dialectics, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The three classical "laws" of dialectics of Hegel and Engels, ( 1) the transformation of quantity into quality, (2) the interpenetration of opposites, and (3) the negation of the negation, can be given precise meanings in terms of the Catastrophe Theory of Rene Thom and E. C. Zeeman. This suffices to counter the charge that dialectics is scholasticism or empty metaphysics, but does not support claims of universality for the dialectical principles, nor guarantee the validity of any particular application of these principles.

Seasonal Variation In Cytokinin Activity And Content In Two Species Of Dwarf Mistletoes And Their Hosts, Peter J. Paquet Jan 1979

Seasonal Variation In Cytokinin Activity And Content In Two Species Of Dwarf Mistletoes And Their Hosts, Peter J. Paquet

Dissertations and Theses

Cytokinin levels were determined by bioassay on a seasonal basis, for two species of dwarf mistletoes (Arceuthobium douglasii and Arceuthobium tsugense) and their respective hosts, Douglas-fir (pseudotsuga menziesii) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla). The highest cytokinin levels occurred in early Spring for all of the samples studied. However, with the exception of the first growth segments of Douglas-fir, the levels of cytokinins detected were significantly greater in infected tissue and aerial shoots of the mistletoe than in the healthy tissue. Further studies were carried out on Spring and Winter samples to determine the kinds of cytokinins present. High performance thin …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Visual Short Term Memory And Speechreading In Hearing Impaired Geriatrics, Catherine Hollevoet Jan 1979

A Study Of The Relationship Between Visual Short Term Memory And Speechreading In Hearing Impaired Geriatrics, Catherine Hollevoet

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between visual short term memory (as measured by the Memory for Designs Test) and speechreading ability (as measured by the Barley Speechreading Test) was investigated in a sample of twenty-seven hearing impaired geriatrics. Correlation analysis verified a statistically significant relationship between Memory for Designs Test scores and Barley Speechreading Test scores. Partial correlation revealed the relationship between speechreading scores and short term memory scores was rot influenced significantly by variance in chronological age or speech discrimination ability. Memory for Designs Test scores were shown to be accurate predictors of scores achieved on the Barley Speechreading Test.

Some Physical And Biological Factors Affecting Red-Tailed Hawk Productivity, Stewart Wayne Janes Jan 1979

Some Physical And Biological Factors Affecting Red-Tailed Hawk Productivity, Stewart Wayne Janes

Dissertations and Theses

Various physical and biological factors affecting annual productivity in a Red-tailed Hawk population in north-central Oregon were investigated. The percentage of the population successfully fledging one or more young was the most important factor in determining the number of young fledged per pair in a given year. Neither clutch size nor the number of young fledged per successful nest varied significantly. Percent pair success was correlated with several January weather variables. A cold and dry January is positively correlated with Red-tailed Hawk productivity. This is apparently related to the onset of rapid vegetative growth and this in turn is positively …

Variability In Test-Retest Of Maximum Duration Of Sustained /A/ In Children, Elena Diane Norwood Jan 1979

Variability In Test-Retest Of Maximum Duration Of Sustained /A/ In Children, Elena Diane Norwood

Dissertations and Theses

Maximum phonation time has been widely utilized as a simple clinical evaluation of the vocal function. Its importance has been emphasized by Van Riper (1954), Westlake and Rutherford (1961), Boone (1971), and other authors. A review of the literature revealed three trials of sustained phonation have been utilized by most researchers to determine maximum duration of phonation. Additionally, the review revealed a lack of test-retest reliability in maximum phonation time in children.

The present study was designed to determine the variability in test-retest of maximum duration of· sustained /a/ among prepubescent male and female children. Eighty subjects, twenty at each …

A Comparison Of The Articulatory Proficiency Between Stutterers And Nonstutterers While In A State Of Oral Sensory Deprivation, Clifford Saul Goldman

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to determine if stutterers monitor speech production differently than nonstutterers while in a state of oral sensory deprivation. The specific questions asked were:

  1. Does an imposed oral somesthetic feedback deficit hinder articulation proficiency more in a nonstuttering sample than in a stuttering sample?
  2. If the articulation proficiency is deficient in both samples, does the nature of the errors differ between the two samples?
